Rising star...falling star...

Kent Kellerman, soap-opera star, is coming to town. One whole episode of his show is being filmed downtown and Jessica and Lila have passes to get on the set. There's one small problem. The filming is to take place during school hours. They'd only have to skip one little class...

Now both girls must face up to their punishment. For Jessica, that means no extracurricular activities, no Booster club, and worst of all, no playing in the basketball championship playoffs. Without Jessica, the team is sure to lose, and she'll become Sweet Valley's most unpopular girl. That is, unless her twin sister, Elizabeth, agrees to save the day—and the game!

Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

lol, this book was hilarious. Classic doormat Liz doing whatever Jessica wants. Their relationship really is weird.

The best quotes where Elizabeth completely contradicts herself are below:

Page 39:
Elizabeth shook her head. "You're going to be sorry, Jess," Elizabeth warned her. "Don't expect me to bail you out when you get in trouble." BUT WE ALL KNOW IT WILL HAPPEN, LIZ!

Page 57 (honestly thought it would be much sooner):
"I have a feeling I'm making the biggest mistake of my life," Elizabeth said, relenting. "But I'll do it."

Page 59:
Elizabeth stood with her hands on her hips. It was no use. She had agreed to let Jessica play in the game in her place on Friday, and now she'd have to go along with the rest of the plan. WHY? NO YOU DON'T!

Page 69 (Classic Jess):
But if someone didn't talk to Ms. DiNardo at four, Elizabeth would be in trouble. And that would mean trouble for Jessica. Lol I admire your self preservation Jess.

Page 79:
Jessica: "You're my only friend in the world"
"Was your only friend in the world," Elizabeth cried. "You'll be lucky if I ever speak to you again!"
But we all know less than 10 pages later you will be speaking to her.

Page 94 (and the best advice Alice Wakefield has given Elizabeth):
"You're going to have to worry a little less about Jessica and a little more about yourself from now on" Mrs. Wakefield said quietly. WHY ARE YOU SAYING THIS QUIETLY!! YELL AT HER DAMNIT!
"Believe me," Elizabeth said sincerely, "I've learned my lesson."
"And remember, you won't always be there to take care of Jessica," Mr. Wakefield reminded her. "Jessica has to learn to be responsible for herself."
Yes she will.

Page 95
Elizabeth would have none of it. "I will never let you talk me into doing anything ever again. I've learned my lesson." Well if you have now said it twice we all know you don't really believe it.

Playing Hooky
Plot: Jessica and Elizabeth are at the mall. Jessica finds the perfect pair of purple tennis shoes to wear. She and Elizabeth are now on the girls’ basketball team and since Jessica is naturally athletic of course she’s the star of the team. Lila drops into the shoe store and tells Jessica there’s some commotion on the other side of the mall and people are saying Kent Kellerman is there (a famous teen actor)/ Lol Grace was like WHO, in the last book. So Jessica and Lila take off (leaving Elizabeth to wait in line and pay for the shoes). Brooke sees Elizabeth and they start to talk. Brooke tells Elizabeth Kent isn’t there. It's just a poster advertising that he’ll be shooting scenes in Sweet Valley (since when do they advertise when actors are in town shooting). Brooke says she oughta know because her Dad is tight with Kent (he’s a screenwriter) and has been talking to him for over a month (and ignoring her). This is enough to bring her to tears (in the middle of the store?) and Elizabeth suggests they go for ice0cream.

At the ice cream place, Elizabeth mentions they need more writers on the Sixer’s and she asks Brooke to cover an interview for a famous ballerina who use to be one of Madame Andre’s students. Brooke excitedly agrees. On the way home, Elizabeth tells Jessica about Brooke’s connection with Kent. Jessica, of course, gets excited, but Elizabeth tells her that Brooke didn’t tell a lot of people because she knew they’d be bugging her to get them on set. She makes Jessica promise not to ask Brooke to get her a pass to meet Kent. Jessica reluctantly promises. But later she thinks of a workaround. She’ll ask Brooke to join the Booster-(one of the members had to drop because of a move) and in turn Brooke would be so grateful she’d *offer* the passes.

