This is a book that confounded me in some ways, but also made me very happy. I've read some shorter stories by Ruijters before in various anthologies, but this was the first full lenght book of his that I have read.

All Saints contains a number of shorter stories about nuns in the medieval times, drawn in a style that very much resembles illustrations of that time, using a language and a typeface to match this, but adding a modern sensibility to the stories and the satire that permeates them. It's genuinely fun stuff, if by fun you mean nuns going through horrendous and over the top experiences, fighting the plague (incarnated as skeletons of course) and those little strange men with only one leg and a gigantic foot that for some reason was a favorite with medieval illustrators...

Oddly enough this strange combination works, not the least due to Ruijters being an excellent draftsman. For me, being a comics historian, the fact that these modern comics borrows so much from what can be considered the very earliest of comics, makes the read even more enticing.

Anyway, as much as I liked getting better acquainted with Ruijters' work, it was the beautiful design of the book and the fact that this is actually a volume of C'est Bon Anthology that caught my attention. Yes, this long standing alternative anthology still publishes four volumes a year, but now every other volume is actually a beautiful, hardcover monograph. As a long time fan of the anthology and the esthetics preferred when choosing the comic, but also someone who both love good book design and actually prefers monographs to anthologies, I say keep 'em coming
