Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

My playlist to listen to while reading this drama-laden book:

1) Listen to your Heart - Roxette (Mrs. Wakefield actually tells Liz to...."Listen to you heart" lollllz)
2) Torn Between Two Lovers - Mary MacGregor (the pinnacle of 70's schmaltz. Cheeeeese City!)
3)Two Lovers - Mary Wells ("Well, I've got two lovers, and I ain't ashamed/Two lovers, and I love them both the same" 🤣
4) If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free - Sting (I never understood this song when I was younger. Now that I'm supposedly more mature, I guess I understand now ha)

Ok so Liz is usually the smart one. So why TF does she STRING poor Jeffrey along, knowing that she's probably gonna dump him for Todd anyways?

So it's no spoiler that Liz gets back with Todd (umm just look at the cover at the next installment, #59 In Love Again 😆). Todd moves BACK to Sweet Valley and this time, as a millionaire's son!! His dad got promoted to Prez at the electronics company and he's back! So where does that leave Liz? Does she do the RIGHT THING and break it off with Jeffrey to sort out her complicated feelings? NOPE. She leads on poor Jeffrey pleading with him to "give her more time" to figure it out like GIRL do that on your own freaking time?!

It's kinda heartbreaking to witness Jeffrey going through this tumult at his own expense while Liz gets to galavant with both boys to "figure it out". WTF LIZ. Hearing Jeffrey lamenting to himself "I can't lose you. I won't just step aside and watch you go" 😭

Some "Days of our Lives" petty drama ensues with some hot snobby bitch vying for Todd's affection too, as she sets the wheels in motion for her to win Todd instead. Once Jeffrey figures out what's going on, he muses to himself, "In the end, if I really love her, isn’t it her happiness that’s the most important?" Good Lord, how are these SIXTEEN YEAR OLDS more emotionally mature than I am 😭

Anyway, justice for poor Jeffrey!! Liz did him dirty 😩

Todd's back in Sweet Valley, exept now he's Todd Wilkins AND Patman-rich, and Elizabeth is tore up in a very 1950s housewife with the vapors type of way. Jeffrey finally makes a cover picture- apparently he looks rather like an older child of the corn. As Todd 2.0 settles into a life of luxury at the local private prep school with his new BMW and new friends with names like Sheffield, Elizabeth moons, trying to figure out if her whole relationship with blond Malachi-I mean Jeffrey-was anything more than a big time rebound, while some rich girl who nonironically say "Ta-ta" from the top of her horse when they exit a scene schemes to make Todd her own. If you want to see who Elizabeth chooses, after much angst, just check out the cover of the next book. SUPER cheesy volume of the SVH story. Onward.

Brokenhearted
In the last book, Lila (at one of her famous parties) drops the bomb on Elizabeth that Todd will be back. Elizabeth waits for a letter from Todd and is disappointed because she wasn’t one of the ones to hear it first. (Winston and Lila knew first). Since Jeffry wasn’t at the party she tells him at school and on the outside he’s light about it (but on the inside we know he’s probably thinking oh ***!! There goes my relationship).

Elizabeth finally does get a letter and Todd tells her his Dad will now be the President of Varitonics (or was it the VP?) and the new position will come with a change of status. He won’t be going to SVH but Lovette Academy where all the “somebodies” go, Elizabeth is relieved and gets all emotional. (And the book ends here because if she’s this emotional from just him writing).

The big day finally arrives and he comes to see her. It’s awkward but clear they both still have feelings for each other. He has dinner with the Wakefield’s and they all welcome him back. Jessica presses up on him to give her and Liz a tour of his new school so they can meet some of his new friends. Among them is a girl named Courtney Kane (which is rather stripper esque or porn star ish) and Sheffield. Neither Jessica or Elizabeth think much of Courtney (Lila being the only one whose impressed by her). She’s known Courtney from the country club). But Jessica immediately has the hots for Sheffield because he’s rich and handsome, and she’s shallow as hell.

The big talk around SWH is Todd’s having this big bash and Elizabeth wonder if she’ll just get a regular invite or be invited as his date. She still hasn’t let Jeffrey know what’s up and that he doesn’t have anything to worry about (which was a blaring red sign that yes Jeffery your about to fade into SV oblivion just like AJ). What Courtney wants Courtney gets, and what Courtney wants is Todd so she gets the dirt from Lila about Liz and Jeffrey being almost, damn-near, engaged. Then she puts it in Sheffield’s ear because he’ll causally tell Todd he’s lost. Todd heartbroken invites Courtney as his date. Liz gets the plus one invitation and now she’s heartbroken (even though she still has Jeffry).

