The End of Time: A Fabulous Narrative - Volume I: From Waterloo to Meridian

Rate this book
In this rather silly time travel adventure, Dhlara and Jylling are two ordinary young people living in the modern day, until the Duke of Wellington, a 19th century British general with a fondness for shouting, steps into their lives. He transports (or abducts, depending on who you ask) them to the Ministries of Time, a secret group of organizations that exist at the edge of time which have control over absolutely everything that has ever happened. There, he gives them grave news: Napoleon Bonaparte has gone and ruined a perfectly good history of the world by traveling back in time with a monstrously huge squid that can walk on land. Through utilizing such a dastardly stratagem, Napoleon has won the Battle of Waterloo, and is building upon that victory to rule the entire world. Dhlara and Jylling, says the Duke of Wellington, must stop Napoleon to save all of history and time itself! But soon they meet Melvin the "previously embodied head," as he prefers to call himself, and they discover that things will only get even more strange.

A scintillating time-travel idea leads to a lump-in-throat action-packed captivating tale - that didn’t fly with me. The epic battle between Duke of Wellington and Napoleon is used to correct history, destroy cities and change the future. At the helm are Jylling and Dhlara, literally handpicked by the Duke to do the deed. They immediately are thrust in 1815 in an unknown village ravaged with blood of battle where a giant squid is the villain’s main weapon. They don’t understand it, return and decide to go to circa 810 ‘because people there would have food and no weapons’ (!) They are joined by Hasdrubal and go look for sausage and critters (to eat) but first Hasdrubal tells them that he is there so that the French race is eradicated before being born to prevent squid-Waterloo from happening! And as Jylling and Dhlara find out, Napoleon is not even the main villain!

Creager has a brilliant idea on his hands, great banter between characters and visceral action but the direction and landscape of the story didn’t make sense to me, nor did I enjoy it.

I received a free pdf of the book in exchange for a fair, unbiased and non-reciprocal review.

The End of Time: a Fabulous Narrative is a very strange tale of time travel. Two apparantly random bar dwellers, Jylling and Dhlara are shanghaied into service for the Ministry of Order, a fictive organisation handling history, and making sure that nothing is out of order. Unfortunately, Napoleon has changed history by winning the battle of Waterloo, and using giant squids as part of his army. Jylling and Dhlara must stop this, and travel back and forth in time to stop the evil Napoleon.

This is a book with an absurd plot, and with lots of humour. I liked it, due to its completely original plot, funny scenes, and well developed characters. The book is very well written. I wonder where the author got the idea for the plot from, sometimes it reads as something coming out of a dream. In any case, it will be interesting to discover where this tale ends up.

This was a really fun book! Some great humor, and an interesting trip across time. The author was very clever in getting across how to pronounce one of the main character’s names. Melvin is probably my favorite character. With pirates, giant squid, history and time travel, it was quite the ride! Great writing with few errors. I look forward to reading more!

This novel is about two people who are snatched from their own place and time and instructed by the madman who abducted them that they must ensure Napoleon doesn’t win the Battle of Waterloo by using a giant squid. Along the way our two main characters spend a lot of time on ships and occasionally bickering.

I find it hard to say much more. Characterisation is sparse. We are given no background to our time travellers, and no indication that they worry about any friends or family they may have left behind. Dialogue veers from mock Shakespearian to contemporary, and the episodic plot doesn’t seem to follow any logic. There is no development or change in the characters, nor do they ever reflect upon their experiences.

There are also many inconsistences. The time travellers are told that they have been given the ability to understand any language. But then people are being described as having ‘a French accent.’ There is a ship which can plunge into water. The first time no one prepares in advance for a plunge, and all emerge safely still on the deck. The second time, everyone is told to grab onto something and hold on. We are also told that the water is actually time, and to fall in is dangerous, yet at one point sailors leap off the ship into the water with no ill effects. And never mind the couple of days when the main characters are held captive, the door only opened to give them food and water. I couldn’t help but wonder if they simply held their bladders for all that time or perhaps they had special digestive powers.

When characters yell we have FULL CAPS as well as exclamation marks. Nor can I really work out what the Ministry of Order or Ministry of Chaos (never mind the rest of them) were all about.

The novel doesn’t have a real conclusion, just a pause to lead into what I assume will be a sequel. The writer certainly has imagination, but I hope that he will take more time to develop the characters and the plot for the next installment.

Deliciously strange!

Filled with humor and a very light-hearted plot, it is also a time travel adventure. Some parts are indeed silly and I didn't quite follow all of the "historical" scenes, but it was an adorably humorous story. The characters were well-rounded and had a great chemistry, especially with the dialog and banter between them. The story could have used a few more details and maybe a credible back story, but it was what it promised to be "a rather silly time travel adventure."
