Welcome to the page for Patricia Rose, award-winning, multi-genre author.

An Army brat until her teens, Patricia relied heavily on novels for entertainment and companionship. Every new duty station meant new schools, new teachers, and new kids. She read voraciously and began writing stories of her own from a young age, at first to continue living in the worlds of magic created by others, then to create her own. Patricia received a BA in English and taught for two years. After that, she spent the next twenty-ish years as a plaintiffs’ Social Security disability paralegal before settling down outside Louisville, Kentucky with her spice and fur-children. In recent years, she’s concentrated on self-publishing genre fiction novels and taking multiple adult writing courses. She also freelance edits for other indie writers, trying single-handedly to alleviate the double stigma associated with self-published genre fiction. Both Patricia and her writing are works in progress.

Iron Mike is her first publication and tells the story of a teenage boy, Michael Sanderlin, who, after the world's population is virtually wiped out, must step up to the mark to get his younger sister to safety. Along the way, he encounters other survivors, experiences heartbreak and tragedy, and gets drawn into a game of galactic politics. Can he survive long enough to become Iron Mike?

Hopeless, Patricia's second novel, is a complete departure. In this novel, you will be drawn into the seedy underbelly of human sex trafficking. Hope's best friend goes missing, and she hooks up with an FBI agent to find her. Thing is, the girls being targeted are into kink...serious kink! Can Hope overcome her inhibitions, and stay alive long enough to save her friend, when she is the bait?

This book has been getting some high praise across social media, and although not a genre I would normally read, I decided to give it a try. I don't normally read post apocalyptic fiction as so much of it seems tired and stereotyped. Not Iron Mike! This story has been created with one hell of an imagination.

You're drawn into the story immediately when Earth is attacked with devastating consequences. The impact is felt worldwide, but the story focuses on Mike, Kari and a small group of survivors. Mike has to grow up fast, look out for his younger sister, Jenn, and get a group of young children to a place of safety (and that's just the beginning.)

The pace of the story is maintained through the use of the POV of the main characters. Each takes turns to have their say. I found this way of presenting the story easy to follow and thought it helped character development. My favourite POV was Hershey the dog. He helps provide some lighter moments, and it made me smile that the author seems to know the inner workings of a dogs brain so well!

This book made me feel so many emotions. Laughter (because of Hershey,) anger (at how badly people can treat each other in times of crisis,) and sadness. It really takes a lot to make me upset as I read. Some of the things Mike experiences and has to do, no one should, especially someone so young. The way his thoughts and feelings were portrayed was excellently done.

I'll be recommending this book to everyone, and after such an intriguing ending, I hope there's going to be a sequel.

3-1/2 stars.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book. I liked the premise of the cause of the "end of the world" instead of a sickness or natural disaster wiping out most of the world. I thought the pacing was spot on and did not find myself getting bored along the way.

I liked the characters in this story, as well, and getting the viewpoint of Hershey the dog, even if he was smarter than a lot of people I know. Ha ha!

My complaints about the book were there were a few times I felt like the writing faltered and went a little juvenile compared to most of the rest of the book. Also, there wasn't a lot of back story as to where these aliens came from and why they attacked Earth. It didn't detract from the story, but it just felt a little lacking.

One other thing that bothered me was this book seemed like it should be geared more towards a YA audience, but there was content in here that definitely was too adult for pre-teen readers...at least in my opinion. Not a lot, but enough that I would think twice about the younger readers picking it up.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

A fantastic debut from Patricia Rose. The writing and editing is excellent, the plot well executed, and the characters believable.

Iron Mike is dystopian-science fiction. At the heart of this there is a great romance, a lot of humor, and intense drama to balance out the story.

It's a story about survival against the odds. The characters aren't insta-heroes. They're thrown into unthinkable conditions and situations, and have to work their way out of them.

Character growth is phenomenal. You go through it with them, imagining yourself in their situations, and how you would react.

Told from multiple perspectives, the work is delivered in a unique narrative structure, to give you something original and unforgettable.

This is a book that grips you. I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Well Written, Creative Sci-Fi with an alien invasion

“Iron Mike” is creative Science Fiction with an unusual alien invasion. The huge, lethal “worms” have adaptive camouflage, and they’re unlike any aliens I’ve encountered in other Sci-Fi books. Their caretakers are advanced beings with the very human foible of greed. The main character, Iron Mike, is appealing. He’s clever, principled, caring, fearless, and often brilliant. His girlfriend is independent and can hold her own.

