German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Was the band White Snake named after this?

A servant delivers din din to the King a secret dish. Always a secret dish. And one day when the King is done with his secret dish the servant takes it to his room and sees that he was eating white snake.

oooowww boy! He's gotta try him a bite of that!

After taking a nom he gets the power to talk to animals!! No wait... He can understand animals!! He never really talked to them.

So, the Queen's ring gets lost and of course the servant is accused but he finds out this duck ate it and so he tells the cook to cook the duck. And whamo!! The ring!!

The servant is rewarded with whatever he wants and he wants a horse and some cash so he can go around the land for a while.

He helps 3 fish who are in trouble and because he's kind (even though he could have waited for the duck to poop out the ring) he puts the fish back into the water.

And then he finds some ants and he stops stepping on them with his big horse.

And then he finds 3 baby ravens who can't fly and will starve and because he's nice he slaughters his horse for them.

Man... I think this dude really just likes fish ;)

So, then he hears that this other king is going to wed his daughter off to the dude that can perform a task for him. It's really like "Survivor" cuz if you don't win you get killed.

The dude wins the task cuz the fish help him out.

Then the princess is like "Ewww" when she finds out his of common birth and gives him a task of his own and that's when the ants help.

And then the baby ravens help in this third task.

Seriously, this dude couldn't not take a hint!! Cuz this chick totally wasn't into him until his raven buds retrieved a golden apple from the tree of life and they both ate from it. But hey... It worked out in the end!

This is definitely one of my favourite stories from the Brothers Grimm. A young man with a kind heart, getting what he deserves in the best way possible. With a few faerie tale tropes (that the Brothers Grimm may have created, I'm not sure), this is actually a wonderful read, and I highly recommend this story.

This is a strange story about a servant who eats a taste of white snake that was prepared for his king. This allows the man to understand and communicate with animals. Through many trials, he uses this talent to be kind and earn treasures.

17. The White Snake
A trusty servant can not figure out how his king can get information about his kingdom so fast. All he knows is that the king has a special covered meal that he ate only when alone. No one knew what was under that cover except for the king. One day while clearing the dished couldn't take it anymore and looked under the cloth. He found there a white snake, once he discovered this he didn't want to deny trying to animal and took a bite. As soon as it touched his tongue he could hear whispering and discovered that he could hear animals speaking! This was how the king was getting his news! Soon after the queen lost her favorite ring and when searching couldn't not produce it, the king told the servant that if it was not found soon he would be to blame. The servant overheard some ducks talking and found that one had eaten the ring! He grabbed her gave her to cook to have made and they soon found the ring! To wrong his mistake the king granted the young man provisions to set out on his own, including money and a horse. He came across some fish that were stranded and placed them back in the water. They thanked him and he was on his way. He heard yelling and found an ant king yelling at passersby for trampling his people. The servant made the horse ride away from the ants and the king thanked him for his kindness. He came upon some abandoned raven's, killed his horse so they could eat and grow strong, they too thanked him and he set down his way. The young man finds himself in front of another king who has a daughter available for marriage. To win her hand one must complete a difficult task. As it turns out these tasks are only made possible with help from those that he assisted while on his travels. The fish, ants and birds win him the daughter.

Personal Note
He kills the duck and the horse?! Didn't the horse protest it's death before he killed it to use for meat?!

This is an odd little story.

The supposed moral--that one ought reciprocate kindness--is surely the only thing to take away from it, but it is rather an incomplete illustration. The protagonist, for example, is not a good person; he sacrifices his horse to feed the ravens, he has the goose slaughtered to save his own skin for the ring. What he does do in kindness--feeding the ravens, saving the fish, not killing the ants--net him a Queen and riches, but he is no paragon of virtue, and, if these beings whom he harmed were to retaliate, he would surely be dead.

This wouldn't be a problem but for one issue: it is pretty clear that a moral person, rather than one immoral, should gain access to the riches and power our protagonist is given, not just because those around him bend the knee to his special attention, because of his haphazard goodness. In that sense, then, we see that this story illustrates a principle that is not moral, but descriptive, perhaps, of something we really see in life.

In this tale, there is an in-universe reason why the animals can talk. A King eats a white snake to develop a power to have the power of knowledge, but then a courier eats the white snake to hear all animals speak.

This is one of those tales where what goes around comes around. Our hero helps animals who then help him back in his adventures. It's one of those tales where a commoner has to succeed in tasks to marry a princess. The heroes must really like the challenge.

The tree of life and golden apples make an appearance which is fun from a mythological perspective. Also, the hero doesn’t tell anybody about his powers, similar to the king. It's wise to keep power for your own gain I guess. It arguably made the servant more empathetic to life.

Jacob Grimm, alongside his brother Wilhelm, is renowned for compiling "Grimm's Fairy Tales," a collection of German folktales. This book is a captivating journey into the heart of folklore, presenting a mixture of enchanting and sometimes dark stories that have fascinated readers for generations. The original tale is much better but also darker then the version kids see.

It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.

The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.

The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which but it also felt like there was something missing.

What amazing luck and good fortune comes from helping others (even animals that only you understand). But what about the horse that was slaughtered to feed the raven chicks who retrieve the final task, the golden apple from the tree of life? didn't the horse say, hey, we could ride for some bird seed or something? I don't know what the white snake was which the king eats and the trusted servant tastes once was metaphorically but it seems to be the power to be considerate to the least among us. (maybe)

Eating the snake symbolizes the incorporation of the shadow and the unconscious resulting in wisdom and transformation. The snake is mysterious and hidden. It takes effort and courage for the servant uncover the snake and ingest it. Once he does, it is as if the voices of nature speak to him. He is saved from death and disgrace, escapes servitude and is made whole to journey through life and to find and receive love.

I think I've read a variation of this tale before. A faithful servant becomes curious about a special dish the king has every day, tries a bit of it, and can suddenly understand the speech of animals. Far from being punished for sampling the royal meal, a white snake, this winds up not only saving his life but earns him a royal bride. An enjoyable story, all in all.

I have the whole collection of Grimm Fairy Tales. I never heard this one. I thought it ok that it could be better but what do you expect from the Brothers Grimm. Most are pretty grim and bloody but I love those ones. Just not this tale.

Good deeds always pay off, except killing a duck for a golden ring to save one's own skin. That wasn't exactly nice.

Overall, this was a pretty good story but I felt a bit cheated by the title since the white snake appeared only once and then the story began focusing on the servant.

Another pretty tale: eventually, all the good you do, will be back to you. :)
However, since English is not my mother tongue, this tale in specific was a bit complex for me grammatically speaking, so I got a bit lost at the beginning, haha.
