Mindbenders 2: The Fiery Sky

Rate this book
The most dangerous enemy is the one inside your own mind.

Max Renn, the legendary Soviet mind control agent, faces a terrifying new threat to the global balance of power--and an opponent who ruthlessly uses Renn's own deepest secrets to betray him.

Renn and his Mindbenders team race from a murder-without-clues in Belgium to a floating village in the South China Sea, from an amphitheater in Africa to the Australian Outback.

This fast-paced thriller takes place in a world where brutal coercion is an everyday weapon and victory hides even in the doubts of those who seem to know too much.

Ted Krever watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, went to Woodstock (the good one), and graduated Sarah Lawrence College with a useless degree in creative writing.

He spent several decades creating programs for ABC News, CBS, CNN, A&E, Court TV, MTV News, Discovery People and CBS/48 Hours, and as VP/Production of a short-lived dotcom.

He has driven a 16-wheeler across the Rockies, shot overnight news in NY City, managed a revival-house movie theater and married twice, in a triumph of optimism.

He was once accused of attempting to blow up Ethel Kennedy with a Super-8 projector.

MINDBENDERS 2: THE FIERY SKY: A MAX RENN THRILLER is (duh!) the sequel to 2011's MINDBENDERS. I was beginning to think that it was never going to come out, but it did, and it was worth the wait. The eponymous Max Renn is the end result of a long-term Soviet espionage program designed to selectively breed people with extraordinary "psychotronic" (Renn doesn't like the word "psychic") abilities including telepathy, psychokinesis, mind control, remote viewing and more. Picking up right where MINDBENDERS left off, Max, who long ago left the crumbling remnants of the Soviet Union, has assembled a very small team of consisting of Kate Crowell, a similarly (but less) gifted product of the US's own breeding program for paranormal abilities and Greg Hirsch, who starts out in the first novel as a near catatonic PTSD casualty of the Battle of Fallujah who is living with his uncle, a friend of Max's as the spit hits the fan.

There is a cast of thousands (or at a least dozen) and the novel skips around, both in terms of characters and locales, quite a bit so one has to be paying attention. But basically it is a continuation of the story started in Part 1, in which Max and colleagues are trying to stay one step ahead of L-Corp, a group of paranormal mercenaries that will bend your mind (and your vote and even your purchasing preferences) at the behest of the highest bidder. A lot of the stuff that wasn't completely clear in Part 1 is now, in part because Greg, who is the principal narrator, has recovered from his PTSD and then some and so the narrative is clearer.

MINDBENDERS 2: THE FIERY SKY is clearly not the end of Max and friends. It has the feeing of the middle of a trilogy, and there is certainly enough material for one or more entries without getting stale. Mr. Kreever is an excellent writer (even F. Paul Wilson says so and I rarely see him hyping anyone's writing but his own) and his imagination is great. I like all the characters, and the world that Kreever has created. I hope I don't have to wait another 4.5 years for the next entry to see who comes out on top.

Recommended.

Fast paced, yes, but well paced also and very skillfully written. This book picks up where the first one left off and doesn't let go until... well you may find yourself staying up all night to finish this. It's very good. Hollywood could make some magic with these books! He writes like a fiend and like somebody you'd like to have drinks with after the book signing.
