Carolyn Keene

Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

Nancy and her best friends George and Bess are heading to a wedding. Bess is one of the Bridesmaids and they are all very excited to attend a wedding and get away for the weekend. All the guests are staying at the historical Grey Fox Inn. George read online that there have been ghost sightings at the Grey Fox Inn in the past and she is hoping for one now. Nancy doesn't believe in it until she sees someone in her room which was locked and stays locked throughout.

Meanwhile, someone is actually trying to sabotage the wedding and Nancy knows that there's a mystery afoot and her sleuthing skills are needed to save the wedding as well as solve the mystery of the ghost of the Grey Fox Inn.

It's no secret that I love Nancy Drew and her mysteries. I am reading through this series at random and it hasn't affected my reading experience at all. I have been really enjoying these mysteries. Even though I already predicted everything in this mystery, I still loved reading this to the end. I especially love the friendship between Nancy, George and Bess.

Finished this last night before going to bed.
This ND book was such an amazing read! Even though there were some slow parts near the beginning, it was still amazing! :)
This author did a good job of capturing Nancy's character right! Also, I love the beautiful cover art of this Nancy Drew Diaries.
The best Nancy Drew Diaries I've ever read so far! Another great one in this series is The Clue at Black Creek Farm (Nancy Drew Diaries, #9) by Carolyn Keene .
The whole time I was reading this Nancy Drew book, I've been thinking of rating it 4 stars but I had the urge to rate it 5. Such an amazing read! I would recommend it to all the Nancy Drew fans out there. :)

***Update Review***

This installment in the Nancy Drew Diaries series, The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn, follows Nancy and her friends as they investigate the strange happenings that has been going on at the inn - who's been playing ghost and sneaking into the rooms at night despite the doors being locked tight and the windows secured -, and find out who's been trying to sabotage Charlotte's wedding.
The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn is a book that intrigued me until the end, as I wondered who was so envious towards the bride or groom that they would go length to ruin the wedding. Who would go out of their way to do such a cruel thing to ruin someone's important day?
I loved how in-character Nancy was written - a determined, brave Nancy willing to do the right thing despite the dangers involved. Also, the intelligent Nancy who was smart enough to know that there were logical explanations for all these "ghostly" incidents.

I was a big Nancy Drew fan and thought I'd read a newer one from the "Diaries" series. Not knowing what to expect, I rather enjoyed the mystery and thought the writers kept it pretty true to the original as far as Nancy, Bess and George and their personalities. The plot was also something that could have been read in the original books. It's probably the best they could do with a modern take on Nancy Drew and her friends sleuthing and solving mysteries. #girlpower

I enjoyed how cool the house/ inn was. I guessed how the person/people were getting around within the inn, and I was right. That's so cool! The story was also mostly believable, especially the relationships that were displayed/explained. It was cute with some drama at the end, of course. Weddings, small town, and mystery made for an interesting adventure.

Keene, Carolyn The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn (Nancy Drew Diaries #13),169 pages. Aladdin, 2016. $6.99. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG.

The latest in this Nancy Drew reboot has the girl detective traveling to an out of town wedding with her best friends, George and Bess. From the start, the wedding seems to be cursed with ghosts, threats, and missing rings. Nancy vows to get to the bottom of this mystery before the wedding is called off.

I was a big fan of the original Nancy Drew books as a kid, so I was interested to see how these "Diaries" held up. The material has been updated for the 21st century but the basic "Nancy solves a mystery" is the same with a variety of suspects being introduced and Nancy getting into a tight spot (thus the PG violence rating) at the very end as she solves the mystery. The only difficulty I had with the book was reading a book that is written so clearly for a middle level audience with a 20-something heroine. It was weird and also did not mesh with the cover super well. All in all, for any younger readers who want a light mystery, these can still be your go-to.

Nancy Drew, along with her best friends Bess and George, travel to Charleston to attend the wedding of one of Bess’ cousins. Their stay at the Grey Fox Inn engages them in solving the mystery of why a Civil War ghost is haunting the inn as well as figuring out who is using increasingly harmful pranks to disrupt the wedding they are attending. Though the classic sleuthing stories have been modernized with references to technology such as smart phones and the internet, the essence remains true to the original. This is the thirteenth book in the revamped series, but readers can easily jump in without having read the previous ones.

Favorite of the Nancy Drew Diaries! The book and the cover! The cover is a great clue to the fun and cool mystery! I had a lot of fun exploring The Grey Fox Inn and meeting new characters like the bride and groom, Charlotte and Parker. Fun writing style and intriguing! I’ve been hot and cold with the current Nancy Drew Diaries series. Some books are great, some are just okay. Sometimes Nancy’s behavior has me scratching my head, other times she acts like the Nancy Drew I grew up with. The question is, for The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn, which Nancy Drew was going to show up?

