In all corners of the world men whisper about the legends of Iski Flare filling their mundane lives with tales of his bravery. Village children pretend to have his adventurous nature and skills with the axe, while women dream of his kindness and strength. This is a new tale, one you haven’t heard, the story of where it all began. All Iski wants is prove to the woman he loves that he can be the man she needs him to be. They are offered refuge in a cottage in the woods beyond the boundaries of their cursed village but the old woman is not what she seems. Accepting her help may cost him more than he is willing to give. This is the tale of how the boy became the man. The man that would become the Legend, Iski Flare.
Georgina Makalani survives life as a servant of the public by hiding in cafes at lunch time with dragons, the occasional crazed faery, and a little bit of magic.
Georgina and her daughter live in beautiful southern Tasmania, with two crazy cats and a writing desk that overlooks the water.
The Quickest way to get me to nope out your book is the "siblings in love with each other" trope. Look I get it, they aren't actually siblings, but they where raised to basically be siblings and the book kept referring to them being the "twins" so it just made all their lovey dovey moments cringe and yanked me striaght out of the story.
As for everything outside of that, the story felt like someone pressed fast forward on the VCR (yah I know I'm old) the start had two time jumps you get this prolougish set up with the witch (that had enchantress vibes from beauty and the beast) and then we get like a page and half of Iski and Flare's child hood and this gave you no time to really get to know either Iski or Flare before we where thrown into their weird ass love story. After that I just kept being grossed out by their love story and by 44% I just did not care.
I did skip to the end becuase honestly the synopisis had me so confused about the main characters name Iski Flare, as they are two seperate people in the start of the book, the final page does reveal how that name becomes one name for one guy.
Odd. A short prequel reminiscent of a Hansel & Gretel story that never really explains itself. Maybe it makes more sense if you read the main series first instead of reading this prequel first?
But the distrust of others as reflected in the fire light through the fog of ale makes it difficult to distinguish real from fake, tangible from magic, similar from different, and love from disinterest. Twins have a real definition, but the definition may be distorted by imagination and confusion. Yet the accomplishments of others who act can be far greater than those who plan and the just drink to the plan.
Trust is needed for love to grow. Light and warmth must surround you for nature to do its job of growing crops and food for survival. It takes the reality of life to conquer the shroud of darkness in magic and hate. Action is the best method surviving and helping others.
I was suprised by this book. I love retellings of Fairytales, but this is something else. I was flabergasted in the end, and I even shed a tear ... I'm glad I bought all the books in this series. Loved it.
A sad little tale and how a legend begins, when an old Lady comes to Muteguard looking for a bed and meal after her long travels and is met with hostility and unwelcoming village, after been turned a way she shows her true form, the evil witch Edris Curses the village to live in darkness with their dark hearts, after years of constant snow and darkness, when two children are born at the same time, a prophecy to end a curse, Iski and Flare grow surrounded by whispers of what they will become and end the curse that has plagued the village for generations, that was a very emotional read, a love that can't be broken even by a curse, great characters, it had Hansel and Gretel feel to it but more dark and a sinister twist, highly recommend...😁
I love a good story and this one was so sweet and a little horrific. LOL To children born in the same cursed town, at the same time to neighboring women and referred to as 'The Twins'. When the are older and find themselves in love they feel they have to run to be together. Will the Twins of Legend break the curse? Classic fairytale the I'd highly recommend. There is love but it's strictly PG for the youngsters but juicy enough for us older folks.
This is a quaint fairytale type story with bittersweet overtones. It's reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel with the witch house in the woods, but not brother/sister. Iski and Flare set out to defeat the witch and save the village. It's a short, easy read, as it's a prologue to the rest of the legend of Iski Flare.
I didn't really like fairy tales as a child and I can't say that I'm that keen on then now. This is definitely a fairy tale, a cross between Hansel and Gretel and Baba Yaga. Not for me. I got this in a giveaway
Honestly got this on STYKD because I wanted to boost my number of books read… and ended up crying. It’s an odd story, and definitely leaves you with some questions. But ya girl cried. Justice for Flare.
a fun light read. This is a great introduction to what promises to be a great book series. This book is basically Hanzel and Gretel meets D&D ... more or less.
