Hide Away by Iris Johansen picks up where Shadow Play ended.........not that you have to read the previous book.........why??? Because you get LOADS and I mean LOADS of rehash about what happened before!!!! And that rehashing is just one of the things that made this book a beyond DISAPPOINTING read!!!!
 photo ug_zpsmrl5phds.gif
Yes, that's me......as I "plodded" along....skimming and skipping pages and more pages....talk about MONOTOMOUS!!!

Shadow Play was okay..... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... I kept hoping that after that cliffhanger....I would be surprised!! But no, I was not!!

So, we have Jane still searching for lost treasures for the English lord at his castle. Still blowing hot and cold with Caleb. Throw in a drug cartel from somewhere in South America, a young girl who wants to protect Eve Duncan, Eve Duncan who wants to save and protect young said girl named Cara. Add in a bit of paranormal thingies...............and end the story with yet another cliffhanger.............. photo tumblr_mhnli1oZXq1rsw1oio1_500_zpsgqwghetk.gifHell, I want the old Eve Duncan back!!!!

Am I going to read next book? Yes......just please let it be a stunner!!!!

What attracts me to this series are the characters, Eve and her giving faces to skulls, identifying lost and missing children, Margaret and her uncanny intuition and her way with nature, Joe, cop extraordinaire and his love for Eve. But alas, this one was not one of my favorites. Don't really care for the drug cartel storyline which continues from last book and there was way too much talking I this one, overwritten dialogue, repetitive. How many times do we have to hear about how Joe just wants to protect them?

Still there is an interesting personal twist in this one, so will read the next one. My only hope is that after the next one the drug cartel stuff is finished and Eve can go back to sculpting her skulls.

Forensic sculptor, Eve Duncan saved Cara Delaney life in the previous book, SHADOW PLAY, but the threat to her life is not over. Cara and Eve leave for Scotland, where Eve's adoptive daughter Jane MacGurie is looking for a treasure that is said to be buried. But Cara is still in danger and the people after her will stop at nothing to get to her.

The story in HIDE AWAY takes up directly after SHADOW PLAY ended, and it can be confusing for someone who hasn't read the previous book to understand what is going on. Fortunately, you get an explanation to what happened in the previous book early on.

Catching up...

I use to love reading this author.

And…

I enjoyed the character of Eve Duncan, a forensic sculptor whose reconstructions help to identify and bring home many children.

But…

For whatever reason, the stories got a bit formulaic.

So…

When this one was donated to the Little Free Library Shed, I thought maybe I could give the series another chance.

And…

Once I did, I was reminded why I stopped reading it.

Although it is a well-paced thriller with twists and turns to keep the story moving, it is the middle book in a trilogy.

So…

It did what I don’t appreciate. Left readers with a cliffhanger.

For me…

I have no interest in continuing, since I think this is the ultimate betrayal to readers.

Still…

I recognize that some readers may feel differently, and enjoy this kind of storytelling.

So…

The decision to continue is up to you. If you do, start at the beginning.

And…

With this trilogy, that would be Book 19, “Shadow Play.” Book 21, “Night and Day” (the one that follows this one) will hopefully finish the trilogy.

I debated about reading this one as I found the last one so-so. But there were supposed to be some twists for Eve and I decided to give her one last try. I was a little afraid of not being able to remember the last book, but the first 50 pages or so were more or less a re-hash/bridge of the prior book so no problem on refreshing the memory. However, I'm not being pulled into the story and I'm bored.

A the 1/2 way point, I was expecting more to be going on. There were a lot of conversations and mental thought processes, but very little progress into the plot. In fact there is so little progress that you are left wondering if there is any more to the plot than the bad guys are after good guys.

Boredom rules.

