Jessica Wakefield is convinced that her sister, Elizabeth, is perfect. Who else is as smart, friendly and creative as her identical twin? So when Sweet Valley Middle School announces it will be choosing a Model Student, Jessica launches a secret campaign to make sure Elizabeth wins.
But Jessica doesn't count on what happens. As soon as word gets out about the contest, Elizabeth takes becoming a Model Student a bit too seriously. She starts telling everyone what to wear, what to eat, and how to act. Elizabeth's become positively bossy! What will it take to turn Elizabeth the Impossible back into the girl everyone knows and loves?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Elizabeth the Impossible Pamela McDonald is admiring Liz’s new outfit and is telling her it matches her eyes perfectly. All of a sudden this girl has appeared from absolutely nowhere and has become obsessed with Elizabeth. To the point where she’s even started to dress like her and wear her hair like her. Liz says she got it with some of the money she got for writing the article in the Tribune. Pamela praises the article and tells her she always wanted to be a writer but she’d never be as good as Liz. No one is.
Liz cringes and Amy and Sophia kind of snicker. Mr. Edwards makes an announcement that one of their students entered a essay contest in Teen Scene magazine. It’s the one Liz entered about being an individual. Mr. Edwards says the winner of the contest is Elizabeth. Liz can’t believe it beat out thousands of kids all over the country. The prize is 200.00 and an all-expense paid trip for two to Los Angelos to visit the magazine’s headquarters. Her essay will also be features in an upcoming issue.
Pamela tells her she’s the most talented person in the entire world. Liz wonders who she’ll get Pamela to let up on her. Pamela leaves but offers to walk Liz home after school. Amy tho says she’s coming to her house. Pamela says she’ll call her the next day and maybe they can hook up over the weekend. Jessica has to put up posters with the rest of the Unicorns for the new encyclopedias they won-that have arrived- Caroline tells her the news about Liz. The Unicorns suggest that Jessica either hit Liz up to help her buy a purple belt she saw or take *her* shopping. But Jessica says she’s not telling Liz how to spend her money. They all gush over Liz a little. (She’s talent. She’s modest). Todd comes over to the table and congratulates his girlfriend. Amy tells him just don’t let it get to her head. Mr and Mr. Wakefield take Liz (Jessica and Steven) to Guido’s Pizza to celebrate.
In homeroom, Mr. Davis gives everyone a blue book that says “Are You The Model Student”. He explains it announces a nationwide search for the best middle school students in the country. Each middle school gets to nominate one candidate. According to the book, a model student gets good grades, is respected by teachers and students, and is conscientious, friendly, cheerful, and trustworthy, has a good sense or humor, and assist teachers. They’re creative, participate in performing arts or sports, and is well organized, neat, and healthy. Ellen asks Jessica is she a model student but after reading this long list Jessica says no. She’d have to make too many changes (get organized, give up junk, exercise).
Lila and Ellen agree no one is that perfect. Jessica says she’s going to nominate Liz. Only Mandy points out the teachers and principal has to do it. So, Jessica says she’ll just have to make sure they do. Lila and Ellen tell her to slow her role. They will be others considered. Jessica says that’s why she can’t waste time. Mandy says she better not let Liz know what she’s up to. She probably won’t like it. So, she tells them that’s why they have to keep their mouths shut.
She decides the best way to go about it is to talk to each teacher individually. She starts with Mr. Bowman and suggest they reprint Liz’s essay in the Sixers. He says he’ll give the nomination some thought. Next she talks to Ms. Langberg (the gym teacher). She pretends to leave some sneakers in the gym and then talks up Liz’s gymnastic abilies and how dedicated she is too practing. She puts it in her head to consider Liz for the contest because Mr. Bowman said he was. Then she reminds Mrs. Arnette what a great job Liz did on the social studies project. At lunch, Jessica learns that Bruce is also talking himself up to the teachers and principal.
