Bryce Roberts is a young author living in Park City, UT. His first novel, Claervont Captive, was published in August of 2015, and in August of 2016 he published its sequel, Claervont's Cost.
In 2013, he began to develop his interest in writing, which led him to write two different novels, both of which remain unpublished. In the summer of 2014, he began work on what would become his first published book, Claervont Captive.
Bryce loves to write stories, and he enjoys bringing readers along with him as he experiences adventures that would otherwise be impossible for him. He and his wife, Savanna, live in a tiny house on wheels with their cat, Queso.
A refreshing and interesting foray into medievalist fiction. The plot is easily the strongest point of the book, avoiding many of the usual tropes and providing a truly fresh and exciting take on a genre that is all-too-often rather dry and derivative.
The story moves quickly, avoiding lingering in place. This is partially a good thing - it shifts the focus directly to the undeniably excellent plot - but also the one notable weak point: at times, the atmosphere of the story feels thin and under-developed. The well-developed narrative provides an adequate offset for this shortcoming, however, and where length requirements force a trade between narrative and atmospheric development, the reader generally feels like the winner in the trade.
In addition, there is a strong moral, but it is subtly and deftly presented: the moral is always shown, rather than explicitly stated. Evil is presented frankly, without being gratuitous or gratuitously sensationalized (both problems common to similar books), and each character's motivations are clear and comprehensible, even when they choose to do wrong. The net effect is that although the novel is pure, unadulterated fun to read, it is not without merit as something more than pure diversion.
In short, this is one of the better recent books I've read, and is well worth the read. It is the first in a proposed series, so we can hope to enjoy similar offerings in the future.
I love this book! I was hooked as soon as I started reading it as I finished it faster than you can say Claervont. Great story and numerous plot twists always keeping you on the edge of your seat! One thing I recommend you do before you read this book is be sure you are done with your school, because you won't be able to put the book down!
Claervont Captive by Bryce Roberts is an amazing read, one I finished in nearly one sitting! The book tells the story of Michal, a young man who must sort through the lies to find the truth, and understand the true meaning of loyalty. If you enjoy historical novels, compelling characters, and a powerful message, this book is for you!
Roberts does a great job painting the world the characters are in. From descriptions of the times to descriptions of the fights, not a detail goes unnoticed. The story is immersive, and I could picture everything about it. It was sometimes a surprise to find I was still sitting in my room!
But even though the description is great, it doesn't overpower the characters. The pages of Claervont are filled with funny, brave, alive, and sometimes heart-breakingly real people. They bring the story to life, giving us someone to cry with when the story goes wrong, and someone to cheer with when the victories come.
The message and themes of the story are powerful and thought-provoking as well, leaving me to consider the novel after I reached the end. The book is studded with one-liners, some of them just plain funny, others enough to make you stop and think.
The one thing I would say to keep in mind with this book is that it is a story of war (just look at the cover! he's holding a sword for good reason). Armies battle, people are hurt, people die. A pg-13 book for sure :)
Claervont Captive is a fantastic debut novel from Roberts. From the setting, to the characters, to the themes, Claervont is well worth the journey. I can't wait for the sequel!!
This book had me hooked beginning to end, and I could not put it down. Filled with interesting characters, plot twists, honor, courage, betrayal, and chivalry, the characters never stay in one place very long and always manage to find themselves faced with conflict on every page. Each character has its own motive, personality, and background, giving every character much depth. The story flows smoothly, and no plot twists were too abrupt or too absurd, so the plot felt very believable. I loved this book so much. The characters were believable and the plot developments were compelling. I finished the book wishing for more, and so, I highly recommend this book.
In Claervont Captive, the reader follows the thrilling tale of Michal as he struggles with betrayal and lies. Thanks to the descriptive writing and unforeseen plot twists by Roberts, a story is created that is in itself legendary. You will empathize with Michal through all of his failings and misfortune, and rejoice in his moments of victory. In short, this book is an incredible tale that will leave you wanting more once you finish!
It had me captured from the first few pages, and I was reluctant to put it down throughout the story. One of the things I liked about this book is that as questions were raised, the answers were concealed well enough so you didn't figure things out before the characters did.
This is a very good read, and I wish that the world had more literature like this on the shelves. The characters are clearly defined and believable with a good plot that progresses as fast as you can read it Probably a book for older readers, due to the fighting and blood, but I would still recommend it.
I loved this book. I noticed that others are commenting on how quickly they read it; I prefer books that take a while to read, and for me, this book met that requirement! The action in Claervont Captive is intense, and the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat. Battles are fought! Loyalties are tested! Shirts are torn! This book is fantastic. I look forward to future books by Bryce Roberts!
Claervont Captive is a well-written book with a well-developed plot and good characterization. Michal is well-developed in the story and brings out qualities you would expect to find in a young man. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone looking for an easy-to-read book with an interesting storyline.
Bryce Roberts does an incredible job with this novel. His characters are incredibly realistic and show great emotion. This book is sure to keep you captivated with all of the plot twists. An excellent piece of writing!
Claervont Captive Fell short of my expectations in some ways. In other ways, however, it exceeded them. This book was a gem. The characters were imperfectly human, unlike many books I read where the heroes can do no wrong. I highly recommend it.
Claervont Captive is a suspenseful ride through the twists, turns, ups and downs of young Michal’s life. The plot is great and the characters are masterfully developed. I could hardly put this book down! Claervont Captive is more than worth the read.