On the day Brooke is supposed to meet Julie and Elizabeth to talk about the Sixers, Jessica intercepts her halfway to Julies and gets her to come with her instead to the Dairi Burger where she and Lila lay it on thick about how perfect she’d be for the Boosters and how much fun they have. Brooke remembers the promise she made to Elizabeth, but Jessica uses her mind games to get her to instead agree to try out for the Boosters. But at school, Brooke gives Jessica and Lila the passes but tells them Kent will be at another location by the time school is out. Lila wants to immediately eliminate Brooke from the Boosters (before she’s even tried out). Ken interrupts them and introduces Jessica to Billy Layton who’ll be competition for her on the court. Billie is also going out for the softball team and the track team. Caroline and Elizabeth join them and Caroline is disappointed that she’s giving the scoop on Billie too late (everyone already knows). She then gives another scoop. The gym teacher has jury duty and will be out all week. Jessica and Lila decide to cut lunch and gym and head over the set. But then Amy tells Elizabeth that Caroline heard wrong. The gym teacher did have jury duty but it got dismissed. So, Elizabeth decides to take her chances and heads over to try to save Jessica and Lila from getting caught.

Elizabeth finds Jessica and Lila in time, but on the way back to the school they’re spotted by the school’s secretary. (Wait a minute so where Kent is shooting is *that* close to SVMS that they can just run to and fro in less than 30 minutes? And why was the secretary there? Was she trying to get at Kent too?). Jessica and Lila are called into the office and punished (no extracurricular activities-which means the big upcoming basketball game is out) But Elizabeth isn’t (surprise surprise). All the kids start to freeze Jessica out (as she’s apparently the only one on the team) because their chances of winning the game Friday are now shot. Elizabeth feels guilty and tells Jessica she’ll go to the principal and share the punishment (washing blackboards). But Jessica tells her she needs her to do a twin switch so she can play in the game. And Elizabeth lets Jessica convince her.

But the next day Elizabeth learns Jessica also expects her to switch so she can go to practices. Elizabeth notices Brooke’s name isn’t on the list trying out for the Booster’s and she finds Brooke who says she changed her mind. She knows the Unicorns were just trying to use her. But Amy’s been there before and agrees to teach Brooke some cheers so (like with her) they’ll *have* to pick her. (The others on the list aren’t likely to make the cut). Jessica ties a purple ribbon around Elizabeth’s ponytail and rushes off to practice. Just then Elizabeth remembers the interview, but before she can find Jessica and tell her the deal’s off, Mr. Clark sees her and escorts her off to join Lila.

Mr. Bowman sees Elizabeth with Lila and thinks she’s Jessica. He’s not happy that Elizabeth left the ballerina hanging. Elizabeth is about to correct him but Lila says she saw “Elizabeth” in the gym practicing. Mr. Bowman then finds Jessica and tells her she’ll have to leave practice early because Mrs. Dinardo is waiting for her at the hotel. Only Jessica knows she has to practice because she has to show up Billie Layton. People are already saying she’s better than her. So she finds Brooke (whose in line to try out for the Boosters) and convinces her to do the interview but she gives her the wrong information (She tells her Mrs. Dendardo is at the studio). Shouldn’t Jessica know who this lady is as much as she *loves* ballet? Brooke is so grateful she invites “Elizabeth” over to her house Thursday for a dinner party with a “special guest”(I think we all know who that will be). Elizabeth finds out that Brooke went to the studio and the ballerina wasn’t there. She gets chewed out by Mr. Bowman for being irresponsible. Then she lets Jessica have it. Now she has three days to find someone else to interview. She and Brooke think of three people Amy’s mother, Nora’s grandfather, and Brooke’s father. But Brooke’s father and Amy’s mother (who's a reporter) aren’t in town and Marvin isn’t well.

Elizabeth is so stressed out and tired that she tries to back out of Brooke’s dinner. But then Brooke tells her who the guest is. Jessica wants to go but her parents remind her she’s grounded. Jessica wins the big game and is awarded MVP. Afterward, Billie calls her at home and tells her she’s the better player. Elizabeth tho hears Lila and Jessica bragging about how they did her a favor by not telling and she gets back at Jessica by making her switch to take her turn cleaning the blackboards. (Her guilty conscience gets the better of her and she goes to Mr. Clark and her parents. Mr. Clark makes her wash the blackboards). So Elizabeth gets off scot-free. (Then what was the purpose of her even telling).

