Soul Care: 7 Transformational Principles for a Healthy Soul

Rate this book
Brokenness grasps for the soul of humanity. We are broken body, soul, and spirit, and we need the healing touch of Jesus. "Soul Care" explores seven principles that are profound healing tools of God: securing your identity, repentance, breaking family sin patterns, forgiving others, healing wounds, overcoming fears, and deliverance.

Dr. Rob Reimer challenges readers to engage in an interactive, roll-up-your-sleeves and get messy process -- a journey of self-reflection, Holy Spirit inspiration, deep wrestling, and surrender. It is a process of discovering yourself in true community and discovering God as He pierces through the layers of your heart.

Life change is hard. But these principles, when packaged together and lived out, can lead to lasting transformation, freedom, and a healthy soul. "Soul Care" encourages you to gather a small group of comrades in arms, read and process together, open your souls to one another, access the presence and power of God together, and journey together into the freedom and fullness of Christ.

This is not a good book. A scatter-gun of life-hacks is always going to hit a few marks, especially in the author's resonant demographic, and I'm genuinely happy for those who needed this book to prompt them to deal with some stuff. The book does contain truisms about prayerful reflection, honest confession, and Scripture meditation. However, these are so caked in spiritualized pseudo-psychology that they are liable to do as much harm as good -- especially for those already enslaved by introspective soul-scrubbing or an ethos of conflict-avoidant forgiveness. The worst of it, for me, is that Soul Care is so lacking an ecclesiology that it also truncates christology, lending itself to the perpetuation of a christianity that collapses into therapeutic self-assurance.

This book is super odd. The book is certainly based on foundational biblical truths of Jesus as the messiah and our need for salvation from our sin, but everything else is kinda off. While the author does make these claims, I don’t believe the stories and steps outlined in the book really show these biblical truths. The book seems to be largely pseudo-psychology with Christian flairs and ideas. The way faith and God’s healing power is described in the book I believe to be unscriptural, almost creating a prosperity theology. It creates this idea that God has faith or healing you can tap into and build yourself up with these questions and exercises that do center on Jesus, but the substance is not about God, it is about us performing. It is right enough that I can say it is about Jesus, but certainly wrong enough to say I don’t think this book is entirely biblical, specifically with the way it views faith.

There is a lot of healing and signs and wonders stuff as well, which I do have doubts about, but more so because the writing makes it seem like psychology voodoo, not God’s sovereign hand.

There were some redeeming qualities! The questions asked at the end of the chapters and throughout were really helpful for me! I thought this was the best part by far. Much of the ideas talked about are still real and relevant ideas that need to be explored through prayer and discernment, and I would encourage anyone to walk through the questions the book asks throughout.

Soul care goes much further and deeper than psychology’s behavior modification as well as some typical discipleship models and spiritual formation strategies. Soul care deals with the heart as Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Heart work is hard work. Yet as you apply Rob Reimer’s seven real-life, time-tested, battle-won principles, you will be changed and Jesus will be more real to you. You will enter a new level of spiritual freedom, care, and health with yourself, God, and others.

Life is a mess. People are broken. Especially for our millennial generation, Rob Reimer provides a manual for deep healing and transformation through Christ.

The chapter on Deliverance did me in on this book. I liked a lot of the book. The chapter on Fear was very good but I can't give this a good rating because the chapter on Deliverance is not scriptural. I don't care what personal claims someone has, if they do not line up with God's word then they are wrong. In this case it is quite possible the "Christians" he has gotten demons to undrape themselves from are not true believers at all or there is something else happening. Whatever the case, a Christian does NOT need deliverance from demons. He/she has been delivered. They are indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God and although we can be attacked by Satan we fight him by putting on the full armor of God NOT by being delivered. There is absolutely no evidence of a Christian Believer in the New Testament being delivered by other believers, there are however many verses in support of the fact that God has rescued us from all the powers of darkness.

As for the idea of being cursed - we are a new creation in Christ the day we become a believer.

Colossians 1:13 -14 -He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins

1 John 2:13-I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because byou have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.

