Elizabeth’s First Kiss
Jessica rushes up to Liz and Amy and asks if they’ve seen Mary. She’s got a private message to tell her from Peter Jefferies. He thinks she’s cute. Then she rushes off to meet Lila. Amy watches her leave and wishes she had a sister. Liz agrees it is pretty nice. She then sees Todd riding his bike and waves. Amy comments that Todd is pretty cute. Liz has been starting to think about him since she saw him dancing with Jessica at Aaron’s party and she’s been seeing him everywhere. Liz admits to herself she’s developing a crush on him. Amy says that Ken is also cute. He stopped by the other day to show her his bicycle. Liz thinks about telling Amy about how she feels about Ken but she’s not quite ready to share her feelings. She hasn’t even told Jessica. Then she’s pretty sure Jessica likes him and it just wouldn’t be right.

Jessica tells Lila, Todd asked her did she like bowling. Lila says maybe he’ll ask her bowling. Jessica says maybe and Lila says she didn’t think Jessica would be the first sixth grade Unicorn to have a boyfriend. Jessica tells Lila she’ll be next and then points out Jake (Hamilton) smiled at her. When she talks to Ellen later tho, she says Jake sat next to Roberta (Manning) on a 8th grade field trip last week. Ellen says don’t tell tho. Jessica looks out the window and sees Todd riding his bike past her house (and he’s riding slowly looking at her house). Ellen has news of her own. Rick (Hunter) gave her half of his candy bar. They end their conversation and then some girl calls Steven -and calls him Stevie-. Steven’s been being a player and dating several girls but this is a new one. Jessica ease-drops for a minute and finds out her name is Candice and he meet her in biology (and lent her his notebook).

Jessica looks through her clothes to find something to wear to go shopping the next day. Surprisingly, Liz lets her borrow her blue socks and matching shirt. Liz asks can she ask Jessica a question. She’s looking at Jessica’s fashion magazine. She asks her if she’s interested in someone special how would you get them interested. She says she needs to know who it is. Each boy is different and unique. You can’t use the same strategy on every boy. Basically her advice is adapt your interest to match his.

Liz brings up a good point. What if you just aren’t interested in what their interested in. Jessica says then they won’t be interested in you and then you and he wouldn’t have anything in common and nothing to talk about. Liz isn’t about this but Jessica says that’s just how it is. Jessica pushes up on how it is and Liz asks her who she thinks would be a good fit. First, she says Bruce (snorts). Then Aaron Dallas. Liz says she’s not any more interested in him than she was before he gave the party. Then she says Tom McKay and then Todd. Liz blushes and denies interest in either.

Jessica is surprised that she’s not into Todd. They were close in elementary, but Liz says they aren’t now. Jessica confesses to Liz she has a major crush on Todd and then she tells her despite Caroline she knows Todd likes her because he keeps following her. Then she tells her about spotting Todd that afternoon. Liz says she just thinks but then leaves it there. Jessica tells her she’s glad they had this talk. Now they’ll be on the same level. Liz decides to watch a funny movie with Jessica to take her mind off Todd now that it seems like he’s into Jessica. Then Steven comes in with his flavor of the day Lindsey. Some girl he’s trying to impress by acting like he’s into ice-hockey.

But when Jessica points out he said he doesn’t like ice-hockey, Lindsey says she’d rather watch the game at home and if he doesn’t want to watch it with her he doesn’t have to. He follows her out red-faced. The Unicorns go to Casey’s, and start talking about Rick and Todd again. This irritates Lila who says boys aren’t everything. There are other things to talk about. Jessica says yeah but boys are the most fun. Even Liz is interested now. Lila can’t believe this and Jessica tells her about the conversation they had. Lila says it’ll take more than faking an interest. Liz really needs to do something about her looks. Then Ellen starts dissing Liz’s hair, clothes, and lack of makeup. Jessica can’t really argue. Lila says she needs a makeover. Ellen, Jessica, and Mary agree. Jessica says there might be something she can do. They ask which boy she’s interested in but Jessica says she didn’t say (but she vows to find out).

