Amanda Cabot

With both parents avid readers, it's no surprise that Amanda Cabot learned to read at an early age. From there it was only a small step to deciding to become a writer. Of course, deciding and becoming are two different things, as she soon discovered. Fortunately for the world, her first attempts at fiction were not published, but she did meet her goal of selling a novel by her thirtieth birthday. Since then she’s sold more than forty novels. When she’s not writing, Amanda enjoys sewing, cooking and – of course – reading.

This was a hard collection for me as I could only finish reading two out of nine stories, and one of those completed stories I ended up disliking. Usually I push through on these novellas and finish all of them, but this one I just couldn't--I DNFd the other seven. Besides the fact that I think Barbour did not spend as much time polishing these stories as they do the others, a lot of the plots I couldn't get into and a lot of the writing styles weren't compatible with my preferences. In fact, the first novella's style was so confusing to me I moved on after the first two pages. This is all due to preference, of course, but I just had a hard time with the majority of the stories. Which was unfortunate because I've read other books/novellas by some of these authors, like Cecil, Coleman, Stevens, and Tolzma, and really, really liked them.

The two stories I completed were The Depot Bride by Amanda Cabot and Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer.

I liked Cabot's story. It was clever, unique, and a good blend of action and romance. The fact that it takes place in Wyoming, a state often forgotten about or overlooked, made it all the better. It receives a solid four star.

I ended up disliking Sawyer's, which is regrettable since I like some of the other stories by the author. I understand these are novellas. Fitting everything into 20,000 words can be difficult and things are bound to feel a little rushed. Normally, if a novella is slightly rushed, it doesn't bother me. But the two main characters just weren't given a lot of time to develop their relationship. Their dedication to Lucy was sweet, but the romance was not nearly as developed as I personally felt it needed to be. This is all personal opinion, of course, and likely wouldn't bother other readers.

What really disappointed me about this story, though, was the pastor was caught humming a tune found in saloons. For a man who should understand the directives to "set your mind on things above" (Colossians 3:2) and to "think upon whatever is pure, honorable, just, commendable, true, and lovely) (my brief paraphrase of Philippians 4:8), this behavior is unfitting. I was disappointed.

A lot of this was due to personal preference, and I'm not saying these are bad stories. I'm sure they have a lot of faith and sweet romance, along with dashing heroes and brave heroines, but this collection was not, overall, for me. You might like it, though, so give it a shot.

I love romance and trains so when I heard about The Rails to Love Romance Collection, I knew I had to read it. Nine of today's Christian authors collaborate in this collection and the stories are:

Outlaw on the Pueblo Excusion by Diana Lesire Brandmeyer
The Depot Bride by Amanda Cabot
Last Stop, Cordelia by Lisa Carter
Train to Eden by Ramona Cecil
Love on the Rails by Lynn Coleman
The Honeymoon Express by Susanne Dietze
Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer
My Soul Waits by Connie Stevens
World’s Greatest Love by Liz Tolsma

I enjoyed most of them and I loved how love and life are woven throughout each story. My two favorites are The Depot Bride by Amanda Cabot and Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer. The characters were relatable and the romance was sweet.

If you're looking for a collection of sweet romances set along the railroad, read this collection!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Barbour Books for giving me a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.

There's just something romantic about a train adventure, and this heartfelt collection of nine all new novellas delivers it in spades! The stories cover everything historically connected to the railways, from 1868 to 1896, including the people who built them, worked on them, or rode them to begin a new phase of life. From the destitute to the rich, many people traveled across states or the entire continent to find their new homes and a love along the way in these tales.

My favorites were Last Stop, Cordelia by Lisa Carter, The Honeymoon Express by Susanne Dietze, Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer, and World's Greatest Love by Liz Tolsma. They were all good stories though, some with more redemptive themes or faith elements. Overall, this was a very enjoyable collection.

Recommend to fans of historical Christian romances! 4.5 stars

(For details on the individual stories, see comments below.)

I love these historical fiction smorgasbords. So many authors, so many different interpretations of the given theme, The Rails to Love. Some tales take place aboard the early trains,as in The Honeymoon Express,by Susan Dietze, where an unmarried couple, desperate to be on the train, must fake marriage. One, Connie Stevens's My Soul Waits, involves one of the main characters being a railroad heir and learning the ropes from the ground up. Yet another, Train to Eden by Connie Cecil, uses a train wreck to cause amnesia in a main character whose real identity could spell catastrophe for the new relationships she is developing.

