Amy Moves In
Amy and Liz are almost done with their project. It’s a chart that has an African elephant on it. (I’m not sure what this project is yet). Oh it’s about endangered species. Overall, what we should know is that while Liz thinks it’s great having a twin sister, there are things that she can do with Amy that she can’t with Jessica. Amy invites Liz to sleep over, but her mother says not tonight. She wants the family to spend some time together. She wants them all to go out to dinner. Amy says she’ll finish up and bring the chart to school tomorrow. Jessica fusses at Liz when she comes home because she’s been so busy with the project, she hasn’t seen her in days. Liz reminds her she’s been busy too (with the Unicorns and with Aaron Dallas). Jessica basically has been bored and nags Liz about spending all her time with Amy. Liz promises when the project is over, she’ll spend more time with Jessica.

Amy isn’t where she said she’ll be the next day and she’s not in homeroom. Liz worries where Amy could be but she has time to get there before science class. Caroline comes up to Liz and asks about “what happened last night”. Liz has no idea what their talking about. Caroline says Amy’s house burned down last night. Jessica comes up to them then and says Caroline broke her ankle. Caroline says no it was her leg. She broke it when she jumped out the window. She missed the fire man’s net. Liz thinks about how if she would have stayed she might have been trapped in the house. Caroline says she got taken to the hospital. The stories get wilder and wilder and all day long people come up to Liz. She has to tell them she doesn’t know any more than they do.

Then she worries if the house went up in flames so did their project. (Unless someone saved it). The teacher says they should wait and see what happened. The project isn’t due yet (until Wednesday). So, they have time to get it in. At first, she’s relieved but then Peter tells her it might be a month before she gets out. Liz and Sophia go to Amy’s house and it’s confirmed it really burnt down to nothing. Tim Davis says he heard Amy broke both arms and legs. Surprisingly, Amy is there when Liz gets home and tells her everything is GONE! When left alone Amy tells her no one knows how the fire got started and the insurance company will have to look it over and do a report. Amy tells Liz she tripped because she didn’t tie her shoelace (but don’t tell anyone that part).

Her dad and mom will be staying with her uncle. They’re going to start immediately looking for a new house. Amy will be allowed to stay there for a while. Liz Is the first to sign Amy’s cast. Jessica is with the Unicorns at Casey’s. They make her promise as soon as she finds out the truth to tell them. They say everything’s been dead since Aaron’s party but right now none of them can throw a party. Mary’s mother gives Jessica a ride home and they ride past Amy’s house. Jessica sees the result of the fire and can’t imagine what she’d do if she lost all her clothes. When she gets home Steven is watching tv and something comes on about the fire. Steven tries to tell her something but she brushes him off. When she goes upstairs she finds Amy in Liz’s room. Jessica hounds her about details of what happened and Amy (whose flatters) tells her but exaggerates a little (and doesn’t quite tell her how she broke her arm). She agrees to talk to some of the other kids after dinner.

Jessica calls her a hero. Mary comes by and brings Max. Lila and Ellen comes by. Lila with expensive chocolates. Liz can’t figure out why the Unicorns even care, but her mother tells her it’s good for Amy to talk about it (the doctors say). The Unicorns are sympathetic. They tell her they think she was brave to jump out the window. She tries to tell them what happened but their so busy admiring her they cut her off. Amy’s so happy their listening to her she doesn’t acorrect them and goes

She tells them about all the smoke and the ambulance ride. She said there was a police escort and the ambulance ran all the red light. (Even tho she doesn’t know if this is true of not). All the Unicorns sign the cast. They ask what started the fire. Amy says she didn’t know. They ask when she’ll be back in school and she says tomorrow. Lila says she’ll shop with her and until then she has some clothes she can borrow. They then have to go and Liz comes in the room. Amy tells her about the visit and shows her the signatures. She says they can be nice when they want to. Liz thinks only when they are up to something but doesn’t say anything to ruin it for Amy.

That night they play Scrabble and listen to Johnny Buck. Alice gives them permission to stay up an hour later as long as their homework is done. Liz says they should work on their science project but since Jessica acts like she doesn’t have a life without them (and not interested) Amy says the project can wait one night. She really doesn’t feel up to starting it all over. Liz lends amy some pj’s that night that are loose. Then she helps her with the buttons when Amy says she can’t. Amy says she wishes she hadn’t lost everything and Liz says she can’t get back what she lost but she’ll try to at least make things easy for her. Later that night tho, she hears Amy crying.

Jessica (in bed) thinks of how Liz is trying to hog Amy and leave her out again. The next morning, Jessica offers to braid Amy’s hair while Liz goes down to the kitchen to make croissants. Jessica gets them all a ride to school in Mr. Fowler’s new car. But when the car gets there, it’s full of Unicorns. Liz says she’ll walk. Amy says she’ll walk to but Liz tells her to go ahead. Lila says she can sit up front so her arm won’t be mashed. She makes Ellen get out and get in the back. Liz hears Amy telling some kids about how thick the smoke was and how Amy jumped out the window. Liz doesn’t say anything when she’s asked to comment. We find out that Amy didn’t take out the ashes and dump them in a bag so, she knows it’s her fault her family is homeless. Liz is told that Mr. Bowman wants to meet with her for an idea for the Sixers. Meanwhile, at lunch the Unicorns are falling all over themselves catering to Amy (getting her lunch).