Steven comes in with a dark-haired girl that turns out to be Candice. She and Mary talk about Steven’s harem. Jessica goes over to Steven’s table and attempts to join them teasingly, but then she and Mary say they have to go . Jessica knows he was scared she’d blow his cover. Liz can’t focus on her homework. She can’t stop thinking about Todd. Maybe Jessica will lose interest and go on to the next boy. So, she needs a plan. She takes her hair down and starts to wonder if she can do something more sophisticated with it. Jessica walks in and in surprise sees Liz with her hair down. She asks if she thinks their parents will let her get a perm. Jessica volunteers how to show her how to use her curlers and she’ll show her some make up techniques (in exchange for her purple skirt).

Jessica says Todd will love it. To Liz’s relief she means he’ll love how she looks in Liz’s purple skirt. Jessica tries to find out who the boy is, but Liz just won’t say. Liz looks at her new style and thinks she looks like Jessica but she tells Jessica she loves it. Lindsey is over and she and Steven are supposed to be doing homework, but their dancing. Candance calls and he tells her he’s doing something for his father. But he tells her she’s special to him and he can’t wait to see her. He gets mad when he sees Jessica and threatens that she better not say anything.

On Monday, Liz decides to go to school with her old look, but Jessica stops her with a blue and green dress and a curling iron. She looks good but she feels wrong. Amy mistakes her for Jessica. It’s the same with Sophia. She just tells them she felt it was time for a change. Ellen is impressed. Lila is a little more low-key. The boys seem to like the new look. The Unicorns press Jessica on who the boy is and give Jessica a hard time when she doesn’t have an answer for them. Then they see Jim giving Liz a note and they think it’s him. Even tho they’ve said he likes Billie. Jessica runs into Tood, but he thinks she’s Liz. Janet walks by and speaks and he doesn’t know her so Jessica has to tell him about the Unicorns. He asks if Liz is a Unicorn and Jessica says no but she could have been. He then loses interest and tells her he’ll see her later.

(He was about to ask her something before Jessica corrected him on being Liz). Jessica brushes it off and tells herself he’s just shy. It won’t be long before he tells her he likes her. Janet encourages this by later saying it looked like he “ran into her” on purpose. Janet tells Lila (and then she tells Jessica and Ellen) that Jake said she was pretty cute and he hoped to talk to her soon. Jessica doesn’t think it sounds too promising but doesn’t say anything. Lila tells her to make a move on Todd. Go over and have lunch with him. She hesitates but Lila dares her. So, she has to do it.

When he sees her he calls her Elizabeth. Then he apologizes. She says that’s ok. It’s an easy mistake when they wear each other clothes. They’re hands touch when he passes her the salt. Then Lila and Mary come over and start flirting with the boys. This ends Jessica and Todd’s conversation. Liz is miserable the rest of the day. She’s seen Jessica sitting with Todd. Liz wishes she was more like her sister. All the boys are paying Liz attention and it makes her a little uncomfortable. Jessica comes up to her and tells her she thinks its Jim, but she says it isn’t. They were just talking about homework. Then she gets Amy to verify this. Still, Jessica thinks it’s Jim. Amy tells her maybe Liz just doesn’t want to tell her. Alhtough Jessica says she owes it to her (for giving her the new look).

Amy says she can tell her but no pressure. Liz says she’s not even sure why she did it. Amy says it’s because she wanted to look her best. She likes her in her old clothes but the hair and makeup *do* look good on her. Amy says maybe she can help her with a new look. Lila and Ellen also think its Jim and then they start to guess what boy it could be (Randy Mason). Lila decides to prank Liz by letting all the boys know she’s looking for a boyfriend.