The more I read, the more I felt like I was hitting my head against a brick wall. The good guys who all are supposed to have military backgrounds and are basically in their own backyard (you know familiar with the land, etc.) are really just inept. The bad guys find people who have info, torture them for said info that then leads the bad guys to Eve and Cara. Then because the good guys are so clueless, the bad guys are able to get the jump on them. It was so contrived and seemed so fake. Of course the reason they could get the jump on them is that the good guys spent 200+ pages just talking about how everyone was so important to each other and needed to be protected. All talk, no action. As well as pages and pages of redundant boring dialogue. And usually I like dialogue; but not this.

I was constantly amazed that at an abandoned castle ruin, miles from town and sounding pretty isolated had really good cell phone coverage.

Once upon a time, Ms. Johansen could have woven a fabulous tale around the mists and the dreams of the past. But this was not it; it was a far cry from its potential. The story seemed to circle without purpose and then end on a cliffhanger. But the sad reality is that I don't care how it ends.

I gave this two stars, but I was seriously debating about making it 1 star.

Note to self: No more Eve Duncan books. There are way too many good books out there waiting for me.

I can't believe what I read. It's a none story. I wish someone had told me to read the inside jacket and skip it altogether.

Very disappointed with this one. A third of the book done and no forensic sculptor story, but a continuance of the previous book, Shadow Play. I didn't know this is Johansen's format, mini trilogy within the main series.

The unnatural dialogs in the book doesn't help. Eve and Joe came out as rude people, unlikable especially Eve. I know that's not the case. The way they talk to people is just cut and dry. I sure don't feel like helping them.

I always enjoy these books but they are especially perfect on days like today, Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year.

The romance, the action, the characters I wish were my family, the characters I wish I were dating: they all add up to a stress free, good vs evil ride that you can just relax into. You know that the bad guys are going to lose. You know that the women are strong, capable, and intelligent. You know the men are too. You know that there will be drama and death and a bit of the supernatural. In fact, you know pretty much everything important. In most books that would be a deal breaker, but these are my comfort blanket reads and all I want to do is sit back and cheer for my team. The welcome return of Jock and MacDuff made those cheers all the louder, pom poms were added.

Keep em coming Iris!

Ive never read any of the previous books leading up to this one in the Eve Duncan series. After reading this one, I am very tempted now to go back but also to deff move forward in reading all in the series.

I was blown away by the situations, the character development, the meat of the book. Even coming in so late in this, I did not feel I was missing something from before, as the author did a great job of making it seem a stand alone book as she filled in all of the gaps for me.

I am now a new fan of the main character, Eve Duncan. She is strong, fun, intelligent and independent. So many of the other people in this book pulled at my heart strings as well! Cara, Jock and Quinn. I felt like I was watching a movie, as it all played out so well in my mind from the words written. This is a great series and I intend on sticking around for more!

Hide Away is the 20th novel in Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series. And to be completely honest, this review is kinda hard for me to write. I have read EVERY Eve Duncan book and (lately) I have found them to be repetitive, predictable, and just... kind of annoying. And by annoying, I mean I am getting really annoyed with Eve as more "time" goes by. I find her becoming more and more selfish and self-destructive as each book passes. I don't think that she gives ANY regard for her family. Eve just does what she wants and expects Joe and Jane to drop everything and protect her.

Will I continue to read Eve Duncan books...?? Yes, bbbbuuutttttt only because I've invested in the previous 20 books. But I WISH Ms. Johansen would switch her focus on another character (a.k.a Jane!!).

RATING: 2 out of 5

Another great read from the Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn series that once again brings in some old favorite characters such as Jane McGuire, McDuff, Seth Caleb and more this time in search of treasure and in a race to save a little girl's life. It is actually a continuation of the last book in the series and this one leaves off at a critical point so you absolutely must read the next book to find out what happens. While I love this series, there have been several books lately that leave off at an obvious cliff hanger so you know you are going to need to read the book. I'd call the author diabolically wicked for doing that, but since I love the series I'll just say "well played" to her while I anxiously await my turn for the next book in the series.

