Getting accidentally locked out of his hotel room on Valentine’s Day night is embarrassing enough for teacher Martin Cooper, but the fact he’s stark naked makes it even worse. It doesn’t help that the one person he runs into is Rod, the gorgeous man he’d been checking out earlier in the hotel pool. But when Rod offers Martin a refuge, the night heats up. Now if only Martin could get the hang of this seduction business…

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. She blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She's beginning to suspect he enjoys it.

Note to readers: I don't read reviews of my stories on here anymore, as I think they're geared for other readers, not the writers (plus I'm chicken and would rather stick my fingers in my ears going "la-la-la"). If you'd like to let me know what you thought about any of my stories, please PM me or send me an email. I'd be very happy to hear from you :)
I'm not a fan of the cover, but I enjoyed this light, amusing, sexy story about a primary school teacher caught in the buff by the man of his recent lust-filled fantasies.
Martin's a bit of a geek, so he reinvents himself as a travel writer, since that's clearly more glamorous. But then he feels guilty and leaves Rod (and his rod) behind.
Features a toe-sucking kink, which was just funny (because toes aren't sexy, not even a little bit).
Very cute story, steamier than I expected; the HEA was a nice bonus.
I am a huge fan of Josephine Myles's writing, so when I saw the blurb for 'Locked Out' I knew I had to read this. I couldn't imagine anything funnier than accidentally being stuck naked in a five-star resort hallway with bright lights and no way to get back inside. In fact, I could visualize it, and I couldn't stop giggling.
Martin has accompanied his sister, Michelle, on her Valentine's spa resort package because her terrible boyfriend just dumped her. Martin is a shy primary school teacher with rotten luck when it comes to finding men. I think the shy portion really doesn't help, nor does his lack of confidence. When he meets Rod - hot Speedo wearing guy - in the hallway when he's naked, Martin is at a complete loss as to how to proceed. Luckily, he manages to work up the courage to have his very first one-night stand.
It's too bad Martin decides to manufacture a career that's more exciting, in his mind, than his own. Martin's lie comes back to bite him in the butt, though, when he takes his class to their swim lesson at the local youth center, only to discover the new teacher is none other than Rod. There's some explaining to be done, and a whole lot of makeup sex.
An absolutely adorable, cute, charming, and funny story. I loved it as much as when I first read it as part of the ‘Brit Boys: On Boys’ anthology. Thank you, Jo!
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews
This is a very British book. The author writes in her native language, and it's not American English. Which is awesome, if you're like me. Because I love that kind of thing.
The tone of the novel is also very British - understated in some parts, putting its characters in some awkward situations in others, and unapologetic for its use of strong British language in all.
But toe-sucking, OMG. I don't get that. I myself am super ticklish, and cannot for the life of me imagine wanting anyone to suck my toes, nor would I want to put my mouth on anyone else's. Maybe blow raspberries on my kids' toes when they were babies, but popping those things into my mouth to suck on - just... no. No. NOPE. And keep my husband's feet far from my face, thanks.
Far be it from me to yuck your yum, though, if that's your thing. Suck 'em all you want, okay?
Slightly nerdy and bookish teacher Martin is spending Valentine's Day weekend with his sister, of all people, in a charming little Lover's Hotel because his sister's cheating ex was supposed to be there with her, but since ex cheated, it falls to Martin to cheer her up and accompany her, while bemoaning his single status and his lack of prospects to enhance his dismal love life. Surely no man will want him, the bookish, nerdy, too boring Elementary school teacher, especially not the hot guy in the tight Speedos who's parting the waters of the hotel pool with his muscular arms and thighs, and has Martin drooling secretly over his package, showcased so nicely by said Speedos. But one-night stands aren't really Martin's thing, and he knows he's more safely off just watching hot guy from afar.
After getting pedicures and looking perhaps too deeply into their cups, Michelle (the sister) and Martin are fast asleep in their room, when nature calls Martin to use the facilities. And since he's still a bit drunk on the bubbly and sleep, and for some reason stark naked (starkers, as Jo calls it), he confuses the bathroom door with the main door to the room and finds himself suddenly in the light of the hotel's hallway and the room door firmly shut. Whoops.
Bugger, bollocks, what's a guy to do? While pondering his predicament, padding down the hallway in search of the janitor's closet, hot Speedo guy comes around the corner, and after some giggles, rescues Martin from his nakedness by offering him some clothes to get himself down to registration for a new key card.
And then Martin... well, you read it and find out.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a very British book, and I loved that. It's also too damn short, but it did what it tried to do just fine - showcase how Martin and Rod meet (something they'll not want to tell their grandkids, maybe), and allows them to make a connection and a real relationship out of a one-night stand.
Perfect for a lunch hour read, with hot sexy guy and nerdy sexy guy getting it on, and awkwardness galore, and giggles throughout. You should definitely read it!
** I received a free copy of this book from its author. A positive review was not promised in return. **
This short little gem has just the right balance of adorable, heat and angst to make for a perfect afternoon escape read. Martin accompanies his newly single sister to a Valentine resort getaway she had already bought and paid for before she got dumped, so Martin is along to keep her company and be a good drinking partner and listener. The two of them read as siblings from start to finish. Snark with a side of love so they were really good together and their banter gave me a good idea of Martin’s character in a short period of time.
Martin does not lead an exciting life. He’s a teacher in a quiet little town with a history of a couple of boyfriends, and not a single one-night stand. As he says, it was “Just another way in which I failed at being a gay stud”. After engaging in a little eye fucking with a delicious man in a Speedo by the pool, Martin resigns himself to a solo weekend with his sis and a continued lack of one night stand love. Circumstances being adorable, Martin manages to lock himself out of his room nekkid in the middle of the night. His sister is caught in a serious sleep buzz so she doesn’t hear him knocking. Sooooo, who comes walking down the hall? Delicious Speedo Man!
One thing leads to another and Martin finally gets his one night stand. Thing is, it was more than what he had hoped for, he honestly felt a connection to Rod (Delicious Speedo Man). Problem is, he gave Rod a bit of false info as to who he was and what he did for a living. The bit of misinformation was enough to keep Martin locked up in his lie, because for every moment he let it go on, it became too difficult to come clean. He also was pretty unclear as to how one night stands worked and listened to his sister instead of his own brain. Not that she was necessarily off the mark, she advised him to make himself more interesting, live vicariously through his new persona, because, why the hell not? That fits her personality, not his, so it’s no wonder the whole thing backfired on Martin like it did.
Fast forward to real life and Martin is back at work and still has regret about not being able to pursue the connection with Rod. Instead he snuck out before morning and hasn’t seen Rod since. This is a sweet RomCom of a story though, so the two do meet again under real life circumstances and it was a little awkward but Rod is a good guy and some honest communication moved the story along in an angst-free way.
The author did a really good job of building both Martin and Rod for a shorter story. There was enough backstory and personality shown without just being told making it easy to get to know both of them. Plus, the chemistry they shared was damn hawt, the connection between them was obviously more than one night stand level heat so it really made me want an HEA for them. I was right there with Martin, I felt his regret as well as his nervousness and excitement when they met up again. And finally, I absolutely loved the role that Martin played in the bedroom with Rod. His sister told him to live it up outside of his ‘boring’ routine, I think Martin just needed to find the right partner to make that be a thing for him.
**a copy of this story was provided for an honest review**
Martin is helping his sister through a sad and lonely Valentine’s Day by going to the spa and getting drunk. She gives him some “advice” on dating – specifically about having a hot and heavy one night stand since he’s never had one. When Martin ends up drunk and in the hall of the spa/hotel naked with the hot man he’d been lusting after earlier, he uses her advice to “snag him”. Unfortunately, that advice entails making up a character to hide behind so he can be brave. Sadly, he can’t keep up the façade and must let dream-guy go the next morning.
Rod is an ex-professional athlete turned swim teacher who stumbles into Martin’s life not once but twice. Will he be willing to forget Martin’s dishonesty?

