Oliver and Jumpy, Volume 18

Rate this book
Oliver is an elegant tuxedo cat, who is full of himself. As a matter of fact he “I love myself!”, quite often. Naughty, isn’t he? But his best friend Jumpy, a kangaroo lady, is aware that he has a soft heart and will always want to help others. The great thing is Jumpy’s pouch, which Oliver loves to ride in! He calls her his kangaroo taxi! These little bedtime stories with their lovely illustrations are great for small kids. A parent can read the text and tell the child in his own words. These animal stories have sufficient text to keep early readers happy and provide some educational value. Love you all! Meow! Mice Chase - Oliver teaches the children of his friend Mousy how to escape a cat. He doesn't eat mice because of his allergy.Smoke over the Sea - Oliver wants to rescue people in trouble but gets himself into trouble.Lazy Squirrel - Oliver helps Squirly to find her stolen nuts and teaches another lazy squirrel a lesson.

Now also a Romantasy author! Born in Vienna, Austria, I am now living in the paradise of Perth, Australia with my wife, two married children and three grandchildren. I worked many years in the printing industry and later for the United Nations in Vienna. My wife had been a pen-friend, whom I visited in Hong Kong and finally got married to. After an eventful life, finally retired, I began to write children's stories, had them illustrated through Odesk, narrated them myself for YouTube and finally published the ebooks on most platforms. I will publish 20 books with three stories each in English, before translating into several other languages. My dream is to see "Oliver and Jumpy" animated as a TV series.

We find the friends Oliver, Jumpy and Joey in three more adventures. By now I'm just rating the books against previous ones so I enjoyed some earlier books more, but this one is still fun and colourful.
There is a little lesson at the heart of each tale like where the water in your cup comes from, how some people would like to go to school to learn English, or how heading off without letting anyone know where you are going can land you in big trouble.
The author keeps coming up with ideas and these are good teaching tales as well as early reading. Enjoy!

Oliver and Jumpy Stories 52-54
By Werner Stejskal
Illustrations by Maycee Ann Reyes

Story 52 Oliver the Babysitter

Oliver doesn't get much tree mail but one day his sister sends a letter asking him to babysit her three children while she's in the hospital having another one. Oliver rushes off to help his nephew and two nieces who are home for their school holidays--which worries Oliver just a little bit. OH BOY!! By the end of the day Oliver is one tired cat, and not feeling very elegant. I wonder if he thought it was like having three of himself around all day? Luckily, his sister Fanny had her new baby quickly, but what do you kids think Oliver learned while watching three precocious young cats?

Story 53 Smoke over the Sea

Like most trees, Oliver's treehouse loses its leaves in winter. This gives him a great view of the sea. One day he spots a strange pillar of smoke way out in the water. Oliver calls Jumpy, telling her there's an emergency. Remember, kids, Oliver doesn't like water much so he rides in Jumpy's pouch way out past the shoreline. A huge blue whale asks if they need help. They both get a ride in the huge jaws of the whale all the way to an island. How scary is that? The smoke signal is on top of a high mountain. Then they get captured by natives who carry them off. Oh no, not for dinner? You'll have to read the rest of this story yourself--it's just too scary!!

Story 54 Rain Drop

This delightful story is about water drops. They gather together as they fall from a dark cloud, making so much noise that they wake up the weather god who sends a lightening bolt at them. Yikes! One of them, named Droppy,(oddly enough), gets parted from her friends and lands on the sand. A tree calls out that it's thirsty but Droppy has a special place to go; joining some water which flows into a pipe and out a water tap . . . into guess who's drinking cup? And that's just the beginning of this special story.

Author Werner Skejskal never tires of coming up with new adventures and learning experiences for Oliver and his friends. The illustrations by Maycee Ann Reyes are simply captivating, full of the bright colors that children love. This series of books teaches children not to be afraid to learn new things, to be careful when danger looms, and to always treat others as they would like to be treated. Lessons that the adults reading to them can learn as well--a brilliant, skillful method of educating and entertaining at the same time.

"Great Bedtime Stories Kids Love"

Here are three new stories about Oliver, the handsome, debonair cat, and Jumpy the kangaroo, his BFF (best friend forever). These are great bedtime stories you and your kids will truly enjoy. Story 52, "Oliver The Babysitter" is where Oliver has to care for his three nieces and nephews. Well, I think you all know how they will scam Uncle Oliver! Story 53, "Smoke Over The Sea" is about a great plume of smoke seen by Oliver in the middle of winter. Was a ship on fire? How will Oliver get to the emergency across the sea? Excitement galore! Story 54, Rain Drop" is about a water drop called Droppy and she loves the sky, but what happens when she falls from the sky to the ground? She has a mission of which you'll totally agree.. As a big fan of Oliver and Jumpy, I find these stories captivating and adventuresome. Kids love them as much as I do.