Another excellent addition to the Eve Duncan series. I simply loved Cara and her devotion (crush) on Jock was so sweet and you could really see the effect she had on him. And I myself continue to crush on Seth Caleb. How Jane is able to keep pushing him away is simply mystifying.

I look forward to the conclusion of this mini-trilogy within the Eve Duncan series. I want to know how Jock saves Cara because I'm convinced it's going to come down to him saving Cara.

I love kindle books. However, not with Iris Johansen's books. Let me explain. When reading a print book, you know how many pages you have left. In a kindle book, I raise the font size, so not every page on the screen equals a page in the book. You just don't know when the ending is coming. When reading Hide Away, like most of her books, you get really into the story and it builds and builds, then BAM, the book has ended and you find yourself aggravated because the book was so excellent and there was no ending.

Come on! write your next book.

Hide Away was an extreme disappointment. When I finished the book, the one thought I had was it was pointless. Hide Away picks up where Shadow Play ended. I was hoping that Cara's story would be completed in this novel. Unfortunately, it was not. We are left with another cliffhanger. I will not be reading the next book. Hide Away contains guns, violence (extreme), machete, IED's, and much more. There is one surprise or twist that some people will not see coming (unless you paid attention close attention to the clues). I just did not enjoy Hide Away. I give Hide Away 3 out of 5 stars. It is okay, but not great. I will poHide Away by Iris Johansen picks up where Shadow Play ends. Eve Duncan is in the hospital after killing Walsh who was after Cara. Eve and Joe will do anything they can to protect Cara from Salazar. Salazar is determined to kill Cara to get even with her father, Juan Castino. Castino is the kingpin of a drug cartel in Mexico City. Salazar already had Cara’s sister, Jenny murdered as well as their caretaker, Elena Pasquez. After Eve is released from the hospital, they head home to Atlanta. They soon discover that Salazar has a new assassin, Ramon Franco on their tail. Eve and Cara book a private plane and head to Scotland. Jane MacGuire, Eve’s adopted daughter, has accepted a job Lord John MacDuff, Earl of Cannaught (and a Laird). MacDuff has been trying to get Jane to Cira’s treasure for years. Jane has finally agreed (she had dreams of Cira as a teenager). Eve and Cara will hide out in Scotland with MacDuff, Jane, Jock Gavin, and Seth Caleb. But what do they do what Franco and Salazar pick up their trail? What will these people do to keep Cara safe?

Hide Away was an extreme disappointment. When I finished the book, the one thought I had was it was pointless (the book). If you have not read Shadow Play, you can catch up (for the most part) in Hide Away (it does rehash what happened in Shadow Play). I was hoping that Cara's story would be completed in this novel. Unfortunately, it was not. We are left with another cliffhanger. I will not be reading the next book (except maybe to look at in a bookstore to see how it ends). Hide Away contains guns, violence (extreme), machete, IED's, and much more. There is one surprise or twist that some people will not see coming (unless you paid attention close attention to the clues). I just did not enjoy Hide Away (but that is just me). I give Hide Away 3 out of 5 stars. It is okay, but not great (I wanted a gripping suspense thriller). The writing did not flow well. It jumped around. The pace was good, but I just did not feel that we gained any ground in this book.

Hide Away is the twentieth book in the series by Iris Johansen featuring forensic sculptor Eve Duncan. I had not read any books up until the previous in this series, Shadow Play, which I really loved. Shadow Play is actually the beginning to this little bit of the series where Eve is given a skull of a murdered young girl to sculpt to try to solve her murder.

After the end of Shadow Play Eve and Joe vow to protect young Cara Delaney who was the sister of the girl Eve was investigating. Cara has been put in the middle of feuding drug cartels and has been chased for the last several years. With the cartels getting close Eve heads to the remote Scottish Highlands to hide out with Jane MacGuire.

I didn't quite enjoy Hide Away as much as I did with my first attempt at Iris Johansen's work. Shadow Play had a bit more of the paranormal/supernatural element to it while investigating the murder of the young girl Eve had sculpted. Plus with this continuing on with the same case somewhat there wasn't any of the forensic details or investigation type of story line to it that got me hooked in the first book.

