To help keep the novels and the adventure strip collections separate, here's some info about the Modesty Blaise works.

In 1963, O'Donnell began his 38-year run as writer of the Modesty Blaise adventure story strip, which appeared six days a week in English and Scottish newspapers. He retired the strip in 2001.

Each strip story took 18-20 weeks to complete. Several publishers over the years have attempted to collect these stories in large softcovers. Titan Publishing is currently in the process of bringing them all out in large-format softcover, with 2-3 stories in each books. These are called "graphic novels" in the Goodreads title.

Meanwhile, during those 38 years, O'Donnell also wrote 13 books about Modesty Blaise: 11 novels and 2 short story/novella collections. These stories are not related to the strip stories; they are not novelizations of strip stories. They are entirely new, though the characters and "lives" are the same. These have been labeled "series #0".

'The Special Orders' is perhaps the last great Modesty adventure - though there were several more very very good ones to come.

C'est toujours un bonheur pour moi de lire les BD de Modesty Blaise. Comme j'attends longtemps entre chacunes et qu'il me reste peu à lire (deux tomes restent à publier), je les relis et j'ai encore du plaisir. Elle a été une héroïne très importante de mon parcours. Je l'ai d'abord découvert en roman et j'adore Modesty: elle assume ses peurs, mais elle fonce; elle a confiance en ses capacités, mais ne se croit pas invincible; elle est forte, mais jamais insensible; elle est efficace, mais jamais froide comme un robot (ce que je reproche parfois à James Bond). Et j'adore le fait qu'elle forme une équipe du tonnerre avec Willie, qui n'est pas un simple "sidekick", mais un véritable partenaire à cette aventure. La BD permet aux gars de se rincer l'oeil sur les courbes de Modesty, dévoilées occasionnellement , mais les filles auront aussi d'excellentes raisons de regarder Willie. ;)

Bref, si vous n'avez jamais lu de Modesty Blaise, je vous y encourage. Il y a de l'humour, des personnages récurrents, de l'émotion, des mouvements de combats plausibles, un peu de fantastique, des voyages partout dans le monde et des personnages attachants.

Cette BD est l'un des derniers tomes. Elle contient 4 histoires avec des personnages récurrents. Peut-être débuter par une BD un peu plus ancienne... Mais bon, ça fonctionne aussi de débuter avec celle-ci.

Human trafficking aka slave-trading in Thailand. Excellent Modesty-Willie adventures, the lot of them. When are they not?