Werner Stejskal is back with another set of stories detailing the adventures of Oliver, the self-proclaimed world's most elegant cat (he wears a white top hat and a bowtie) and his pal Jumpy the kangaroo (Stejskal lives in Australia). For those unfamiliar with these two, the Oliver and Jumpy series features some of the best illustrations that you will see on Amazon or, indeed, many other places. The stories don't always quite measure up to the pictures, but the books, including this one, are worth it for the visuals alone.

Like most of the books in the series, Oliver and Jumpy 52-54 comprises three stories. Author Stejskal supplies the text and, in the current book, his best illustrator, Maycee Ann Reyes, provides the pictures. The stories are usually fairly basic, with each one primarily consisting of a series of illustrated panels that take up about 80% of each screen with a couple of lines of text beneath. The panels are displayed in landscape format, and readers swipe the screen to advance from one panel to the next. A few pages are all text, usually followed by a panel that’s all illustrated. Including the title page, the first story, “Oliver the Babysitter” is 10 panels long, while the other two, “Smoke over the Sea” and “Rain Drop,” are each 14 panels long.

The plots of these stories are usually basic, but, in this book, Stejskal develops more detailed story lines in the last two stories. “Babysitter” is pretty straightforward, with Oliver’s sister going to the hospital to have a baby (I guess cats in Oliver’s land visit maternity wards far more often that they do here in the U.S.A.), and Oliver has to babysit his rambunctious nieces and nephews for a few days. Needless to say, that proves a messy challenge. In “Smoke,” Oliver spies smoke signals from a distant island and he and Jumpy go there to explore. Once there, they are captured by natives who want Oliver to teach the chief’s son how to read. Later, Oliver has to do battle with some fire devils from the volcano that caused the smoke. Finally, “Rain Drop” is the story of a raindrop from the clouds to Oliver’s tap and then ends with a story told by a neighboring bear about a painful encounter with some honeybees.

The illustrations in this book are once again up to Stejskal’s high standards. All of the characters are carefully drawn in bright color schemes reminiscent of the old Tom and Jerry cartoons, and the facial expressions are remarkably detailed and often quite amusing. That’s especially the case in “Babysitter,” in which Oliver has to change a diaper and make a breakfast that winds up more on him than on the breakfast plates. In the other stories, the fire devils (with big red tongues sticking out) and the raindrops are also quite carefully and cleverly rendered.

The storylines in the last two stories are considerably more detailed (in fact seeming more like two stories in one for each of them), but they might be a bit much for younger readers. In addition, the book could use some better copy editing in a couple of places, and Stejskal chooses a cursive font in the last story, which might make it tougher on beginning readers to understand. I realize that I’m not the target audience here, but I think that some of his other books have better storylines that will be more entertaining for younger readers.

Overall, although the stories here could be improved somewhat, the illustrations are among the best I’ve seen in the Stejskal books I’ve read. He does repackage some of the illustrations, so he sometimes crops a portion of a larger picture and uses that part as another illustration on a separate page. I would rate this book at 3.5 stars, but, since Amazon doesn’t allow those sorts of ratings, I’m rounding it up to 4 based on the quality of the illustrations. People have come to expect this sort of quality in Stejskal’s books, and the illustrations here are very good indeed. Oliver and Jumpy are a sight for both young and old eyes.

As always, the Oliver and Jumpy books are a wonderful choice for books for children of all ages and the beautifully colored illustrations pair perfectly with the text. Younger children will love to have these read to them while looking at the illustrations and older kids will enjoy reading them on their own - the language is simplistic enough to appeal to a wide variety of ages.

The stories always focus on helping others and working together. They are wonderful teaching tools for children in a fun and colorful way.

The only thing that I have to mention as a negative is the change of font on the third story - it made the words harder to read, and younger kids who are just learning to read might have trouble with the font. The font in the first two stories is much clearer.