Then they make her tell her story again. Tamera asks how the fire started. Amy doesn’t get a chance to dodge the question because Ellen tells them Brooke Dennis is about to have a party. Lila wants to get back to what happened to Amy and they turn their attention back to her. Ellen isn’t happy about this. Amy is back to not being one of her favorite people despite rescuing her in the kidnapper’s house when they went to save Mary. Before the Sixer’s meeting, Liz tells Amy she’s had an idea that they can write a piece on the fire and do it interview style. Even Mr. Bowman thinks this is a good way to do it. Amy turns them both down and says she’d rather write it. She gets a little snippy with Liz but doesn’t quite know how to tell her why she doesn’t want to do it her way without telling her (her) secret. (Amy told Liz they’re already working on the science project. Then asks if they have to do *everything* together).

When they get home, Alice asks Amy what her favorite cake is and that she and Liz will make it for dinner. Amy says chocolate. Jessica comes home with a bag full of clothes for Amy from the Unicorns. When they go upstairs to try them on, Liz confides to Alice how strangely Amy acted. Alice tells her Amy suffered a tragic situation. She needs Liz to be patient. But when she comes in her room, it’s a mess. She can’t get over how well Amy and Jessica are getting along. Liz tries to get Amy to work on their project but Jessica tells her later. Their doing an experiment. Jessica then gives Amy a makeover in all the Unicorns clothes (purple designer top from Lila, pink drawstring pants of hers, pink beads of Mary’s). Then they decide they want a snack and send Liz to get it promising to clean up.

When she gets back the room isn’t cleaned up. Clothes are just stuffed under the bed. Jessica and Amy are about to play Monopoly but it’s only set for two. Liz tries to do her work but she’s distracted by them. She then tries to read a magazine but they take it from her and start talking about fashion and then boys (Aaron and Ken). Liz starts to feel resentful. Amy is acting like a Unicorn. But she remembers what her mother said. She offers to help write the story but Amy says she doesn’t need her help. That night, Liz sleeps with her old Koala bear. She wakes up to hear Amy crying. She says she just had a bad dream.

Two days go by. Amy makes no effort to do anything for it but continues to hang out with Jessica. Then there’s the way she orders Liz around. YESSS! I GET THIS SO MUCH! Then she’s been avoiding Liz and hanging out more and more with the Unicorns. It’s one of those days she’s eating with them with Sophia makes a comment that the Unicorns must not have anything other to talk about or else they’d be sick of Amy talking about she jumped out the window and missed the net, how the ambulance almost crashed when it ran a red light, and how the smoke flames forced her to jump out the window. Now Liz sees why Amy doesn’t want her to help with the story. Amy has changed! Amy comes over and asks Liz to help her with her locker.

Julie and Sophia tell her Liz isn’t her slave and point out she’s being bossy but Liz doesn’t want an argument and just does it. Liz tries to talk to her but Amy just tells her later. Then Jessica comes to walk her to class. Later, Liz finds Amy crying. She says her parents aren’t having any luck finding a new house. She says she has no idea how long she’ll have to stay there. She won’t be happy until she’s found her own place. Then Liz can get rid of her. She’s also sick of wearing other people’s clothes. Liz is close to saying she’s sick of sharing her space with her too but her mom interrupts and makes her clean up her room and the bathroom. Of course, Amy makes up an excuse why she can’t help.

The Unicorns approve highly of Amy’s new and improved appearance and says they hope it won’t be wasted like Liz’s. Amy isn’t crazy about how they talk about Liz and wants to say something but doesn’t. They ask her if they think Liz is babyish and says they bet she sleeps with a doll. Amy says no it’s a stuffed Koala and this just makes them put down Liz more. Of course, its not that long before it’s all over school. Sophia is about to tell her but Bruce comes up to her and calls her “Baby Bear” and he and Jerry start calling her “Baby Bear”. Then Sophia tells her about what the Unicorns said. She puts it together pretty quickly. It was Amy,

Liz confronts Amy when she comes to turn in her Sixer’s article. Amy says she has the right to tell the truth, but Liz says since when does she care about the truth after all the stuff she’s been saying. Their all lies. Amy says she doesn’t have to stand there and take it, but then Liz starts to tell her off for being a slob and how she’s starting to change. Mr. Bowman comes in. Amy takes this an her cue to leave. Mr. Bowman tells Liz the same thing Alice does and lets her see the story. It’s the same lies she’s been telling. She wonders if she should tell Mr. Bowman but then decides to just wait on it and try to talk to Amy again.