Todd comes up to Liz at her locker and asks if she likes bowling. She says she’s gone a few times but that’s all he says. She wonders if he even know it was her. Or did he think it was Jessica? She thinks how horribly it went. She even said she was clumsy. He’s probably good at it. Now he’ll never speak to her again. Amy tells her there’s a new bowling alley and a lot of the kids are talking about it. On the way home, Amy and Liz see Steven walking with Candance. Amy says she bets it’s interesting to have two girlfriends -after Liz tells her he’s into another girl too-. Liz says she bets it’s also complicated.

Steven makes a date with Lindsey at this same rink. Jessica says she heard Todd and Aaron will be at the rink Friday. Maybe they should go. Despite her reservations, she agrees. The phone rings and it’s Candance. He tells her he can’t hang out Friday night. He has something to do with the family. He accepts for Saturday and agrees to see a movie with her. But he doesn’t look happy about it. After this Jessica goes on and on about Todd. Liz starts to suspect that Jessica is just enjoying the *attention* and it’s not really about Todd at all. But when she asks her she says she does. But it still sounds like she likes *the idea* of Todd more than Todd. Then she gets on Liz liking Jim and Liz snaps on her and tells her it’s not her business and she’s not interested in hearing about her and the Unicorns and Todd. She goes up to her room and slam the door.

The Unicorns ask why she’s not sitting with him the next day and she says he had something important to do. But the truth is she looked for him and couldn’t find him. She says she talked to him earlier. Lila shares the note she got from Jake. It just says “Yes”. She wrote him a note asking if he went to b-ball practice. So it probably means he wants her to come to see him practice. She and Ellen says they’ll go to practice. Lila says she’ll put the note in her scrapbook. Jessica thinks she’ll get one too.

They go to practice and Lila and Ellen cheer for Jake and Rick. Jessica also cheers for Todd. They talk about it on the way home. They’ve all keep score of all the baskets the boys made. Steven comes in that afternoon and his mom tells her Candace calls but it’s clear he’s starting to like Lindsey more-and even goes to run his mom’s grocery store errand- instead of calling her back. Liz gets a note by her locker that tells her she looks really pretty with her hair curled. Its signed her Secret Admirer. She continues to get attention from the boys even tho she drops the makeup and Jessica’s clothes.
Liz finds out from Amy that the Unicorns are spreading rumors that she’s looking for a boyfriend. Then the note makes sense. The boy’s attention makes sense. Immediately she puts her hair back into a ponytail. What must

Todd think? Jessica, Ellen, and Lila see Todd and Rick in a ice-cream shop and Todd doesn’t come sit with her. Lila again presses jessica to go over and sit with Todd. They start talking about bowling and Todd asks about Liz and if she likes bowling. He says he didn’t get the feeling she liked it. The boys make plans with the girls to go bowling on Friday. But Jessica notices Jake and Rick don’t look so sure. Come to think of it Todd wasn’t all that enthusiastic either.

They all go over to Lila’s for dinner to celebrate. She tells Liz about it who reminds her that she made plans with her. She says Liz can come. Then she says maybe then she can find a boyfriend. Jessica says it was a joke. Besides it was her who asked about boys and a new hairstyle. Liz says tell the Unicorns to stop spreading rumors about her or she’ll never speak to Jessica again. The next day she gets asked to the bowling party by Collin, Winston, and Randy. Randy gives her a blue and green bracelet. Todd passes by and Liz wants to cry. Liz tells Amy she’s going to stay home, but Amy says if she doesn’t go she won’t have anyone to talk to. So, because Liz is a pushover she agrees to go. Later, at home Candance shows up at the Wakefields. She’s nice enough, but steven isn’t happy to see her and Liz knows he wishes it was Lindsey. Later, he’s mother gives him a lecture. She sys it’s ok to date more than one person as long as they know. And if he doesn’t like one, he shouldn’t keep going out with her. He says he did like Candance, but then he found out he liked Lindsey more. But by then Candance thought he was serious with her. Alice tells him to work it out.

