For the living, the dead, and the people stuck somewhere in between, Heron Creek has become a battleground. Graciela Harper might be new seeing ghosts, fighting curses, and just living with her old friends again, but there’s no doubt she’s on the front lines—and overwhelmed.
Leo and Mel have been arrested. Amelia teeters on the edge of a deep depression that could cost her her child. Beau, her boyfriend who might not quite be her boyfriend anymore, is breaking her heart.
None of that will matter if Gracie can’t figure out how to break the hundreds year old curse on the male line of her family. She knows she needs to focus on that, but with the future of one of South Carolina’s oldest and most prestigious families hanging in the balance, she’s tempted to try to save them, too.
What Gracie’s about to learn is that she can’t do this alone, and every single person who has entered her life since her return to Heron Creek will need to pitch in for her to succeed.
Well, that and the fact that she might not be able to save everyone…not even herself.
I've been publishing New Adult romance novels for a little over a year, starting with Broken at Love and continuing with the rest of the Whitman University series. I adore telling stories, discovering the little reasons people fall in love, and uncovering hidden truths in the world around us – past and present.
In my spare time I cuddle my two dogs, pretend to enjoy exercising so that I can eat as much Chipotle as I want, and harbor a deep and abiding hope that Zac Efron likes older women. I loves reading, of course, along with movies, traveling, and Irish whiskey.
I'm hard at work, ALWAYS, and hope to bring you more Whitman University antics and at least one more Lowcountry ghost tale before the end of the year.

Reviewing this book without spoilers is a labor of love -- and insanity inducing, but rest assured no spoilers exist -- just a serious book hangover.
Six novels and two novellas of the Lowcountry Mysteries span six months of Gracie’s life so far, and I don’t feel like I could ever tire of reading about her antics, mishaps, and triumphs. I’m TERRIBLE and choosing favorites, but if forced to choose my favorite Heron Creek tale, I believe Not Quite Right would be my favorite Gracie book.
Every time I finish a Lowcountry novel, I stop to think about how far she’s come since that first introduction in Not Quite Dead that says, “In retrospect, perhaps drinking myself to sleep in my grandparents’ driveway hadn’t been the best idea.” From that first day late in May until the end of this book Gracie steadily finds herself not only crawling out of the depression she arrived in but finding her place in Heron Creek.
As usual, Gracie’s life is a whirlwind of trouble. Leo and Mel are dealing with the aftermath of their arrest after helping to find info about the Middletons in the last book. Her relationship with Beau is hanging in the balance as well. They have so many things working against them, and sometimes love isn’t enough to counteract the forces of nature pulling two people apart. Then there’s Mama Lottie -- a ghost that refuses to be ignored who’s bound and determined to have revenge on the Draytons leaving Gracie in the middle. She’s powerful, she’s scary, and she means business. Poor Gracie.
The emotional range of Not Quite Right is so fitting to Gracie’s life at the moment. No matter how much stress and chaos going on around her, she still maintains her snarky wit and desire to save and protect those she loves. But she won’t make it to the end of this book without heartache and hurt. The curse hanging over her family is looming throughout the book, and she has to reach deeper for help than she realized or risk losing everything she’s fought so hard for.
No matter how Lowcountry began, Gracie is no longer the friendless, ostracized young woman she was in Not Quite Dead. She’s become the nucleus of a patchwork, mismatched family. The connections this book weaves between everyone leaves little room for the entire Heron Creek gang to deny their lives would be emptier and far lonelier without Gracie bringing them together.
Fair warning, though … there were tears. So maybe you should just read for yourself to see why. I’m going to nurse my book hangover.
Excellent entry in the series! There were plenty of thrills, chills and unexpected turns. Many ongoing storylines were resolved much to my delight and satisfaction. Gracie continues to be a hot mess a lot of the time but I think I can see growth in her. Her relationships with just about everyone have matured. She still does things that have me mentally screaming "don't do it" but then how interesting would the series be if she always did the most logical things and took the safe roads. I can't wait to see what's next for Gracie and her posse. On to the next book soon!
I really want to give it a 4 1/2 star review but that option isn’t available. Again I love Gracie and her friends. I did get a little confused on how Gracie and Beau are related though. Also the way that Mama Lottie’s story ends was extremely anticlimactic, hence the 4 stars. Travis taking off without a word also has me confused unless that will be dealt with. And for heaven’s sake, let Gracie And Leo kiss! Lol. I’m rooting for you Leo! This was definitely a page turner. So I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A lot happens, and it's hard to put this down. Mystery, ghosts, voodoo, family s.trife and romance.
This volume covers so much, and answers many questions from previous ones. It is wild and wooly and totally entertaining. The characters are real, believable people. The more I read of these stories, the more I love this series. I have also been reading the novellas that give voice to the other characters and add to the story
I am so glad that the author gave us some conclusions to some major points in this book while still leaving enough to want to continue reading about Gracie and her friends. I really enjoyed this book and will continue with the series.
This book is another in this series that does not disappoint. I love Grace and her band of friends. I was also glad to see so many threads from previous books tied up in a nice bow in this one. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
If Not Quite Right were to be the end of Lyla Payne's Low Country Mysteries, it would stand as the perfect ending! However, it's only the end of this part of the story. Which is such a relief, because I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to Heron Creek, SC! I read through it in lightning fast speed. It was a roller coaster ride...something I probably have said for each book in the series thus far. And it's true.
