Over three months, Lorraine Wilson travelled solo through Europe by train, visiting 57 destinations in 20 countries and covering 11,500 miles.
While life hadn't been unkind, the previous five years had seen financial meltdown, heartbreak, bereavement, and poor health. It was time to stop and think.
She sold her house, gave away all but two suitcases of possessions, and headed off into the unknown.
This is not a conventional travel book, although there are some wonderful destinations to discover. It's not a self-help book, but there are lessons to be learned from travelling alone.
Facing Forwards is the story of one life-changing summer.
I've just finished "Facing Forward" and what a fantastic read it is. Absolutely love Lorraine's humour, her love of dogs and can relate to so much of what she has written. My solo journeys have been so much shorter (and Budapest is the only city I succumbed to one of those tourist buses too!), but I recognised the feeling of adventure, horizon-broadening and the frustration of never being able to save a seat anywhere when you went to the breakfast buffet! Reading this book has given me a major itch now to get back out there and explore some of the European cities I've yet to visit, so over the next few months I'll be planning my solo Euro trip for next year. Thank you, Lorraine!
I did a small amount of solo travelling a couple of years ago, and I would like to do more, so this looked interesting after I read an article about it. It's not what I would usually read, but I found it an interesting and informative read. A few more places have been added to my to-visit list! One small complaint, it was the kindle version that I read, so maybe the printed book has them, but I could really have done with some pictures along the way.