Amy is polite to dinner, but later tells her she’s moving into Jessica’s room (with no problem of carrying her clothes), she’ll write her story *her* way, and she has her own ideas about the project. The twins have a fight. Jessica is embarrassed about the “Baby Bear” stuff because now it’s being bounced back on *her*. Liz tells her if her friends wouldn’t have told. Jessica tells her if she wouldn’t have slept with it in front of her friend. Liz tells her Amy isn’t her friend. Jessica says telling about the bear was an accident but she’s right. She’s not her friend because she’s a better friend. Liz breaks down and cries.

Jessica starts to vent to Amy about Bruce. Amy basically tells her either tell him to shut up about it or she shut up about it. Then she thinks of Liz and starts to cry. Jessica offers to go shopping with her to help her pick out some new clothes with the Unicorns (thinking she’s upset too about the same thing), but it doesn’t help. Ellen comes by and tries to get the Unicorns to come help her decorate with Brooke’s party but the Unicorns instead tell her they’re going to help Amy pick out clothes first. They of course, take her to a designer shop. Amy says she can’t afford them and they aren’t her style. She suggests a more affordable store (Wallace’s)

Well shopping she starts to notice, Lila’s ignoring her because she’s offended that Amy turns down her choices. And Ellen is being even more rude to her. She tells Jessica she wants to leave but Jessica tells her she could be a little more “friendly” (grateful). And then she doesn’t want Ellen to win (by thinking she ran her off). She tells her she needs to finish her science project but Jessica tells her Mrs. Caxton will give her more time. So, Saturday and Sunday she hangs out with the Unicorns. Scared to loss the only friends she has left.

Liz finishes her rain forest project. She forgets everything else. Caroline comes up to her and says that Broke Dennis has invited the cast of Car Capers and Dynamo will be playing. The Unicorns still let Amy sit with them but no ones interested in the fire anymore. Brooke Dennis is now the flavor of the week at their table. Amy tries to ask Mrs. Caxton for more time but she tells her she’s had no trouble writing so it’s still due the next day. Her mother picks her up and she gets good news that she’ll be given a smaller cast and that her parents have found some leads on new houses. But there’s bad news the insurance company will soon tell them what caused the fire. The truth comes out when Mr. Bowman stops them and he finds out the *real* reason she broke her arm. He tells her to come in tomorrow so they can talk about her story. Her parents tell her when it comes out they’d love to read and share it with the rest of her family.

In the end, everything works out. Amy apologizes to Liz and they make up. Amy (with Liz’s help) writes another story for the Sixers. Mr. Bowman says it’s not as dramatic but it covers the basis (who, what, where, when). They just need what caused it. But Amy finds out it was bad wiring. Liz and Amy work again on their science project. They were working on the rain forest model before for the last project. Then they find some of their dad’s National Geographic magazines and get some pictures and remake the chart. They take the oral test and both get A’s. The Suttons find a house a block away from the Wakefield’s. Jessica doesn’t really care that Amy lied (no surprise there) but she says she wouldn’t tell the rest of the Unicorns.

My Thoughts:
There were some things I could relate to in this. Many years back we had a house fire. In my case something on the stove caught fire because someone walked away from the stove. No, it wasn’t me, but what was cooking went up quick (in flames) and the smoke detector went off. I was told to call the fire department and they came quickly to access the damage. The kitchen was badly damaged. Some things had to be redone. For a while we had to move from a relatives house, to a hotel, to a apartment. Luckily we didn’t lose a lot. Some things got misplaced because we had to have a company come and get a lot of our stuff out while people remodeled the kitchen. (Serve Pro). I’ll never forget how irritated I was that all my stuff had to be packed up and moved (and then when it got back it was all in disarray).

I think reading this book made me more appreciative *today* that it could have *all* been gone. At the time, I remember just wishing they’d hurry up and get finished. While it was interesting living in a hotel and apartment as months went by I found myself wishing the people would just hurry up and get finished. Sleeping at the relatives house grew old because I wanted to get back to my own bed. Another way I related to this was through Liz. I had a relative stay with me after a surgery and she did JUST like Amy. Stuff I knew she could do she’d call me and ask me to do. She STAYED making me bring her stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I’d do it but I QUICKLY started to lose patience with it. There were also other things she’d do like I like it completely quiet when I sleep. She would have on the television and her tablet at the same time. And unlike Amy she was NOT in a hurry to get to her own place. So, I REALLY got it!

Amy Moves In... or the one where you can see glimmers of SVH's Amy shine through. It's always baffled me how much Amy changed from SVT to SVH, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one since this book starts to set the stage. When given the chance, Amy throws in with the Unicorns because it's easier than having to actually deal with her problems. Which then causes new problems and, well, you get the idea.

An interesting one that really made me lose all liking for Amy, and I'd quite liked her before! I pounced on this one at the library due to its title - Amy Moves in by Marilyn Sachs being a favourite of mine.

I really like the stories created by Francine Pascal and I am currently collecting her creations...I can relate to this story with jealousy between the twins.