They go to Todd’s party together amd (it has GOT to suck to know you won someone by default and that you weren’t there choice) but Jeffry keeps trying to convince himself nothing’s changed. Jessica is all excited that Sheffield asked her to the dance, but he doesn’t turn out to be who she thought he was. He actually has substance and is doing a senior project on the homeless so he’s going to live as one (method acting some would call it).

Courtney slips a letter into Liz’s jacket and then fakes like she has a headache and leads Todd to his gazebo. When Liz arrives, she sees them and runs off. Jeffry who saw Courtney slip the note in Liz’s pocket and figures it out that she must have thought the not was from Todd. He pulls Todd to the side. Todd finds Liz at “their spot” (Secca Lake) and they get back together.

My Thoughts:
I don’t know if when I first read this book it was as obvious to me on this read that there was no doubt it was gonna be Todd, but there was big, glaring, red, arrows pointing over Todd’s head and flashing lights. When I think about who I like better for Elizabeth Jeffry *was* kind of bland but Todd in the first books might have impressed me once (and that was in Dangerous Love where he seemed to be considerate of her feelings) but in the others Todd tended to strike me as a controlling, jerk. I remember when she didn’t want to go somewhere with him and he physically picks her up and puts her in his car. But I guess the heart wants what the heart wants.

This was without a doubt Jeffry’s shining moment and the moment I’ll remember because let’s face it we might get a mention but Jeffery might as well move back to the farm. Once a Wakefield leaves you (your) life is pretty much over! RIP Jeffrey! As for Sheffield, s it just makes me shake my head that in this series other than Nicolas Morrow Sheffield Eastman probably had the most substance of any of these characters and Jessica is just too damn dumb to see that. Sheffield didn’t say he was gonna give away all his money and be homeless. He said he wanted to relate to them stronger by seeing what it’s like to be in their shoes. But yet Courtney and Jessica consider him “boring” because he wants to better humanity and make a difference. Sheffield you can do better than these broads who wouldn’t know a catch if it slapped them in the face.

Then there was Courtney Kane. Which is this the same Courtney that tried to steal AJ from Jessica. She *sounds* like the same character. Maybe not but if it’s not it should be. Because I can see her going after both Jessica’s man and Elizabeth’s just for the hell of it and to give the twins some drama. Mix it up a little. All in all I’m not looking forward to the next book of Elizabeth and Todd gushing all over each other because they’re reunited.

Rating: 6 (same score I gave it on Shelfari)

I downloaded this book via Kindle Unlimited.

I am actually Psychic Sally when it comes to knowing what happens. I knew that this would happen when Todd came back. Basically this whole book was about Liz deciding on her emotions being in a love triangle between her first love Todd, who has recently come back to Sweet Valley, and Jeffrey, the current love of her life who has been her partner for months and months. It was visible from the start that Liz was never going to choose Jeffrey and it's supposed to maintain her perfect image in the fact that it was Jeffrey who told Todd to go and get her, but I think it was still crappy of her to hang Jeffrey in suspense the way she did.

I hate this book, but I have to give it more than one star because of Jeffery. He was amazing, wonderful, caring, and it makes me so mad that Elizabeth still goes for Todd when really the boy of anyone's dreams is the one who who let her go! I'm kind of sad that I read this again because it makes me so mad at Elizabeth. It also really makes me sad that the author just lets Jeffery fade off after this book. He was unbelievably wonderful and I really hate that Elizabeth gives him up.

But yeah, basically this book is just about Elizabeth trying to decide between the now rich Todd Wilkins and the wonderful Jeffery French. Sorry, I kind of just told you how it ends. :P

This story was obvious right from the start and poorly written. I remember this was when I stopped reading this series a long time ago. Jeff... you were too nice for your own good and I hope you found love and success (since I never found out what happened to you). Elizabeth, that was dirty... I couldn't stand her after this book. I questioned your decision then and I shake my head at you now. I mean I expected her to date... but I just couldn't stand to hear anymore about Todd. I have always been team Jeffrey.

My cousin and I found like 80 of these old books. They're very cheesy and we're reading them for laughs. So far they've been very good on the funny part and okay on the actual writing part. Many more of these cheesy books I'll read!
