Rags and Riches #1

Winter Freeze

Rate this book
When a severe winter storm brings Andy and Darren together, the cold is the farthest thing from their minds. Being homeless, Darren isn't used to anyone caring, especially cops. He's seen the worst in people, and trusting Andy isn't easy.

To Andy, homeless means addictions, overdoses, and panhandling. It's a world he doesn't understand, and isn't sure he wants to. Yet, when it comes to life and death, he can't just walk away and let someone die.

Their worlds couldn't be more different, but the more they get to know each other, they find that, inside, where it matters the most, they really aren't so opposite. Trust comes hard for both men, but when a murderer starts hunting homeless boys, the two work together, showing them that no matter where you come from, dreams really can come true.

Let me just heave a huge put-upon sigh here. Okay? Because as much as I wanted to like this, I couldn't quite get past the overused "Oh, I'm not good enough for him, my life's too fucked up, he deserves better" clichéd bullshit. And you know what? Andy did deserve better than some fucking idiot who wouldn't swallow his pride to accept help from a friend, but was perfectly willing to swallow the jizz of strangers for money!

Darren. Is. A moron. And it's not that I'm against a character being this illogical, but I would really like it if for once, just once, another character would point this shit out to them and make them feel like the idiots they truly are.

*** A vivid description of the plight of the homeless ! ***
E. M. Leya is an amazing writer that hold us in the palm of her hand. These men are so magnetic we want to read every word. 35 yr. old Andy is a narcotics cop. He is well liked, but lonely once he was home alone.

Darren is a 24 yr. old homeless man, who's been on the streets

since his folks kicked him out for admitting he's gay. It's winter, with the biggest, coldest storm closing in. After hours, Darren hides out in the basement parking of the police station. Andy has worked late and finds the man shivering in the corner.

Andy decides to offer gloves and and the next time a warm up in his car. Darren is leery, but agrees, because he's not ready to freeze to death. There is an attraction, as strange as it may seem, but it's in the eyes.

One good deed leads to another and Andy has a house guest for a few days. These complicated men talk, eat, and get to know a bit about each other, while the storm rages. Deeply interesting characters, heartwarming interactions, hot sexiness, and a flowing plot all are present for us to absorb.
This series has recurring characters, but each can stand alone. Violence.
Highly recommended ! ENJOY !!

I couldn't quite get my head round what this book wanted to be - it definitely had the potential to be a great longer book - but it really did need to be longer. It had the potential to be a good thriller - cop trying to find the bad guy preying on the homeless, and it had the potential to be good love story about a cop and a homeless guy.

But... the relationship totally ignored any power relationship between the two, and although there was a mention of guilt and a charity case it was way too glossed over to make the relationship believable.

And it bought the very definition of instalove to a whole new level. It was literally - I gave you my gloves, you swept my path of snow (not a euphemism!) and now I'm in love with you. Way too fast. Way too shallow.

If you're into instalove you'll instalove it, but the blurb talks about them getting to know each other (which is done in two days flat) and learning to trust (which is done overnight) so the story doesn't live up to the expectation set by its description.

It did, however, pay particular attention to the plight of homelessness and there was a sense of despair and bleakness at times that felt authentic, and this is what stopped me from a DNF. If it was extended, went deeper into the relationships and built up the cop story to develop the thread around which the rest could hang, this could have been really great.

This was good but so sad about the homelessness. What Darren had to go through living on the streets is just so sad. I'm glad he found Andy.

1.5 stars rounded up because this book makes some important points about homeless people being invibsible to society.

Other than that - romancy romance with one of my least favourite tropes "I'll-leave-you-for-your-own-good" or "I'll-leave-you-because-I'm-not-worthy-of-your-love" with a pinch of "insta-love-heat-up-and-stir". Added to that was a bit of "I-know-what-is-best-for-you" (which is always kind of stalkery).

I loved Darren. I loved Andy. I loved Darren and Andy together. Yep. Sure did.

Darren broke my heart, but he was so determined. He didn't want to be a statistic and become addicted or a prostitute. He tried so hard to be a good guy on the streets.

Andy was a surprise. I thought it would take a long for me to warm up to him with his views of the homeless, but nope. I loved him since "the coffee".

I'm going to get a little personal here, like I normally do with a subject near and dear to my heart. No, I've never been homeless, but I'm a recovering addict and squatted with the homeless more times than I care to admit. Some were sober but most were addicts, like me. The difference was I had a home to go to. The difference was I didn't have to sell my body to get cash. I went to work. We were the same in many ways though. None of them thought we were good enough for love. I mean, some of those people were kicked out of their homes for one reason or another. Who would love them if their own parents didn't? My reasoning for those thoughts are not something I wish to discuss at this time.