As if he’s heard them talking about him, Bruce comes over to the Unicorner and says Coach Cassels might nominate him. Jessica who before thought Bruce didn’t stand a chance against Liz, thinks she might have to reconsider if he got a teacher to want to nominate him. Plus, he might have something up his sleeve. She decides she’ll have to put in an extra effort. She goes to Mr. Nydick and tells him that Liz just got finished coloring and lettering an entire book of maps. He agrees that she *is* the model student. She tells Ms. Wyler that Liz helped her understand percentages. She runs into Mr. Edwards and thanks him for making the announcement.
Then she tells him how much Liz is a model for the rest of them which is why she’s so popular (and has quite a few fans). At the end of the day, Jessica is satisfied and thinks she might be a campaign manager one day. Pamela runs into Liz after school and tells her she wants to start a write-in-campaign for her. They’ll write up a statement to Mr. Clark and get students to sign it. Liz tells Pamela she isn’t interested. Pamela looks flabbergasted but Liz tells she’s got to meet Todd. Todd says he doesn’t agree with the petition but he does think she’d make a great candidate. Jessica hears from Aaron that Bruce is definitely going to get nominated and a good thing because he’s in trouble with his dad. Jessica asks Mr. Davis if only sports count, but he says other activities also count. Then she mentions all of Liz’s accomplishments (the paper, the essay, the article).
Jessica and Grace check out books (and talk about Bruce’s chances). Jessica says she’s not worried. Bruce gets too many detentions. The librarian (Mrs. Luster) comments on how great it is that Jessica’s reading more. She says she’s just trying to keep up with Liz she’s the model reader and student. She says Liz is one of her best customers. Liz is supposed to meet Mr. Bowman but she hears him having a private conversation telling someone she’s the best student he has. She more mature than the others and she’s the one he’d nominate. She sees the door open and the man leaving the room is Mr. Clark. Liz goes home and tells Jessica. Liz tells Jessica she can’t believe it. She’s always considered herself average.
She admits not so average when Jessica points out all the things she’s done. Liz says they better keep it to themselves for now. It’s not official yet. She only overheard Bowman talking to Clark. Jessica thinks they *should*, Everyone already suspects it. Liz says she might not be the one chosen. Jessica says they can just say she’s nominated. Liz says she guesses that’s ok. Again the Wakefields go out to celebrate. This time for ice-cream after dinner. On Wednesday, Liz is so excited she wakes up at 6:30 and dresses in a navy blouse and skirt and reads the Model Student handbook cover to cover. Jessica tells her she looks like a librarian but Liz has read that a model student is cheerful so she just says thank you. Steven tells her she looks like she’s going to a funeral. She just says good morning to him.
Jessica says she has to go and meet up with Lila and says she’ll split the last doughnut with Liz. Liz tho says she can have it since the model student should eat a balanced breakfast. Jessica says she’ll tell Caroline and for a minute Liz feels guilty but she tells herself it’s gonna come out in a day or two anyway. None of her friends really think much of Liz’s hair (which is in a bun) and clothes, but Pamela tells him to leave it like it is. If they don’t like it TOUGH! Kids congratulate her all day and she says it’s not certain. Until, Pamela tells her she knows it is.
Liz notices some errors before the paper is printed. Some captions get mixed up. Usually they don’t bother her, but she has a feeling the model student wouldn’t have allowed them to happen. Pamela tells her she’s proud of her for standing her ground and she should suggest everything get approved through her first. Liz announces all the final edited will have to go through her. The staff isn’t happy about this because it’ll mean more work for them but Liz’s mind is made up. Amy tells her after the minute she’s going to far and she’s hurt Nora (who was supped to be checking the paper) and Patrick.
Liz starts to think maybe she did but Pamela tells her she didn’t. The Sixers should be striving to be the best and it can be under her leadership. Liz again is grateful someone understands. At home, Liz gets on Jessica and tells her she needs some “enriching hobbies” after she finds out she skipped ballet and went shopping with the Unicorns. Liz suggest checkers, or taking up cello or the harp. Jessica quickly lets her know she’s happy with herself the way she is. Liz says it’s not enough. She has to be better. Jess says if it means enjoying life less she’s not interested.
