Arthur Castle, an exchange student from a small country called Santa Dora, is coming to Sweet Valley Middle School and the sixth graders can't wait! They have planned all kinds of welcoming events and parties for him.
Arthur doesn't want anyone to fuss over him. He wants more than anything to be treated just like any other boy. He also wants to discover what real American kids are like. When Arthur meets Elizabeth Wakefield, his dream comes true. Their friendship grows quickly, and soon he even tells her his deepest secret—that he is actually a prince!
The next day his secret is all over the school, and Arthur is furious. He thought he had made a true friend in Elizabeth. How could she betray his trust!
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
In this one, Sweet Valley has a new temp exchange student. Dude falls in love with Elizabeth Wakefield, and she finds out he's actually a royal prince, wow! He wants this to stay secret so he can experience life as an ordinary boring ass American teen. Unfortunately, he spills all this to Jessica, mistaking her for Elizabeth. Jessica swiftly ruins everything like the lil shit she is!
Also, the kids of sweet valley want to think Confederate flags are good gifts to give to foreign exchange students???????
The title of this book makes no sense at all. But, it did make me wish I had a copy of the SVH book in which Arthur comes back, because I only vaguely remember it.
Princess Elizabeth Jessica wasn’t interested in Santa Dora, until she found out Arthur Castle (an exchange student) is coming. Jessica is doing a report on the Royal family and Elizabeth is drawing a map. Jessica and the rest of the Unicorns will also be giving Arthur a special welcome. Liz will also be doing a report and and doing something special for him in the Sixers. Jessica is supposed to do the dishes but she talks Liz into it so she can go to a special meeting with the rest of the Unicorns.
At the meeting, Lila comments that reports are kind of boring when Mary asks how Jessica’s report is coming. Mary thinks the Royal family looks great and she bets that if your Royal (or a princess) you’d never have to do the dishes. Lila doesn’t think the special welcome is enough. So, Jessica comes up with the idea that they can throw a Santa Dora festival and all the kids can combine all the things they’re going to do to honor Arthur. Lila thinks the idea is fantastic. So much better than an article in the Sixers. Later, Liz says if she thinks he’ll be much more impressed with their history.
Liz notices Arthur at the front of the classroom the next day. He’s olive with dark hair. Amy is surprised he’s not dressed more like a prince. The teacher ssays they’ll be studying his culture and Arthur says he’s honored. The Unicorns then spontansiously run to to the front of the classroom and start to do a welcome cheer. Liz is embarrassed by this. Arthus is a little embarrassed. Lila presents him with a Santa Dorian pastry. He thanks them but almost chocks on him. Liz sees why it’s dry. They’re doing temperatures and he can’t figure out the numbers. Liz introduces himself and explains to him how thermometers are read in America. Arthur likes Liz immediately. She’s more quiet and reserved than the girls he knows. He asks can they walk home together. Liz says she has questions for him for her article. But he has a question for her. Why would a girl call herself a Unicorn? Liz says it’s a long story.
All the students have questions for Arthur. Caroline wants to know who the most famous peson in Santa Dora is. He says Jaques marin (a famous painter). Charlie and Jerry talk to him about the model they’re building of the Chateau Royale. They want to know do they still use the old guns. He says yes but only on occasions and yes the Royals still live there. Liz can tell he’s getting unfomfortable with the questions. She how it feels to be a celebrity. He says he doesn’t mind answering questions about his country but what he really wants is to learn about theres. Liz then tells him about the Unicorns. He wants to know if Liz is a Unicorn and she says no but her sister is. He wants to know why she’s beautiful and special. Liz blushses and says they’ll have plenty of questions. He says he looks forward to answering them.
Liz meets with Amy and Sophia and tells them that Arthur wants to learn more about America. They plan to give him a tour. Liz says her idea is to give him a scrapbook. Amy says she can put in some of her best baseballl cards. (Particularly the ones with the LA Angels). Julie says she can put in a program from the American music festial she went to. They can also put in some pages about music and television shows. Liz says she has some buttons from the last election they can do some pages about American politics. They can also include some 4rth of July recipes. They can even include a page of slang. Meanwhile, Jessica is at home unhappy that Liz dragged Arthur away before she and the Unicorns could snag him and question him. Liz says she’ll have plenty of time tomorrow. Jessica says they’ll have to talk to him first thing in the morning and ask him to sit with them. Liz tells Jessica about how he might like something American (when Jessica says they can give him more of their pastries) and she tells her about the scrapbook. Jessica says she has a picture of Johnny Buck and a flag sticker they can put in the scrap book (Even though she doesn’t think he’ll be impressed).