The whole "I'm not good enough" for you angle here worked for me. I've been there. I know that feeling. All too well. I still get that feeling inside me, sometimes and I've been clean for almost 15 years, married for almost 12 and I have 2 kids.

So yeah, Darren and Andy were great. Reason for 4 stars? I wanted more of the "case" and I wanted Andy to do something about .

I'll definitely be reading on!

I really liked this one. This love story was so cute. Darren had been homeless for years and he had no faith in people (after what his family did, it's understandable) and then out of nowhere cames Andy that changes everything. Andy was a good person, he helped Darren expecting nothing in return and then fell for him. It didn't matter that Darren was homeless, he wanted him and he was not going to give that up. It took a bit but Darren finally gave in to his feelings for Andy and thank God he did. They made a very good couple

4.5 SHORT, SWEET AND PERFECTLY FORMED STARS!

If I had started reading this wonderful book at an earlier time I would have read it in one sitting! Unputdownable loveliness, is what I would describe the story, with a little bit of suspense thrown in too. Insta love for a police officer with a whopping good heart. This story will have your faith in human nature restored!

Simplistic romance but not inaccurate description of life in the streets. However, Darren's survival the way he did for 5 years, was almost miraculous.
The kind of book you read to pass the time, but barely remember a couple days later. Not bad though, nor boring.

50% dnf. I quit this book. The MCs especially Darren were annoying and poorly characterized. The dialogue was weak and unrealistic. I don't mind reading some books where I have to suspend reality a bit, but this one was really out there. No way in hell could Darren be homeless for 5 years and remained a goody two shoes. And it's amazing how everyone had nothing but good things to say about him when he went missing, yet not one of them ever offered him help when he was around. Get Fucking real!

First of all, the cover art ruins the picture I would have of the guys... it’s just not good.

The writing just doesn’t do it for me. That was the main reason I couldn’t continue. I’m a a bit picky with my books, and this one was just not it.

Won’t be continuing with the series.

4 Hearts

This was equal parts incredibly sad and overwhelmingly hopeful and sweet. This story focuses greatly on what happens to teens when they’re abandoned by their family after coming out. When I say this story is incredibly sad, I mean just that. But what I really appreciated and found comfort in was how these kids were there for each other. On the streets they formed a family who watched out for each other. And while these kids shouldn’t have to go through that they still tried to make the best out of a hopeless situation.

Darren has been on the streets for years after having been kicked out of the house once he came out to his parents. Things are usually ok. He goes to shelters and sticks close to the other homeless youth in the area.

Andy has spent the majority of his life as a public servant. As a cop, he puts himself in harm’s way to help others frequently. So he doesn’t like to see people suffer unnecessarily.

Seeing a homeless young man who is struggling in the cold fuels the Good Samaritan in Andy. He offers Andy sanctuary from the cold and a warm meal.

What starts as altruistic quickly leads to more as Andy and Darren grow increasingly attracted to each other.

Unfortunately, Darren knows they aren’t equals and he wants more than anything to come to Andy with more than just the clothes on his back.

There are some heavy subplots going on as well. There is a serial killer raping and then murdering homeless boys. Huge family drama/homophobia issues as well as a push/pull relationship scenario.

I enjoyed this story. I think it’s an interesting beginning of a series and I look forward to the others, as well. It’ll be interesting to see where the author goes with this series.

Recommend.

WOW !
Ok, so i'm going to be honest, i had absolutely no idea what to expect when i read this. I'd not read the blurb or anything, i just went on a teaser i saw for this author on facebook, liked the sound of it so bought all 5 books.
I'm so glad i did !!
This story tells us about Darren and Andy and unfortunately, like so many nowadays, tells us why Darren is homeless, and things which some homeless people do just to make sure they can eat.
It's not an easy story to read especially when Darren runs away from Andy thinking his help is nothing more than pity, and other boys start to go missing.
I absolutely was hooked from the start, and to find out that the stories in this series all have some semblance of truth in them makes it that bit harder to read, but not in a bad way. In a way that makes you realise how hard it can be when people come out.
Absolutely FANTASTIC !!

This was a short quick read that I liked. When a severe winter storm brings Andy and Darren together they are both very attracted to each other. They are different as night and day Andy is a narcotics cop and Darren has been homeless for the past five years because parents home when he came out. Andy finds himself inexplicably drawn to a homeless man that he assists one bitterly cold night. He fights it but goes looking for Darren again despite his best judgement. Both of these character's have trust issues. The sex between these two was pretty good. This book was a May-December romance. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

So I want to start off by saying that I hate the cover photo for this story. It is so UGLY! Sorry, I had to get that out of the way.

I did overall enjoy the story. It wasn't an oh my god that was the best thing I've ever read, but it was decent. It held my interest, and even had some good sex in it.

