Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

Rhodes Breeding Farm is in big trouble and the owner, Tiffany Rhodes, doesn't know what to do. After years of successfully breeding Thoroughbred horses, Tiffany's husband Ellery Rhodes was killed in an accident along with their prize horse Devil's Gambit who was thought to be the next Kentucky Derby winner. Now after four years of grueling work to make the breeding farm profitable again, several newborn foals have died hours after being born. No one knows what is causing these deaths. Suddenly a stranger shows up at the farm offering to buy out Tiffany. She doesn't know what to make of Zane Sheridan or his claim that Devil's Gambit did not die in the auto accident...and her husband may also be alive.

This book has been lingering in my stash of old category romances for years. I'm working on some reading challenges and needed to read a book by Lisa Jackson, so I picked this one up. It was a typical 1980's category romance. Tiffany and Zane fall in love after approximately 30 hours of meeting each other. He leaves to get more information about Devil's Gambit, but doesn't share with her why he is leaving. She just has to trust him...sigh. Why can’t these people just have a discussion? The romance was unexceptional, but I did enjoy the mini-mystery about the dead foals. My rating: 3 Stars.

**I did not finish this one.** And it's the first I'm rating at one star. I read four chapters and decided I couldn't do it.

My first issue was the first chapter Ms. Jackson didn't want to use pronouns so I read a lot of Tiffany this and Tiffany that in one paragraph. This let off in the rest of the chapters and could have been forgivable if I had no other glaring issues.

My second issue was the constant repetition. Every third or fourth paragraph repeated something about Tiffany's worry about the horses, what could this stranger she's strangely attracted to be up to, and X and Y just happened like I didn't read it on the last page. It would have been more fitting for me to start this one yesterday because it was very deja vu and hard to read. If the rest of the book continues in this fashion it could easily be reduced to a 100 page story and be a lot easier to read.

My third issue a couple points in the story. One being a description of a contract being made so the buyer can't get out of it when the pronoun usage clearly implied it was the seller that they wanted to ensnare. Forgivable if the rest of story was okay. But at one point it's stated Tiffany has virtually no memory of a person, then goes on to describe detailed memories she has of them and how they haunt her. On the same page.

Finally, the one that had me set it down: the g-word. Could I please please please pick up a book that doesn't use this slur? Is that too much to ask for? The usage was a lot better than what Douglas Adams' did, sure, but no use of it is okay beyond reclaiming done by those oppressed by it.

Anyone interested in the horse racing business would love this book. Tiffany Rhodes inherited a horse breeding farm from her late husband. The farm is in trouble. Four foals died shortly after birth of a heart defect. All of the foals were sired by a racing horse named Moon Shadow. Tiffany has sold Moon Shadow's services out to other ranchers in the area. So far the only foals to die are the ones on her ranch. No one knows the reason why only Moon Shadow's foals are dying. Now a stranger from Dublin, Ireland, Zane Sheridan, shows up claiming her horse, Devil's Gambit, who was killed in the same tragic accident that also killed her husband is in Ireland siring other winning racing colts. The horse is under the name of King's Ransom now. Is Zane behind the foal's deaths in order to obtain her farm? Is her husband really dead? Why is she attracted to this sinister stranger, Zane Sheridan? Zane started out for revenge and now his plans have changed because he is attracted to Tiffany. Will the truth finally come out?

Tiffany Rhodes was running a breeding farm of thoroughbreds. Her husband had a possible Derby winner when he was in an accident and died. The horse Devil's Gambit was also killed during the accident so she thought. A man by the name of Zane Sheridan came knocking at her door when she was having trouble with the foals she was breeding. Four had died shortly after birth. There was no proof of what was happening. Zane Sheridan told her Devil's Gambit was over in Europe breeding horses. He wanted to buy her farm as a means of getting revenge on her dead husband Ellery. Ellery had stolen his wife from him and cost him his farm for a while during a poker game. Tiffany was not buying any of his lies. He begins to have feelings for her and gives her some evidence of what he was telling her.

Being a Kentuckian I love reading books with horses and those that name The Kentucky Derby.

Tiffany is trying to keep her farm running and finding out what has happened to her goals that are dying.

In walks Zane wanting to but her farm. She isn't selling. He starts telling her about Devil's Gambit that she thought died when her husband did.

He is saying the horse is still alive. She doesn't believe him. She thinks he has more he is hiding.

Will Zane really tell her what is going on? Will Tiffany find out what is happening to the foals?

A good read that had you guessing just like Tiffany what was going on.

A lot of female authors often get their start by writing for one of the many series of Harlequin. Lisa Jackson is clearly one of these authors and I have to say while she does write a satisfying plot for them, I'm not liking her female characters. I hope by the time I open up one of her later novels, I don't have the urge to smack the crap out of the heroine.

I thought this story by Lisa JACKSON a bit too romantic for me.
Ok for those who like love at first sight, with the heroine and hero being beautiful and handsome.
The story itself was also a bit far fetched; but it was easy listening.
Not much substance as a novel.

Good

Good book, a little repetitious, but it was a interesting read. She didn't take as long as she did others to have them show attraction.

A lot going on. It is wrapped up quickly and could have had a few more details added to make sense. Quick read.

Summed Up Too Quickly

I really expected there to be a second part when I reached 90%. It was summed up too quickly. It could have been so much more

That was the absolute worst Lisa Jackson book I have ever read. The entire thing took way to long to come to a very bad and dimwitted conclusion. I read some of the reviews and thought people were just being kind of sour because it was a "love" story.Instead of Lisa jackson killing everyone suspense.

You were right, it was dumb. Made no sense what so ever, and yes... Tiffany was the weakest heroine Jackson has ever created. In fact, Tiffany was too strong of a name for her. She have been named Bunny.

BUMMER!

For really attention-deficit people: everything is repeated repeatedly! The names, the places, the situation. I still want to know why the foals were dying, but I couldn't bear reading this.

When there's so much redundancy, it makes me think the author has a word count she's trying to fill.

Worst book she's ever written ... It doesn't even seem like her style. It was a boring love story that was so predictable but I had to keep reading it because I wanted to know what happened to the horses. it wasn't worth it.

The intrigue in the story and the surprise through that is fun - the general writing style is engaging but: the sex is cringeworthy, the woman a little too fainting heroine and blithering idiot and the motivations a little too contrived.

This must be an older one reissued. It wasn't great, and parts were slow and dull. I finished it because I actually think she's a great author ... just not with this.

This ended up being a lot more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. Very easy to listen to and although it was very obvious what was going to happen; it was an enjoyable read.
