The Juliette Society #2

The Janus Chamber

Rate this book
A few years have passed since Catherine's time in the The Juliette Society, but things haven't been going the way she planned. Her life with her fiancé Jack has become predictable and boring, especially in the bedroom. Now working as a journalist, she struggles to find inspiration in her work or at home--until she starts writing about the death of a publicly beloved model, Inana Luna, whose experiences reflect Catherine's own blossoming sexuality and independence. What started as a routine story quickly becomes Catherine's obsession, as she follows the tale of a woman whose tracks take her down a road with too many familiar facets: a fascination with kink, lustful men, and some very sexy intrigue. Like the Roman god Janus, Catherine is simultaneously looking to the past and the future. Can her experiences with The Juliette Society, along with Inana's diary, help her figure out what she really wants in life, love, and sex? Or will the story drag her back down into a tantalizing world from which she might not be able to escape a second time?

The second book in this series is just as fun and just as flawed as the first, and the plot works pretty well even if you haven't read The Juliette Society, which is a good job because, three years on, I can't remember that much about it. Catherine, a film student in the first book, is now a journalist, although she's still in a relationship with nondescript political aide Jack. She's hunting for a juicy story when she happens on reports of the disappearance, and later supposed suicide, of Inana Luna, a model-turned-artist and renowned provocateur. Via one of those insanely implausible 'you start tomorrow!' scenes only found in trashy books and soaps, Catherine gets Inana's former job at a super-luxe hotel, where she infiltrates a sex club. All the while, the spectre of Anna – the friend who introduced Catherine to the Juliette Society – hovers over Catherine's investigation, raising the question of who she's really searching for.

The problems I had with this book were, as far as I can remember, the same problems I had with the first. Grey is determined to have her protagonist in a committed relationship, I suppose to show the tension between the life Catherine outwardly leads and the more debauched direction her id is constantly pulling her towards. But I couldn't see any reason Catherine would stay in this relationship in the first book, and I couldn't see it here: she says she loves Jack, but it's telling without showing, and I never got any sense of why.

It's clear Grey has poured much of herself into this character. Catherine radiates sexual wisdom and waxes philosophical on everything from fetish clubs to the cult of branding; she's also passionately opinionated, often angry, and gives voice to many frustrations, railing against things you can tell are Grey's own personal bugbears (widespread objectification of women vs. the way brazen female sexuality is still perceived as taboo, and unnecessary vilification/mocking of harmless private kinks). The end result certainly makes Catherine more interesting, but she understands herself and her own desires far too well to be as naive as she is about Jack.

Also: the plot is flimsy; Bob DeVille is as much of a pantomime villain as his name suggests; some of the metaphors – okay, a LOT of the metaphors – are eye-wateringly terrible. And yet... just like The Juliette Society, The Janus Chamber is compelling and addictive, and Catherine is the kind of heroine you want to stick with. She's infuriating and contradictory sometimes, but that makes her feel real; she's at her most interesting and believable when she's describing art – rhapsodising about her love of Italian cinema, or bringing Inana's photographs and films to life. That, in turn, helps to make the story of Inana more intriguing than it has any right to be.

A warning (and possibly a spoiler), though: the book ends on a cliffhanger, without much resolution, especially with regards to the Inana plot. It's very transparently set up for the third installment of what I can only presume will now be at least a trilogy. This was mildly irritating since I really wanted to know what actually happened with Inana... and I suppose I have to read the third one now.

I received an advance review copy of The Janus Chamber from the publisher through NetGalley.

The Juliette Society, Book II: The Janus Chamber by Sasha Grey is an exploration and revelational journey of Catherine, a former member of the Juliette Society. A sexual need and desire in Catherine is stirred when her love life had become stale. She needed to feel alive again and so when she enters back to explore her raw sexual need, she is thrown into a whirlwind. Will Catherine discover that she was meant for this kind of lifestyle?

The writing style is very different than your typical erotic romance but overall I found this book entertaining. It was raw, sexual, and erotic. Sasha Grey didn’t hold anything back as she took her readers on a journey that was sensory filled of eroticism that will test your boundaries of comfort. So if you like your stories with a side of sexual kink, The Juliette Society might be the book for you.

Well, I'm disappointed, this is not what I expected. I wanted Catherine to truly explore more her sexuality, to keep going deeper and see where her limits are. Instead I get a half assed journalist that gets derailed from her job because she wants to know more about Inana, just because she is into the same kinks as her, not because she wants a story. And I also got a sort of badly written mystery. I never knew anything about Inana, nothing at all, and I got Anna mixed into the story again. We have Catherine trying to solve a mystery, while truly she spends most of her time raving about life, suicide, death, and how catholic girls are suppossed to be good and she is not, and debating whether she is twisted or not. I tell you, she gets derailed so much from her train of thought that the story doesn't flow as it should, amd Catherine becomes really annoying.
The true action came until the end of the book, and it was honestly good, but it came in too late, I had lost much interest by them.

This book was erotic had a few surprises but overall in my opinion was not what I was expecting. It was slow in spots and had a too much detail in some areas and not enough detail in other areas. The characters were likeable and I felt for the main one at times. Overall the writing was easy to read.

Pijn is energie. Daar had Newton tenminste gelijk in."

Geluk is relatief.

