I first read this in high school after I met Betty Bayé as part of a scholarship thing I did, and pulled it out for a re-read tonight, and I’m so glad I did! It’s a quick read, a collection of essays (columns) addressing many aspects of life, politics, current events, and race in the late 80s/early 90s.

The articles in this collection educate, encourage, support, and praise those trying to take control of their lives and families. The essay format may be more appealing to adults. Still, the content should not be overlooked for its value in opening discussions with teens.