Later, Steven asks what she’d do. She says he has to be honest with Candance. When they get to the bowling rink, Lila, Ellen, and Jessica find Todd, Jake, and Rick have a lane together. Janet says she thought they had dates but Ellen says they told the boys they’d see them there. They’d talk to them later. It’s ok tho because Janet saved them a lane and in the next lane is Bruce, Aaron, and Tom (Sleeter). After Aaron and Jessica bowl, Aaron offers to get her a soda. Amy, Liz, and Julie get a lane next to Todd. They all decide to compete. Liz makes a strike and then worries that Todd will think she’s Jessica.

Steven comes in with Lindsey and looks happy but then Liz says Candance coming toward him and she doesn’t look happy. Of course, she goes off on him. Steven then gets himself together and pulls Candance off to speak to her in private. Then he goes back to Lindsey and she kisses him on the check. Liz wants to talk to Todd but Amy makes her come with her to talk to Ken. Todd comes over to talk to Liz and he explains that he might have given Jessica the wrong impression and it bothered him. He says he might have been confused at first when she wore her hair differently but he usually knows them apart. At Casey’s, he tells her he wanted to ask her to go bowling but she didn’t seem to like it. He says he knew he was messing up but he wasn’t sure how to fix it. They find out they both like horses and bike riding and he invites her to go bike riding. Then he says he never believed the rumor about Liz. On the way back to the rink, he gives her a kiss on the cheek. Mary tells her Liz went off with Todd. Jessica isn’t bothered. Later Jessica tells Liz it’s ok. She likes Aaron now and Liz tells her about her kiss.

My Thoughts:
The title was a little bit misleading. It’s a kiss on the cheek. Now you might say she’s 12, but I think I was about that age when I got my first kiss and it wasn’t a kiss on the CHEEK. But I guess the writer was trying to keep it PG-which it still *could* have been. I did also think from the previous book and this book things were going to go a little bit differently. I thought Todd really was into Jessica instead of Liz *at first*. But I don’t think it even took me a chapter to realize no. He likes Liz and Jessica is just fooling herself. Though I did not think it was right for Liz to jump HEAD FIRST into the conclusion that Jessica didn’t really like Todd and was more into the attention. I think it was a little bit of both. But she DID move on from him pretty quickly. Just like by the next book, she’ll have moved on from Aaron. Interesting that she picked Bruce for Liz. Don’t they end up together WAY WAY WAY down the line in the Confidentials series?

So you may remember, though I didn't review them in order, that the book before this was "Jessica's Secret" aka "Periods for Everyone!" That wasn't my alternate title, but it should have been. So now Liz is going to do a complete 180 in personality when she realizes she likes Todd. In this case it's actually not a bad transition though.

In a bit of foreshadowing to Sweet Valley Confidential, Liz and Jess both like Todd AGAIN, the same as in Double Love. You might recall the Todd & Jess pairings in Return of the Evil Twin and one of Jessica's Secret Diaries. Clearly Francine always wanted these two clashing personalities to be together. 12-year-old Jessica has such a short attention span, though, that she's not nearly as evil about Liz liking Todd in this book as she is in Double Love.

So, yeah, Jess likes Todd, and Liz finds out pretty quickly. She throws herself a pity party knowing that she can't possibly like Todd now that Jessica does. Thankfully she only says this twice and not for the entire freaking book.

Jess has a series of encounters with Todd that she thinks are kind of meaningful, though she's not sure why Todd keeps mentioning Liz's name (I wonder!). She sits with him at lunch and horns in on his outing with the boys at Casey's. Jessica comes to realize that she is more interested in having a boyfriend to make all the other Unicorns jealous rather than it mattering who that boyfriend actually IS. Thankfully Liz comes to realize this as well. She starts to feel less and less bad about also liking Todd. In other words, she grows a backbone for once.

