A Romantic Times Award-winning Author

In the classic tradition of the Gothic romance, Marilyn Ross has woven a spine-tingling story of innocence and evil. Set in the London of the 1880s, it moves from the elegant townhouse of the young Fosters to the opium dens of the underworld to the coffins of the living dead of the "otherworld." Through it all moves Jeremy Quentain, the handsome recluse dedicated to finding justice for friends outside the law.

I picked up this book knowing it was a gothic horror romance and expecting a fun, quick read. However, I found the story very lame. The characters were flat and very much stereotypes. The whole novel seemed more like a radio serial - overly simplified and dramatized with key points dropped on the reader instead of unfolding naturally in the story. The edition I had was published in 2004 but on closer inspection I realized the original novel was published in 1974 which helped me put the writing in context.