1 John 4:4 - You are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

1 John 5:18 - We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was 1born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

1 Peter 1:3 - who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Corinthians 6:19 -Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? and you are not your own.

Romans 8:39 - For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 6:10 -12- Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For
our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers,
against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in
the heavenly places.

2 Timothy 4:18-
The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen

This book is DEEP!

I would recommend this for everyone. Buy a paper version so you can highlight and keep. You will find this book speaks to you differently through each season of life. I'm gonna try and re-read it once a year.

I would also recommend journaling through the end of each chapter. Go in with an open mind and heart you will be shocked what comes out on paper. I would also recommend reading it with someone you can trust to share some of your discoveries with. It's overwhelming in some parts and very emotional. You might need someone to sit and just cry with.

“The things we deny about ourselves are the very things that deny us from the fullness of God”

I think this book should be a must read for every believer. It requires you to really dig deep and face some hard things but it is so worth it! I will definitely be revisiting this for many years to come.

I had a friend recommend this book to me and then later in the semester lead a talking on it. The talking was super helpful because it was based on the end where it talks about spiritual deliverance.

But would say this book is good whether it’s before your healing journey, during, or at the close/finish of it. It is also a great book to come back to when you need to.

I liked how the book gave words to feelings or things I’ve struggled with, and opened my eyes to things I never even would have thought of.

The book does not do the “transformative” work, it simply leads you to Jesus for him to do it. The book works as a step/ list on where to allow the Lord to move in your life.

The author is also relatable, funny, and open about his own struggles. And his stories are very inspiring and allow you to reflect.

Would def recommend!!!!

Soul Care: What does that mean? This book does a great job of helping you think and process through your body, soul, and spirit to help you better understand who God has created you to be.

The book discusses 7 different principles to help you better understand how God has uniquely created you and how different experiences and parts of life shape you into who you are today. The author fills the book with scripture references to emphasize his points. At the end of each chapter there are questions to help you critically think through what you just read. This is a great tool for self-reflection or to do with a group of trusted friends.

The 7 principles are:
-       Identity
-       Repentance
-       Overcoming family sin patterns
-       Forgiveness
-       Healing wounds
-       Overcoming fears
-       Deliverance

This book is directed towards someone over 18 and is a Christian.

Most likely the best spiritual book I’ve ever read. Seriously, everyone needs to read this. Dr. Reimer’s articulation of the cross, freedom, his theology of the soul, are all beautiful and straightforward. Do yourself a favour and read this ASAP.

This book by Dr. Rob Reimer is truly transformational. It brings insight into various areas of our lives; whether it is generational traumas and sin patterns, hurt, ego, pride, or whatever it may be that is holding us back. This book dives into so many categories of our lives that may be holding us back. It allows us to realize at first who our identity is in, then follows up with the remaining principles.

I am so glad I was recommended this book. I knew from the moment this book was brought up, that I would need to read it. It is the first book I completed within two weeks of receiving it. It motivates me to apply the principles in my life not only to help myself, but the people around me. This is the goal. Spread the Light!

5 ⭐️ This book has been eye opening and soul transformative for me. This book is for any Christian wishing to grow in their spiritual maturity. Dr. Reiner gives us 7 principles to work towards a healthy & transformed soul. He gives an honest look at scripture regarding demons. Who they are, why they are, and how to be free. This book will bring freedom, healing, & growth to many.

Excellent book. Transformational in scope. I’m going to read it again and again. Would also make a great small group Bible study. The discussions would be so valuable.

Updated: just read this a second time through more slowly and took notes - 20 pages of notes. These principles are weighty and important and deserve the work required for attaining and completing them.