“Nancy and her friends find themselves at a haunted inn with a mystery to solve in this thirteenth book of the Nancy Drew Diaries, a fresh approach to the classic mystery series.

When Nancy and Bess accompany George to a cousin’s wedding in historic Charleston, South Carolina, they end up staying at an old inn near the family’s home with the rest of the guests. But when they begin hearing strange noises and witnessing unexplained phenomena at night—they soon discover that it’s one of Charleston’s most haunted hotels! When the wedding rings disappear during one of these spooky evenings, Nancy knows she’s got to get to the bottom of this ghostly mystery…before there isn’t a happily ever after.”

I just have once again comment on the cover art for the Diaries books. The artist makes Nancy look a lot younger than her supposed 18-years. She looks like a 14-year old trying on her older sister’s clothes, but weirdly enough, she’s got Mary Janes on her feet. I can’t remember the last time I saw Mary Janes on anyone but my oldest daughter who went to a private school, and the last time she wore then she was about ten. But saying that, this is one of the better covers the artist has done. It definitely gives off a spooky vibe despite the way Nancy is drawn.

In this volume, Nancy, Bess and George are headed to South Carolina for a wedding of a cousin of Bess (the other side of the family from Bess and George’s connection). They’re staying at The Grey Fox Inn, which is reportedly haunted by a Civil War soldier. Bess’ cousin Charlotte is marrying a local celebrity, a news anchor named Parker who comes from a very well-to-do family. His family doesn’t seem to think that the bookish, shy Charlotte is worthy enough to marry their son, and have called a lot of the shots of the wedding, which doesn’t make Charlotte’s parents all that happy since they’re doing the traditional thing and paying for most of the wedding.

Strange things start happening, like the ghostly appearances in several guests rooms, including Nancy’s, and stuff starts going wrong with the wedding prep. You guessed it–sabotage. I am so tired of Nancy having to investigate sabotage, because that’s the basic plot of almost all the books in this series. Seriously, can’t Nancy investigate something else, like a missing treasure, a lost will, or a missing relative that needs to be found? Sure, Nancy does get to investigate the old inn and finds a secret passageway, but otherwise she’s trying to track down who is sabotaging Charlotte and Parker’s wedding.

As in most of the other Diaries books, Nancy’s prime suspects for most of the book turn out to be wrong until a vital clue is revealed at the end. This time Nancy does figure out who the bad guy is, as opposed to many of the books, where she’s clueless until the person reveals themselves to be the culprit.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m busting on the Nancy Drew Diaries series all the time. There’s some things to like about the newer series, including bringing Nancy into the 21st century with cell phones and wifi connections. Nancy has always enjoyed relative freedom from adult supervision, and that continues with this series. It must give the girls who read these books the chance to look forward to when they’re older, and this book doesn’t have Nancy filled with self-doubt like she is in some other volumes. I’d rate The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn as one of the better Nancy Drew Diaries. But enough with the sabotage!

Over the last week I have had extra time to squeeze in a few Nancy Drew mysteries on top of my regularly scheduled reading. I had made a promise to myself at the beginning of the year to not read as much middle grade material as I’m focusing on either books that I have wanted to read for a long time or books written by authors considered masters of their craft. Who am I kidding? It is summer and I could spend days only reading Nancy Drew (and Baby Sitters Club and Harry Potter etc) because I am a kid at heart. I can also argue that the Carolyn Keene consortium is a master of their given genre because Nancy Drew has been around for nearly one hundred years. To ensure for this long, obviously the writers behind her have to have been doing something right. If generations of women are still reading and enjoying stories about America’s favorite amateur sleuth, then maybe Nancy Drew is part of the upper echelon of writing after all.

It is the height of summer, and there is nothing like a good ghost story. Nancy, Bess, and George are headed to a wedding of one of Bess’ cousins in Charleston, South Carolina, America’s most haunted city. George read up on Charleston on the plane ride and notes that the city has more ghosts than any other city in America. Having read another ghost themed story set in Charleston less than a year ago, I can attest to that as well. If the city is full of ghosts and spooky sightings, and the wedding party is staying at an inn over two hundred years old, then something is bound to happen. While Nancy hopes to not have to be on duty during a summer getaway, inevitably trouble finds her. In this case, the trouble is in the form of a “ghost” that is haunting the bride to be and other guests at the Grey Fox Inn, hoping to sabotage the wedding. If Nancy doesn’t solve this latest mystery, then there might not be a wedding after all.

