Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

In this one, Jessica discovers she has a talent for acting and has the most positive experience of her life! She even gets coached by a real glamorous old Hollywood actress! Wow life changing EXCEPT NOT cuz in the end she gives it up because... ????

The moral of the story is you should give up on things you are good at and passionate about

I got a little burnt out reading the Sweet Valley Twins series earlier this year, so I took a break for awhile. The biggest problem is that I read these books only once as a kid, and only some of them, so the nostalgia factor isn't always there for me like with SVH. I re-read every SVH book over and over as a child, so when I pick those up to read now it's like revisiting friends. It's just not like that with the Twins books, unfortunately.

But, I'm finally ready to try reading these again. I only own maybe a dozen more, and I can only find a few at the library, so I'll be skipping a lot of books. (Maybe someday I can track down more!)

Anyway, this was pretty cute. I like Jessica so much more when she's not a sociopath, and she's pretty awesome in this book.

Jessica on Stage
Jessica is now into acting and is reading everything in sight about her favorite current actress Sarah Burnstein. On this rainy day, she has a Unicorn meeting and forgot she’s supposed to bring the cookies. So, at the last minute she convinces her mother to take her to the store. On the way back, Mrs. Wakefield has an accident when she sees a dog and hits the car of a elderly woman named Mrs. Harrington. Mrs, Harrington claims she’s in SOOO much pain. So, Mrs. Wakefield does the right thing and takes her to the ER. The doctor’s look her over and say it’s just a muscle strain, but she insist on staying there so they keep her for 24 hours. Jessica (like me) knows this woman is a drama queen and is impatient to get to her meeting. On the way back home, Alice says Mrs. Harrington loos familiar.

Later, Liz starts to think about Mrs. Harrington and feels bad for her. She suggests they visit her. Jess isn’t interested so she and Alice go. Mrs. Harrington apologizes for the way she acted, but then gets sad and says she’s not much of a driver. Her husband used to do the driving but he died eight years ago. Because they traveled a lot, they never had a family. Which is something she regrets. She becomes “tired” and sends them away. When they get home Jessica tells them she knows who Mrs. Harrington really is and shows them an old film. She’s actress Dolores Dufay.

Alice tells them she and her husband Richard were a husband and wife acting team back in the 40s and 50s, They started out on Broadway and then were cast as the romantic leads in a couple of popular movies. Richard was even nominated for an Academy Award. When they got older they went on to play character roles. But Alice says she can’t remember her playing anything in the last several years. Jessica says maybe she’s too old, but Alice says your never too old (or young) to act. Liz notices the look in her sisters eye that means she’s scheming.

The next day Liz expects Jessica to tell everyone, but she doesn’t. She just listens to Belinda telling about a kiteen she found with Amy. They can’t take it home with them and they can’t get it to eat. Ken suggests they should get some liver. They all decide to chip in some money and go to the store. They ask Liz to go with them but Jessica says she can’t go. They have an important errand to do. Liz tells her not to even think about using her, but Jessica says she wants to do something nice for her. She says she wants to get her a special kind of tea. Jessica says she just wants to hear about her adventures in Hollywood and Liz thinks it’ll be a nice gesture. She admittedly wants to hear about her adventures too. Jessica has brought her autograph book, but Mrs, Harrington doesn’t look happy to see her. She has her brace on and says she’s not in the mood for company, but she says they can come in for a minute.

Jessica is in shock. The house is a mess! She says while she was in the hospital she was robbed. She says some antique jewelry was stolen but because the place is so wrecked it’ll take time to get it all straightened and to even figure out what was stolen. The police have already been there. The twins volunteer to help her get her house straightened up. So, she makes tea and the twins start to work. Mrs. Harrington osits on the couach and the twins let her tell them what to do. They find a picture of her way back when. Jessica points out who she is and Mrs. Harrington runs into the kitchen in tears. Jessica apologizes and she says it’s alright. She overreacted and it’s hard to be reminded. Then she tells them about her husband and says she doesn’t have much now, She says not all movie stars have a mountain of money but everyone always thinks your rich. She says her husband was the better performer. When he died that was the end of it for her. Then she puts them out. Jessica wants to ask her for an autograph but doesn’t feel it’s the right time. So, instead she says they’ll come and continue to help clean up.