There are a lot of things I hated about this book. Let me start with the narration: while most of them made sense, I don't think it does anything for the plot. Furthermore, there's more woke rambling instead of plot progression, it made me want to stop reading the book but I didn't because I was hoping it would get better—sadly, it didn't.

In connection to the narration s some of the lines the characters were given: I don't think some of the words the characters said would something people would say in real life say but hey, this is a fiction book.

Here comes the reason why this review is hidden: I really didn't enjoy reading Catherine forcing Jack to fuck her in the way she wants to be fucked. I felt uncomfortable reading that, because I hate it when anyone tries to force someone into doing what they don't want to do. I mean, Jack ends up fucking Catherine in the way she's been wanting him to, which I think is toxic. Also, didn't Catherine cheat on Jack first, going in the freaky sex club without telling him? These two, ugh.

What the fuck happened to Inana? She seemed like an interesting girl, I just wanted to know what drove her to commit suicide but nope, I got everything I didn't ask for.

I can't wait to be done with this series.

Expected more and not a lot of references to show that the author knows about cinema, literature and other stuff. The first chapters are boring and when the action starts to take off, characters are not well developed, an inmature, toxic and childish boyfriend and a protagonist unable to seed those red flags. A presidential candidate and an elite club with tons of people that somehow remains a secret.

I despise the phrase 'guilty pleasure', but I rather enjoyed Ms. Grey's first Juliette Society novel, so of course I was ready for another hearty helping. This one carried on the sticky mixture of ludicrous high-brow pursuits with absolute filth and was rather cheesy, more than a bit silly and tremendous fun to read one-handed. I look forward to strapping on the third in the series.

I'm not into erotica but this was not as cringe as I thought it would be. It feels like it blends memoir with manifesto and got very into ideologies in some places. I managed to find the audiobook on Spotify and was glad to give it a go. Overall pretty decent.

Sexy and intrigue carefully blended into a suspenseful that will have an person, who feels a bit trapped and run-down in life, grabbing it by the covers and diving straight into its sensual, exciting pages.

I loved the continuation of this series. It was great to get to know our main character, in the first book, as she grew, evolved and moved on from the destructive past she had. However, not all pasts are meant to remain buried ad hers is definitely one of those cases.

I like that her ‘boring’ job ends up taking her on a journey and experience that is entirely unexpected. She becomes obsessed and needs to find the answer to her new case. However, she becomes trapped. She doesn’t know where to go or which path is right for her. Does she leave boring and tempt her life or stay and feel leaden to the ground? I liked this in particular because we all reach a point or time in life where we feel similar to this. Each of us deals in our own way, but some are like our main character and remain stuck, until something shifts and the find themselves rolling again. In all truth, life can be just like this and often it responds with an answer that isn’t entirely good for us.

I felt as though the pace truly matched the story. It gave us plenty of time to take it all in and really build up the emotion, anticipation and fear. I liked that. Then we were thrown into a spiral, dodging and trying to get through the excitement and danger. Brilliant.

This book takes a closer look at some facets of Catherine's sexuality which were only briefly explored in the first book.  Although I found the Janus Chamber to be fairly predictable, it was another stream of consciousness-style journey through an often misunderstood culture, and I appreciated the author's many references to mythology which were not used as much in book 1.  Grey's writing is a bit stronger in this second installment and I can see the potential for even more growth for Catherine as a character as well.  Anytime you have an erotic novel you wonder if the plot will be at all a factor, but this one does absolutely have much more going on than just sex.  In fact, there's not even as many sexual encounters described in this second book, with the focus shifting more to the mystery involved.  I would definitely have liked for the story to surprise me more, but sometimes I think the writer wants you the reader to know what's going on even when the main character is still figuring it out, so I'm not displeased by the book for this reason.  Adults only, as this one is just as dark and graphic as the first, if not more so.

Book provided from Galley for an open and honest review.
I had not read the first instalment of this book but found that it was not entirely necessary but may spark your interest to go back to see the back story.. if I'm honest I nearly gave up on this book because the start appeared rather slow but I am so pleased that I persevered. This is not written in a predictable way, there are threads of opinion and also education. I found myself googling some factoids to see if they were opinion or fact.Anyway stick with this Catherine is a strange but intriguing character on a journey of exploration and life as she knows it is not what it should be.
Who is pulling those strings? Is she in control? Is someone controlling her?
The journey includes insight in to relations, secret clubs and of course sex. So if you are prudish don't read this.
The end could be that if you don't like reading series but it does make you want the next instalment.
Glad I stuck with it.

This is a book you want to read slow. Her first book was quite good and this one is a very nicely written sequel. Along with the different storylines, you will get a pretty good view on the way Sasha Gray is looking into the world. And it's quite a intense and deep view of understanding of how our modern society works. The story takes you further down the road with Caterina and her personal journey. The book is absolutely erotica and has a nice subtile style with it. I've read this book with great pleasure and will definitely gonna read it more than once.

Flawed, but entertaining. Enough sex scenes to be filed under 'erotic', though the BDSM kind of took over. Certain plot points didn't work for me. It's very much a second book in a trilogy. Grey likes to go off on tangents and can get a bit preachy at times. But some of the tangents work.

Sex is in the mind before the body. The idea can turn us on as much as the touch...

http://www.voluptueusementvotre.fr/20...