The story has abundant action, adventure, danger. Most of the humans and many other mammals are killed by the advanced alien energy beams. Who will survive? What will become of Earth as the deadly worms take over? What will happen to Iron Mike? This is fast-paced, well written, and an excellent read.

This is a first I have read from Patricia Rose and have to say it blew me away. Reading about Mike and how fast he had to grow up was surprising. I mean at first it started off like he was just a whiny kid but we see a lot of him we never expected. Gone is the young teenager and now is a man who not only has to stay alive but protect everybody he sees including his little sister. Patricia Rose did a great job in showing us how quick things can change in one second. I loved that no matter how terrible things are Mike does his hardest to maintain his cool yet inside he is struggling like everybody else right now. Definitely hoping there is more of this book for the ending seemed like there can be more just hoping. All in all I have to say even though this is not my typical book genre it really pulled me into it. If you looking for romance and a happily ever after it is not in here but instead there is hope, second chances and most of all it is a book that shows us to keep strong and faith.

I am not the audience for this book. I read to escape. Therefore books that dwell endlessly on drama and misery do not appeal. Plus the sci fi aspect of this story is essentially meaningless. By focusing so completely on the misery caused by an alien attack, including the hopelessness of beating the aliens, the aliens become a side note to the story. We are told of one alien and its slow realization that humans are sentient so it seems clear that is what will save humanity in the end- I don't know for certain because I did not finish the book. Stopped about 60% in.

Aliens attack with an E.M.P. so powerful it kills 98% of humanity. 16 year old Mike was arguing with his mom when she falls over dead so he takes his 9 year old sister and head to Gran's farm. Grandpa is dead so Mike helps move the body. Gran cooks up a bunch of food, makes observations about how Mike is the man of the family now and he'll have to learn to keep his sister in line, and then kills herself, leaving instructions for Mike to take his sister and head to Fort Knox. Of all the vast coincidences in the universe Mike and sis meet up with the daughter of the Fort Knox commander on the way. They also pick up a bunch of kids, losing two along the way to fairly horrific alien death traps that suck people into the ground slowly.

The group makes it to Fort Knox where Mike, who became known as Iron Mike along the way, joins what remains of the military. The Iron Mike story is interspersed with two other stories: One about a pretty intelligent dog and his owner and the other about the alien studying humanity.

Bottom line: No action or adventure, just drama, so not for me.

This was one of the best YA novels I've read. It treats the young people like real people. Yes, Mike has to grow up quickly, but he's got a good foundation for it. Kari, too, needs to put her rebellious ways behind her, but, again, she's got the background for it.

One of the things that really bothers me in YA, is when the author gives the main characters lots of sexual heat, yet, somehow, the relationship never gets consummated. Aside from the non-necessity of giving them the heat if you're not going to do anything with it, it's incredibly unrealistic. People who escape danger tend to celebrate it by affirming life. And if the heat is already there? Please, YA writers. You don't have to be graphic; it can all happen offstage, but stop being ridiculous about it!

So, yeah, Ms Rose doesn't fall into that trap, and I commend her courage and honesty.

Do I have any criticisms? Yes. It's very U.S. and white centered. One assumes the entire planet was invaded, but I can't recall a single character saying anything about that. And there's a very distinct lack of diversity in the characters, especially given where the story takes place - on and around a military base in Kentucky.