Oliver and Jumpy are having new adventures. The stories in this book are; 52- Oliver the Babysitter, 53- Smoke Over the Sea and 54- Raindrop. Oliver and Jumpy have so much fun together and they meet the most interesting animals.
Oliver the Babysitter- Oliver agrees to keep his nephew and nieces for the school holidays. Their family is expecting a new baby boy. Fun and imagination are put to good use.
Smoke Over the Sea- When you see smoke, it could mean trouble. Oliver and Jumpy go to check it out and their whale friends help too. Oliver and Jumpy are captured by natives so they can teach a native boy English.
Raindrop- Oliver watches as the rain keeps falling. In time, friends ask to stay with him high in his tree house. Everyone enjoys being together and hope the rain will stop soon.

This series is a must for any children's library. They are fun, engaging and each tale is the perfect length. Characters children will love and a story very well written is in every book. This series allows children to use their imagination. I love that each story has a lesson in it. Your child will be asking for these to be read over and over again.

I found no issues.

Be a hero! Lend a hand (or paw) to someone in need.

You know what I like about Oliver? He's a stand-up guy. He may be "full of himself" (as his creator claims) and take pride in his elegance and his spotless white top hat, but when the chips are down, you can yell for help and he's on it.

Take the story "Oliver the Babysitter." Now Oliver is a tomcat, for pete's sake. A bachelor. What does he need with kids? But when his sister is getting ready to deliver #4, he cheerfully hops on a pterodactyl (check out the luggage compartment!) and heads to her house to watch the older kids. They immediately sense his inexperience and take full advantage of it, but Uncle Oliver carries on gamely. Through dirty diapers and cooking disasters and being shown up by his beautiful, super-competent niece Sorella, he gallantly holds down the fort until Fanny (and a new nephew) arrive home and he can thankfully escape back to his quiet bachelor tree-house.

In "Smoke on the Sea" he notices smoke coming from a distant island and again rushes to the rescue. Accompanied by his friend Jumpy and her son Joey, he takes a Jonah-like ride to a gorgeous tropical isle, only to be taken captive by natives. Worst of all, one of them steals his hat! They're rescued by Jumpy's pilot husband (who must wish his wife would stay away from Oliver!) and return home with a visitor who needs a favor. Naturally, Oliver is up for the job.

The third story "Rain Drop" is unusual for this series. It's a lyrical look at a drop of water and how she fits into the natural world. She ends up in Oliver's deep well. During dry times, he shares water with everyone and there's no place more entertaining than a watering hole, right?

In his quirky way, Oliver is a role model. His adventures show how each of us can be a hero every day to family, friends, and strangers. All we have to do is be willing to help people when they need us. It's a life-changing idea and one well worth emphasizing.

This book is part of a series called Oliver and Jumpy. This particular volume has stories 52 - Oliver the Babysitter, 53 - Smoke over the Sea, and 54 - Raindrop. It is an excellent gift for parents with children under 8 as suggested by the author. The book is beautifully illustrated by Maycee Ann Reyes and that is a very important plus, as its main audience will rely on the images to follow the stories, as many will not have reached the age to start reading by themselves. In "Oliver the Babysitter", Oliver receives a letter from his sister, asking for help with her three children while she is in the hospital to have another baby. After a long travel, he start his experience taking care of his nephew and two nieces and what an adventure this is! In the "Smoke over the Sea", Oliver notices a pillar of smoke out in the sea and thinks someone is in trouble. With the help of Jumpy, Joey and Bluey the whale, they travel to the island where the smoke is coming from. Over there they are captured by a tribe of natives and their adventure began. Finally in "Raindrop", we follow the saga of a raindrop that ends up in Oliver's cup and we learnt how Oliver helped his friends with his water well, a place where everybody group together to hear nice tales! All stories are very sweet and even touching and the characters are always showing good behavior. No violence, nothing too scary or too exciting, it will keep your toddler entertained (but not over excited) during that critical bedtime period. They will love the stories and soon enough Oliver and Jumpy will be in their hearts forever.
In my kindle fire the story was presented in landscape orientation. No option to have it in portrait orientation, but this is far away from being a problem. I just thought it was worth mentioning. I highly recommend this book to the permanent library of any parent that is willing to entertain their kids during bedtime.

Werner Stejskal continues his delightful Oliver and Jumpy series with stories 52-54 in book 18.

If you are new to the Oliver and Jumpy series, you should know that Oliver is an elegant tomcat. He is rather vain, but he is really kindhearted. Oliver has many adventures with his friends, Jumpy and her son, Joey.

In story 52, “Oliver the Babysitter", Oliver’s sister is having a new baby and asks him to babysit her other three children. Oliver does a conscientious job of babysitting, but he is definitely worn out at the end. He is ready to hand the reins to his sister and her husband.