By 7:30 the next morning, Liz has already gotten up, gone jogging with Pamela, and gone over to the Howards to take Mrs. Howard breakfast. (She has the flu and her husband is out of town). She’s also cleaned all the dishes before school so her mom won’t have to. When she gets home from hanging out at Lila’s by the pool, Liz has already set the table (it was Jessica’s turn) with the best china, folded the napkins into flowers, polished the silver candlesticks and set a bowl of red and orange zinnias in the middle of the table. Instead of feeling glad Jessica feels outdone. For dessert she’s made brown rice pudding with raisins. Steven says he doesn’t care how healthy Liz says it is he’s not touching it.
Aaron calls but Liz tells him Jessica can’t come to the phone and don’t call her at dinner time. By the time Jessica calls him back, he’s already gone on a camping trip with his dad for the weekend. Jessica wonders if he’ll ever call her again and probably decided she and Liz are losers. On Saturday, Jessica and Steven find Liz throwing out all the junk food. Steven gets *his* food out the trash and puts his foot down. He doesn’t care if it’s good for him or not. It’s *his*. Their mother tho thinks it’s thoughtful. She’s even thrown out the coffee. It’s full of caffeine and that’s not good for you. She’s replaced it with herbal tea. Mr. Wakefield says uh thanks but no thanks. Her mother tells her gently she might want to check before she throws out things other people like. She can help her plan the menus next week to make sure it’s healthy but they *will* include dessert.
Liz tries to get Jessica to go to the museum to a fossil exhibit with her and Pamela but she says forgot it (just like she did with waking up before dawn and jogging). She’d rather be mentally lazy and stay in and watch a Dolores Dufray movie. Amy comes by on Sunday. Liz invites her up and she asks Jess has she been like this all weekend. Jess tells her about everything and Amy says she invited her to the museum to but she turned it down because she doesn’t like Pamela and all her over the top flattery of Liz. She, Liz, and Jess play Scrabble. Then Pamela comes over. Liz invites her to play but she says she could never outsepll Liz she’s the best speller in the world.
Amy finally gets fed up and spells out B-A-L-O-N-E-Y and tells Pamela that’s what she’s full of and storms out. Liz starts to go after her but Pamela tells her to let her go. She probably needs some time and she’s just jealous of Liz because she isn’t the model student. And she’s also jealous of *them*. Jessica gets fed up to and tells Liz she can continue to listen to this bs all she wants but she’s gone. Pamela convinces Liz that they’re both jealous and suggest they do something to take her mind of it. So, they put together her clothes for next week. Only she’s missing a blue shirt. She remembers she gave it to Jessica. Jessica says it’s in her room somewhere and it might take her a minute. Liz tells her if she’d clean up maybe she could find things. She doesn’t see how Jessica can live in such a pigsty (which makes her mad a little). But at the same time she knows she kinda started it by going so hard to get her nominated.
Liz helps Winston at school with verbs like a good model student would, but she comes down a little too hard on him and gives him a lecture about not goofing off in class. In Social Studies, Liz gives Ellen the suggestion to read “Tom Sawyer” when she complains about, she can’t find a short book and Mrs. Arnette says that’s a good idea. Ellen doesn’t think it’s a good idea and gives Liz a dirty look. She tries to check Janet in the lunch line about having two pieces of cheesecake but Janet (LOUDLY) tells her to mind her own business. Lila, Janet, and Ellen make it known to Jessica they aren’t happy and if they have anything to do with it Liz will never be model student. Aaron even says Bruce would make a better one.
Todd also isn’t happy with Liz and tells her it wasn’t her place to try to change who Winston is. Liz tries to assist her math teacher (like it said in the book) but ends up making it sound like she’s trying to tell Ms. Wyler how to run her class. Caroline tells Jessica Mr. Clark had something in his desk with Bruce’s name on it. Jessica hopes he’s been chosen but then thinks it’s probably for something bad. Brooke tells Jessica she heads Todd might get nominated. Jessica thinks he’s a good choice and she knows how to make sure he gets the nomination, but she feels disloyal for what she’s about to do.
