The book I read for my anchor book is Confectionately Yours, Sugar and Spice. I finished it a while ago and have already read one other book. This book is about a girl named Hayley who lives with her mom and sister Chloe in their grandmother's apartment because her mom got divorced. But things aren't going so well in school because Hayley is stuck serving a detention with her new best friend Meghan and her ex- best friend Artie. But will Meghan and Artie ever learn to get along. This book involves a lot of twists and turns and there might even be a talent show later on in the book. When I was reading this book I was wondering if Artie and Meghan would ever become friendly, it didn't seem like it at all. I think this book is a great book because it has a lot of different things combined in to one book. For example it includes baking, sister hood, friendship, and suspense. I recommend this book, it is the third book in the series I have already read the first two books, it's a good series.
Hayley and her new best friend, Meghan, have decided to let Artie, her ex-best friend, come back into their little group, but Meg and Artie just don't mix. This book I found it more entertaining and than the first two and more challenging also. "Sugar and Spice" is for all girls to enjoy and especially for bakers.
I liked the book because I have a sweet tooth, if your a person who doesn't like baking and like keeping your story's to stay out of the baking genre, then I don't recommend this book. But if you like baking/friendship mixed in one, you'll love this crazy mixture!
I really enjoy this book a lot. It's a very fun book and I absolutely love it its one of my favorite books to read.I have the other three books right here and then beside me.SHA-BYE
Hayley is a great cupcake baker who delights in experimenting with herbs and flavors to serve at her Gram's tea shop. Her ex-bestie, Artie (Artemis) is a talented singer who lately prefers her drama club clique to her oldest friend. Meghan, a new friend is bossy but has outrageously creative ideas and is a ton of fun. Both friends have flaws, but nothing that can't be cured by a killer cupcake or macaron. Stressors include Hayley's recently divorced parents, friends Marco and Kyle, and who's sitting with whom in the school cafeteria. Meghan decides to organize a student-led talent show and the ensuing chaos gets both Artie and Hayley as well as herself in a week of detention. All's well that ends well with a few sweet surprises along the way. The author writes with an excellent middle-grade voice for her characters, who struggle with real-life problems we care about. But the real stars of this show are the recipes! I can't wait to try Pistachio Rosewater Cupcakes and Lemon-Ginger Cupcakes with Basil Cream Cheese Frosting. (Although this book is #3 in a series, it can certainly stand alone.)
This book was more on par with the first one and I was disappointed. The book was still fun, but I was hoping to enjoy it as much as I did the second of the series. I had two main problems with the book, there were too many recaps and troubling representation. I understand that writers want their books to be able to stand on their own, but this is the third book and we are being told the same basic facts about the characters and their interactions for the third time. I think that there are more clever ways to remind us what happened or inform new readers by showing and not telling. My other main problem was the representation of Omar and Jamil. It is insinuated that these two characters are minorities and possibly African American and they are the only representations of racial minorities outside of the older flower shop owners and the younger adopted friend of the younger sister. They are constantly rapping and being disruptive, other characters hit them and they do not get a character arc or any other time within the book whatsoever. Otherwise, the book had some sweet moments that I enjoyed but it was more of the same overall.
This book was really interesting! It takes place in present day at Haley's school, and at her grandma's cafe. Haley has to face the twists and turns of friendship. After getting detention with Meagan and her ex friend Artie she is forced to talk to Artie more. As they talk more they learn to get along more. With help from all of them they manage to put a talent show together. Haley realises that she and Artie may never be closer, but she can work through flaws. This book is a five star book and you should read it!
If you come across this book by Lisa Papademetriou , or any of her books, the look of the cover is so comforting and sweet. Yes, this book is for young readers, however the story is so pleasing and has a very very important message to take home. Haley, the main character in this amazing story has played an absolute perfect friend, a sister, and a daughter. Being raised by a divorced mother can be challenging and questionable for siblings. Haley has been a warrior at handling her home as well as the obstacles which she faces at school. And if you have a sweet tooth, you are bound to be glued to the plethora of yummiest cup cake recipes throughout the book. The book revolves round this most beautifully described teashop which belongs to Haley’s grandmother. Haley , her sister Chloe, and her mother have been living with their grandmom ever since Haley’s parents got divorced. Her little sister Chloe has her own problems after her parent’s divorce, and she is sad that her best friend Rupert is also moving away and changing schools. Chloe keeps her worries to herself. Coming to the challenges Haley faces at school is altogether a different episode. Her best friend Artie, who is no more her bestie has left Haley disturbed and turbulent . However in the end everything falls in place and ends well. A very touching and comforting story for every youth to read and also grasp important life lessons from in-between the lines. Happy Reading!!!
Haley, her little sister Chole & her mother have finally settled into a nice home near Gran´s tea shop. But as for school things arent so great. Hayleys used to be bestie, Artie is always in detention for some reason leaving her hanging. But on the bright side Hayley has a new friend named Meghan. But for some reason Meghan & Artie dont get along very well. Hayley has a bunch on her plate but she can only eat so much! This is just another accidents waiting to happen.
I love this series. It is well written and has a great story to it and ending. I recommend it to every reader who likes realistic fiction stories, easy and fun chapter books, a bit of drama, and baking!
