Tony Conte is the emergency department's nursing manager at Sawgrass Medical Center in South Florida. A former Special Forces medic and martial arts expert, he doesn't seem a likely target for attack in the hospital parking lot. Yet, after the attack, he wakes up on a stretcher and the hospital's CFO, whom he was walking to her car, is dead. Tony becomes a person of interest in the investigation into her murder. When Tony finds that someone has been embezzling money from the hospital, his questions anger the management and bring him unwanted attention from criminals. Having law officers and thugs after him, he must call on all of his talents to keep his job, and, perhaps, his life. In Tony Conte, Gregg E. Brickman has created an admirable, smart, sharp, and sympathetic protagonist. A widower with three children, Tony faces huge demands on his time from home life and his career, without the added burdens of recovering from serious injury and solving a murder. He handles it all in a most believable fashion, bringing his combined brains and brawn to the task. I particularly enjoyed the verisimilitude that Brickman brings to the several settings in which Tony functions. His family life at home with his Italian mother and the children seems very real to me. The hospital scenes reflect the author's many years as in the nursing profession. The romance which develops between Tony and Laurie, a nurse on staff, is charming and adds another dimension to the protagonist and this thoroughly enjoyable and suspenseful mystery. Highly recommended.
