Welcome to Monster High! You know that Monster High is the most creeperific school in the world, but do you know how it came to be? It all started with a girl named Draculaura-the daughter of Dracula-who had a dream about creating a place where monsters could belong, get along, and be themselves. To make her dream come true, Draculaura and her best ghoulfriends went on fangtastic adventures around the world to recruit monsters to attend Monster High. But all was not perfectly monstrous at Monster High when a villainous zombie set out to ruin everything Draculaura and her friends worked so hard for. Can the ghouls save the day...and save Monster High?
Welcome To Monster High PLOT: Where it all started from (if you get that song reference I applaud you). Draculaura after YEARS (more like decades of solitude) gets a surprise visitor at her castle. It's an electrifying monster by the name of Frankie Stein. Together they set out to recruit other monsters and form a school for Monsters. (Didn't think of this up to now but haven't I heard this story before? Seems to me like a man in a wheelchair once had the same dream years prior). So with her father's help, they turn their mansion into a school & thus begins Monster High. But not everyone shares Draculaura's dream of monsters & humans co-existing peacefully. Enter Moanica D'Kay (a zombie) who believes monsters should be supreme to humans. It's a showdown for the title of presidency. Who will win Draculaura and Frankie or Moanica (with the help of her Zomboyz)?
MY THOUGHTS *This right off the bat (no pun intended) feels WRONG! Even opening it. But let's start with the title. "Welcome to Monster High". We've already been introduced to Monster High a couple of times. We've been introduced through Frankie in the webisodes. We've also been introduced at the end of the book (and because I REALLY want to prove this point I'm going to dig through the MH books to find this title) Back And Deadlier Than Ever (I know I know different author) it shows the initial phases of MH. It just feels repetitive to keep introducing us to Monster High OVER & OVER & OVER. *Then it feels off to say it's a night school. In none of the webisodes, books prior, or movies is this ever established. *Then in this book, Draculaura already has her powers when in Frights Camera Action she's been at Monster High a while and doesn't get her powers until she helps find Elizabat and get her to accept her role as Queen. *And then Webby (her pet spider)? Draculaura's pet has always been a bat named Count Fabulous. It's been this in the webisodes & even with the original doll. Since when is it a spider? *And then there's Frankie who waltzes over to Draculaura's castle (where apparently she's been holed up for YEARS) and introduces herself. When I thought Frankie (the new ghoul in school) meets Draculaura AT MH. *(Rolling eyes) COME ON a MOUSEICORN? Like a unicorn isn't monster enough? My honest opinion MH is just running out of monster and now it's combining things that don't need to be combined. *And then they find Clawdeen (Draculaura and Frankie) which is not right either. Clawdeen and Draculaura were ALREADY friends. *And then Dracula looked at Clawdeen's mom and blushed? And they sofa sit. Where is Mr. Wolfe? In this, it seems like he's left her by her lonesome to raise a pack of little wolf babies. *Umm in MH the first book Dracula doesn't have to hunt all the monster's down. He already has them under protection. Or is this book before that. It would be a nice fit to a prequel, but for some reason here it's an odd fit. Unless you just really squeeze the other books completely out of your mind. If it was just him and Draculaura maybe this would have worked. It kind of does with Clawdeen. But to have Frankie there you'd have to erase the first book & the first webisode. *GOB? MARSHAL? WOOLEE? CRYSTAL? Who are these people (monsters)?
RATING: 6 UMMM WHERE DID THIS BOOK EVEN COME FROM?! It's so far out of cannon that it feels like a whole nother separate version of Monster High. Almost like a fanfic someone wrote. There are characters we've NEVER heard of. Events that don't match up with anything we've seen or read. Is this Monster High on Earth 2? I do think that if Frankie were left out it would have flowed better as a prequel. But then you'd have to ignore Back and Deadlier than ever as well. This book leaves you with an odd, disconnected, nagging feeling of wanting to shout THAT IS NOT…………HOW THAT’S SUPPOSED TO GO! You just REALLY have to take this one like "the Cursed Child" of the series. I can't even wrap my brain around to process why this was made so out of sync. Now, this isn't to say the story itself is bad. It's not. It again teaches us the importance of acceptance in people (monsters) that are different. And I LOVED seeing Clawdeen have someone crushing on her. Which why have we never seen this in the series? Other than I think Draculaura set her up one time with a (cousin?). And I'm the first to fight (verbally) stories where the female's story ends with her finding a guy and what a messed up message that is about a happy ending. I think Clawdeen IS a fierce enough character, but she can have a love interest. Sadly it's so skipped over it's not even funny. So this did need to happen. I loved the co-president idea of having Frankie & Draculaura win because that was original. And then I'm just noticing something. Do all MH movies end with a song performance or a dance? This really could have worked as an origin story of MH with some minor adjustments. Oh & Tash's revel wasn't really one because when she was on the bus & got freaked out I didn't read that as "Oh I'm scared because your monsters" I read that as "Oh I'm scared that if they see you they'll associate you with me because I'm one of you." Again typical MH reveal you already know. I'm kind of surprised that Jackson didn't get introduced here since it so strongly wanted to show they accepted humans. But then I guess it did that with Tash so no need to be repetitive. Although they could have filled this with the character (Casta?) Because I'm pretty sure as a witch she could do a glamor and thus masquerade herself as human. But more characters, more dolls to sell.
amazing, I can't believe monster high literally used to be draculaura's mansion. the writing is obviously made for younger audiences but it was funny anyway. even the tiny romance in this book made me swoon omfg he's so awkward,,, and also from the in-book pictures and the official monster high origin story trailer, I can say that everyone either looks so cute or is mildly hot, and I'm losing my mind again (positively) imagine if i went to school with any of them omg,,
i really miss being obsessed with monster high and collecting all the dolls and stuff. I think I'm just ranting here but anyways this book is actually like the movie, the lines are more or less the same (DISCLAIMER: I didn't watch the movie!!! i just watched some clips) like I quoted the whole frankie meets drac and her dad scene,, idk I just think it's pretty neat
The first 40 pages or so I had already read in other books (The Diaries series). Interesting take on the beginning of Monster High and other students (I had not heard about these other students in other books) It was OK, take it or leave it but if you're a fan of Monster High I would say it's a must read.
I own it now and I can read it so yeah got it for my birthday from my aunt Darlene so it should be fun you know I actually do like the movie the movie was really good