What I wanted most was for things to work out, and for the most part it did by the end of the epilogue. There's the curse, Mama Lottie, Det. Travis, Amelia's depression and her unborn baby, the strained relationship between Gracie and Beau, Mel and Will, Leo, Lindsay, and Marcella. Plus Gracie's father, Clete and everything else! Everybody has something or someone to lose at this point. With that much on the line, I couldn't sleep until I finished reading the book. I was that anxious.
If you had asked me if I would be rooting for Brick Drayton three books ago, I would have said you're stark raving mad. Yet he has fully won me over. I've got to applaud Lyla for his character development. Now for Travis: After the revelation of his possible lineage in Not Quite Clear, I wanted to slap him for being so secretive.
At the risk of revealing spoilers, I can't in good conscious dish out any more of what happened. Just know that I'm really satisfied with how everything turned out. I had a lot of feels reading Not Quite Right, probably the most I've felt while reading any of the Low Country Mysteries. There's still places to go. Ghosts who need to move on. Relationships that need mending.
I'm looking forward to what Not Quite Mine will bring without the heavy stress that has hung like a cloud over the last few books in the series. Now I need to make sure I pay a visit to Drayton Hall the next time I visit my friends in Summerville and Charleston! :) *****FIVE STARS*****
My goodness just when you think you've read it all, now to write an awesome view without spoilers. So here goes Gracie is back more determined than ever to get rid of the family curse, send Mama Lottie on her ghostly way and save Beau, Leo, Mel and Millie oh yeah and she can do it all on her own 'snort'.
Gracie is amazing her capacity for love is ever reaching but she needs to learn to trust those closest to her, as Gracie lets more people in things start happening, let's hope it all comes out ok.
I'm not even touching Graciela's love life cause it's just something you Have to read yourself.
Delving into Drayton family history to find out more about Mama Lottie could prove deadly for Graciela but she just can't stop researching it's just not in her make up to give up.
Once again, I cannot stress how much I adore this series. I really didn't expected to be that taken at the beginning, but I'm completely hooked. So many twists and turns in these novels, they keep us on our toes, dying to know more about what's going to happen next ! But one of the things I love the most are the characters, you feel like you know them, you want to be friends with them, you definitely want them to be real ! (well, except Mama Lottie, of course).
At the end of the book, the problem of the curse is now dealt with, we won't see the frightening Mama Lottie any more, but other things may come up - so let's stay tuned, we'll hear more from Gracie and her friends !
Incredible book! Finally the show down with Mama Lottie! Will the curse be broken? Will a new curse be put in its place? So many questions that needed answers in this book! If you don't know the questions then STOP! Read Not Quite Dead first, get hooked on Gracie and her gang, then after binge reading all books come back to get the answers! You'll love it. I'm so excited to read Not Quite Mine in May! Gracie is to good to give up!
This was by far the best in the series. From Momma Lottie, the Anne Bonny curse, the Drayton family involvement and potential curse - there are so many twists and turns it is riveting. I honestly don't know how to write a review without spoilers, so I am going to keep it brief. Just know it was exceptionally well-written, action-packed, and full of emotion. All I will say is that I absolutely loved be the ending and it was so nice to see things come full-circle.
Not Quite Right picks up exactly where Not Quite Clear ends, so if it's been awhile you may want to re-read the last few chapters as a refresher. I like that some of the major storylines were wrapped up while others are just getting started. Can't wait for Not Quite Mine to come out and so very glad that there isn't such a long wait this time.
In this latest book we see the major storylines from the previous books being wrapped up but with new ones starting to happen. I can't help but love Gracie and all her pals. As soon as I saw this had been released I had to buy it and then to my amazement the next one is also due out this month Yippee !!
I have been waiting on bated breathe for this book, and it did not disappoint! It was the perfect balance of answering and wrapping up loose ends, while leaving others dangling that keeps you wanting to come back for me. People think by book 6 you would be ready for the series to end, but it is so well written and so masterfully crafted that this really just feels like the beginning.
Breath taking. An amazing series of books that keeps you gripped. Get them, you won't be disappointed!
LOve, love, love this series! Amazing characters, amazing storylines all very expertly written by Lyla Payne, my new favourite author. I can't wait for the next book, which I 've pre-ordered.
This story-like the rest of the series,is clever and interesting from beginning to end. The characters are believable, fallible and interesting. The ending was great with resolution of the curse. I like this author!
I could not put this book down! I kept promising myself "just one more chapter" and ended up finishing in two days. I really enjoy Gracie and her friends. If you've read the other books in this series this is a must read and in my opinion, the best yet.
I have been eagerly awaiting this book for months and it did not disappoint. All the major plots are resolved but I am still excited to read the next one on May 31st.
Kayla Payne does an excellent job weaving together history, culture and mystery. The characters and plot she created are well developed and realistic. I love this series and look forward to the next book.
Like all the other books in this series, great book. Glad to see some of the ongoing issues for the characters getting solved. Looking forward to the next book and new issues for the characters.