Story 53, “Smoke Over the Sea”, has Oliver, Jumpy and Joey investigating some smoke they see far out in the ocean. Bluey, their whale friend, gives them a ride in his mouth and deposits them on an island. Oh, no! They are captured by natives! Will they be eaten? No, the chief wants them to teach his son English. The friends do have some scary fire devils to face, but they arrive home safely in the end.

“Rain Drop”, story 54, is a tale of raindrops and, especially, Droppy, the personified rain drop. Children learn that water is very important, a good deal better than sugary drinks.

These wonderful stories are made for bedtime. Parents can read to their small children and explain what is happening in their own words. Early readers can attempt to read the stories with some help from their parents.

The illustrations are beautifully done, expressive and full of humor. Maycee Ann Reyes does a marvelous job in catching the spirit of the stories. She is by far my favorite illustrator of Werner’s Oliver and Jumpy series.

These stories are the latest three in the Oliver and Jumpy series. They include:

1. Oliver the Babysitter
2. Smoke Over the Sea
3. Raindrop

As before, readers follow the adventures of Oliver the dapper black and white cat, and his best friend Jumpy the Kangaroo. In Oliver the Babysitter, Oliver learns he’s about to become an uncle again. His sister is expecting her fourth baby and needs Oliver to babysit her three current little ones while mama is in the hospital. Oliver soon finds that minding children is a difficult job. Young readers will be amused by Oliver’s adventures and mishaps. There’s a lovely ending and some valuable lessons for children.

In Smoke Over the Sea, Oliver finds that someone is sending SOS smoke signals. As usual, Oliver and his friends are quickly willing to help out. When things don’t exactly turn out as expected, Oliver uses his smarts and ingenuity to save the day.

In Raindrop, readers follow an imaginative story about Droppy the raindrop and her friends. There’s some wonderful kid-friendly science lessons at play here!

As always, I enjoyed these three new Oliver and Jumpy stories. Werner Stejskal continues to write wonderfully engaging, clever and educational books for children. I’m always so impressed by the detailed and gorgeous illustrations too. I highly recommend the Oliver and Jumpy series of books for children, parents, grandparents and caregivers.

Oliver, the elegant tom cat who ‘loves himself,’ is back with his friend Jumpy the kangaroo in three interesting little adventures for little readers—or little ones who like to be read to. In Oliver and Jumpy: 52-54 by Werner Stejskal, Oliver has to babysit for his sister while she goes to the hospital to have another kitten—a job he finds he’s hardly prepared for. Then, when Oliver spots a strange plume of smoke out at sea, he and his friends go to explore, and he finds himself taken captive to teach the chief’s son, of all things, English. In the final story, which is a bit confusing to me, we follow a raindrop from its origin in the sky to Oliver’s drinking glass, where it asks to be swallowed. While the first two stories teach useful lessons, I had a bit of a start at the third one; not sure how I’ll explain that one to my grandchildren. The illustrations, as usual, are superb, and the morals of the first two stories are useful lessons for any age. Maybe the moral of the third story is that everything has a purpose to fulfill; I’m just not sure. This is the first time I’ve found anything critical to say about this series, which are still great for entertaining small ones, and teaching them useful life lessons in the process.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. I give this one three and a half stars only because of that last, somewhat troubling story.

Never easy to predict yet always happy with endings

The stories about Oliver and Jumpy written by Werner Stejskal have always been favorites with my daughter. She likes the silliness and the adventures that they take. Even if friends or locations are repeated, the stories are never the same. "Oliver the Babysitter" makes babysitting comical, but also shows that he can get help from his nieces and nephew while his sister is in the hospital having a baby. "Smoke Over the Sea" is an adventure that could go poorly or very well. "Droplets" is a journey through the water cycle that turns into a gathering near the watering hole. With all of these stories, they do not take the traditional route. If you think you can predict what will happen, you will be wrong yet satisfied with the outcome. This book had words my daughter had to figure out like "nappy", or a "trolley" in the grocery store. It was a good example how there are different meanings of English words used in other English-speaking countries.

Fun Adventures Continue with Oliver & Jumpy!

These three stories provide fun and entertainment for children young and old. The illustrations are well done and brilliantly colorful to enhance children's reading experiences.

The first story, The Babysitter, involves Oliver's experiences while he takes care of his nieces and nephews after his sister leaves to deliver another kitten.
The second story, Smoke over the Sea, tells of an adventure that Oliver and Jumpy and friends have when they investigate some strange smoke over the ocean.
The third story, Raindrop, explains the process of rain through the eyes of a raindrop as it moves along in a cloud and finally descends to the earth through rain.

