شيءٌ ما فيها شدني كثيرا ..
الكاتبة ألفة كتبت الرواية بعد أن قرأت كتاب رسول حمزاتوف "بلدي" وقررت أن تكتب قصة عائلتها المنفية من داغستان إلى دمشق ..
قصة جميلة ..
أتطلع إلى قراءة عمل آخر لها يحمل اسم"دمشق يابسمة الحزن"

The storytelling method of Sheherazade (of 1,001 Nights fame) is here employed by a Syrian of Dagestani descent to tell the story of her grandfather and how he came from Dagestan to Damascus in the early 19th century. As its translator notes, the simply told novella is more of an Islamic story than it is a Syrian, or certainly Arab, story. The grandfather, Salih, is brought to live in Damascus by his father, a highly-respected elderly Dagestani mufti. There, he raised never to forget his homeland-a territory in the Caucuses adjacent to Chechnya and resisting invasion by the powerful Russian empire at the time. Salih grows up in Damascus and accorded the privilege of going on the pilgrimage to Mecca with with his father. On the trip, he learns the reason behind their exile in Damascus, and vows to return to his homeland one day to see his mother. He grows older, builds a family, and rises to prominence in Damascus, and eventually he fulfills his vow to travel to Dagestan and reunite with his mother. The book is a quick read suitable for children and is a good introduction to the little known history of Dagestan and its resistance to Russian rule. Those interested in further reading are directed to Yo'av Karny's Highlanders, an excellent book on the people and history of the Caucuses, which spends 125 pages on Dagestan. The book also provides many examples of the centrality of faith in many Muslims' lives.

الفكرة مألوفة وبسيطة أما نسجها هو مايميزها لغة وبلاغة ولا أروع

عن داغستان والشيخ شامل والثورة في وجه الاستعمار الروسي وتخاذل الدولة العثمانية عن نصرة إخوتهم المسلمين

المفتي محمد الجلبي ومنعه من دخول داغستان بعد ذهابه مع وفد للقاء السلطان العثماني محمود للاستنجاد بالدولة العثمانية في وجه الاحتلال الروسي وإرسال فرمان مختوم لأقرب والي عثماني لداغستان حتى ينجدها من الاحتلال الروسي إلى سحب وعوده وانقلابه على الوفد بمنعه من دخول داغستان (تواطؤ منه مع روسيا حتى لا تتعارض المصالح)

الفروسية وضرورة تعليمها لأبنائهم كاعتبارها انها إرث يتوارثه الداغستانيين ما جعلهم تحت راية الشيخ شامل يصمدون أمام الاحتلال الروسي قرابة ٢٥ عام

عن مناسك الحج خطوة بخطوة في رحلة من دمشق إلى الأراضي المقدسة على ظهور الإبل

عن بر طفل بأمه عاش معها عشر سنوات ثم فرق بينهم الزمن حتى بلغ الخامسة والأربعين
يطوي الأراضي والجبال ويمخر البحار ويبحث عنها فيجدها عمياء ،يسعى لعلاجها حتى يعود النور لعينيها

ينفذ وصية أبيه فيذهب بأمه للحج ويخدمها ويعود بها ،ترفض الإقامة في دمشق وتعود لبلدها داغستان المحتلة من الروس لينقضي أجلها بعد عام من لقاء الحاج صالح

لا تدع القارئ لها يترك عملها دون الانتهاء منه
وفي النهاية هي رواية قد تكون أحداثها حقيقية أو بعض منها لكن لا يصح اعتبارها مرجع تاريخي لاستحالة أو صعوبة توثيق ما ورد بها

Idilbi's novel uses a story-within-a-story structure in which a woman in Syria tells her children stories about her grandfather who came to Damascus from the Caucasus to escape the Russian empire with his father. The novel tells the grandfather's life story, from his years longing as a boy to one day be reunited with his mom through his years as a successful and holy businessperson organizing pilgrimage caravans to Mecca in the middle nineteenth century. Will he ever reunite with his beloved mother back in the Caucasus? Why did his parents divorce? Will his people win their freedom from the Russians? These are just a few of the questions that the novel teases with the simplicity of a children's bedtime story but the rich detail of a poem.

My copy of the book has the title Grandfather's tale.

I've read it before and I enjoyed it again in the past few days - the slow pace of the storyteller, every story containing more stories inside it, and the abrupt ending, that surprises the reader because it's so sudden; but it brings you to a point of reflection, where the entire story is laid in front of you in its full richness.
