Bedroom eyes and rock hard abs make for yummy eye candy, but Harper Mattox knows a bad boy when she sees him. She's been there, done that, and refuses to buy the T-shirt. The scar was enough of a souvenir.
When Harper agrees to be the temporary secretary at H&V Construction as a favor to her best friends' husband, Adam Hughes, she thought her days would be spent behind the desk, organizing until her heart was content. She had no idea she'd have to put up with the walking sex-on-a-stick Christian Viera. AKA, her other boss. No matter how many times she turns him down, he just oozes more charm in her direction, weakening her knees, as well as her resolve. And it's only her first day!
When Harper's life is threatened, Chris is ready and willing to protect her, showing off an animalistic side she never knew existed. She's known violence in her past and has no room for it in her life now. Is the fiery passion between them enough to stick it out? Can she accept him? Fur, claws, fangs, and all?
*Warning: This book contains strong sexual content and is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
**Shifted Under Construction is a standalone novella, set in the world of The Alpha Division and follows Shifted Undercover.
This was entertaining enough for an evening read, but it's one we've all read a couple dozen times by now. Abused woman meets shifter in the morning, insta-love, explosive sex before lunch, a little unnecessary drama to fill out the pages, more sex, and in love by dinner. Meh. Nothing special there, no world-building, character development, or base for the love.
I did like how Harper stood up for herself and how Chris was often described as looking panicked or confused. It was cute. But I disliked how he came on so strong from the moment he met Harper and wouldn't back off, even when she clearly told him to. He felt like a player, which he's supposed to have been, but the sort that pressures women into sex they don't want to get him to go away. It did not make him endearing.
Further, everyone kept saying, "Yeah, he's a player, but he's really a nice guy" or "He doesn't treat women well, but he's a good person." Um, how exactly can you take that aspect of his character out, exclude it and say he's good. They are one and the same, there is no BUT. If he's a dick to women, he's a dick, period. He sure felt like one to me and never redeemed himself. He got what he wanted from Harper, pusher her away, got possessive, told her didn't want a relationship but still wanted sex, then claimed her again. And she just went along with his every whim on this issue. Meh. I never came to like him.
For a quick read that you can go into knowing what to expect, get a couple chuckles out of this is worth picking up. Just don't expect anything deep or well-developed.

First off, I have to say the book cover is hot!
Maddox has had enough of men, she's had a tough time after choosing a good looking bad boy that turned out to be very bad - horrible actually!
Maddox has agreed to help out her friend and is working as a secretary though the summer break. Her first day in the job is eventful, she meets Chris and finds herself drawn to him, then threats and call hang ups start. Working on a construction site appears to be interesting or should I say dangerous.
Maddox and Chris hardly know each other but in the short time they are together they develop a feeling for each other, could it be more...
This series of novellas is like a splinter book from the series, they're connected to the other characters through the organisation but with a separate group of friends and stories.
An enjoyable whirlwind romance - I'd say Chris is a keeper!

As her day goes on she finds her self being threatened and she believes strongly that its her ex, and things are also getting rather steamy with Chris. First, let me say I love when an author mentions others from previous books into a new series. In this book, we get action and some hot romance. Chris and Adam own a construction company but that is not all they do. Nikki is Adams wife and knows the life they lead but when she suggests her good friend Harper needs a job and a new start she recommends she be the secretary at the guys site. Harper has gone through hell with an ex who is supposed to now be in jail. Prank calls start at the job and then a woman comes in asking for Chris. Harper has no idea at first what is happening and although she wants Chris, she worries. He tells her from the get go he can offer her nothing but 1 night. But everything goes to hell in a hand basket. Can Chris keep Harper safe from those who want to hurt her as well as from himself? What will Harper do when the truth all becomes known?
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are very likeable and Harper is a strong female.
I was gifted a copy of this book for my honest review. C.E. Black
Yummy Christian Viera is a sexy bad boy who runs his own construction company and works for a secret government agency of shifters and humans. The first time Harper Mattox lays eyes on Christian she can't help but want to run the other way. Yet the Sparks are flying in no time and they quickly consummate the work space. But Harper runs away quick because she's skittish after her last boyfriend's abuse. Harper has caught the eye of a psycho and Christian will do whatever is necessary to protect her. CE Black does a great job of keeping the reader turned on and engaged in the story line. Your heart will pump in desire and anxiety. I loved every minute of this book and Christian is my new favorite tiger shifter. Harper is the perfect mix of sass and feistiness. These two are explosive together and you will be kept on the edge of your seat the entire book panting for more
Was an okay story. I was kind of annoyed everything literally happens in the span of 24 hours. Harper has left her verbally abusive and cheating ex after he got physical. She doesn't remember much from the week she spent in the hospital, but she does see things in her dreams she knows can't be true. Chris is a tiger shifter. He's a player, but every woman knows the score before they hit the sheets. But the temp secretary has him feeling so many confusing things and wanting things that will never work.
