i love that the outdated parts of this are things like "when the police are torturing you, it may help to remember that they’re being kind of gay"

April 13, 2025Not a book I can rate as a 30 year old woman from Fermanagh who grew up unionist but also lived and worked on the Falls road and I've worked with and socially mixed with people who were in the IRA and their children...I've been in a room with Gerry Adams TWICE. I didn't speak to him because he scares the shit out of me...and my dear friend Lyra McKee was murdered by the Real IRA in 2019. So it's all so close to who I am. It's psychologically a fascinating read.

1. Manifesto and Responsibility of a Volunteer
The political foundations of the provisional IRA, that being a loose reading of James Connolly.
The responsibility of a volunteer and discipline necessary.
This section attempts to describe the legitimacy of the movement. It details a gloried past when the nation was free, the exploitation of the Irish by their colonial rulers and reinforces Connolly's dedication to a socialist republic. Connolly would laugh at the current state of Ireland as well as at this Handbook.
2. What to do if arrested and how to resist interrogation
Really verbose detailing of how the british treated IRA prisoners and preparing the volunteer for what torture will be like.
This is my favourite passage, in the context of how stripping when being tortured: Volunteers should understand that from a psychological point of view this act is called a penis complex. This complex is inherent in the homosexual and although the interrogators themselves may be married men with a family it indicates suppressed homosexual tendencies. When the volunteer realises and understands this proven fact he should not have great difficulty in triumphing over his interrogators. He should look upon them as homosexuals with the immunity of the establishment, as people who become sadistic from the homosexual tendencies, which underlie them. "
3. Court Martial - How to deal with touts and other injustices to the cause
This supplies a semblance of a framework for decentralised justice.

Не дуже цікава для 2024 року. Історична частина про боротьбу Ірландії за незалежність варта уваги. Далі - інструкції для бійців ІРА, в яких немає нічого супер цікавого ті інноваційного для сучасної людини, а для воюючих Українців тим паче.
