Carmilla: Blood Ties
Carmilla Carnstein just wanted to lay low for a couple of weeks before leaving the country. She had been roaming over North America for two decades, and figured it was time to change continents before any of her enemies caught up. She just needed a place to rest for a bit, forge a new identity and acquire some valuables, and then she would be ready to leave.

Unfortunately, her dismal luck with women never gave her a rest, and Carmilla found herself entranced with the young woman living on the apartment next door. Laura was a wreck: addicted to drugs and alcohol, and subjected to abuse and humiliation by her boyfriend. Carmilla knew she should ignore the situation; she couldn’t risk calling attention to herself before leaving, but the sadness and darkness in Laura’s eyes forced her to act.

She might end up putting Laura in more danger though. Carmilla is a vampire, an old one, and hunters were always after her kind, hoping to kill them and without caring about the innocents in their path, and they weren’t the only ones. If there was something Carmilla didn’t lack it was enemies, and many of them were creatures as dangerous as vampires and some even worse. Could she help Laura and not damn her? Or would she be condemning the other woman to a painful death simply by trying to help?

Carmilla: Blood Ties is a book dealing with themes of drug and alcohol addiction, and a woman’s struggle to define herself and her own preferences. Contains lesbian erotica, lesbian romance, paranormal, vampires and hunters, blood and sex.

What can I say? I love to write about sex, to pour whatever naughty fantasies my mind conjures into a story. Most of what I write is erotica, plenty of it about either lesbians or futa. These stories can fall into a broad category of genres, from fantasy to romance, to science fiction, and sometimes a weird mix of all.

Have fun reading them!

I liked this book for a few reasons. First, the romance is very sweet and meaningful. However, Carmilla admits to having the impulse to save those that are lost and in pain, wanting to be, "Her knight in shining armor as someone once had been for me." (Chapter 1) (Which I could see being another story all together, we didn't really get specifics on that part of her back story), and even said, "When I sometimes referred to my need to be a knight in shining armor as a curse I wasn't joking." (Chapter 1). Which sorta explains my point for me. A lot of the time this impulse is admirable, buts its also a train wreck waiting to happen. Because the one with that impulse, often ends up hurting more. Thats where I was, while reading this. I didn't really leave the edge of my seat, waiting for Carmilla to be the one thats emotional hurt (Even though she's the powerful vampire), by being used by Laura. I was waiting for that curtain to roll up and Laura admit she was using Carmilla, only for what she could give her. That fear increased when Carmilla came up with a "solution" for Laura's pain and addiction, that wasn't exactly "safe" (more trading one addiction for another, and involving dependency in a new way.). Nevertheless, I can 100% see how this "solution" was a much better option than what Laura was already involved in. Admittedly, the romance was still very sweet! Because Carmilla genuinely has a good heart, and does want to help for honest reasons, even if "selfishly" she does hope and wish for a companion of her own.

The characters themselves are enjoyable.
* Like I said, Carmilla has a good heart and honest intentions. She has a very old, sad past, with many mistakes, that she herself needs to work through. What I also liked was how many dimensions Carmilla thinks from. Maybe its because she is a very old vampire, but she does not see things as face value. She observes, calculates and thinks about all possibilities, she's very smart. Seeming willing to hear others out, not jumping to conclusions. What almost threw me, was how unwilling Carmilla was to compel others. She acknowledges how much of an invasion that is and hates to do it. A beautiful change compared to other stories of vampires that definitely abuse that ability. She loves easily and always see's the wounded angel underneath the sad-pained exterior.
* Laura has a dark past. The accuracy of human pain and what it can cause was not censored. She is a very lost soul that needs help (That being where Carmilla comes in). Now, while this wasn't exactly censored, there was something innocent about Laura. What I mean by that? Many addicts will do absolutely ANYTHING for their next fix. Laura had a line that wouldn't be seen if not looking close. For instance, She would do sexual favors, but from what I could tell, had reservations about doing so with strangers. Another instance, when Carmilla says no to giving her money for drugs, she simply cries, doesn't get violent like many would. Not to say she's not capable of doing so, as of right now, she seems a strange type of sad-calm. She's an addict, even so, gives you the feeling she subconsciously wants to heal. Laura had me on the edge of my seat, because I wasn't sure what her intentions were. She's a grey character that could be underhanded, or genuine. Carmilla's thoughts and actions were transparent, Laura was conflicted with most everything. Probably due to just how dependent she is on drugs, as of the beginning of the book. At the end, it did become obvious she does love Carmilla. Just still has a lot to work through. (Appearance wise, her having pink hair was a nice change. Most book characters have natural hair colors and aren't very "unique" in looks. Specifically, with something like pink or differently colored hair.).

Another reason I liked this book, was how there was some theories as to how the human race would react to mass knowledge of supernatural/paranormal creatures (vampires). There was more thought put in then just, "The human race will revolt and try to kill us all!", though that was an option on the board. Not only was there that, it was admitted it was basically impossible for the human race to NEVER find out about the currently unknown. Most the time in stories, shows, movies, the creatures are somewhat in denial, pretending they can stay hidden forever. Similarly, there wasn't just 'Creatures vs. Mean Human Hunters'. There was a vast range of different types of hunters, what they would do, what means they would use, what their values were, etc.

In the end, this book was left open for more of a story to unfold. It felt cut short AND satisfying at the same time. A weird mix. More than anything, it made me think deeply, which was strange for a very short read, specifically a romance/erotic book. I did like the romance (If I could say one thing "negatively". I don't LOVE when one of the main characters stray from the other main character love interest. Having intimate/smut scenes with someone who IS NOT the intended love interest. In this, I can see why it was inserted. As it was more smut and sorta emphasizes who Carmilla is as a person, even not just focusing on who has romantically and more emotionally caught her eye. She doesn't JUST want to help those she deeply cares about. She has the urge to help even strangers.) The smut scenes between Carmilla and Laura were very nice and sweet, I wont lie, I've read far more raunchy scenes in other books and definitely in Ao3 FanFic. As a quick read, I loved this and I'm glad I picked it up!

(I'm aware I get very detail and overanalyze, I can't help it! Its who I am! LOL)

Good

Longer than her other books, but a neat story. Carmella needs to leave the country and decides to rent an apartment before leaving. After getting everything ready she runs into Laura and instant attraction. Carmella doesn’t know why she hasn’t left the country yet, but what a neat way to have a story happen. After meeting Laura things happen that Carmella had no idea would change her life for the better. I enjoyed this longer short story and am glad I read it.

A nice love story

Trust and kindness. We all just need these to find our true selves. This paranormal story is sweet and endearing and I look forward to seeing where they go.

Good story

I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would because it was well written. The plot was coherent and the characters were believable.