What I really felt like with Hide Away was the middle of the story kind of slowness that you get with a long read since this particular plot is being carried on through at least three books. Shadow Play began the series to get a reader hooked in and Hide Away continues along the same story but there was not really an ending to anything in this installment obviously leading into a third book with the same case. I would definitely like to find out how it all works out but I have to admit I was a bit let down with this read just because it was still all up in the air.

Overall, 3.5 stars for Hide Away. Still good writing and I've gotten to like these characters but I would have preferred more happening in this one.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

iris johansen never ceases to amaze me how after all these years and so many books later how she still is one of the best writers out their and hide away is no exception. hide away has the ever loved eve duncan involved in a good vs evil storyline cara the girl who eve and joe saved had to go on the run with eve before the man who had ordered her and her sister to be killed years ago and the greving mother who was actually the cold hearted bitch who helped salazar to kidnap her own children. find them and silence them forever. besides salazar, and natalie the childrens mother theirs ramon a assassin for hire whos one of the most twisted killers ive read about. we also get to revisit with some of my all time favorite characters from the eve duncan series. theirs macduff who's willing to protect eve and cara for a price he wants jane to help him to find cira's treasure once and for all. jock's back too macduff's ever present shadow and last but not lease one of my favorite characters of all time the dark and yummie caleb and the heat between him and jane is burning hotter then ever before. as the bodies pile up and the stakes get higher and higher. the twists and turns and a ending that i didnt see coming is only the beginning of this story.

Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn are in danger again. When will these two have a normal life? In this installment, Eve and Joe are attempting to protect Cara Delaney, a young violin player whose life is in mortal danger (is there ever any other kind of danger?). They travel to Scotland where Eve's adopted daughter is currently looking for hidden treasure (is there any other kind?). There they have to stay smarter than those hunting Cara and Eve.

For me, this book was okay not great. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it either. There is some suspense, but you know who the bad guys are from the start. It wasn't a nail biter or a page turner for me. There was some suspense but I found it to be minimal. I think die hard Johansen fans will enjoy this book. I find I like a little more mystery.

Taking a break from this series after Silencing Eve definitely rejuvenated my ability to enjoy Hide Away. Not reading those intervening titles also kept me from reading about the horrible demise of one of my very favorite characters, mentioned in this current entry.

Eve Duncan has become my reading fan's equivalent of a beloved binky from childhood: It offers nostalgic comfort even though it barely resembles its original state when it was new.

[observation: "She moistened her lips." is used for Eve, Cara, and Jane multiple times. Like cilantro for foodies, the word moist and its derivatives are a like it or hate it issue for many readers. On pg.108 an em-dash instead of ellipsis is used to indicate an ongoing conversation, not an abrupt halt. Other em-dash/ellipsis incidents throughout. (I know! It's a symptom of my em-dash vs. ellipsis sickness.;-)]

"Eve lies in a well-guarded hospital room in Carmel, California. But she and Joe Quinn have sworn to protect an innocent young girl, Cara Delaney, whose enemies are getting closer by the hour. Weighing her own health against Cara’s safety, Eve decides they must disappear—and so she turns to her daughter, Jane MacGuire, for an unexpected solution.
DESPERATE MEASURES
After years of resistance, Jane has finally succumbed to the inevitable: John MacDuff’s insistent plea to track down a treasure presumed buried in Scotland. The remote mountains should be a perfect hiding place for Eve and Cara, but they soon realize there is nowhere distant enough from the ruthless predators who are on their trail."

There really wasn't a need to read the first book, considering how much is rehashed repeatedly in the second starting with page one. I get that these books are a series and not everyone is going to read them in order, but Ms. Johansen takes entire pages rehashing old books, storylines, and even just the basics.
It would also be nice if she was a little consistent with ages.

