Facing Forwards: Europe. Solo. No Looking Back.

Rate this book
One summer. One woman. One continent.

Over three months, Lorraine Wilson travelled solo through Europe by train, stopping at 57 destinations in 21 countries and covering 11,500 miles.
Why? Well, the previous five years had seen financial meltdown, heartbreak, bereavement, and poor health. Now with her house sold and all but two suitcases of possessions given away, she was struggling to decide where her life was heading. Being 48, single, childless, and with no home to speak of, it made sense to stop and think. And the best way to do that? Head off into the unknown.

It’s not a conventional travel book, although there are great tales from off the beaten track. It’s not a self-help book, although there is a lot to be learned from travelling alone. It’s also not too serious – sometimes the biggest laughs come from the stickiest situations. In fact, at times it’s clear that she shouldn’t be allowed out alone…

Facing Forwards is the story of a life-changing summer.

NOTE: This is NOT the Lorraine Wilson who writes the Chalet Girl books for Harper Impulse.

I've just finished "Facing Forward" and what a fantastic read it is. Absolutely love Lorraine's humour, her love of dogs and can relate to so much of what she has written. My solo journeys have been so much shorter (and Budapest is the only city I succumbed to one of those tourist buses too!), but I recognised the feeling of adventure, horizon-broadening and the frustration of never being able to save a seat anywhere when you went to the breakfast buffet! Reading this book has given me a major itch now to get back out there and explore some of the European cities I've yet to visit, so over the next few months I'll be planning my solo Euro trip for next year. Thank you, Lorraine!

I did a small amount of solo travelling a couple of years ago, and I would like to do more, so this looked interesting after I read an article about it. It's not what I would usually read, but I found it an interesting and informative read. A few more places have been added to my to-visit list!
One small complaint, it was the kindle version that I read, so maybe the printed book has them, but I could really have done with some pictures along the way.