As an adult I found all three stories to be entertaining and especially enjoyed the Raindrop. The author, Werner Stejskal, is a talented and creative write of children's adventure stories.

Oliver and Jumpy Stories 52-54 make another excellent children's book. The book like the others before was beautifully illustrated. Each colorful illustration went perfectly with each fascinating tale. Children everywhere will love this new title. Werner Stejskal has once again lured me into his world of fiction. Oliver is a cat and Jumpy is a kangaroo. Both are best friends. Each of them travel to different places and have fun adventures. In this exciting new tale, Olive and Jumpy learn about fire, water droplets, and get to experience babysitting family members. Funny, sweet, and intriguing. This book is highly entertaining as well as engaging. Children will not only enjoy the fun times ahead but learn about different topics as well. Educational and pure enjoyment. Oliver and Jumpy are the best. I highly recommend Werner Stejskal's well-told stories to readers everywhere. He truly knows how to keep readers interested with each new book.

More cute stories with Oliver and Jumpy

These three stories are cute and my kids liked listening to them. The first story has Oliver watching his sister,s kids while she is in the hospital. This is a funny story and my kids like when thew pancake ends up on his head. The next story is about going to an island and being captured. Thankfully they are only captured to help teach English to a boy. The volcano creatures are funny and were the favorite part of this story. The last story is about the journey of a raindrop. This story is cute and let's kids learn about rain in a fun way. This is a great book for little kids and is fun to read. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest unbiased review. This has not influenced my opinions on the book.

I'm amazed at how many amazing stories that can be written by the author. All of the stories are fun to read and full of educational elements.

Oliver the Babysitter reminds me of the hectic to take care of younger kids and I was happily sharing it with my son. Hoping that he might behave well after knowing how tired Oliver is when babysitting her sister's kids.

Smoke over the Sea has lots of twist turners that me and my son didn't see them coming! We had fun guessing what would happens next!

Rain Drop is an interesting story showing the journey of a little rain drop. Though the number of words might be a bit too much for a picture book, my son did enjoy the story and he started to drink more water and appreciate the water drops!

MORE WONDERFUL ADVENTURES FROM OLIVER AND JUMPY

It is always excitement at story times when we have new adventures from Oliver, a most elegant cat and his family and friends.

Always interesting, the elegant cat is on babysitting duties whilst his sister had her new baby - I think he learned how much work children can be! Then excitement as Oliver, Jumpy and Joey teach words to a little boy showing us alternative ways to write when there is no paper or pencils. And thirdly a great story how the clouds gather their water getting he a user and raining down droplets of water.

As always the artworks are beautiful and the stories carry wonderful learning experiences. Well done!

New babies in nappies enhance a tail of flying pancakes and family mess. A Jonah-esque whale of a tale, follows the thumping of Jumpy’s tail. And a rainy day story of water, a brown bear and honey rounds out the set. There’s something for every child in this nicely different collection. Hot, cold and in-between, with different fonts and different styles of art, plus some nicely taught lessons, this latest entry in the Oliver and Jumpy and collection is well worth the read, especially for Oliver’s many fans. The last tale even ends with a whole page of text, encouraging young listeners who have maybe delayed learning to read.

Disclosure: I got it on a deal

If you have toddler at home, you need to have handy a good deal of stories. Oliver and Jumpy (the adventurous duo) will surely come to your aid.

Writing for kids is could be difficult than it seems. The language has to be simple. The story should be something they can correlate to and of course, if it’s a book then with attractive illustrations.

Most of the stories in this series address these areas well.

And not to forget the value education. I have grown up reading Panchatantra and Aesop’s fables; the kids now have many more options including the adventures of Oliver and Jumpy.

Overall it was a fun read.

“Oliver the Babysitter” In this story Oliver goes to babysit his sister’s children while she is in the hospital. Oliver does the best he can. Will it be enough?
“Smoke Over the Sea” When Oliver spots smoke out in the ocean, he, Jumpy and Joey go to help. They are captured by the people of the island. Will this turn out okay?
“Rain Drop” Droppy is a water drop who joins her brothers and sisters in the cloud. After a while she falls back to earth, but what is her purpose?

I like all the Oliver and Jumpy stories and love the adventures. I didn't understand the change in front in story 54. I found it hard to read. The graphics are wonderful and tell there own story.

Kids will like this

The stories are short so can keep the attention of younger children easily. The language plays well to children and adults can appreciate it as well. The illustrations are bright and perfectly done to stimulate young readers. There is always a bit of a moral.