I was given a copy of this in exchange for an honest and constructive review. I was totally unprepared for what I read.
I don’t often get book hangovers, but right now I’m suffering from the worst one ever. For those of you who don’t know what a book hangover is, it’s when you’ve just finished a book that drew you in so much that the outside world just disappeared.
Iron Mike is such a book. I lost control of my will after the first few pages. I couldn’t stop reading, as this end of the world epic grabbed me by the heart strings, and dragged me through a tale that had me laughing one minute, and crying the next. And there were plenty of both, believe me.
The main character is a young man called Mike, who survives the initial alien attack along with his kid sister, Jenny. How Mike becomes ‘Iron’ Mike is a story in itself, and brilliantly executed. It’s up to him to get his sister to safety, but along the way he picks up a few stragglers, desperate survivors who you will grow to care for deeply.
Patricia’s character development is wonderful, and she carries out ‘show, not tell’ effortlessly. I can’t believe this is her first book.
The story is fast paced and exquisitely imaginative. You will live this book through the eyes of some of the most loveable side characters I’ve ever met, and yes, it felt like I knew them all, so much so I broke down in tears quite a few times.
Along the way there are strokes of genius where Earth history is subtly brought into play, and some of the humour had me laughing out loud. I did actually snort coffee down my nose at one point.
The enemy is brilliant portrayed. The main monsters are quite horrific, but the alien master race will surprise you. I won’t spoil it for you.
A love story comes in about halfway through though it’s obvious it would happen from the start. It’s a wonderful relationship, a light part among the dark of the post apocalyptic world.
Oh, then there’s Hershey, the most loveable and funny character I have ever met. Again, I won’t spoil it for you, but be prepared to smile a lot as you read his parts. I defy you not to.
Now for my rating, and you’ll probably know I’m giving it a five. If I could give it more I wouldn’t hesitate. This has been an absolute joy to read, and I feel privileged to have been asked to read it in exchange for this completely honest and heartfelt review.
One of the best books I have EVER read!

Iron Mike by Patricia Rose is a book I discovered on Facebook, when I saw a couple of reviews for it. I read the reviews and decided to give it a read. See below for my thoughts!

Synopsis (from the author): NOTICE: This novel recommended for ages 16+ due to language and some sexual content.

When the black ships drop from the clouds, billions die. The weapons are silent, the effects, lethal. Nations fall. Humanity crumbles. Their mission is simple: seed the earth. Feed their creatures. Harvest the crops.

The war is over before it begins. Or is it?

From the ashes of our memory, heroes are forged. In the shell of a surviving outpost, one boy is asked to do the impossible. Rising to the challenge, Mike Sanderlin becomes a man, then a soldier, and finally, a hero. He’s more than a symbol and less than perfect, but to save his younger sister and fight for Earth, he’ll become Iron Mike.

With an alien ally, Iron Mike will hurl himself into the teeth of a war that can only have one winner.

Built to fight. Born to win.
Iron Mike is ready. Are you?

What I liked: The story grabbed me from the start. The alien extermination of the humans to allow for harvesting the planet was a great start. Mike becoming Iron Mike was a cool, but critical piece of the story, and the change in Kari (who started out as an unlikeable character to me) was well done. The adventures of Mike and Kari entertained me, but my favorite character of all was Hershey, the dog! I also enjoyed the efforts of the aliens to right the wrong they had perpetrated on humanity.

What I didn’t like: There were a couple of things that bothered me. It was never clear exactly why some humans survived the attack. Though it wasn’t all that important to the story, it did keep me wondering. The second criticism I had was the stereotypical bad guys who captured Mike and Kari during their mission. I thought that part could have been handled differently.

Overall impression: Iron Mike by Patricia Rose is a great story with excellent characters, plenty of action, sacrifice for loved ones, and triumph in the face of overwhelming odds. I recommend this one for anyone 16+ who enjoys dystopian science fiction!

Iron Mike
By Patricia Rose

I was given a book in exchange for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
5
Warning adult content

Ok you probably don't know me, but I do not rate every book a 5. In fact , since I have started reviewing books for this blog, I have not rated any book a 5. This book is a 5.

Mike and his sister Jenny amazingly, randomly survive an alien attack. Mike takes supplies and his nine year old sister out to try to find a refuge. Along the way, he picks up Kari and some children. None of whom he knows, but it is not in him to leave them stranded and helpless. Then the journey begins and to quote Dr. Seuss "oh the places you'll go." Aliens , and not friendly ones, are on Earth.

There is no way to tell anymore without spoiling it. I will tell you that I do not remember a book that made me laugh or cry as much as this one did. Although I only told you about the beginning of Mike's journey, there are many other journeys that are explored. Hershey's might be the most fascinating, but I will let you decide for yourself. I don't normally give orders, but read this book now. What are you waiting for?