For the next three days they go back to help and sometimes Mrs. Harrington talks about her husband and about acting. She likes the fact that Jessica is interested in acting. She won’t though talk much about “the glamor” of it all. Liz tells Jessica she thinks Mrs. Harrington likes her and compliments her on One day, Liz pleads with her mother to let her keep the cat and she says yes (I guess she forgot that her husband and son have allergies). She says maybe Jessica will help her take care of it (snorts I guess she’s also forgotten that Jessica made Liz do all the work when she was trying to walk the dogs to earn money for the class trip). Jessica comes home in a panic and says that Mrs. Harrington has lost a valuable scrap book.
They go to the police but he tells them the book won’t be valuable to a robber. They want things they can sell. So they go around looking in the shops around SV but don’t find the book. They search until Liz has to leave and go get the kitten. They find her, bring her home, and give her some milk. The kitten turns out to be very active. They give her the name “Mischief”. Jessica thinks they should come up with something to do to help Mrs. Harrington. Steven suggests they get her a dog and coincendently his friend has some German Shephard puppies. They decide to ask Ken to go with them. Liz tries to say maybe they should ask Mrs. Harrington but Jessica is already excited about the idea.

Jessica picks one out but tells Liz she has to carry it so it won’t slobber on her blouse. When they take it to Mrs.Harrington she isn’t exactly thrilled but lets it inside. It goes wild and start running through the house and wrecking it. They try to grab it but find out quickly the puppy isn’t trained. They’re finally able to tie it to the poarch. Mrs. Harrington tells her he’d be too much work. With her neck injury she can’t keep him and he’d be too much to feed. She can’t keep it. Jessica wants her to take the puppy back to Joe (annoyed because why can’t Jessica take it back? He was her idea). After this Jessica reads the paper to Mrs. Harrington (she’s lost her glasses in the mess) and they have tea and cookies. Jessica finds an acting workshop in the paper. In four sessions they’ll study voice, gesture, movement and other techniques of stage craft. Jessica thinks it sounds like work. Mrs. Harrington says but they’re necessary tools for any actor, To be a *good* actor someone has to put in the work.

Mrs. Harrington says if she wants to be an actress she should take the workshop. Reluctantly she says she’ll sign up. Jessica gets sent a booklet and the director tells her to read it over before the class and practice some scenes. Only on the first day she oversleeps and doesn’t read any of the scenes. She doesn’t want to let Mrs. Harrington down tho. Mrs. Harrington is excited to see Jessica and she tells her the techniques were more like games and demonstrates how they taught her to mime. She mimes skiing. Mrs. Harrington compliments her on her the facial expression she used for the fear of skiing. Jessica notices how happy Mrs. Harrington looks. She’s actually laughing. She tells her about her stern acting coach “The Baroness”. She gets upset when she and her acting partner can’t mime a chicken because they never saw one. So, she decides to demonstrate. All afternoon she tells her stories about her acting experiences in NY. She invites her back to practice her scenes and Jessica happily agrees. Before she leaves she gives her an old autographed picture that ells her she’ll be a fine actress one day if she works hard. She can’t wait to tell Lila and the Unicorns.

Only Lila doesn’t believe her until she shows her the picture. Lila asks how she meet her. Ellen asks can they meet her. Jessica says she’ll be at her performance and Mrs. Dufray will be there. For three weeks she works hard. The director assigns her and her partner Martin (a shy boy) two scenes. It’s a scene about two children losing a kite, but the girl explains it’s best the kite be free. Mrs. Harrington says she’s perfomed this play. Once as the boy. The other time with her husband. Jessica gets a lot of tips by Mrs.Harrington and still has it. She turns into that tweleve year old boy. Jessica asks why she doesn’t go back into acting and she says she’s been out of work for too long and she’s too old and that’s the end of that. Jessica learns all her lines and Mrs. Harrington says she’s proud of her. She says she can’t come to the play but she can come to the dress rehersal. Only Lila and Ellen can’t come to the dress rehersal. Lila tells her her performance better be good. She’s missed a lot of Unicoron meetings. She says it will be. She’s disappointed for a minute but decides its for the best because Mrs. Harrington doesn’t look like a movie star anymore,

The day of the dress rehersal, Jessica looks for an old kite of Steven’s that looks like a bird. Steven says he throw it away weeks ago. Jessica says she can’t do the play without it. Steven says just buy another one. Liz tells her to try the stand at the flear market. So, Liz and Jeessica go there to find the kite makers stand. Jessica finds a kite that’s similar and Liz shows her the book she finds that’s dedicated from Richard to Mrs. Harrington. It’s hers scrapbook. They don’t have enough money for it so they have to go home. When they get back the flea market is closed and all the books are gone. They find the man but he tells them he’s already packed up. They convince him to let them look and they find the book. They write down the man’s license plate. They then give it to the police and he says he’ll get on it right away.