Amy, Liz, and Julie take Arhur to a toy store and has so many questions (like what a F risbee is and what to do with it). He has two bags full of thins, In them are a football, a baseball bat, a stuffed Texas Longhorn deer, a pair of Indian moccasins, a jackknife, a Johnny Buck album, a Confederate army cap, two pairs of jeans, and books (Oz, Little House on the Prarie, Huckleberry Finn, and the Texas Rangers. There’s also a video tape of Alice and Wonderland. He even buys the frisbee and they play with it in the parking lot. His attention is caught by some kids skating. He makes Liz to teach him to stake. They go to Amy’s for milk and cookies.
At Amy’s they bombard him with questions about his life in Santa Dora. He tells them shly his father is in the govermeant and his mother ‘does many things”. Then he makes an excuse and leaves. Amy points out that he doesn’t seem anxious to answer there questions. The next day, the Unicorns organize a sing a long. Liz notices he looks relieed after it’s over. He asks can they go to the beach, but Liz says she has to baby sit. They go later on. Liz wonders if he goes to the beach but he tells the beaches in Euro[e are pver crpwded. He says they aren’t sandy and there’s no surfing or skateboarding. Liz says they should head back, but before that they stop at Casey’s for chocolate milkshakes. Arthur insists on paying. He accidently drops some money and when Liz goes to pick it up she sees his face on the bills.
He confesses he’s the Prince of Queen Stephanie and King Helmet. He says that’s why he didn’t talk about his life. When people find out who he is they treat him like a celebrity and he wants to just be regular. Liz says she’ll keep his secret. He tries to find liz the next to make sure she knows how important it is to keep his secret, but he misses homeroom because his mother calls and she’s not in Science class. He sees jessica and thinking she’s Liz he tells her how important it is not to tell his secret. Jessica can’t imagine why he’d want this keept a secret. She promised but how can she *not* tell the Unicorns? So, she calls a special meeting and tells them all. They don’t believe her at first, but she says she got it from him. Jessica has proof and shows them a picture of the Royal family in her book.
Later that day. Jessica goes to the library to work on her project. Arthur shows up with skates and he and Liz gives him a lesson. When he leaves her he tells her when he’s with her he can almost forget. He asks her to go with him to the party the Unicorns are throwing. At the Unicorn meeting they decide they need a throne for the party. Jessica has also checked out a book on etiquette. Mary says she doesn’t think she can curtsy but Jessica does it perfectly. The rest of the meeting she teach’s the Unicorns and they brush up on their etiquette. Liz goes in jessica’s room because their about to go to the movies with her parents. Jessica is trying to pick something out for the party tho it’s days away. Liz wants to know why it’s important. She says because it’s in honor of Arthur. She says it’ll be catered. Liz says he’ll be more happy at a Little Leauge game with hotdogs and hamburgers. Jessica asks if Liz is going to the party and she’s about to tell her she’s going with Arthur but gets interrupted.
The scrapbook is coming along. Jimmy Underwood gives him a Confederate flag. Brooke Dennis gives a signed TV guide from Kent keller. There’s also a postcard of “Old Faithful”, a Denver Brcoss penant, and a pizza coupon that says they’ll deliever anywhere. Someone also gives stamps. At school, liz wants to hear about Arthurs trip to Disney world but he’s surrounded by Unicorns. Someone has sent him flowers with a purple ribbon and she notices Jessica give him two cookies and curtsey. Arthur suspects that they’ve found out. It’s confirmed with Janet leads him to table and says she thought he might like some privacy and then calls him “Your Higness”. Jessica tells him they’re all happy to have a member of the Royal family with him. Arthur thanks them politely but turns angry. Liz must have broken her promise. She’s just like the others. But she seemed so different. To his credit, he treats them all respectfully (as a Prince should).
He confronts her later. Liz says she didn’t tell. He tells her he trusted her and she ruinted the only chance he had to be normal and then hangs up the phone on her. jess later asks liz if she’s heard. Liz wants to know how *she* heard and wonders if jessica was the one who told. Jessica just says she heard from the Unicorns. Liz tells Jessica Arthur thinks she told and might never speak to her again. Jessica apologizes and says asks if he’ll get over it. Liz says no she doesn’t think he will. Then she tries to explain why Arthur just wanted to feel normal. Jessica says she’ll tell him it’s not her fault. Liz doesn’t think it’ll do any good.
Amy and Julie start to doubt there idea for the scrap book, but Liz tells him all the Amrican stuff with be special to him. The Uniconrs take Arthur to a museum and a symphony. There’s a special presentation given to him by Lila’s father. Liz misses Arthur and knows the scrapbook will be her way of proving her friendship will endur. Liz asks why he’s doing all this. He tells her if he doesn’t it reflects on his country so he has to do these things even if they bore him.
Jessica at first feels as big a deal as other then she gets bored with being just another one of his ladies in waiting. But Arthur does pick Jessica to be his date at the party. (Even tho he doesn’t seem all that excited about it0. Liz decides to stay home that night. She’d planned to go see what the other kids projects would be like. But she changes her mind when she sees all the kids fawning over him. She tells her mom she cant go to the party when she knows Arthur will be unhappy. Jessica tells her shes going to miss the party of the year. She’s all dolled up in a pink and white dress with a lace apron and head piece.