Even though the modern Nancy Drew Diaries series is written with a tween audience in mind, I do appreciate the setting and characterizations given in each case. Rather than Bess and George being bystanders in the original series, the three friends solve mysteries together. George is a tech geek, Bess uses her charm to interview even the peskiest of witnesses, and Nancy uses her sleuthing sense to deduce what happens in most cases. As for the setting, the consortium team gives a write up about the location, including some history and key landmarks. Even if kids think that they are just reading for fun, they learn some history in the process. Of course, some of the older teens, ahem, and adults, are reading to see if Nancy and Ned will ever be the ones getting married. George hints at it here when Nancy stands in for the bride at the rehearsal dinner as part of a southern tradition. One day, maybe on the hundredth anniversary of Nancy Drew, maybe. In the meantime, Nancy has a case to solve.

I do enjoy magical realism and South Carolina seems to be home to its share of magical occurrences in every day life. There is also southern charm and this wedding seems to be full of it. Of course, Nancy along with Bess and George figures out who was out to ruin the wedding and it goes off without a hitch. As this is a middle grade book after all, I read it in a little over an hour. All of the cases in this series have positive endings and are the same light reading. I have read about half of them and will continue to do so in between my other books. Nancy Drew might not win literary awards, but she teaches about friendship, teamwork, and deduction skills, values that will never go out of style as America’s favorite sleuth nears that hundredth anniversary.

carte The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn Nancy Drew Diaries 13 Carolyn Keene

Now, that I call some awesome adventures!!

carte The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn Nancy Drew Diaries 13 Carolyn Keene

Citate:

"With a startled cry, I leaped out of bed and tried to get a better look at the intruder. With only the moonlight streaming from the window, it was hard to amke out any details—but just as Charlotte had said, it appeared that the figure was dressed in some sort of uniform. Both jacket and pants were of a single color—blue, perhaps?—and the coat's metal buttons flashed in the dim light.
«Don't come any closer,» I warned, trying to keep my voice from shaking. I scanned the room for something I could use as a weapon and landed on a heavy-looking crystal vase on the nightstand by my side. I grabbed it by the neck and whirled back around to face the intruder—
But he was gone." (p.36-37)

"«I'm going to help the rest of the bridal party collect the centerpieces and other things from the tables first,» Parker said. «How about you, Nancy?»
«Well, I was planning on staying behind and ive you a hand with all this,» I replied.
«That's so nice of you,» Parker said gratefully. «Well then, we'll just grab a ride with someone after we're done, okay?»
I nodded. Piper and Morgan said their good-byes and followed the rest of the crowd out of the restaurant. I glanced outside, where a crescent moon had risen over the river, and I could see the winking lights of sailboats bobbing along on their way back to shore. If only the evening inside this room were as peaceful as the scene outside its windows." (p.89)

"After ten minutes of searching, George decided to take a break. «Ugh!» she exclaimed, letting her head fall back against the wooden paneled wall with a thump. «Another dead end!»
I froze in place. «George,» I said slowly. «Do that again.»
George looked aat me curiously. «Do what again?»
«Thump your head against the wall.»
She blinked. «You've got to be kidding.»
«Nope, totally serious.»
George shrugged and thumped her head against the wall. It was just as I'd thought.
«What is it, Nancy?» Bess asked." (p.96-97)

The Ghost of Gray Fox Inn by Carolyn Keene
Series: Yes Nancy Drew Diaries #13
Format: Audiobook
Stars 3 1/2
Recommend: Yes
Would Reread: Maybe

I'm not a huge modern Nancy Drew fan. I've read two books in the Girl Detective Series and hated both of them.
I read book #1 and #2 in the Diaries a few years ago when they first came out and didn't like them either. I thought they felt like Girl Detective books re branded Diaries so I gave up on the series and went back to reading the original series in OT and RT.

I was out of audiobooks and waiting for my holds to come in and ran across this one and thought I would give it another try. It was only three and a half hours and I was bored.

I was really surprised how much I enjoy this book.
It was so much better then the first two books. It had a simple but interesting story and the
characters where done well.

My library has the rest of the Diaries series on audiobooks and I look forward to reading the rest of them over the summer.
And if the rest are as good as this one I might have to start adding Diaries to my collection.