As a result of soul care I can honestly tell you that I believe my identity is truly in Christ. I have been set free from the lies that I believed as a result of rejection from my early teenage years. I have absolutely forgiven every person that has ever harmed me and have experienced a level of forgiveness from my Father for those I have harmed. I have no enemies in my life today. I have experienced healing from three specific traumatic events that occurred between the ages of eleven and eighteen. I have been set free from the demonic strongholds that held me captive. I experienced this initial freedom in 2015, three years later I have taken many women through this process. Because of allowing God to heal those deep wounds I once had I have been able to give Him access to the deepest recesses of my soul, through this I continue to learn more and more about myself and am able to recognize my own sin and immediately take ownership of it. I am able to recognize when something triggers an old wound in myself and am able to stand in the freedom that He has given me, honestly if an old wound is triggered I am able to identify the identity lie within moments.
I could say so much more! I will close with stating the most important thing that soul care did for me was enable me to hear my Father's voice, it enabled me to cultivate an intimate relationship with Him and to be used to set others free.

God has a preferred future He planned for each of us and this book helps us to overcome so that we can start living out the future God wants for His children. As God promised in Jeremiah 29:11-14 -

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

This book brings you through a process of exposing where your heart has been hardened by life. It will help bring restoration from hurt and trauma, and healing for wounds. It will guide you into freedom from strongholds that prevent you from growing spiritually. It will motivate you to seek God through spiritual disciplines that will help you develop a closer, more intimate relationship with Him. It will ultimately allow God to bring you back from the place of exile where your old life had driven you and to the original future He had planned for you.

I've read this book four times. I highly recommend it to anyone ready to throw off all that is hindering them from living life to the full in Jesus Christ.

This is great book if you are truly in a stage of life where you want to understand patterns that you or your family may be repeating and are ready to truly break free. This is a book you can continue to use time and time again. I’ve seen some reviews with not so great of reviews saying this is not a Bible study and more of a therapy book. Perhaps it was represented wrongly by the particular group or church. The book itself doesn’t identify itself as a Bible study but truly what it is. A SOUL CARE BOOk. please keep in mind that this book calls to look honestly and deeply within. It talks about living in full honesty with people you trust. I know that as a society we are guarded about our feelings and the things we may struggle with. This book addressed that and calls for openness. The author admits that not every single person in your life should or have access to your most intimate details but he also points out that hiding in our sin or family sin patters is what damaged our souls and therefore translates to your emotions and way of being. Not a book for someone who isn’t willing to do the work and go deep. Truly a book for those who are wanting to change but actually work on the root of the problem rather than just practicing behavior modification. I have recommended this book to Christian and non Christian’s. I truly believe that how helpful this book is.

Life changing

I seldom post reviews, but was compelled to write one about this book. If you’ve ever wondered why so many professing Christians, pastors and parishioners alike (include yourself in either category), do not live according to their calling, READ THIS BOOK. “When it comes to the soul, what you DON’T know can hurt you” and others around you, asserts Rob Reimer.

Like a divinely-appointed surgeon with a precision that can only be empowered by God, Reimer takes readers on a journey to heal their souls from latent wounds using 7 principals from the Bible, as well as his 30+ years of experience as a pastor and pioneer in the work of deliverance.

Most of us deem ourselves to be “healthy” and therefore non-candidates for this type of “self-help.” BUT for those of us who DARE to dig beneath the surface of our happy facades, we might find that our fear, anger, self-deprecating thoughts, and even depression actually have roots. These roots must and can be eradicated using soul care principles. The author recommends completing this book in a church-based small group. I agree and believe you will get the most out of this book/study being transparent with God, yourself and others.

This book is truly life-changing!

This book is full of testimonies by the author. I’m always fascinated by the work of the Holy Spirit in another’s life. This book provides rich examples of how God is intimately involved in our heart, mind and emotions. We have only to respond and follow His leading every day.

I especially love his commitment to the Word of God and Jesus being in complete control. This showed that the author wasn’t an experience driven Christian, but one who sincerely wants to see believers set free from anything that would hold them back.

He talks at length about forgiveness towards those who have hurt you and actually asking God to bless them. This frees us from bitterness and unforgiveness. Of course, don’t let this brief review convince you—read the book. Give your soul a retreat by caring for it with the help of the Holy Spirit. He longs to bring the church to a place of health in order to draw the hurting and lost into genuine relationship with Jesus.

This is an excellent, must read book for spiritual growth and health. My husband and I read, discussed, and prayed our way through it together.

