Name (in native language) : 高屋奈月

Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.

She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.

In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.

According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.

“Don’t let stress build up and bury you. When you do that, you might miss what’s important right now.”

Great volume! I can’t stand Akito with an overwhelming passion though. Definitely in my top 5 least favorite villains ever.

Momiji is so precious! I really love his character a lot.

Lots of Kyo feels. 🥰🥰🥰

I always love fruba but this was really what I needed after such a disastrous week. It always serves as a great reminder of how important is to be kind, and I needed that. It was a balm for my soul.

In actual fruba-related comments, this was a great volume for Kyo's character development, and I am always here for that.

i love this series so much and this volume was one of the sweetest. kyo realising and coming to terms about his emotions and possible future is so cute but sad to see. and kyo’s master if one of the sweetest characters he’s so unbelievably wholesome and his talk with tohru was so cute… seeing them all together in the family home was so wholesome as well but omg i hate akito so much omg, like leave these babies alone!

As I reread Fruits Basket (for the millionth time), it's essentially a game in which I try not to cry every few pages because I love all the characters and the story is so beautiful and emotional.

I feel like we're really getting to the more nitty gritty drama aspect of this manga in this volume, as we get to see more of Akito. And we don't like what we see! Granted, I knew that was where this was going when I started it, but we're definitely starting to see it unfold on the page in this volume.

Also, all the Kyo character development! And Yuki! There's such a dark past there, and I have a feeling it's just going to keep going from there. Despite everything, it's so heartwarming that Tohru is trying to stay positive through it all. Her determination to help try to break the curse? It's adorable. But will also probably lead to heartbreak.

I was planning on reading only one of these volumes tonight, but I needed more!

Volume 11: Ugh, Kyo's emotional revelation gets me every time! He just makes my heart sing. Also, I noticed Momijj getting taller in this one and it hurt my heart.... Also I hate Akito that is all.

Volume 12: Things are getting pretty heavy! Though Shigure being an asshole to Mayu and Hana falling for Shishou does make me laugh still.... I need to prepare myself for heartbreak.

It ain't like she took on all my pain. It ain't like she solved all my problems either. That crap ain't important. The most important thing is that she's there for me.
I've mentioned in other reviews for this series that Tohru is a saint, and Akito himself acknowledges this. He also does his level best to leave Tohru shaken after their encounter, as he does every other member of the family. I really have no sympathy for someone who acts like this. I don't care if he's lonely, or was abused himself, or if the curse is constraining him to act this way, or whatever. I just don't.

Sometimes Fruits Basket hits like a freight train, and at others it misses the mark, but it does the former often enough to make it well worth while as an emotional read. It's always nice to get cozy with a volume or two of this "found family" story.

this vol was insane at showing just how toxic akito is. his abusive nature and how he holds everyone back really shows another side to the sohma family. really curious to see how it unfolds, especially with tohru disrupting his plans, basically being the opposite of who he is. we also got insight into kyo's feelings for tohru:

"when did i start feeling like my name had a special ring to it whenever you called out to me?"

my heart, goodbye

It's the end of summer vacation, and graduation is coming closer, but before that is parent-teacher conferences and figuring out what the high school students want to do in the future...

Tohru has decided on a goal, and that is to break the zodiac curse. Akito threatened Tohru to not interfere with his plans to keep all the zodiac characters in one place, and Kyo, the hated cat, to be put in an area of darkness after graduation.

Each volume just keeps getting better and better, and I'm one volume closer to the end of such a brilliant and intricate story. We are introduced to Rin, Haru's ex and the horse spirit and Kagura confesses to Kyo...

With the rebooted anime due to release on Funimation Network in April, I thought it was time to re-start my re-read of the Fruits Basket manga. I read volumes 1-4 of the new collected editions from Yen Press last year, and these volumes comprise most of what is shown in the original anime.

While I'm reminded of how much I was sucked into the story when I first read them as TokyoPop released them, re-reading both volumes 5 and 6 also reminded me that... man, there's a heckuvalot of drama as well. Don't get me wrong, there is a purpose (well, for the most part), and the good news is that it's spread out over so many different characters and storylines. This is also where the overarching story shifts away from the fluffy-fun part of the Zodiac to the much darker undertones of the curse. We also don't see as much transformation of the Zodiac characters, which is a bummer to my Fantasy-loving heart, but I think it helps show the seriousness of the Sohmas' situation.

There's a couple of chapters in volume 6 where Akito (the head of the Sohma family) goes to Tohru while she and other members of the Zodiac are vacationing at a summer house. And Akito pretty much spells out the inevitable fate of all those within the Zodiac, especially for Kyo and Yuki, which is a hard-hit to Tohru. It's a pretty powerful scene and reminds me of how much I want to punch Akito, even though they are tied in the curse as well. Being at the halfway mark of the overall story, there's still much to cover before reaching the end, so I shall continue my re-read and reflection of the series.

Fruits Basket has a special place in my manga-loving heart and on my bookshelf, but these past couple of volumes have made me reflect and realize that wow, there's a lot to cover. I enjoyed them just not as much as the first four volumes. We will see how the second half of the series re-read will play out.

5⭐️.
It feels like the main story is finally progressing in this volume. All the flash-backs to the past come related to things happening in the present. Tohru being scared of people wanting to see dead people and leaving her alive and behind when she visits her ill grandfather missing Tohru's mother and Father. We readers also find out when Kyo meet Kagura the first time and Kagura' initial reasons for getting close to Kyo. No matter how mad Kagura felt about herself and the curse, she knew that Kyo's fate was worse. Kyo has realised that he is in love with Tohru and hence Kyo needs to put an end to the pushy love efforts from Kagura. Kagura is surprisingly calm about the fact the idea of her and Kyo is falling apart and cries instead of having violet outbursts. Yuki has been thinking of when Haru and Rin visited him in the past. In the present Rin and Haru have broken up and Rin is going on her mission on her own, acting very defensive and rude towards people standing in her way.

There is still a lot to be resolved. Now Tohru knows the extend of the curse and what that will mean to Kyo, Yuki and others. Kyo, Yuki and the others do not know that Tohru knows and Tohru has decided to try to break the curse despite the warnings from Akito.

I am actually deceased. This volume has killed me.

Kyo and Tohru just deserve all the happiness together after going through all of this utter bullshit. I’m so glad we are finally starting to understand Kyo’s feelings and that he’s admitting them to himself.

This made me literally sob, I just cannot express my love for Kyo. I want to wrap him in a blanket and never let him go. To anyone who has ever called him a monster or says that he deserves to die and doesn’t deserve happiness can actually choke.

I seriously have no words for how this manga makes me feel.

The characters are all just soo fleshed out and they all feel so human.

I love Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, Momiji, Haru sooo fucking much. I would do anything for them !

If you hadn’t guessed already it’s a:

5/5 stars ! ✨✨✨✨✨

This is about Tohru and the members of the Zodiac.

I think this is one of my more favorite installments. You are getting a lot more of the plot as the kids are at the summer house, especially with the reveal of Akito. I'm also really liking the character arc for Kyo in this one. Looking forward to seeing how the story continues to unfold.