This is an intense. I was blown away by this book. It hits all the major parts that are essential to a complete story. You have different point of views which have many different sides to the apocalypse. I mean seriously you have Hersey the dog telling his point of view which was amazing. It was extremely unique adding that. I have read many dystopian books but this is one is going to stand out for me. I loved the whole story. I learned some things I didn't know about snakes which is a thumbs up from me. My favorite character was Iron Mike. I enjoyed watching him grow into a man. I feel very protective of him. My favorite part was when they found out how to defeat the Feeders. I was jumping up and down. Now I had a complete experience reading this. I read part of the ebook, paperback and listened to the audio. The audio was my favorite because the narrator did a fantastic job. The writing was elegant and flowed nicely. I hate to say goodbye for now but I hope to read more from this characters. This is the first book I have read from this author. I will recommend this book to all my dystopian loving friends.

Don't be thrown off by the "young adult" classification

I was incredibly surprised by the maturity of the writing in this book. I'm not a big young adult fan, but judging by the reviews I decided to give this one a shot and I can say, I'm very glad I did!! Too many of the young adult books I've tried to read feel like they're written by the audience they're meant for, and sorry to say, that's not a compliment. Patricia Rose did an excellent job here. I only had a few issues and they were minor, just slightly annoying.

Possible spoilers!
Towards the last third of the book, or so, Mike and Kari's father seem to speak to Kari with the exact same tone and wording... which is SUPER creepy, considering Mike and Karis relationship.

Although I really liked the Hershey chapters, "snarly face" got annoying really fast. Reading from the dogs point of view was interesting but kinda got tiresome towards the end.

Other than those issues, I really liked this book! Patricia Rose is going to end up with a massive fan base if she continues to write great stories while treating her readers like they have half a brain, and can tread past a fifth grade level.

Dystopian/end of the world books are not my typical genre, so when I was asked to edit this novel, I went in with an open mind. Boy, was I absolutely blown away! Iron Mike is the story of a teenager, Mike Sanderlin, who is forced to grow up before his time when an unknown force wipes out nearly all the people on the planet. Those remaining must fight for survival against an alien race, determined to "harvest" planet Earth.

Wow doesn't even begin to describe how I felt reading this novel. Instead of focusing on the details of the alien invasion, Patricia Rose brings you into the lives of the people directly impacted. You'll laugh, cry, and love right alongside these wonderful characters, including an awesome dog named Hershey.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to try something a little different. I couldn't put it down, and I'm begging for more! I see many great things coming from this author in the future!

This was a wonderful book! I like these types of books but many of them don't fulfill the promise..this one did hands down. It drew me in quickly. The characters were great (especially Iron Mike) and the story was believable. It was not centered on fighting the aliens, but more about the characters themselves. And I love a good character driven story. For a first novel this was fantastic. The editing was great..no real errors that I saw and the plot flowed well. I can't wait to read the next one from this new author. The only real issue I had with it, and it was minor, was the ending seemed a bit too quickly finished. I wish she would have gone a bit further with it, but I hated the story was ending anyway so that may have something to do with it. Great first book..most definitely recommend this one.

One of the best debut novels I've ever read

I don't even know where to begin. Typically not my genre to read, I felt compelled to read this after hearing several people comment about it. I was not disappointed.
This story captured me from the beginning. I was pulled into a story weaved so tightly that I found myself reading until my eyes blurred. Iron Mike is a character you can't help but love. I cried, I laughed, I yelled at him but most importantly, I couldn't stop reading!
I must admit that my favorite person in this entire book is Hershey. What a great viewpoint for this story.
Patricia Rose has written one of my favorite stories of the year. I cannot wait to see what this talented author has in store for readers next.

A gripping, imaginative, and suspenseful story that fully engages the reader's emotions, IRON MIKE by Patricia Rose is a true page-turner in the manner of THE STAND, THE MIST, FALLING SKIES, and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. I was instantly hooked and involved in this coming-of-age tale, set during an alien attack on Earth. It's really hard to put down. Characters are wonderfully realized, especially a most unusual one: a dog named Hershey. Hershey's take on the actions and motivations of his beloved humans lends both sympathy and a bit of welcome humor to the story.

Some of the incidents in the novel are truly heart-wrenching, and many involve white-knuckle suspense. This is a first-rate sci fi adventure!

I thoroughly enjoyed IRON MIKE and highly recommend it!

Definitely my kind of apocalypse. And the survivors aren't always the ones you expect.

Utilising an interesting array of perspectives, much like World War Z, Iron Mike takes you through the end of the world as we know it...and into a brave new world where martial law is necessary for survival of the human species. This book has the refreshing angle of being about the difficult choices those in leadership and on the front lines make to survive in the wake of disaster - something I haven't seen done this well since Niven's Lucifer's Hammer.

