Sixteen-year old Saylor had been told she was a stain on the cloth of mankind. When she and her sister orphans Micah, Denise, and Patricia are apprehended upon the high seas, they find themselves imprisoned on a Caribbean island filled with strange noises, dazzling beaches, and a secret military base. Wavering between terror and ecstasy, Saylor develops her inner warrior while facing an enemy who exposes her indispensable abilities. In order to rescue her sisters, impress the hunky Australian, and protect innocent lives on a global scale, she must master techniques of fighting an army created to destroy with a single, scorching touch -- or die trying.
Fierce in a sparkly kind of way, Kadee Carder brings hope, adventure, and thrill wherever she writes. The goal is magic, the medium is ink, and the fuel is coffee. And sometimes pizza. I teach writing on the university level when I'm not dancing around the living room with my family, lifting heavy at the gym, traveling the planet (on foot or Google maps), or bingeing superhero shows.
The INSURRECTION trilogy, HERE BE DRAGONS, KINGDOM COME, IGNITE, and soon-to-be-released EARTHSHINE roll out perilous motives, twisty plots, and daring protagonists. Grab some real estate and your copy of her latest book, and follow along on social media.
What a great debut novel! Action packed pages and a sassy main character, Saylor, Insurrection is a book you don't want to miss out on! Onto book two now for me :)
I loved this story. The characters are so witty, well developed and real. The growth Saylor goes through is touching and had me rooting for her every step of the way. The technology introduced is intriguing and frightening. Like what would happen if your favorite pass time started fighting back and you were thrown into the deadliest game of baseball you could ever imagine. In the midst of the awesome kick butt-ness are the girl giggles of a first crush that will have you swooning and wanting more.
An amazing first novel in a series that I can already tell will become one of my favorite series.
If you are looking for a unique science fiction book you need to pick this book up! You will be mesmerized by the story, the wonder of the strange island, the romance developing, and the unwavering friendship.
In the years following the Flare, an electrostatic disaster that literally fried all technology on Earth, people had to relearn the basic art of living. Some did; many didn’t. And the repercussions saw many children abandoned and placed in government-sanctioned homes. Saylor, so named because she was found as an infant on a battered, abandoned boat, was one of these parent-less children. Placed in a home for abandoned children, Saylor connects with other girls similarly abandoned. Her best friends, Micah, Denise and Patricia, are her family. So, at sixteen, when one is told she will be taken in by a foster family and another is to be sent away to a different home and Saylor, ever rebellious, is to be sent to some sort of detention facility way across the country, it is time to take action, or lose the only family that any of them has ever known. Their choice of escape? A sad-looking sailboat at the nearby marina, waiting, no calling for the girls to take it out on the waters. And they do. And all goes well until the storm hits and their carefully planned escape leads them into another trap. But is it a trap? Or is this isolated island in the Caribbean that no one’s ever heard going to be the end of their dream of freedom? For Saylor, at least, it means a very grueling undertaking as the powers that be demand that she train for their military. And train she does, exceptionally well. But, as her training officer, Logan, points out, she must find her purpose and she must believe in both her purpose and in herself. Quite a lot to ask for someone who is just turning seventeen.
Kadee Carder’s young adult science fiction novel, “Insurrection”, is a powerful story that addresses the ultimate possibilities of ‘what if’. A disaster wipes out technology, but it doesn’t wipe out the human race. Instead, it creates a whole new world of possibilities and, in this world, a group of girls, determined to stay together, pave their own way, or at least they try to. The main character, Saylor, is both likeable and believable. She sets a standard that would appeal to young female readers and, as such, makes an excellent role model. She is strong, both physically and psychologically. She is a power to be reckoned with. She is determined and committed to her goals. And, as her trainer says later in the novel, she is ‘insurrection’, but in a good way. The plot is thrilling and intense and leads the reader to a very compelling and unexpected climax and resolution. This is the first book in a trilogy, so there’s more Saylor stories to excite young readers. Fantastic!
"Insurrection" is a wonderful debut novel by author Kadee Carder. The thing that most impressed me was the character development. The characters were real and deep, just leaping off the page. Wanting to know more about the characters and what will happen to them is what will drive me to get the next book in this series. I also enjoyed the story. I appreciate any book that keeps me guessing-and this one certainly did! If you are looking for a YA read with a sci-fi flare, this is the book for you.
Taking the young-adult genre and turning it on its ear, Ms. Carder produces a fascinating tale of one teen’s journey from one aspect of a post-apocalyptic world into one that’s completely different from the life she escaped.
This book is so much fun. I love reading and figuring out what's gonna happen next so I can see most things coming. But this book kept me guessing the whole way through. Saylor is a strong and sassy role model and her story is clean enough to share with my daughter. Can't wait for book 2!
I really enjoyed following Saylor's story and it was fun to see how she evolved over the course of the events she experiences. The author did a good job researching about military life and its intricacies, plus you can tell the author is a softball fan! And the pacing was good, with the intense action scenes broken up at times by slower scenes with more character development. Recommended read!
Beautiful writing, sassy characters - readers will enjoy Saylor as she learns the value of her self-worth as she embarks on an epic journey. Check it out peeps!