The only reason it didn't get four stars is because George is not short for Georgia. *rolls eyes*

It was a lot of fun to LISTEN to a Nancy Drew mystery -- and a modernized one at that. Since the books I read as a kid talked of Nancy wearing a frock, driving a roadster, and having a "special friend" named Ned (they were my mom's -- I'm not THAT old), this new version had me surprised by a lot of things: a young unmarried couple share a hotel room, there is drinking of alcohol, Nancy & friends seem to be young 20s (?), Bess is a bit of a sex pot, and someone says "Oh my god." You've come a long way, Nancy Drew. I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator's accent for Nancy (what was that exactly?); however, she did an excellent job with the southern men's and women's accents. I am confused by the intended audience, though. Isn't this supposed to be middle grade? Whatever it is, it worked well as middle AGED woman's flashback to her favorite sleuth. This was an overall enjoyable read. This is my first experience reading anything remotely related to Nancy Drew. I thought it was a fun and quick read. One problem I had with this book is that it is obviously a middle grade and written like one, but the characters are teenagers. Nancy can drive a car, so I assume she's probably around 16 years old. The high school aged characters acted more like middle school characters. If the characters had been aged down a bit, to around maybe 12 or 13, it may have worked better with the story. Overall, I don't think this was anything special, but it was still enjoyable and fun to read.

Nancy, Bess, and George are headed to Charleston for a wedding at the old Grey Fox Inn.
At this beautiful historic setting, Nancy and friends are aware of strange occurrences at the inn from ghostly sightings to spooky noises. Nancy is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery with the help of her two best friends. And, then, the mystery becomes more serious when the wedding rings disappear. With a long list of suspects and danger a foot, Nancy has to solve the mystery before the bride cancels the wedding due to the unusual events.
Overall, not a bad Nancy Drew, I definitely would recommend to fans of Nancy.

I have to admit this was one the better books in the series. The idea wasn't too original but the fact that there were multiple culprits within this mystery was pretty original if I had to say so myself. I also really like the use of a mystery within a wedding an not only that it has to do with ghosts. I like that it wasn't too creepy compared to the last Nancy drew diaries that I read which was pretty spine chilling. If you would like to know more about what I thought about that book you can go to my profile and view my review on it. Anyway I think this has to be my favorite so far!

I thought delving into Nancy Drew Diaries might give Nancy a bit of an updated twist, but sadly not. Lots of pointless chatter between Nancy and her two girlfriends, painful stereotypes of women fainting and crying at the drop of a hat, men saving the day. It's the same as classic Nancy, only these don't have the excuse of being from a different era (this one was written in 2016). Plus, the girl on the cover looks maximum 10-years-old. But I finished this in a day and it knocks off another book on my challenge list.

I was really distracted while listening to this in the car, but it was cute. Nothing like a Nancy Drew mystery to let my brain rest. The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn focuses on Nancy and her besties attending wedding in the South when things start going awry. The ghost wasn't a key factor in the case and I'm surprised it was used in the title. I personally struggle with juggling all the characters in an audiobook. It certainly didn't help matters when there were characters named Parker and Tucker in the same book. How do you expect my name to stay on straight with such similarly named men? I wasn't too invested in this book and it stacked so many red herrings near the end that I was blasted with needless reveals. The next book takes place on a riverboat and I'm excited that it harkens back to the first book that was set on a cruise. Near and far, Nancy Drew's always on the case, no matter the location!

Carolyn Keene's The Ghost of Grey Fox Inn (Nancy Drew Diaries, #13) finds the young sleuth in the midst of a wedding at a haunted wedding venue. Add jealousy on a number of levels and stolen items and this may be Nancy's most complex case yet. Some of the wedding traditions and myths in this updated version should have been either eliminated or just vaguely mentioned. Nevertheless this is a quick read for young adults who happen to enjoy timeless reads.

My first Nancy Drew book. I've been playing Nancy Drew PC games for quite a while now, but I never get to read the book. Now that I have, I find all of the things that made me fell in love with the game in the first place. Light, sometimes funny, but always has serious sleuthing going on. This makes for a very enjoyable reading.

This has been my favorite so far. It helped that the groom in the mystery has the same name as my son and he is marrying a smart, sweet girl. It had mystery, ghosts, suspects that kept me guessing, two mysteries Nancy solves, a great villain that kept me guessing and bust of all, a romantic couple. I am so much like Bess!

Reading this book finally jumpstarted my passion to read again (after reading many adult novels with a lot of adult problems). It was very refreshing and I nearly didn't put it down, trying to figure out the culprit and all. I also really love Nancy Drew's character. Moreover, her lines are a source of new vocabularies for me! Thank you, Carolyn Keene..

Pushing through this book was difficult. The Southern characters were gratingly stereotypical, and I wasn't too interested overall in the plot (maybe wedding disasters aren't my cup of tea, though), however the book did end solidly with a surprising culprit, and had intriguingly complex answers to the mystery. Probably not something I'd reread, though.