It focuses on seven Soul Care Principles: Identity in Christ, Repentance, Overcoming Family Sin Patterns, Forgiveness, Healing Wounds, Overcoming Fears, and Deliverance.

I believe it's really powerful for lay people, pastors, and Christian Therapists. It's a very powerful tool and a lifestyle commitment. This book requires work. I believe it is worth it as we are to co-labor with Christ, be Doers of the Word, and we are to walk as heirs in His power, for His glory!

My hubby and I leave tomorrow to attend his 3-day Soul Care conference. I'm so excited! May God move mightily through this ministry. God bless Dr. Reimer, all his staff, and all those who read this book.

This book has changed my life forever. I have read it multiple times. Soul care is a book full of divine revelations, profound insights and heartfelt reflections, it guides readers to encounter the healing touch of Jesus that leads to spiritual renewal and a complete transformed life. Through Dr. Rob Reimer words, I have found so easy to love God and love others well, I have embraced healing and restoration, and a renewed sense of purpose in my faith journey. I have encountered the tender love of Jesus so many times through these pages and that is just priceless.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, no matter your background or experiences in life, you will absolutely love it.

I first went through Soul Care in a group setting (co-ed) in 2018. Rob's principles changed my life and I realized I needed to develop a small triad group and found three solid believers who wanted the same thing.. It was one of the best decisions I've made in my journey with God. As a result, much freedom was found and gained in my life. Since then, I have been facilitating 15 week Soul Care classes for men twice a year.
I'm not a teacher, I'm not a preacher and I'm not a motivational speaker. But finding my identity in Christ and finally living a life without secrets has given me the courage to be transparent with others. This freedom has become contagious and I am seeing both men and women being set free.
Thanks be to God for the vision He has given you Rob and for your obedience to pass it on
Truly inspirational!

Dr. Rob Reimer goes in-depth into seven principles for a healthy soul.

1. Have your identity rooted in Christ.
2. Practice repentance and walk in the light
3. Overcome family sin patterns
4. Forgive others
5. Go to Jesus for healing
6. Conquer your fears
7. Break the demonic strongholds of the enemy

Having a group to discuss this book with was very helpful. The seventh principle was the most challenging for me as the author talked about demonic oppression in a way that I have not had much experience with. I am still mulling over that chapter, but the rest of the book was quite helpful. At times I felt that the author relied too heavily on his own experience rather than Scripture. Good but I probably won’t be recommending it.

I have so many good things to say about this book. God used it in such a sweet way in a season where there has been many different sufferings. Over and over i was reminded that God is on this journey with us to know his presence more and not about fixing us. I could go on. He wants us to unpack the things in our lives way more than we want to. I am learning more and more that how I feel even physically God can be telling me something. So many places in scripture even those that were physically sick, God wanted to get to the root problem of their heart. Man is he doing that in me through physical pain. Highly recommend.

It’s truly life-changing and healing, providing a roadmap for personal growth and emotional restoration. The book is well-organized and thoughtfully written, with reflective questions and practical exercises that make it deeply engaging.

If you commit to the process, it can help you confront and heal from past traumas that have unconsciously shaped your personality. It reshapes how you process pain and challenges in life, ultimately leading to greater peace and happiness. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking deeper emotional and spiritual healing.

I''m currently reading this book and this is hands down one of my favorite Christian books. It felt as though I sat with the author like I would with a mental health therapist but for my soul. It helps me to be introspective and reflective of why I operate the way I do. He doesn't tell you just "stop" sinning but how to repent and allow Jesus to get at the root of the sin and the lies we believe. I truly recommend for anyone that is desiring to allow God to heal in certain seasons in your life where you need refinement. It was a phenomenal read!

"If we are going to experience true transformation, we must deal with issues of the heart and not simply external behaviours"

This book is about 7 transformational principles for a healthy soul. It is about being honest with ourselves and our sin, and then walking in the freedom that Christ offers. I was challenged and encouraged to pursue greater depth in my walk with the Lord, in the midst of my "stuff", to experience the deep healing that He desires to give us.
