This review is for the study guide. I'll have a separate review for the book.

I was part of a small group of ladies that studied The Excellent Wife together (our husbands studied the Exemplary Husband separately) and we used this study guide for most of our discussion.

This is my least favorite kind of study guide because it offered very little for personal application. The majority of the questions seem to be aimed at reading comprehension. Many of the questions tell you exactly on what page (down to the paragraph) to find the answer. This made for really awkward, surface-y discussions when we went through our answers together...why even participate in the discussion when everyone has the same answer found in the last paragraph on page 37? I eventually quit filling out the study guide because it felt like a waste of time to parrot back the author's writing.

In some places she does ask you to list/explain things in your own words, and she does also have some application questions, but the majority of it was search and find from the book like a school worksheet. Considering the topic, I thought this was a real missed opportunity. I would imagine very few people are reading books of this topic just to know the material. Most people are looking for how they can apply it to their lives.

I know I wasn't the only one in the group that found this study guide to be kind of a letdown. It's not completely without value, but I wouldn't plan to use it as a discussion guide without supplementing it or going off script for a good chunk of it.

Excellent! I loved how this study guide helped apply all the great nuggets of wisdom found in the book. I don't think anyone should go through the book without this accompaniment! Totally worth it!

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

“God created a wife for Adam who was to be his helper suitable. If you are a wife, He has also determined your primary ministry and role in life. Yours and every wife’s chief end in life is to glorify God, but it is to glorify Him in the manner in which God planned. You are to be a helper suitable for your husband (Genesis 2:18).”

Quote from: The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace, (p10) a must read for every women!

“Our view of life is to be God-centered, not self-centered. We are here to serve Him, rather than Him being here to serve us. He alone is worthy to be praised. Understanding your proper position as a creature serving the Creator is foundational to clearing up any misperceptions you may have about God and His protective authority over you.”

You aren't going to get much out of the accompanying study guide. The questions are quite redundant and regurgitory in nature. If it helps you to remember things by writing something down repetitively then you might like it. I felt it did not make me think or apply what I had learned (or disagreed with) in the book.

I did this study in 2005 with some very dear friends that helped me see what I was called to be as a wife through Christ.