This is a super-easy, laid back, fun, and sexy read. It’s heavy on the sex, good with the feels and short on the angst.
The author manages to give us a fully developed story with fleshed out characters in a very short story.
Highly recommended for a quick read and a big smile.
You know when you are reading about two characters sitting in a hot tub, admiring their pedicures, and you think this seems awfully familiar. Then a hot dude in a speedo walks up to the pool and you’re now thinking definitely ringing some mighty fine bells. And then your MC finds himself drunkenly ejecting himself from his own hotel room, sans clothes, towels, or even an itty-bitty hand cloth and you are positive that you’ve done this all before?
All that and a bag of chips (salt and vinegar if you got ’em!).
So it turns out that I’ve read this before. If you haven’t already guessed that. I’ve even reviewed it for the blog when it was part of the Brit Boys: On Boys anthology. Granted it took a man nakedly stumbling ’round a hotel floor for me to remember, but I did finally catch on! And since the review I wrote before was rather short (as most antho reviews tend to be with me) here is the new and improved version. With bonus wordiness!
While travel-writer would not be my go-to for an alternate (seducing) personality, I have to admit that I like how Martin was able to act his way into a most deliciously toppy one-night-stand. Maybe he needed to be someone else for a bit, maybe he just needed to stop focusing on the inconsequential shit for a bit, but when Martin decides to let it all fly it does fly far and hard. It also gets its toes sucked almost to the point of nuclear explosion. Which, not a kink of mine, but one well written enough that I could definitely see the fun in it.
That bonus personality does tend to lead to some rather embarrassing consequences (of course it does!). But all’s well that ends well… And it ends very very well. Without giving away any spoilers, Rod is quite a nice character and I do enjoy watching him work. Too cute. Plus, it led to a very nice wrap up to very amusing (if a bit embarrassing for Martin) situation.
Like I said last time, I really enjoyed this short story and I totally recommend it. It is well rounded, has great characters, and has enough steamy bits to keep you on your toes!

