Sage Barnaby never asked for this soulless and friendless existence, but despite being unwelcome, the darkness found her and made her its companion. When her sister fell sick Sage became desperate, so she turned to the one malevolent thing that could reverse her sister’s fate, but she was cheated.
In a final effort for redemption, Sage summons her guardian angel, which just happens to be the most beautiful and arrogant creature in Heaven and Hell. They embark on a grim and twisted journey to uncover a sacred object that might have the power to save her soul. Sage and the angel face a series of challenges that test their loyalty and their morality, and together, they come to discover that their quest decide more than Sage’s fate alone.
Sage Barnaby gave up everything to save her sister, but she died anyway. Now she has nothing left to lose, and that makes her very, very dangerous.
“This powerful first novel tells a riveting and supernatural story of angelic forces pitted against the power of the devil. An intimate account of betrayal and salvation that requires no translation to engage us.” — Anthony Laurino, retired publishing executive at Penguin “If any young writer knows how to channel the traditions of gothic fantasy and horror to spin an elegant tale full of beauty and bad things, it’s Bret Bucci.” — Kenny Herzog, Pop-Culture Critic
Bret Bucci was born August 2, 1988. She grew up in Tarrytown, New York and attended Sleepy Hollow High School, named for Washington Irving's famous tale. After graduating from Quinnipiac University in 2010, Bucci focused primarily on playwriting and had several of her short dramas produced in writing competitions in New York City. Flightless Bird, her first novel, was picked up by Apprentice House publishing company and released October 15th 2015.
*The author of this book sent me this paperback copy in exchange for an honest review, so don’t expect anything less than that. I will always give an honest review, be it a positive one or a negative one.*
What an incredible read! FLIGHTLESS BIRD was all I was hoping it would be and so much more! This book blew my mind. I read it in one day, I was so enthralled.
There are so many things I would like to share however I will keep them at a minimum so I don’t spoil this book for anyone. But I can tell you that story is not the typical fallen angels. I have read my share of books on Fallen Angels and Demons, and let me tell you, this book’s plot is totally unique.
The book is about Sage, when she was 8 years old her sister got sick. To help her sister, she made a deal with the devil. By giving away her soul, he promises to save her sister’s life. Seeing that he’s the devil, naturally he cheated her out of the deal. Now Sage’s only hope is her guardian angel.
Why did I give it 4 stars? There a few things that really bothered me:
1. The Romance. In this book, I expected something will happen between Sage and Belial (her guardian angel) any romantic feelings but nope, we get none. Maybe at the end, they started to feel something for each other but other than that, they were practically strangers.
2. The ending. WHAT KIND OF ENDING IS THAT? Like really…why? I think Sage did a terrible mistake at the end of the book and yes the book ended with a cliffhanger *sigh*
The story itself had me so that I literally could not put this book down until I finished– I started it yesterday, got about three quarters through last night, and finished it first thing this morning. The whole thing took a few hours to read, and I loved every minute of it. I really hope next book will have more steamy romance and mystery and suspense.
Bret Bucci's debut novel is the beginning of a journey. Flightless Bird is a journey into the supernatural, but it's grounded in human needs and desires. It's about taking or wasting opportunities, and getting second chances, something we could all benefit from thinking about. The plot moves quickly and the description is vivid. Bucci manages to fit in humor to give you breaks between the hard scenes. Some of the descriptive scenes (thinking the early chapters and the torture scene) are right up there with the best. Cinematic quality and potential.

I thought Flightless Bird was a great read and totally worth my time. I strongly recommend all readers to read this because I am sure you all will have a great time with this! Mow, Ms. Bucci, please give the sequel to me because that CLIFFHANGER killed me. :(
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I did not expect this book to be this good. It was amazing! I love everything about it; the characters, plot and writing were all done beautifully. This book blew my mind!
I've read a lot of fallen angels type of book and I can assure you that the plot is very unique. I enjoyed every minute while reading this. It gave me a lot of feels; I felt sad, elated, frustrated, disgusted, pissed and touched. I seriously had to stop and take a break before continuing because some of the scenes were very intense and I had a hard time coping on what is happening. Let me tell you now, this book is full of raw emotions and once you started reading it you wouldn't want to stop.
Although, Sage Barnaby pissed me a lot I adore how much she loved her sister. Sage is a impulsive, hard-headed and foul-mouthed character; she speaks her mind and she wouldn't care even if she hurt other people. I know that she's not a charming character and I seriously want to strangle her because of the choices that she made but I love the way her character developed all throughout this book. I really like all the characters specially Belial and Logan. They are simply adorable! Sage is indeed very lucky to have these baes.
I take back what I said. I didn't love everything about this book because the ending really pissed me! It just shows how stupid and naive Sage is. I think she made a very terrible and stupid mistake.
If you still haven't read this book. Well, you definitely should. I highly recommend Flightless Bird by Bret Bucci. I can't wait to read the second book. (yes, it has a sequel! I wont accept if this is a standalone because I need more! The cliffhanger is killing me.)
I started this book blindly - without knowing really what the book is about. I've read the blurb but I couldn't really process it through. Once you are almost a quarter in, you will truly understand the plotline and why the book is titled as Flightless Bird.
I love this book. Every word and every moment. Especially a hot angel with the name of Belial. And not to mention that deep down, he truly, deeply cares about Sage and is a really sweet guy/angel. It is very different than any other books that I have ever read. I have never read about angels and demons and hell.
I think that Sage made a really foolish mistake at the end. Really foolish! She just can't let it go. She was given a second chance but she just let the opportunity to go to waste.
All in all, it was a pleasant read. Definitely worth to include in your never ending tbr. And I can't wait to read more of Sage Barnaby's chronicles!
Loved this book! Couldn't put it down during the holiday break. Great character development. A story of loss and love which makes you feel for the characters. Waiting for the next book in the series!