Mrs. Harrington comes to the play and Jessica holds off on telling her about the book. Jessica wants to introduce her to some of the cast but she says she doesn’t want anyone to make a fuss. She says she’ll be in the front row. She looks around a little backstage then goes to take her seat. Liz brings the cat to the play in a basket, Mrs, Harrington says she reminds her of her old cat. The cat jumps into Mrs, Harrington’s lap and Liz apologizes but Mrs. Harrington doesn’t seem to mind. Jessica does *very* well . Marin kind of flubs his lines. The director says they’ll do great that night. Mrs. Harrington says Jessica is very talented but she worries that she won’t have the discipline. She says she’ll also ned support from people who care. She was fortune. She had all three. Liz asks her doesn’t she miss being on stage but she says not without her husband. She started to think today it was a mistake to give it up but. At that moment Jessica interrupts and asks how she was and Mrs. Harrington says she was wonderful. Liz says she was wonderful too. Especially when she was able to help Martin without making it look like she was taking over. Mrs. Harrington thanks Liz for introducing her to Mischief. Then the twins take off to talk to the police officer. The vendor’s house was searched and not only was the scrapbook found he confessed to several bulgaries. So, he was arrested. He says they’ll return everything to Mrs. Harrington and he lets the twins have the scrapbook so they can return it to her. He says they’ll make great detectives some day. They decide to give her the scrapbook after the performance. Liz decides they can take her another present. Mrs. Harrington calls and tells Liz she’ll she’s decided to come to the performance and she agrees to come over afterwards. Jessica then calls Lila and the rest of the Unicorns and tells Liz to bring her camera so she can get a picture with Mrs. Harrington. The Unicorns will just DIE!

Before the play Jessica says .. Delores Dufray in the audience. She’s transfored back through her hair and makeup. Before the play, the director says Martin didn’t show up because he had a terrible case of stage fight. Jessica feels her eyes tear up but Mrs, Harrington tells her to come on. If they can find some men’s clothes she’ll take Martin’s place. Jessica does her lines flawlessly and it’s a moment she’ll never forget.

That night, Mrs. Harrington tells everyone she’ll be going back into acting. They give her the scrapbook and she gets emotional. They tell her how they got it back and she says she’s very proud. They also give her Mischeif. The next day at school, all her classmates want to know if she’ll be making a movieand going on Boardway with Delores that is until Caroline says the boys East German team will be staying with her.

My Thoughts
Do you know in all of the Sweet Valley books (Kids, High, and Twins) this is probably the *BEST* I have ever seen Jessica? Now admittedly she didn’t care about this woman until she found out who she was and she did want something from her initially for he rest of the book I gotta say I was surprised. She shows restraint and doesn’t ask for the autograph when she finds out she’s been robbed. She helps clean her hosue. She doesn’t even clean her own room and at this point in the story she does it for absolutely nothing and with no expectations. She actually wants to help her find her scrapbook and actually does something brave to find it. She gets the license plates number and turns it over to the police. She doesn’t try to do something rash like steal the book back. (Which I expected her to do when she didn’t have the money). She tries to help by getting her a pet. She even thinks of some reasonable suggestions (get her out the house to meet people, get her a hobby). And I am REALLY surprised because I know Jessica likes to flit from one thing to the next. Why is it like that with Jessica’s? My cousin’s name is Jessica and she is the EXACT same way. But this is something she really is good at. SMH. You would think she’d take this and run with it. But no! She’s bored with it after one play. Also weird to me how we learn in Kids that Steven and Ned are allergic to cats and it’s forgotten all about in his book.

Rating: 6 I feel like Jessica earned a little more of my respect for her in this one. She actually showed that she can be thougufl.