Compared to the rest of the series, this is the most lackluster. Its themes feel way more childish than the ones before it so it didn't appeal much to me. It does resolve some things in the second book so it's still worth reading.
The simple, clear, engaging narrative of middle grade fic reminds me why I love books like this. I remembered no details from the first two, but didn't need to in order to enjoy reading and steak a cupcake recipe.
I read Confectionery Yours: Sugar and Spice by Lisa Papademetriou Hayley gets detention along with her new best friend, Meghan, and her former best friend, Artie, for using a fog machine without asking. They get caught and their punishment is to clean out the drama closet. While in detention, Meghan comes up with the idea to have a school talent show. Ms. Lang, the drama teacher, says no until she hears it could be used as a fundraiser. She says yes and the girls start planning. After a few weeks the day comes and the talent show begins. Artie starts her singing act and some boys run up and ruin the show! Hayley has to calm her down and eventually she gets back up on stage and has an amazing performance. The two girls don't fight as much anymore after this. The main theme of this story is accepting people for who they are and being nice to everyone. I would recommend this book to any girl who likes a book with a lot of drama in it. Anyone ages 9-13 would most likely enjoy it.
Hayley and her little sister Chloe, and their mom just finally settled into their new home above their grandmas tea and know Hayley makes her cupcakes there and sells them. Things at their school aren't going very well. Hayley's former best friend Artie and Hayley's new best friend Megan. They are in detention cause they were not paying attention. Artie is very jealous cause Hayley and Megan are living Artie out and so Artie gets very mad at her. Hayley gets mad at Artie as well cause Hayley thinks Artie is being rude to Megan. One day in drama Megan and Hayley saw how every one was like dead they where not happy to be at school so they thought of something to make the school be happy to come to the school and they thought what about a talent show and they where like perfect. So they planed all this stuff for the talent show and a lot of people signed up to show everyone their talent. So the day of the talent show Artie was still mad at Hayley but she signed up to sing and she is a very good singer. She was first to show of her talent and as soon as she was done she walked right of us stage and straight for the door to go outside. Hayley saw her go out side and she was like hmm what is she doing so she told Megan I will be right back. She went outside and it was freezing cold out side and she found Artie rolled up in a ball crying. Hayley ran up to her and said whats wrong and Artie goes " I'm sorry for being such a jerk to you and Megan and being made at you because I was jealous." Hayley say " its okay I'm sorry to for being mad at you because I though you where being mean to Megan." They say there sorry and they both walk inside together and go back stage and Megan looks surprised and Megan asks Hayley if they where friend and they both say yes. At the end of the book they both become the best of friends.
The main Charters are Artie and Hayley. Why? They where best friend and then they became enemies and back to best friends. Artie and Hayley where best friends nothing could separate them until Hayley found a new best friend Megan. Artie and Hayley where tight and then they became weak and hated each other witch drove them apart. Few weeks went by and they where still mad at each other. Until the day of the talent show. Artie went up and sang a song and it was kinda a sad song so she felt bad of how rude she has been to Hayley and so after she was done singing she went straight out side. Hayley was worried. Artie and Hayley are getting closer together. Hayley found Artie outside and Hayley asked her what was wrong and she said oh I'm sorry and Hayley said her sorry and they hugged and they said to each other can we be friend again and they both said yes. Hayley and Artie and tight again. When they go back inside Megan is like oh u guys are friends again and Megan is like can I be your guys friend too and they say yes so those three become the best of friends and are super tight again.
I loved this book because it was my type of book and because it was very interesting. Why? Because Artie and Hayley get in a fight. It was also interesting because how easily Megan took away Hayley form Artie. This book is also my type cause it taught me how to be a better friend and not to get mad and fight over a stupid thing like someone stilling your best friend when u can just be friends with both of them. If you ever get in a fight with your best friend find away to apologize and become friends again like Artie and Hayley did.

Lisa Papademetriou delivers again with another fun book about Hayley and her 7th grade existence.
Diversity continues to be a theme. This time, we have a foster family and a charity fundraiser. However, as much as this series makes an effort to open readers' eyes to various differences of people within a community, I can't get past the inaccurate portrayal of anaphylaxis. In this book, Hayley's allergic reaction in the last book was recapped, and still there was no mention of an ER visit, which is standard procedure in case of anaphylaxis. A "shot" is mentioned, but there's no indication that Hayley was prescribed an EpiPen, which is also standard procedure if someone is diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy. It just seemed like the author was trying to spread some allergy awareness, but spreading incomplete or misleading information really doesn't help. I think I would have given this book 5 stars if the depiction of anaphylaxis, and its treatment and aftermath, had been fleshed out more.
Anyway, other than that one shortcoming, I really enjoyed this book. Annie doesn't make an appearance, and I found myself feeling glad about that.
Hayley continues to "keep it real". Having given up on her crush, she finds herself confused by her own emotions in regards to Marco and Kyle. Her relationships with Artie and Meghan continue to develop, and she realizes that while she's been going through a lot of big deals herself, so have the people around her - like Artie and Chloe. As Hayley points out on page 118 of my edition, "What may be a big deal to one person isn't a big deal to another. Or maybe some people are good at handling one kind of big deal, and bad at handling others."