Martin Cooper is an outstanding brother. There probably aren’t many guys out there who’d do his sister a solid by accompanying her on a romantic Valentine’s spa weekend after she’d been dumped by her boyfriend right before the holiday. But, that’s Martin—he’s sweet, kind, and slightly awkward in an adorkably nerdy sort of way, just the type of character Josephine Myles writes so well.
With a head full of champagne and some highly questionable advice from said sister, Martin’s errant middle-of-the-night bathroom adventure soon finds him butt-naked in the hotel corridor. And, of course, who’s both the best and worst person Martin could run into while publicly nekkid? Yes, Rod, god of the Speedo, the guy both Martin and Michelle had been checking out at the hotel pool earlier in the day. What could possibly go wrong, you ask? Pfft. Plenty. But it’s what goes right in the end that matters.
The short story/novella isn’t an easy medium to pull off, but Josephine Myles always manages to make it look effortless. In Locked Out we somehow manage to get to know Martin simply by watching him interact with his sister, Rod, and some of the children he teaches. In fact, him being an elementary school teacher—a near novelty for a man—says a great deal about what a gentle soul he is, which makes the way he meets and then leaves Rod (and why he does it) so out of character, yet also reveals even more about the sort of man Martin is. Certainly not the love ‘em and leave ‘em kind, that’s for sure.
A bit of serendipity goes a long way toward giving Martin a much needed, and, quite honestly, a deserved second chance to make a good first impression on Rod. Because Michelle’s advice… well, let’s just say this time he meets Rod as Martin Cooper—no more, no less necessary.
Locked Out is such a heaping helping of sweet wrapped in a Martin shaped package, a lovely and romantic confection for the holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed this small gem.
It was pretty cute -- the whole meet-up and then the reunion afterwards. But the whole sex scenes were met with my disapproval. I skipped them all, they bored me. Of course I tend to prefer less sex scenes in my romance anyway *shrugs*. I'm an odd duck that way.
What a thoroughly enjoyable book! And really funny too! Martin goes to a hotel with his sister for a getaway after she was dumped by her boyfriend. After a night of drinking, Martin gets up to go to the bathroom. Seeing that he is in a strange place and fuzzy from the drinks, he opens the wrong door and ends up out in the hotel hallway! Naked!! His sister is passed out and won't wake up. What is he going to do?
When someone enters the hallway and sees Martin locked out, Martin is mortified! Not only because of his lack of clothing, but because its the smoking hot man-Rod-he witnessed swimming at the pool this afternoon! Rod is amused by Martin's predicament and offers to help. As Martin accepts his help, he's surprised by Rod's forwardness. Things go straight to smoldering in a matter of minutes! Martin has never been good at seduction, but things feel different with Rod. What is he going to do? Slink away or take the bull by the horns and tell Rod what he wants???
Josephine Myles tells this endearing story inspired by a friends' drunken escapade! Once you read the blurb, you are left smirking, and you just have to read it!

I was gifted this book by the Jeep Diva for the express purpose of an honest review. The rating and review are my opinions and in no way was I compensated.
Martin’s sister was dumped by her boyfriend and has nonrefundable reservations at a fancy spa resort. Martin comes with her for moral support and you know, spa! The two of them are so cute together, arguing like loving siblings will. What they agree on is the hunk wearing the speedo at the pool. Eye candy, yes sir! Unfortunately, the next time Martin meets Rod, the gorgeous swimmer, he’s half drunk, has to pee and is locked out of the hotel room. Naked. Embarrassing! I admit it, made me laugh. He’s a teacher for pete’s sake! We can’t be locked out of our hotel rooms. And not naked! But meeting a hot man by the spa, toe jobs and general hotness? Might make it worth it. Just an aside, I won’t say who does it, but my absolute favorite part was a Valentine card delivered “with a fully loaded breakfast tray this morning, starkers and with the card tucked between his buttocks. I’ve no idea how he managed to get up the stairs that way…” That made me laugh out loud and even now, picturing it, makes me smile. Short, cute and fluffy Valentine’s story!
A year one primary school teacher hooked up with swimming coach Jo Myles' style. This book lift up my mood with its lighthearted banter and steamy scenes (yep, no skimming pages for this one. I gobbled up all the pages! *g*)
An angst free, no drama romp that would have reader laugh from start to finish. ;-)
Ignore the cover of this book and just enjoy the cute tale within. I really enjoyed how this story unfolded and that there was more to the story beyond one night in a hotel room. Josephine Myles is excellent at writing a funny, yet realistic, cute love story and this little sampler lives up to to the skill in my favorite of her books (How to Train Your Dom in Five Easy Steps).
Martin & Rod I guess J. Myles enjoys herself writing stories and it's great because we can enjoy ourselves reading them! Want some fun, light, good time: read a Myles story!
Locked Out is a totally hot, really fun short story, from embarrassing start to romantic finish. Take charge Rod and adorably awkward Martin may have met under less than ideal circumstances, but the chemistry between them is instant and seriously hot, and the romance than develops after a few trips is incredibly sweet. (Oh, and Martin's sister?? Feisty and wonderful!!) Locked Out is a humorous, sexy short tale with a romantic happy ending and a wonderful epilogue. Another Josephine Myles winner!