BUT she won't tell Jessica who she likes no matter what. Jessica is really sweet and nice (surprisingly) at wanting to help Liz look better for her crush. She helps Liz curl her hair and put on a little make-up. She gives her the dress you see her wearing on the cover. However, no matter what she does, Liz still won't tell her who she likes. Liz is smart, because she knows Jessica would flip her shit if she found out. Since Liz won't tell Jessica who she likes, the Unicorns suggest spreading a rumor that Liz is looking for a boyfriend. They think they can tell who she likes from there.

This causes Winston, Colin, and Randy to hit on Liz. Randy gives her a blue/green bracelet to match the dress she wore. Awww. Todd sees this exchange, however, and Liz is mortified. She already had one awkward conversation in which she told Todd she was a horrible bowler.

So, naturally, Amy and Julie have to convince Liz to come bowling on Saturday night with everyone. She doesn't want to, but it all works out for the best. It was supposed to be like a triple date thing between Jess and Todd and other Unicorns and boys, but when Liz gets there nobody is paired up. Jess's lane is next to Aaron's, and she finds herself quite smitten to the point of forgetting about Todd.

Liz leaves her hair down this time because she likes it, regardless of the rumor. But when Todd approaches her at the jukebox, she's convinced he has the wrong twin again (Todd is a little on the slow side, ya'll). Todd is actually surprisingly communicative and articulate, because he tells Liz that he liked her the whole time and that he didn't believe the stupid rumor about her. It's the one time I don't want to punch Todd.

So Todd invites Liz to get away from everyone at Casey's. While there, he kisses her on the cheek! I actually pretty much forgot at this point that the book is called Elizabeth's First Kiss until that happened. Then they go back to the bowling alley holding hands. THEN Liz remembers Jessica's crush. Ruh roh. But Jessica had a jolly good time with Aaron, and she could care less at this point (shocking!). She bids Liz and Todd adieu (probably knowing that she'll have a kid with him later on in life anyway), and Liz tells Amy all about her kiss the next day.

Subplot: Steven has two girlfriends, Candice and Lindsay. He courts them both until he realizes that he likes Lindsay more. Candice is perky and annoying and calls him Stevie, so she'll be hard to get rid of. Steven actually asks LIZ'S advice on the matter. But she is really helpful, and tells him that if he hopes to preserve his friendship/relationship with Lindsay, then he has to be straight with Candice. He sets up bowling with Lindsay for Saturday and a date with Candice on Friday. He tells Candice he is going to be with his family on Saturday. Of course Candice shows up at the bowling alley with the whole rest of the SV universe on Saturday and catches Lindsay and Steven bowling. But Steven explains he only wants to be friends with Candice and then clears up the situation with Lindsay. I don't know any time in real life where that has actually worked out for anybody. It didn't even work on Boy Meets World. But good on Steven, he told Candice the truth and still got to keep Lindsay. And he even told Liz that he liked having her for a sister since her advice worked out so well!

This was definitely an "out-of-character" Sweet Valley book, that's for sure.

Alternate Title
: "No Cooties Here"

Tagline: "Elizabeth is in love!" (That's a strong word for a 12-year-old.)

On a Scale of 1-10, How Annoying is Elizabeth?
 0. She's really cool in this one.

On a Scale of 1-10, How Sociopathic is Jessica? Erm 3. She spreads a rumor about Liz, but it's pretty harmless in this case.

The Big Deal: Double and triple dates at the bowling alley

Lingering Questions: Why did Jessica get a Special Edition for her first kiss (which wasn't even her first kiss - remember Josh Angler?) while Elizabeth gets a regular book?

Cover: Good or Bad?: More stripes! It's actually Liz on the cover, her hair is down and curled, and she is wearing Jess's blue/green dress. But it's incredibly un-sexy and un-dress-like. This scene totally happens in the book! It's a pretty good cover, though Liz looks a bit constipated.

Quotes from the Book: "'Who do YOU think would be a good choice for me, Jessica?'
'Well, all the Unicorns think Bruce Patman is really cute,' Jessica said tentatively.
'You know I don't like Bruce, Jess,' Elizabeth said."
Not YET, anyway, Liz.