Darren is a homeless boy and Andy is a cop. Andy finds Darren in a parking garage, and things go from there. I enjoy the internal battle Darren had throughout the novel. He didn't feel like he was good enough for Andy. I'm always into that in a book.

This was short and sweet!

A generous 2.5 stars, rounded up since the story gave me a visceral reaction several times.

I almost didn't pick this book up; it's only ~150 pages (TSDR: too short; didn't read?), but it reeled me in with its theme of homelessness. (And, surprisingly, it could have been shorter: I didn't even bother reading the last chapter; it was completely unnecessary and uninteresting.)

Wait! Don't mark this story as "no" quite yet!

This story here is the biggest reason why the LGBTQ arena is where I feel so at home, so understood. To have all you've ever known taken from you, indeed, to have those in your community, your very own parents, those you loved and trusted, reject--and violently so--your very essence when you dared to be courageous and stand up true to yourself... well, that there is a powerful life event that changes the course of your life. And I found it hard to find an equivalent in the world to try and express it to people. Not so after I found the online LGBTQ community.

Winter Freeze believably and compelling shows this experience without drawing it out pedantically or making it self-pitying. The way Darren's mother couldn't (or wouldn't?) stand up for him, and yet he felt no hate--! God! I felt strongly for him, as the homeless, young and rejected MC.

The couple conflict, now there was a bit of silliness: way too much lovey-dovey easy street. And I sure as heck didn't like that Darren was so "noble." The story needed a sensitivity reader: just because you form an addiction doesn't mean you've "given up on yourself" and therefore people can look down on you (as the cop MC, Andy, did to Darren's fellow homeless). Sometimes, that very addiction is a coping mechanism: sometimes people try to SAVE themselves in the only way they know how, a stop-gap measure you could say.

In the end, I didn't trust Andy's love and I wasn't convinced that Darren's trusting behaviour was believable, but I still felt the h/c wobbles. And I sure did like Darren. I will read the next in the series.

Give it a try!

This book, Winter Freeze (Rags and Riches #1) was so different from what I have read so far from E.M.Leya.

I loved this book about Andy, a cop and Darren a homeless young man, living on the streets since he was sixteen. It touched my heart to see how the homeless live on the street, specially the young. This should not be the case, children's place is in their homes with their families. It's so sad to learn that there are so many of them out on the streets.
Why are there so many uncaring parents in this world who throw their children out of the family because they are who they are. It's not the fault of the child after all, its the parents who have given them life. Don't they realize that? They didn't choose to be gay or belonging to the LGBTQ+ wide spectrum.

Three cheers for people like Andy who are there in the real world to take care of the homeless and fight for them.
I can understand why Darren was so insecure and suspicious in accepting help from Andy since he had lived alone on the streets for so long without acceptance or help from people around him.

This was a great heart wrenching story - 5 stars
Looking forward to reading book #2

this is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars .... with a tendency for 4 stars when I just read it and a tendency to 3 stars when I think about it.

I liked it ... it was sweet, they were good together and it was a nice read ... but

for me it is important to get the feeling this could develop in the time which is given to us and sorry, for that they had not enough time together.j
further more I would think that Darren needed a bit more time to get over his feeling worthless (which was part of the reason he left) and I would have liked to see more time for them together to understand Andy better.

nevertheless, a nice read

This was a nice story but it would have been better if the first half hadn’t been so rushed. It would have been better if the feelings between Andy and Darren developed a little more slow. The marriage proposal at the end was also waaaay too soon.
I like the writing style and I’m curious about the other books in this series.

I had to read this series again. It's been a while and I think I missed a couple. They cover some important issues and I'm glad the author took them on. Plus, the characters really grab your heart. It's sad to know that some families don't value and appreciate what they have. Love is love and we should embrace each other.

Enjoyable

An easygoing sweet and sexy read. There are some elements of abuse, which are well handled, and the overall theme is tackled with consideration.
The main characters were both likeable and easy to cheer for.
At times the pacing was a little slow, and a few plot discrepancies were at times frustrating but overall a pleasurable read.

OK

If you enjoy insta, sexy, sweet love, then you'll love this book. After 5 years on the street it looks like Darren's luck may have changed. I quite enjoyed the the first part where the characters meet but as soon as Andy wanted that kiss, knowing Darren's vulnerability, I knew his character would run. They always run... (Sigh)

This a book for the "pretty woman" movie lovers you may be down but not out

Darren held out to survive and keep his soul. A cop Andy know the best & worse of humanity takes a chance not just being kind but listen and getting to know a stranger. Their journey is a sad & beautiful thing. Hoping that there would be more we can do to make the world a better place! MM romance

This was a very sweet quick read. It's a feel good story that sheds some light on some of the struggles that come with being homeless. The timeline is a little too short to really be believable and while the personalities of the characters were okay, there was nothing too extraordinary about them.
