Dee’s just met Malcolm, lead singer of the biggest rock group of their decade, by breaking his nose in a bar. Surprisingly, he lets her set it back in her van for the chance to get to know her. Thinking they’ll never see each other again after that incident, the two are shocked when they keep running into each other in different cities all over the country. With music and the scary variable of chance on their side, they dare to fall in love with each other. Will their cities line up? Can they make it work? Or will fate make it entirely impossible for them?

Jayna Ostler grew up in Northern Utah. When she's not busy writing her next novel, she's adding to her personal library, attending concerts, contemplating her next tattoo, fangirling hard over one of many fandoms, and balancing work life with her creative one. Swallow, her debut book, was written in fifteen days. The Openers and Stereo followed quickly after in their publishing. Seven Cities is her fourth book and she continues to plan and plot many more to come.

Despite being set in a decade that I've never experienced firsthand, Ostler has again worked her magic of roping me in and keeping me anchored until the end. I enjoyed the change of pace from my usual modern novels; it was fun to be plopped in a setting where communication was more difficult and mobile phones were a fortune. (The earliest memories I have of cell phones were playing Snake on my mom's Nokia and ringtones costing money!) Since I've lately taken a more serious approach to writing, I also wanted to point out how much I love the secondary characters and all the different ways they mold Malcolm and Dee. Overall, I knocked off a star because the plot started snowballing a bit later than I would've liked, but I loved this story so much, I plan to read it again in the future.

Irrelevant to the book:
I initially started reading while waiting for doors to open at a Simple Plan concert in 2017. I would've killed this book sooner had school and studying not been in the way. The moment I realized that , I slammed it down and cried in an ugly manner. It's almost 2:30AM, but I feel almost desperate to write this review -- this is such a great book!

I met Jayna about two years ago during Camp NaNoWriMo when we were placed in the same cabin. After NaNo ended, she invited me to be part of her writing group on Facebook, where I was quickly welcomed by the rest of her friends. Jayna and I have been virtual friends ever since, sharing our writing and basically obsessing over books. I’ve bought all four of Jayna’s novels to date, and while I absolutely loved each one, Seven Cities is by far my favorite. I can say 100% that it is one of the best novels I’ve ever read in my entire life.

The full review is on my blog, which contains minor spoilers!

Solid book. Natural narrative style. It only misses five stars because I like to see who I'm rooting for. It took a while for me to even know that Dee had brown hair, and there was no real sense of time. I picked this up at an indie bookstore where the author was signing and she told me it was set in the 80s. I'm 40, so I picked up on Ostler's subtle nods to the decade. People younger than me might not get it right away. Killer scenes, fun characters, and some moments of really lovely prose. This is a fun read.

I love the way Jayna Ostler writes! This newest book Seven Cities did not disappoint! From the very first punch I was hooked. Her characters are so easy to relate with. Following Dee and Malcolm through each city I found myself rooting for them to find each other, to have a couple more minutes together.
When reading this book make sure you have no plans for the day and if so cancel them, because you are not going to want to put this book down. Real life will have to be put on hold.

I have the opportunity to read Jayna's novels before they're published, which is one of many benefits to knowing an author personally. First, I love how fun the cover is. And beneath it is a quick read, a story that I can picture as clear as a movie (and it would make an awesome movie). If you've read any of her novels, add this to your collection.