I haven’t enjoyed these books since she started this werewolf whatever crap in them. These books used to be so great with the sculpting aspects and how connected eve got to the cases. Her and Joe are just annoying twits with a whole lot of baggage that makes it unbelievable they could be in the professions they are supposed to be in.

I never intend to read another book by this author.

The plot was unconvincing, the ease with which their hiding place was found was unrealistic, the number of victims who died because of being information sources to their whereabouts was depressing; the characters were unbelievable; the conversation was repetitive.

In addition, the author tries unsuccessfully to incorporate some modern twists . However, she either does not know what she is talking about or she assumes that the reader does. So someone who knows nothing about mind control/super soldiers would not understand the problems, abilities and personality problems of one of the characters.

Much of the plot revolves around being led by dreams which involve conversations with the dead, both recently dead and characters from the establishment of the castle. It also involves feelings from the land that some of the characters experience. And a person who senses and can change people's blood flow.

However, this information is not presented scientifically. Dreams can involve quantum physics in which a person picks up the vibrations of previous experiences which are recorded in matter, thus actually watching the experience in the tv screen of the brain. Or these vibrations can become holographic images. But these dreams would not be capable of passing on information or giving advice. They are simply recordings of past events (such as the location of the treasure). But these dreams can also be encounters with people from Heaven (rare, and controlled by God), or apparitions resembling actual people (caused by demons, when a person opens a door spiritually to these apparitions). So the information provided in dreams in this way can be correct or incorrect. Or the dreams can result from the person's subconscious mulling over a problem and then dreaming about it at night. In some cases, the dream is wildly unrealistic. In some cases, it is a solution. Of course, it can also be a "pizza dream".

But the author does not develop this theme sufficiently.

Also the strange feelings of music from the land, and sensing the changes of the music according to the topography and vegetation are not really that strange. In today's scientific world, the different frequencies of vegetation and landforms are easily measured and can be compared with the frequencies of healthy, mentally balanced humans as well as stressed, dysfunctional humans. But not enough information was given to understand exactly the cause and effect of the environment on the characters.

Physiological control as a result of radio waves in modern warfare (DARPA, etc.) is easily understood with today's scientific knowledge. However, the author makes the influencing of blood flow by an external force seem rather wacky, instead of a result of talents that some super soldiers have been developing whether through military mind control experiments, transhuman genetic engineering, or remote sensing.

If the author wished to introduce these themes, she should have provided the reader with enough detail to understand rather than thinking that perhaps the author was writing science fiction.

I couldn't decide what this author was trying to do unless it was to write a crime soap opera.

And of course, the story ended with a bigger problem than it started with, meaning readers will need to wait for the next installment. Except this isn't 24, and people will not wait for the next in the series.

St. Martin's Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Hide Away, in exchange for an honest review.

A continuation of Shadow Play, Hide Away picks up where the aforementioned book leaves off. 11 year old Cara Delaney is saved by Eve, but she is still to be a pawn in a deadly game between two cartels. In an effort to protect the child and find some relative safety and tranquility, Eve takes Cara and meets up with Jane in the Scottish Highlands. Will they be able to stay safe or will danger follow them to the ends of the Earth?

Hide Away has the same elements as all of the previous Eve Duncan books: Eve ends up in danger, whether it be that she is the original target or she becomes involved and makes trouble find her, she runs away from the danger, and her loved ones come to her rescue. The storylines and the villains have blurred into one big, anonymous mass, until I no longer know or care who the perpetrators are. I wish that there was more originality in these stories, as they were early on in the series. My favorite aspect in the Eve Duncan character is her ability to sculpt and give life back to the victims. This is at the crux of her character, but the focus has been taken away from this very important part of Eve's life. Hide Away was a good book, but not particularly memorable. As the cliffhanger ending suggests, there will be another book in this series. My only reason for continuing on with these books is to find out where the author will take this set of characters into the future.