"'Don't be so defensive, Jessica,' Lila said. 'You've got to admit that even though Elizabeth is your twin, she's not too fashion-conscious. In fact, most of the time, she dresses like she's back in elementary school.'"
So why does Jess always borrow her clothes then?

"She knew that Jessica liked Todd, and it wasn't right for her to like somebody that her sister already liked."
Says who?

"Even though she knew that she looked great, she couldn't help feeling uncomfortable. The curls and the makeup and the clothes didn't seem right. She didn't feel like herself."
In other words, she didn't feel like a grandma.

"Amy looked at her. 'I like it better down, Elizabeth.'
'So do I,' Elizabeth said."
SO WEAR IT THAT WAY!!

"'Tell those Unicorns to stop spreading rumors about me.' She leaned forward, her blue-green eyes flashing with anger. 'Or I'm never speaking to you again!'"
Wow, Elizabeth. I think that's the most backbone you've ever exhibited.

"The bowling alley was crowded, and the air was filled with the rumble of bowling balls and the clatter of falling pins."
Funny, I had expected the bowling alley to be filled with the sounds of birds squawking and dogs barking.

Moral of the Story: It's okay to like the same guy as your sister, because she will get over him in a week anyway!

Final Rating: Three stars. They were all so normal in this one that I was frightened. But, consequently, I really enjoyed the book.

The 1990 children’s book”Elizabeth’s First Kiss” (Sweet Valley Twins and Friends ,Number 43) was created by Francine Pascal and written by Jamie Suzanne. The book is about a secret crush that 12 year old Elizabeth and her twin sister have on school mate Todd Wilkins. Thei book also features their older brother Steven Wakefield who has a crush on a schoolmate named Lindsay while he is being pursued by Candice who is another schoolmate . Elizabeth asks Jessica how to get a boy to show an interest in her. During the conversation, Jessica describes how she was able to get a boy she likes named Todd Wilkins to like her. Elizabeth did not tell Jessica that she too likes Todd. The conflicting relationships are resolved at an amazing bowling alley party attended by many Sweet Valley sixth graders. Elizabeth and Todd bond; her twin sister Jessica drops her interest in Todd when she meets Aaron Dallas at the bowling party, and their brother Steven tells Candice that he likes her but he is entering a dating relationship with Lindsay. The book ends with how Steven, Jessica, and Elizabeth Wakefield are able to resolved their interpersonal conflicts, maintain school friendships, and bond with schoolmates they know and admire. The techniques they develop and share with each other will forever anchor a lifetime of interpersonal and loving relationships (P).

I like how Elizabeth’s first kiss is just regular book #43, whereas Jessica’s first kiss warrants a whole special edition! That reminds me, I should re-read that one soon, too.

Anyway, this was just as cute as I remembered it being. Of course, continuity-wise none of this matches up with the first Sweet Valley High book, but I’ve given up trying to make all these different timelines match anyway.

Warning *SPOILERS*

In this book, Elizabeth develops a crush on Todd Wilkins, a boy who Jessica is also madly in love with. Elizabeth doesn't think she stands a chance against Jessica and keeps her crush a secret, but also wants to, well, get him to notice her. So she goes to Jessica for help on how to get a guy to notice her. Jessica is ready to help her and begins giving her lots of advice and make up tips and outfit help, but during this, Jessica tries to figure out who her twin is crushing on. Elizabeth refuses to tell her, so Jessica guesses. And when Jess gets to school the next day, she tells her friends about it and they come up with a little 'harmless' prank. They spread a rumor over the school that Elizabeth is looking for a boyfriend and that's why she's wearing her hair down with make up and a dress to school.

Is Todd really interested in Jessica or is he after Elizabeth? I'll let you read it and find out!
I enjoy reading this book every once in a while. It's pretty good and I like it!