My Thoughts:
First of all, this isn’t the first book I’ve read where I celebrity comes to the fictional town to shoot for a show or a movie (etc) and I’m thinking is this even a thing *anywhere*. Celebrities have come here but usually, it’s for an event that people are *supposed* to be in the how about. For example, they come for the Classic for a parade (the Classic for us is a football game between two famous state colleges and there are events all around it). Or they come for concerts. They do *NOT* announce if they’re shooting scenes. That’s just always seemed odd to me in teen books. Why would you announce *that* on a poster in the mall if you want to shoot the scene smoothly? I’m pretty sure that directors don’t have the time or the money to deal with love-sick fans showing up by the dozens and causing chaos on the set. I kinda imagine it to be like if you’ve ever watched the Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire and BBD were trying to shoot a video and they kept getting interrupted. Now we have had scenes shot here for movies. One I remember was “42” and what was advertised were for background people to fill up the stadium. Someone close to the family went out for be a part of that. I guess the reason it was during school hours was to prevent this, but it didn’t do any good because there was still a crowd. And were they shooting just on location (outside) or were they shooting on a set? Lila and Jessica had set passes? I just can not see all these extra people being allowed on set (unless they were part of the scene as background people) for no reason. Maybe it would have made better sense for the poster to advertise extra people were needed for the scene and that’s why they were here. At least in Playing Hooky Elizabeth shows a little spine. She makes her take her punishment *and* she doesn’t offer or try to plead with Alice and Ned to get Jessica to see Kent at Brooke’s dinner. She even gets in her face a little bit when she screws up the interview. (Not sure why Elizabeth trusted that she had it all under control). Even though I don’t really care about the Boosters, I don’t see why it had to be an either-or thing. Jessica does multiple stuff all the time (basketball, cheerleading, ballet). Brooke should have been able to be a Booster and write the occasional piece for the Sixers from time to time. I mean COME ON it’s not like the Sixers is a high-end publication. An hour tops if how long I see these “articles”.

Being Jessica and/or Elizabeth in this book must have been very exhausting with all the lying and pretending to be each other. It's quite a dull one, this one, but basically Jessica and Lila skip gym class and lunch break to go downtown to a movie set to meet Kent Kellerman, a heart throb actor. This decision is solidified when Caroline Pearce, that solid source of genuine information, tells them that their gym teacher is on jury duty. When Elizabeth finds out their gym teacher will in fact, not be on jury duty, she goes after them to let them know. However, she comes face to face with Ms Knight, the school secretary, who in turn grasses her up to the principal. Plot twist: Ms Knight thinks Elizabeth is Jessica. Jessica and Lila get detention and Jessica isn't allowed to play in the school basketball game where she is, of course, star player. Elizabeth takes her place in practice but then misses an important interview she was meant to do for the Sixers. There's a couple more switcheroos but it's not that interesting tbh. Saint Elizabeth feels so guilty at all the lies she grasses herself up. Le sigh.

This was the first sweet valley twins book I read in 4th grade after finding it at a garage sale, and I liked it. I always feel like Elizabeth is trying save Jessica and enables her bratty behaviour though

Sweet Valley Twins 20 - Playing Hooky
Kent Kellerman is filming in Sweet Valley! Jess and Lila hatch a plan to invite Brooke Dennis to try out for the Boosters in the hopes she’ll be so grateful and she’ll het them passes to meet him from her screenwriter Dad. Liz has already asked Brooke to be on the Sixers, but Jess sneaks her away. Brook gets the set passes but they’re for during school, so Jess and Lila skip! Also, there’s a new ‘tomboy’ who is really good at sports and Jess feels threatened because she’s the star basketballer player 🤷🏼‍♀️ Anyway, Jess and Lila skip lunch and gym when they hear there’s a substitute gym teacher… only Caroline is slipping and there’s no sub! Liz follows them and saves the day, getting to the girls and they head back to school in time - but get seen by the principal‘s secretary! Somehow Liz doesn’t get busted but the girls do. They have to clean the blackboards and no basketball for 2 weeks! Of course Jess convinces Liz to swap so she can play in the final. Then Jess continues to make a mess of Liz’s life, as per usual, including messing up a Sixers Liz and Brooke were supposed to get, but Brooke saves the day and gets them an interview with Kent! It’s game day, and Liz (ie, Jess) gets swapped out for Billie, a better player and Jess is fuming, haha. But Jess subs in and wins the game, and learns no lessons as she’s cheered as a hero 😒 But ‘Liz’ wins the MVP trophy so there is that. Liz also comes clean about skipping and gets a weeks detention… which she makes Jess do as her, ha!
My rating - 4/10 - I thought Jess would care more about her punishments but I should know by now!

(Review Not on Blog)

I picked up one of the Sweet Valley Twins novel at the library (before my strict read in order only rule) and fell in love with the California twins and their friends and family. I had just started reading thicker chapter books, and joining the library summer reading club, I went through these books pretty quick. I was excited that I could read and really fell in love with books and reading. I believe I was about 7-9 when I read these books so it was exciting to read about 12 year old popular preteens. I could relate to both Elizabeth and Jessica, and really could not pick which twin I liked better. I would not finish this series as I would quickly move on to Sweet Valley High (Double Love). These are very tame books, and any age could read them. First crushes and bullying were the big issues that I can remember. This is very Full House (TV series) kind of books.

In this one, Jessica feels like she is entitled to meet her fave actor just because she is a fan (like any delusional stan). Also, playing hooky is apparently devil smut