An insta-love shifter book about a couple that I just couldn't get into. In the prologue, we meet Harper, who is dating a "bad boy" who treats her like garbage. When she finally stands up to him and tells him she wants to end the relationship, he attacks her. We find out later in the book that she actually had to spend time in the hospital because he beat her so bad.
Then we meet Chris, who is supposed to be the hero of the story, but I think that term should be used very loosely to describe him. He's another "bad boy", and when he flirts with Harper, she is very clear in telling him that she has no interest in trying to reform a bad boy again. He's a player who everyone claims is a "good guy" but then warns Harper to stay away from because he's not good with relationships. News flash, I guy who treats the women he sleeps with like dirt isn't a "good guy" - he's a douchebag.
Despite her refusal to go on a date or meet him for lunch, Chris shows up unannounced on her lunch break. They end up getting it on, and then he flees. He stops talking to Harper until after an accident on the job site where she's almost hurt. Then he reminds her that he never promised a relationship, and Harper reminds him that she had set clear boundaries that he kept pushing. And then he tells her that she shouldn't take the lengths he'll go to "get between her thighs" to mean that he's interested in her. What a winner /s.
I just didn't like this guy. He later claims he was "scared" or whatever other BS is excuse, but it wasn't enough for me. He was a jerk that never redeemed himself. No thanks.
Harper Mattox’s first day at H&V Construction is enough to make a gal run for cover! It doesn’t go as the usual first day awkwardness goes. Nope. For Harper she has a few things that one should never have to endure on the first day of work if they are expected to return for day two.
Monday...
1. An ex from hell; 2. A hot as sin boss, aka Christian Viera; 3. A jealous rival; 4. Several harassing messages and phone calls; 5. Hot-scorching sex; and 6. A near death experience.
Wonder what Tuesday will bring...
A leopard, a tiger and a wolf; a death in the kitchen and a shocking revelation. It’s enough to make you stark-raving mad!! The attraction between Harper and and Chris will not be denied, unless of course Harper’s ex, Donnie, has his way. Harper knows better than to mix it up with Chris yet she can’t stop herself. Chris thinks he knows how this will go but he’s in for a bit of a wake up call. It’s a train wreck from the start but I enjoyed the crash ending.
Fast-paced and humorous (probably not meant to be) tale about a deer caught in the headlights, aka Harper, and a playboy who’s run his course. Some predictability along the way but what a ride.
Overall, the book wasn't terrible. I only paid $.99, so I can't be too disappointed. The story line was okay, if not a bit of a teenage romance cliche. It was predictable and a bit overdone, but for a quick afternoon read it wasn't the worst. I enjoyed the main character. Harper had a rough past and clearly didn't have a lot of confidence, but she still stood up for herself and could fake the confidence when she needed to. While I enjoyed Harper, I never really liked Chris. Everyone said he was a player, but no one really called him out for the dick he was. It really bothered me that he got what he wanted from Harper. He wanted sex, she tried to keep her distance, but he kept pursuing her and she finally gave in. He seemed very back and forth, I never really got the chance to trust him throughout the book.
It's not a satisfying read, the story is too cliche and the characters are pretty under-developed. But like I said, overall it isn't a terrible book; I'll likely read it again sometime when I want a quick read.
This novel was painful to get through. Ugh. Save me from authors who just want to make money off their fantasies rather than actually write a novel for themselves. This book writes itself. Think of a bunch of shifter romance novel cliches and string them together and you have this novel. There is nothing new here- no interesting plot, no new shifter lore, no character development, no romantic relationship development, and overall, no real substance. There are 3 graphic sex scenes in this super short, “love” at first sight novel that takes place over 24 hours - typical alpha male behavior, typical weak female character and typical stupid decisions by ppl who are supposed to know better. These guys work for the CIA (a bit of info that is dumped in the reader's lap about 75% of the way through the novel), and yet when one of their women is threatened, they think nothing of a phone call that draws them away from her and leaves her unprotected. DUH. Seriously, don’t waste your money.

3.5 stars. Whilst I loved touching base with the Alpha Division gang the first half of this book had things happening too fast to be believed. No woman who was hospitalised by her cheating ex would have sex hours within meeting a man, especially one who showed all the indications of being a player. A bit more time between them meeting and having sex would have been more believable. Saying that I enjoyed the second half very much. The plot was valid and the action interesting. Liked the heroine Harper, she had gumption and warmed to the hero Chris when he gave Harper the time she asked for, allowing her to come to terms with things. This is my honest review of this book.
This the story of Harper, a curvy young woman who got involved with the wrong man. Donnie is an abusive shifter (although she doesn’t know that). She ends up in the hospital and he ends up in jail, although not for long. Harper moves on with her life secure with his incarceration and a restraining order. She takes a summer job as a secretary on a construction site and meets Chris, one of the owners and someone she wants immediately. She can’t figure out why she’s so attracted when she hasn’t wanted anyone since the fiasco with Donnie. This story is sweet but sexy and has some unexpected twists.