But Arthur acts grumpy and he won’t dance with Jessica or eat any of the food. She asks why and he says this is the stuff he does all the time. He just wants to be normal and be treated like a regular kidd. Jessica feels rooton. If if wasn’t for her he would have been able to do what he wanted to do instead of what the Unicorns wanted him to do. Jessica confides that it was her in the hall that he mistook her for, A happy look crosses his face and he thanks her for telling him the truth. He asks where Liz is and Jessica tells him she didn’t come because she felt bad. So, he says he’ll go to her. He goes to the Wakefields and apologizes to her. liz says that’s ok they can make up for the time they wasted. He says they he can’t believe she and Jess are so different. Liz defends her sister and says she couldn’t help getting carried away. Arthur asks her to a party with his parents and she says yes. He asks her to go back to the party but she says she can’t she’s working on a special party.
Later Jessica says he seemed much happier at the party. He danced, ate, and even sat on his throne. Liz scolds hre for tellin Arthur’s secret. Jessica apologizes and gives her some deserts from the party. She says pass but maybe Steven will eat them. They go down for ice cream and jessica sas she wishes there was something she could do to make it up to Arhur. Then she gets a look in her eyes. At school, Arthur is carrying his own lunch, and the Unicorns cut him. Jerry in class blows a spit ball at him and there’s a frog in his desk. He tells (Amy, Jessica, and Liz) that Lousi snatched a brownie out of his hand and Charlie almost knocked him down. He says he thinks something is going on. Jessica tells him she told everyone that he wants to be treated like a normal kid and then asks how he likes it.
He tells jessica he sees Janet and then swamps his jello for her brownie. He then invites Jessica to go to the party with him and Liz. Mr. Clark announces a special presentation and they present him with the scrapbook. He loves it! Jerry calls his name ‘Hey Prince” and sails a paper airplane into his chest. He laughs (He tells Jessica he loves being a normal kid). Jessica and liz meet the King and Queen who thank them for showing their son a good time. They agree as they watch him with his parents, he might have wanted to be normal but he makes a great prince.
My Thoughts When I read this a very old episode from a long ago tv series came to mind. Not many will remember this show but it was called Rags to Riches. You can You Tube it. The epsidoe was called “Russian Holiday”. I think this was the ONLY show considred a musical that I will EVER like. So it was about a billionaire (Nick Foley) who adopted five girls (Rose, Diane, Marva, Patti, and Mickey). There was a fifth in the pilot (Nina) but she didn’t stick around long. Anyways in this episode there’sNick (whose a businessman for a food company) is getting ready to make some kind of deal with a Russian man and he and his son come to his house. The son’s name is Alex (and ironally looks a lot like how the book described Arthur (tall, dark). Only Alex (unlike Arthur) isn’t interested in learning American ways. That is until Rose, Marva, and Diane take him to the pier to show him what fun is. By the end of the episode Rose has to talk him into going back to Russia. I guess the similaries are Arthur and Alex were both important people. I’m not sure what Alex’s father did but he just always seemed to be of high rank because he has security people. Of course, Arthur was a Royal. Then they both becameEXTREMLY into American culture. It even reminded me of the similar way Liz, Amy, and Julie were taking Arthur around to how Marva, Diane, and Rose were showing Alex a good time. Then there was the “friendship” of Rose and Alex and Liz and Arthur. Liz, tho should have figured out IMMEDIATELY what happened. It took her WAY to long! Then she should have just told him. “You do know I have a twin right/” Everything would have been cleared up in one chapter. And why was the name of this “Princess Elizabeth”. Since this is a twins book there was no way he was gonna propose to her and then fly her off to Europe to get married. and make her his princess. Rating: 5

I mean.. it was pretty obvious Arthur was a prince because of the front cover and title? lol So Arthur visits sweet valley from Santa Dora (Europe) an exchange student for 2 weeks. All the sixth grade has different activities/projects assigned to learn about the country. Liz treats Art differently and they strike up a friendship, then the whole school finds out who he really is (as he thought Jess was Liz one day at school, and of course she blabbed to the unicorns) classic Jess was a total bitch and let Liz cop the blame til much later, and makes herself out to be a hero lol. Liz and Art make up and they attend a special party with Jess at the end of the book. As usual, Jess gets away with her shitty behavior haha.
Wasn't there a SVH TV ep about a prince visiting from Santa Dora and has a relationship with Jess? I'm sure there was. I need to rewatch that show!
A royalty vs ordinary kid story. Jessica stirs things up when she reveals a secret that Elizabeth was keeping about the visiting exchange student. Hurt feelings and disappointment are forgiven and pushed aside once the real truth of the matter comes out.