The first thing she does is talk to Mrs. Wyler and tells her she would have went to Todd to get her assignment because he’s such a good student. Even better than Liz because he doesn’t act like he knows it. Jessica tries to tell Liz but Liz says Todd isn’t any competition and Jessica’s is dim-witted to think he is. Then she starts bringing by (book by book) all the other dumb ideas Jessica’s had until Jessica tells her she’s acting like a jerk. Then privately she has to admit to herself that Todd really is a great candidate. After this someone calls from the Tribune and asks Liz for an interview and take a photo of her at school. At school, Liz tells Pamela about her doubts about Todd winning the contest over her. Pamela tells he not to worry about it. Then she notices all her friends are avoiding her. Pamela tells they’re just jealous. Liz congratulates Todd but he tells her you can’t believe everything you hear. Rumors can be funny like the one about Bruce’s name being on a list in Mr. Clark’s office that says he was going to be nominated when actually it was a detention slip. But what Todd says isn’t funny is how she’s been treating everyone. He says the girl he USE to like would never be that way.
Pamela drags her away to do her interview. She says she hopes she wasn’t congratulating Todd. Liz takes a good look at Pamela and wonders why she’s always interfering with her friendships. Pamela asks if she wants her to go with her but she says she wants to do it alone. The interviewer asks where her friends and sister are. He wants to interview them as well. Liz tries to get him to do it with just them but he says the editor wants her friends’ reactions. So, she has no choice but to take them over to her friends. The interviewer asks Amy how it feels to have a friend who wins prizes and awards and gets her picture in the paper.
Amy says if she’s the kind of person who gets a big head its fun. If she’s not pretty soon she wan’t have any friends except for the ones that flatter her. Julie and Sophia don’t look at her. Jessica meanwhile goes to all the teacher’s recommending Todd. They all seem to agree. Pamela gets in Jessica’s face about it when she catches her and threatens she’s going to tell Elizabeth. Liz goes to see Mr. Bowman and hears him again talking to Mr. Clark. She hears the word Wilkins and then tries to hear her name Wakefield, but then the door opens and they catch her ease dropping. She gets a week’s worth of detentions. She knows that after she leaves the office, her chances are pretty much over and then she realizes all the mistakes she’s made.
Pamela tells Liz about Jessica and she says that’s great. She’s blown her chances anyway and she thinks it would be best if they didn’t spend time together anymore. Pamela can’t believe she’s got detention and says ok. Liz thanks Jessica for nominating Todd and then apologizes to everyone she offended. She also cancels the Sixers rule she made. There are two model students announced at the assembly Todd and Elizabeth.
Rating 5: I really didn’t see the difference of how Elizabeth acted any differently from what she normally acts (with a few exceptions). At one point in the story I thought when did Elizabeth turn into my mother. It was the part where she was lecturing the Wakefields about too much sugar and carb intake. And this girl Pamela was WEEEEIRD. I thought she was the one who stole Elizabeth’s blue blouse. I’m not so sure she didn’t and slept with it under her pillow. She probably even makes out with it. I wonder who she’ll have an obsession with next, but then we probably wouldn’t hear from her again since Liz dismissed her. She should have done this a LOOOONG time ago!

Whichever ghost writer wrote this book didn’t do a very good job. Did they even know Elizabeth’s character?… she acted like a complete nazi in this book and it was so out of character. It was slightly painful to read and ended like none of the story had happened at all. I didn’t really like this one all that much.

Elizabeth is nominated for "Model Student of the Year," the award given to the best student at Sweet Valley Middle School. However, Elizabeth lets this get to her head and she starts treating people in a very snobby manner.
She then went through all the trappings of dressing up like an antiquated librarian and acting like a bossy know-it-all consequently alienating all of her friends and family.
I liked this book when I read it growing up since it's not that often that Elizabeth's cast in a bad light.