5 Stars. Eve Duncan is back in her 19th novel. Sit back, relax, order delivery for supper, and get ready for another thrilling ride. 11 year old Cara Delaney is the daughter of a rival drug gang leader, whose life is in danger from another drug lord who wants the girl dead. Eve Duncan and former FBI agent Joe Quinn, bring Cara to Atlanta, where they can protect her. After they get to Atlanta, Joe feels they should hide the girl better, so Eve decides to take her to Scotland, where she can also see her daughter. Joe realizes that even across the pond, Eve and Cara isn’t safe, so the chase begins to catch the bad guys and hope it’s not too late to save Eve and Cara.

Eve is such a strong, intelligent woman and is one you can look up to as well as depend on her to save the day. Even if you haven’t read any of the other books in this series, you’re not feeling lost or confused. The focuses of each of the books are the task at hand, not referencing other characters in past books, with a lot of characters that you don’t know. This is another fast pace, page turning book, which you find yourself reading until the last page, or the wee hours of the morning.

Iris Johansen knows how to keep the reader involved in the story, spine chilling, and thrill of chase. Readers are able to connect with the main characters, dislike the bad guys and cheer for the underdog. With a juicy, spicy, intense plot , readers are sure to enjoy this latest adventure with Eve Duncan.

This is a 4.5 star rating for me. The book was everything you need in a good complex murder mystery. Eve Duncan is back recovering from her last book ,in trying to save Cara. She is in the hospital with her love, Joe, and Cara seems safe for the moment . Then after an attempt again , on Cara in the hospital waiting room ,Joe checks out eve and wants her at their home. It is a beautiful and secure home , but all to soon people are firing at them , and rig their car to blow. Cara is the kidnapped daughter , of a bad Mexican cartel leader. She is also the center of an international investigation, since the remains of her sister have been found. Jane ,who is Eve' s adopted grown daughter, demands they join her in Scotland to be safe, leaving Joe in the states to leave a false trail, and to keep gathering information. This book keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can read them. Time is against Joe as as he tries to get everything he needs finished , and still save Jane, Cara, and Eve. Great fight scenes, lots of suspense, running and hiding. It did not get 5 stars because , again it is a cliff hanger. The people after that little girl will make your skin crawl, and more surprises are not listed, for the next readers enjoyment..No spoiler here ! Please hurry with the next book.

Iris Johansen is one of my auto-buy authors. Hide Away is the twentieth novel in the Eve Duncan series and believe me, these characters are still going strong!

Eve saved a child's life against a merciless drug cartel in the previous book, Shadow Play, and is now trying to protect her against her evil despot of a father and those who wish to see him dead.

They return to Scotland, reuniting with Eve's adopted daughter, Jane McGuire, McDuff and Seth Caleb. These books are multi-dimensional and there are several plotlines running together, but the author does a commendable job of keeping the reader in the loop without a ton of backstory.

The action is fast-paced, emotions run high, and the pages fly!

I give Hide Away 4.5 lovely kisses- I'm a fan!

I have been a fan of Iris Johansen for decades and she did not fail me in her latest novel, Hide Away. In spite of a busy schedule I couldn't put it down and pulled a couple all nighters to read it.
Eve Duncan is at her best in reaching out to help others in the US and abroad. She takes he talents abroad and meets with some of her previous contacts. In Hide Away, it's meeting old friends once more.
I look forward to seeing how things progress with Joe and Cara. It's always a pleasure to see the fey Jane.
After Hide Away, I anticipate the follow up. Please bring it out soon.
I received Hide Away through goodreads.

Why didn't Johansen retire this series long ago? It has become very lame and extremely boring. She should have let it die a dignified death, but she has turned what was was an enjoyable series into a caricature of itself. I have read every book in the series up to and including, #18...Silencing Eve...and the last few books in the series were so silly and annoying, I vowed not to read another. Now she is up to #20? I will not read it or #19, Shadow Play. Enough is enough Johansen!