It isn't all dark and gloom, as you might expect, either - the forays into Hershey's perspective bring light into the story in unexpected ways.

If you love a good apocalypse that ends in hope...you must read this.

I loved this book because it took me back to my first love in reading: science fiction. An end-of-the-world tale, it does not deal with natural disasters or zombie apocalypses which are so done and predictable. I loved the "Scientist-Farmer" and "Farmer-Herdsman" type names used for the aliens; I think it was a very creative story. I also feel that the duality of the aliens as both good and cruel was well done. One thing did bother me, and that was the absence of the sister throughout most of the story. I would have loved to see more Mike/Jenn interaction. It is not the story of a boy and his sister, as I expected. It is really a story of boy meets bad girl and, together, they face adversity. This was a great read and absolutely future movie material!

Well this was an interesting debut novel.
I can see this being made into a film.
What interesting concepts..... an alien invasion and several narratives.
A narrative from an alien, a dog and the story of the humans.
An interesting concept too that aliens would struggle to comprehend
transubstantiation.... or as a friend once wrote in a poem... the bread and jam of religion.
I loved that this was a huge part of this novel.
I am not always comfortable with military gung ho dialogue in novels... so skipped a lot of that.
But I read quickly and thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a dog, his human and the aliens.
I only hope that I meet the classifications to be considered sapient.

Copied from my Audible account.

Where does Iron Mike rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was one of my more favorite audiobooks. I do not get to listen to many, but this is in the top 10.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Iron Mike?
Hershey's parts. Seeing things from a dog's perspective was interesting and often funny. I can imagine a dog thinking what he was thinking.

What does Zachary Liebenstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I really like his reading of this book. I especially enjoyed his narration of the dog Hershey. I felt his voice worked well for Sci-fi. While not too similar, his narration reminded me of Will Wheaton in Armada. I plan to look into other books just because he is the narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have if I could. I do not get to listen to books as often as I would like, but yes this is one I would have liked to have been able to listen to in one sitting. Shame I did not have this for my long drive to NY.

Any additional comments?
There were parts that, to me, were upsetting and I was not sure I wanted to continue. I have heard nothing but good things about this book and I loved the narration so I kept going. So glad I did. I realized why the author felt the need to add these parts and while I still did not like the situation, I pulled up my big girl panties and got over them.

So Well-Crafted!

Having heard how this story impacted my friend, I had to read it. Now that I have, I'm so thankful I did. It's so well-crafted!

The emotions and action are dynamic. They are everything you'd expect, plus so much more. Even in the quiet, there's intensity. Your mind is always racing for the characters you fall in love with or despise so deeply.

The aliens are refreshing and original. Even when elements are recycled from trope expectations, there are twists. More so, the author did a great job making it feel authentic.

I definitely recommend this dark dystopian tale. It isn't perfect, but the imperfections aren't noticed because it's so compelling. I just want more!!!!

Hershey makes it.

Buying a book that has been recommended to you can be a bit hit and miss, this is definitely a hit!
Mike is a great character and the story is vivid and exciting, but using the POV of a dog, Hershey, makes this book extra special. The ending was not what I was expecting at all, though it works well and was a fitting conclusion.
I happily pass on the recommendation.

I listened to the audiobook.

The story is wonderful. I especially liked the chapters told from Hershey's point of view. Definitely a creative (and very successful!) way to tell a story. I will gladly seek out works by Patricia Rose in the future.

The narration of this audiobook is terrible. Very mechanical and robotic with weird pauses, oddly mispronounced words, and completely unemotional delivery. I will actively avoid anything narrated by Zachary Liebenstein.

Unique and enjoyable story

The story was a great read. The unique perspective was well written. I personally liked the dog's perspective. I love dogs and always am wondering what my dog is trying to tell me. She looks so exasperated sometimes. I look forward to reading any book by Ms. Rose! Well done!

awesome read!

I’m not typically a sci fi fan but I loved this book. Mike, Kari, Hershey, and Dick are wonderful characters who quickly had me invested in their dilemma. I won’t reveal too much about the plot but I will say I recommend this book VERY highly. I would DEFINITELY read a sequel.

One of the best I`ve read in a while. If her future books match this, I will be rating her up with some of my very favorites . The closest comparison I could make would be to RAH`s juvy`s. Thanks for the story.
