A mystic lyricism and precise imagery often marked verse of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, whose collections profoundly influenced 20th-century German literature and include The Book of Hours (1905) and The Duino Elegies (1923).

People consider him of the greatest 20th century users of the language.

His haunting images tend to focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety — themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets.

His two most famous sequences include the Sonnets to Orpheus , and his most famous prose works include the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge .

He also wrote more than four hundred poems in French, dedicated to the canton of Valais in Switzerland, his homeland of choice.

Manche Gedichte haben mich wirklich abgeholt und manche haben mich auch stark berührt. Aber viele waren auch sehr undurchsichtig (hätte mir Erklärungen gewünscht) und manchmal war mir die Sprache zu geschwollen! Aber habe noch nie wirklich was von ihm gelesen, fand es daher mal spannend, das zu tun.

Übersichtliche Sammlung Rilkes Gedichte. Einige sehr schöne, prägnante und einprägsame, andere nur schwer zugänglich. Mir haben Kommentare gefehlt, die ein besseres Verständnis zu Tage gefördert hätten. Alles in allem aber ein schöner Einstieg.

Leseeindruck

Ich kann momentan diesem Buch keine Sterne geben. Es ist eine Gedichtsammlung (chronologisch, was einem erst am Schluss gesagt wird), die sich einer sehr schwülstigen und anhimmelnden Sprache bedient. Keine Frage die Sprache ist schön, aber es ist mir zu viel. Mich stört an dieser Ausgabe immens, das man keine wirkliche Zusatzinformation bekommt. Ich möchte bei so etwas gern wissen, was sind die Umstände in denen das Gedicht entstanden ist und wo es entstanden ist. Ich hatte oft das Gefühl der Ort des Gedichtes wechselt. Rom, Paris und Deutschland, aber ich habe wirklich keine Ahnung ob es stimmt.

Maybe Rilke's poetry is not really for me :/
A few poems were excellent, but the rest just didn't speak to me at all.

Once started it was impossible to put down. There is a sonorousness, an inevitability about Rilke's verse that makes it compelling.
