Awesome, totally beyond the scope of anything I have read in the field of Philosophy and Metaphysics. I was humbled at times due to the sheer brillance of Ibn Sina's concepts and the ways in which he explained them. Makes your ponder the universe, reality, and humanities place in it all. I can see why Imam Ghazali reacted to it in a negative way, and why it took Ibn Rushd to defend its right to be understood and respected in the annals of Islamic theology/philosophy.

Ibn Sina (or as known in Latin, Avicenna) was a polymath’s polymath. The man excelled in every single field he touched and became hugely influential in every field he wrote on. This here is his major treatise on philosophy and science, The Book of Healing. He covered many major topics in it, natural sciences, mathematics, logic… till eventually we get to this final chapter of it (which can also be read on its own): A science of the “self/soul”. In this book, Ibn Sina uses his knowledge and experience as a medical doctor to treat the three types of selves, the animal, the plant, and above all, the human. He dissects the soul in all of its material and immaterial properties from sensation to perception to awareness. Yet what makes this work even more remarkable is how this is a predecessor to modern psychology. The aim of the Book of Healing is to understand the self with all of its particularities in order to heal it of any possible ailments. He covers many wide range of topics related to the inner self such as emotional reactions, affects, phobias, and he aimed to see how the material body interacts with the immaterial self. Furthermore, his brilliance lead him to propose different experimental treatments for his time, such as “induced imagination”, which is a precursor to hypnotherapy. While the ailments of the physical body are not identical to those of the self, the method that he applies in treating them shows a deep insight that attests to his brilliance. His work forms a major bridge between the classic Greek philosophers, especially Aristotle and Plato, and the Golden Age of Islamic Philosophy. While his style of writing might not be that accessible to the common reader, to anyone interested in the history of philosophy and the historical development of psychology, this book is a must have.