Shifted Under Construction by C.E. Black is a fast-paced paranormal romance. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Chris and Harper's story is packed with drama, action, suspense, humor and 5 alarm fire heat. I enjoyed reading Shifted Under Construction and look forward to reading more from C.E. Black in the future. Shifted Under Construction is book 5 of the Alpha Division Series but it can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Instafreebie. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Escaping one horror now can she live with this new decision
After Donnie, Harper got a new summer job where she meets Chris he’s hot as hell and cocky with it, then things start happening on the site a large wooden beam narrowly misses her then notes appear on her desk and odd phone calls that just hang up when another note is found she shows Adam her boss and Chris it is decided that Chris would stay at home with her to keep her safe, oh boy one hot night then if all went south with an urgent call for Chris. Now it’s your turn a must read if you enjoy shifter stories however this using your normal shifter story. I recommend this book to you fans
This book would appeal to readers of shifter romances. There were a number of proofreading errors that irritated me but I was more disappointed than anything. Harper somehow gets herself involved with two shifters without knowing it. Chris and Adam talk about a mission but that's a dud as far as the story goes. If its supposed to encourage readers to buy the next book then I'm afraid it failed with me. I like shifter stories and I'm sure that there are many readers out there who will love this book but I'm not one of them.
This story was right to the point. There were no detours or added drama. I felt for Harper and her trauma. She has been through a lot and then meets a playboy. Chris is really a basic bachelor with a hard job. He has great intentions but I don't think he understand how his actions are portrayed. They were good together but it was quick and unrealistic. I was disappointed that the fighting was short and the heroine was written in 2 different ways. She was afraid of violence and runs away but then she uses a fun with amazing accuracy. I was just not convinced.
I liked the way the epilogue echoed the prologue, I thought it was clever and earns an extra star on hits own. I can't say that I !liked the rest of the book. It developed way too fast, and the male lead was pretty much a jerk and a player. And then the turn where his ex thinks he's "too nice" although he's a one and done kind of guy a d admits it. The drama was convoluted and way too convenient for the timeline of the story.
Shifted Under Construction is #5 in the Alpha Division Series. It is a stand alone novella, these books do not have to be read in order. The book has interconnecting characters, fast-paced action, little angst and a HEA. Everything seems to happen within a 24 hour period so it makes it a little unbelievable because we don't have in depth connection to the characters. But if you are interested in a fast read with some shape-shifters thrown in then this book is for you.
Shifter series. Harper recently survived an abusive relationship and wanted no man in her life. Chris is a tiger shifter and womanizer. He sets his sights on Harper, who is working at the construction site owned by Adam and himself. Harper is best friends with Nikki, Adam's wife. Harper has no idea her crazy ex or her bosses are shifters, though the government has known about them for years. W hat will happen when her crazy ex and her sexy boss turn her world into a hellish nightmare?
This was a simple, quick read but I feel that it could have been so much better. The characters were appealing and well developed and the storyline was interesting but I feel that with some expansion and development, instead of being a short read it could have been a full length read but the execution for this just wasn't there. I wish the author would developed this into a full length book and give it the energy that it needs.
Reading this does encourage me to go back to read Nikki and Adam’s story.
In Chris and Harper’s story you have a human who is totally unaware of the paranormal world. A man-whore who feels it is allright because he tells the women ahead of time that nothing will come of it.
We had some side action in this story ; a little sabotage a little jealous exes on both sides - A story where everyone is keeping secrets even her best friend .
I read this in the “Paranormals Ever After” anthology.
Paranormal romance at its very best. This book.has everything fans want, sexy alpha men, curvy girl, instant attraction hot passionate sex with an action thriller and suspense story line that will keep the reader turning the pages rapidly to see what happens next. Now I am going to look out some more of this author a work.
I downloaded Shifted Under Construction as a free book from Amazon. This was a good story for a freebie, but it relied on coincidences and multiple (unconnected) villains to try and maintain a level of suspense. I especially dislike insta-love(lust) stories where the protagonists are having sex within hours. Not for me, but some readers make enjoy.
Loved Harper from the start! When she told her violent, mean boyfriend to leave he came at her with eyes turning colors and fangs growing! Then she meets Chris and falls hard for the bad boy again! So glad it worked out for them. This book has it all from sex to mystery to scary to Love !
What an amazing fantasy story I love these shifter stories with a fantastic character that find it hard to be in a relationship. These stories are full of action and amazing characters can't wait for more thanks for the writing C.E Black keep writing and we will keep reading 💛👍
Part of a series, can be read as a standalone, however I think it’d provide more depth if you read them both. I haven’t read book 1 and still enjoyed the story. Likable characters, simple setting, more focus on the connection than the shifter sides of things. Nice. I read as part of the compilation Paranormal Ever After as an advance reader copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Harper and Chris's love story is so sweet, fast developing maybe. But oh so good, then she must decide if she can except him or not... temporary he says as long as it last. But will that change to forever?