While those are some of my favorites, you won't want to miss the other six stories, either. Authors Amanda Cabot, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Lisa Carter,Lynn A. Coleman, and Liz Tolsma, and Diana Brandmeyer round out the list of contributors. Some names may be new, some well-known, but all combine for a tasty nine course progressive reading meal! Bon Apetit!!

I gratefully received an e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This collection of 9 books by 9 authors gave me a new perspective about the railroad in th late 1800's and of it's history. You can tell the characters and their stories were created with talent and from the heart of each of the authors.

I can not choose a favorite story because they each touched my heart. They revealed bravery, faith, trust, forgiveness and last but not least love. All the characters were on a path set by God.

The authors weaved scriptures through the telling of their stories. These can be more than helpful with our daily walk with God.

Now I would like to thank each one of these authors for a splendid job of putting these stories together, each story compliments, not competes with, the other.

I received an ebook copy of this book from Barbour Publishers via NetGalley for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review it is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this historical collection of romances. The stories were perfect for the times when I was in the mood to read but didn't have a lot of time. I could read one story, set the book down, and when I came back to it, start a whole new story.

A fun story about love finding you!  I loved the resolution for Aunt Cora!  I wish we could have heard something more about the scenery other than snow and stars!

The Depot Bride by Amanda Cabot

This is why I love historical romance!  You can take something like a beloved building and create a fictional love around it's beginning!  Very well done!  I have read The Christmas Star Bride already and as these characters came to life, I knew they were familiar!  A wonderful connection!!

Last Stop, Cordelia by Lisa Carter

What an adventure!  I'm especially fond of characters who start out at odds with each other and then come together!  Very well written!

I loved how this mystery unraveled!  Both of them fighting against their godly desire for each other until...  I won't give it away, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Love on the Rails by Lynn A. Coleman

A whirlwind marriage!  Can two opposites ever work it out?  Tilda has to pull all the punches to get Jeffrey to be the man she needs!  Is he up for the challenge?   This is a delightful tale that will keep you on your toes!

The Honeymoon Express by Susanne Dietze

I loved this budding romance!  I don't read a lot of mystery,  but this had enough for you to follow without becoming the main story!  A great book!

Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Aw!  Such an endearing story!  What she wouldn't do for Lucy!  Kim writes an incredible tender story of being worthy and being loved!

My Soul Waits by Connie Stevens

I wish this one was longer!  It ended a bit abruptly, and I was just hoping for a bit more of the budding romance!  I loved this faithfilled story and would love to read more of Connie's books!

This one felt a bit rushed in the romance department, but I loved the unique story!

A series of short stories with a railroad theme. A good long read with a strong Historical Christian Romance theme throughout.

I like to read about women who can take care of themselves. They have the brains and pluck to keep going and get done what needs to be done - often putting others first. But then you add that encounter with a man who can come to her aid. And she learns that even though she is strong, it's nice to have someone around to help - and they become a team. Especially when he appreciates her qualities. I've met some consistent 'damsels in distress' who rely on a man for every whim. And the men who love to be needed and provide that constant assistance and care. But it's never been who I am or what I want. I prefer the other, strong independent type. In this book, you get all of the above. Plus those who don't think they're good enough for the one they love. And some Irish characters, a soft spot in my heart - they did play a strong part in constructing the railways. This is not a quick read, which I love. The theme is the same, but the stories are not shared.

This is a wonderful anthology.

These are 9 authors who have written novellas about finding love. Each story involves a journey on a train. And each story involves people who have faith in God.

The stories, though short, are quite complete.

Each plot involves a train trip in the 19th century. The trips vary from laying track following the Civil War to well established and scheduled trains crossing the great plains. There are large and small adventures but each one is entertaining and interesting.

The characters are people who are learning about life and love and their faith. Although the novellas are short, the characters are well rounded, quite human and generally very likable people. The lives they led in the past have influenced how they respond to life in the here and now. Those responses make these stories worthwhile reads.

The authors have each developed their craft to a point of excellence.

This is a read which will not appeal to anyone who does not want to read about people who live their lives devoted to God. Which is a shame, because the stories are so well done, the reader will miss a wonderful anthology.

I won this book in a contest. I am voluntarily writing this review. All opinions are my own.

Rails to Love is a short story collection written by a number of different inspirational authors. With nine different stories about different people, and different times in history, it gives you a wide range of enjoyment.
I wasn't necessarily in love with all of the stories. Some of them seemed a bit rushed or just thrown together, but they were good stories, and better than I could have ever done on my own.
If you're looking for a quick read, the romance collections are for you. They include several short stories that are enjoyable and fast.
I rate Rails to Love with a five out of five. I liked the book and the idea of some of the stories, but as I have already stated, they seemed a bit rushed, like there could have been more to the story. All in all the novellas were quite enjoyable.

