After narrowly escaping the inferno at the Pentacost Convent, Kimberly finds refuge with Mister Gull, a stranger who claims to possess the power of the Queens of Rustwood. Together they construct a daring plan to draw a Queen out of its nest, cage it... and kill it.
But nothing is ever so easy in the sleepy mountain town. Fitch and Detective Goodwell are being pursued by the New Queen's servants, and an emissary in a black rainslicker has been sent to destroy all who oppose her rule. Madness, murder and bad dreams have settled across Rustwood, and if Kimberly Archer doesn't move fast, she and all her companions will soon discover that death is the easy way out...
Rust is an ongoing horror series in the style of King, Lynch and Lovecraft.
Christopher "Ruz" Hayes-Kossmann was born in Hong Kong, raised in Vienna, and is now settled in Melbourne, Australia. Although he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Industrial Design, his first love has always been writing.
He's been published by Weaponizer, Labyrinth Inhabitant's Magazine and Birdville Magazine, and has won both the first Ergofiction Search Term Challenge and the first Birdville Impromptu Award.
His first fantasy trilogy, Century of Sand, is releasing Q1 2019 from Parvus Press.
Another stellar novel from Christopher Ruz. As I've said before (and will reiterate here), his writing style just speaks to me more than almost any other author I can think today.
I highly recommend both this series, and his more "traditional" Century of Sand fantasy series.
Coming back with a review this weekend; suffice to say for now that Ruz is officially one of my favorite authors. Great third act to a perfectly creepy series.
Like the two before it, Rust 3 was engaging and disturbing and weird. This time, though, we really get the world of Rustwood opened up. The end chapters hit two beats that I saw coming but felt unsure if I was right. And that made sense. And the beats were damn good and now I need Rust 4! If you're reading this review, I'm guessing you're unsure of continuing the journey. Don't turn back now. Rustwood has secrets to share with you.
In Rust Three, Christopher Ruz continues his beautiful surreal storytelling. Fans of the series won't be disappointed. I throughly enjoyed the story, and appreciated how the story made a full circle by the end of Rust Three. There were some loose ends, but, all-in-all, I felt that the ending was a good place to finish the series.
I read some reviews for Rust Three where fans felt a fourth book was necessary and that the book ended on a cliffhanger. This was not my interpretation of the ending at all. In fact, I was quite satisfied with the ending. I read on Mr. Ruz' website that he is still in the beginning phases of book four. If you, as a reader, are hesitating to read this series because it isn't finished yet, then please, don't worry. The ending in book three is perfect!
I am now a huge fan of Christopher Ruz' work, and I hope he will continue to make other series in the same vein as Rust.
Edit: There are only two books (or series of books) that have made a lasting impact on my life. I read Stephen King's It in 1986. I still hear circus music every time I see a storm drain. Now, because of Christopher Ruz' Rust, I doubt I will ever be able to open my mouth and drink in the rain drops that fall from the sky again. Why, oh why did I choose to read his series during the wettest rain season Southern California has had in years!?!
