No tears for queers: Ett reportage om män, bögar och hatbrott

Rate this book

Quick review

No tears for queers is, despite what my rating indicates, a rather good read. It examines three major cases where gay people are victims of crime. A major point in all cases is that a minority or a majority of the people interviewed reject the claim these crimes were hate crimes. But, as the author argues - and I agree with - they were indeed hate crimes. When examining the crimes, Hilton at times uses a fictional narrative. (He is clear that these parts are fiction, but they do portray a realistic turn of events.) Personally, they were a give and take for me. They didn't add much in facts, but they were a nice break from the long interviews and/or facts. It did lower the professional tone, however.

But yes, Hilton's facts are good. He has done a thorough research in each crime. On the other hand, there is close to no analysis of the facts, what it means for the people in the LGBT+ community, and other interesting aspects. That, and the fact the three cases that are brought forward in this book were all committed in the Western world. Otherwise, a good book that could've done with more reflections and analysis.

I only read the part that dealt with the satanic killing in Keillers Park. Although the presentation as such seemed to come quite close to what actually happened, I disliked the approach for two reasons:
1) The author wrote in prose-style, instead of merely detached/descriptive, presumably in order to evoke stronger emotions.
2) The author claims and insists that the satanic killing was a 'hate-crime' primarily conducted out of a hatred towards homosexuals, based in a 'homo-social' relationship of the two satanic perpetrators.

I simply do not agree with the authors attempt to twist this homicide into a hate-crime; the perpetrators antipathy towards homosexuals is evident, but it is only a minor piece in a larger puzzle (i.e. they wanted to kill many more people, none of whom were homosexuals, but merely humans).

You can expect rage, tears and a nagging feeling of nausea, but none of those are reasons to ignore this book. Have a word of caution though; I'm not sure how much the author has twisted the stories, as the narrative seems to be enriched with quite a few units of literary garland to really play on the emotions of the reader.

Pretty interesting journalist account of deadly violence against male homosexuals. Got me thinking about In cold blood by Capote, sort of the same style of writing. A chilling read and a fairly quick one too. Recommended!

I think everyone should read this book! I' just saying... I cried 2 times 'cause this book's about reality and it really touched me and pissed me off, how people still can be so driven by hate it's disgusting!
