"Little Brother and Little Sister" is a magical story about two innocent children who flee the wicked stepmother they have. They seek shelter in the woods but we all know that the forests often hide dangers. Will the little boy and girl survive by taking care of each other or the evil witch will find them? Are the curses going to catch up with them or the good will win over the bad?
German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).
Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This story was AWESOME!! and I think would be great as a modern retelling.
Of course a step-mom is involved who hates the kids and the kids run away. But the twist is that the step-mom is a witch and bewitches the water supply which turns the brother into a fawn.
Sister takes care of the fawn and herself and soon a hunting party comes through their woods. Because the fawn is really a boy (and can still talk!!) he totes wants to join the hunting party (as a fawn) just to screw with everyone.
The King learns about the Sister and the talking fawn and when he goes to them he falls in love with the Sister and marries her. The new Queen requests that her fawn stays with them forever and the King agrees.
Soon, they have a son and the witch step-mom learns that the sister and fawn are still alive and now her daughter is jealous cuz hey... she married a king!
They go to the kingdom and kill the Sister and the other daughter takes the form of the Queen.
For a couple nights the ghost Queen comes around and feeds her baby ghost boob milk and checks on her fawn. The King finds out and BOOM... spell is broken when he touches her. The daughter gets ripped apart by beasts and the witch mom gets burned.

I think I've read this one before. A brother and sister run away to escape the cruel treatment of their stepmother, who is also a witch (these stories are NOT kind to stepmothers!). The stepmother enchants a stream and the brother turns into a roebuck. The sister and her transformed brother find an abandoned cottage and make their new home there. But both their lives change when a king and his hunting party come to the area. An enjoyable, traditional fairy tale.
11. Little Brother and Little Sister A little brother and his little sister decide to run away from the stepmother that they are stuck with after she has treated and beaten them one too many times. They wander the forest for a long time trying to find a safe place to live. They become thirsty and each time they stop the sister hears a chant that says if water is drank from the streams they would turn into an animal. With the fear that the brother would drink and then once an animal kill his sister they moved on. On the last stream the voice says that if they drink the water they will turn into a deer. The brother is too thirsty to say no and as soon as he finished he turns into a deer. As sad as they are that he is now a deer they are still happier than they have ever been. When the king and his hunting party pass near by the brother longs to join and each time comes nearly being caught. The king finds the sister and wants to marry her but only if she can bring her fawn along with her. Later the witch finds out that these children did not die in the forest like she wants but were living happily with the king. She and her daughter devise a plan to rid the king of his queen and her fawn and throw her to the stream. As the nights followed a spirit came that asked about her baby and her dear fawn. On the last night the king realized that it was his dear wife and brought her back to him and cast out the witch and her daughter. As soon as they perished the spell was broken and the brother turned back into a human.
Personal Note Love this story, and I especially love the ending that the witch and her daughter receive their punishment, "the daughter was taken into the forest where she was torn to pieces by wild beasts, but the witch was cast into the fire and miserably burnt." Hahah! "miserably burnt" like there is a good version!