I was given this book without cost, per NetGalley for an honest and complete review.

There are nine stories in this collection, and I feel like there were a few too many. Some stories were better than others, of course, but this book felt never ending. My favorite stories were The depot bride, Last stop, Cordelia and The honeymoon express. Some of these stories really stretched their tie-in to the railroad. The first few pages would set up with the character getting off the train, and then the rest of the story would have nothing to do with a train or the railroad. This disappointed me since I picked this up because of the railroad theme.

This is a wholesale, romantic anthology with the railroad as the theme. These stories were so interesting. I am a history nerd and love learning about the past. The story about the construction of the Cheyenne depot fascinated me. I love it when stories inspire me to learn more. I'm glad one of the tales focused on the construction and connection the Union and Central Pacific Railroads. I grew up near the "Golden Spike" Monument and remember listening to the train whistles at night as the trains passed through town. I loved the nostalgic tone of this volume.

This a sweet historical romance novellas of 9 Historical Love Stories of people that met or rode on the train. Some I liked more than others. I liked Outlaw on the Pueblo Excursion. I liked Mary and Wyatt they had so much in common. Another one I liked was Last Stop, Cordelia. It had me hooked from the beginning. Action from the beginning of the novella. I also liked The Honeymoon Express. They were all good though. They showed faith throughout the novel.

The Rails to Love Romance Collection is a collection of Nine Christian Romance writers. The books: Outlaw on the Pueblo Excursion by Diana Brandmeyer; The Depot Bride by Amanda Cabot; Last Stop, Cordelia by Lisa Carter; Train to Eden by Ramona Cecil; Love on the Rails by Lynn Coleman; The Honeymoon Express by Susanne Dietze; Just for Lucy by Kim Vogel Sawyer; My Soul Waits by Connie Stevens; World’s Greatest Love by Liz Tolsma.
All of the books in the collection were associated with railroad…either railway stops, workers, riders, rich and poor, looking for love or running from it, anything on or around the railroad.
I believe my one favorite books was Diana Lesire Brandmeyer’s Outlaw on the Pueblo Excursion. Think of a young woman who thinks she wants to be missionary and chooses to travel w her maiden aunt…running from the thought of ever marrying, but life what she thought she would be doing changes by way of a reporter…will she be that missionary or is love going to win her over?
Every story is interesting and easy to read especially for those that are interested in late 1800’s and railroad Christian Romance. Love that each one has it’s little bit that just pulls you in and keep you turning those pages! Get ready for a bunch of great train adventures!

Nine couples meet on or near the railroad and encounter drama, danger, and heartache. But their faith in God and each other will pull them through and bless them with a beautiful love story on the rails. Each story is written by a different author and is tied together by the theme, romance, and faith. Each author brings her writing style and her faith in God to the story to create a rich set of novellas that will be enjoyable for readers.

I enjoyed these stories. As with any collection, there are always favorites. But I liked all of them. The authors did a great job of creating tension and character depth in a short time. Several of these authors are new to me and I look forward to reading more of their books. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys clean romance, a bit of suspense, and a story woven together by faith. This would also make an excellent gift for the Christian fiction reader on your list.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.

I have developed the habit of reading a novella in between reading larger novels or heavier-content books. I use them as a palate cleanser for reading. I LOVE Barbour Publishing for putting out so many novella collections. I love the themes this publishing house comes up with, I love the authors who fill the collections, and I love the stories.

The Rails to Love Romance Collection worked great as a palate cleanser. Each story took me away for a couple of hours of blissful reading without a lot of deep thought. These narratives each tell of love happening on or near a railroad during the early years of train travel. Some involve children and some involve ladies who think they are too long in the tooth to be a bride, but each one brings true love to the fore.

Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a train trip to love.

My thanks to Barbour Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.

Though I didn't care for the first story, I loved all the ones that came after. Amanda Cabot's I enjoyed so much I read the preceding Christmas Star Bride story in another collection just to learn Esther and Jeremy's story and was equally happy with it! The first story's plot seemed a bit unbelievable with the romance a bit underdeveloped and the chances of an affluent spinster adopting a total stranger on the spot when the whole trip complained of her annoying personality and constant lying seemed unbelievable. But boy were the rest of the stories make up for it! Don't let the first story deter you, these stories are hard to put down!
