As the Squad Leader of the Elite Warriors, Nikhil Kozar was the largest warrior in the Kaliszian Empire. When a shuttle crashes on one of their planets the search and rescue mission turned into something much more complicated.
Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Wharton had agreed to guide a group that had wanted an adventure on her mountain. They got more than they bargained for when they were all abducted by a group of aliens called the Ganglians. Badly beaten and barely alive Mac finds herself in the arms of the largest male she’s ever seen. She should fear him, should be fighting to get away from him, but there was something about the massive male that called to her.
A traitor threatens the Empire… Someone wants Nikhil dead…. The Zaludians want Mackenzie back… And then there was the secret she is keeping…. Would it be the one thing that finally brought down the Kaliszian Empire? Or would it be the first step in its rebirth?
2.5 stars "Do not fear, little one," Nikhil found himself pulling her close, cooing in her ear. "I vow you are safe."
As the Squad Leader of the Elite Warriors, Nikhil Kozar is a supper large intimidating warrior, his fellow warriors see him as extremely capable soldier and an over achiever who gets things done and is a pain in the ass at the training field. Due to his size, others are intimidated by him, especially females. When he finds a badly beaten and malnourished human female (Mackenzie, Mac) in one of the illegal slave mines of the hated enemy alien race, he does everything in his power to protect, heal and care for her, especially since his mate beads transfers to her, creating a mate bond...a thing unheard of since the great infection over five hundred years ago which reduced the Kaliszian female population to a few.
True Mates were the greatest gift the godess could give a Kaliszian. The bond would bind them together for life. If one died, the other would soon follow.'
This was a slightly entertaining read with the often expected insta-love/soul mate bonding found in alien romance books, except a good portion of this book was spent on ridiculous miscommunication, cultural misunderstanding and withholding of information leading to anger, unfortunate words and hurt feelings - all of which were unnecessary and irritating. All this made me doubt the hero and heroine's intelligence and depth of their love and so called magical connection. But, since magical alien beads, and ancient myth and legend are involved, anything is possible.
There were other issues to do with plot fillers such as repetition of thoughts, conversions and scenes where nothing much was happening, like visits to the hospital or other places where the hero and heroine were separated by other duties etc... But all this meant that I didn't see a believable relationship forming between this couple because they didn't spend enough time together (like the other couples in Eidem's Tornians series), things just happened here. Insta-love, insta-connection, insta-relationship and insta-sex within a short time period.
This book is an erotic alien romance (the alien is more human than alien), so it should've been hot, all the necessary ingredients were there but I can't remember anything hot here. There was a lot of passionate words, lot of explicit bedroom action and sex talk but, IMO, it wasn't hot. The words were repetitive and just... empty. Nothing translated from words into real emotions or heat. It was all a bit underwhelming.
There was also very little world building here, I expected that since erotic romance plots tend to focus on the relationship side of things. But since the romance and relationship was lacking here, all the other imperfections come into sharper focus. The humans hardly interact with the Kaliszian and vice versa because the setting was limited to a small planet far away from their homeland/planet. These issues and the previous ones slowed down the plot and made the romance less potent and the story slightly boring and one-dimensional creating many eye-roll situations.
But Luol (the warrior medic) and his true love, Maysa (the Kaliszian female he chose to love despite luck of true mate beads) stole the show. Their love, connection and commitment to each other was palpable even though they only talked once on video call.
'You are the true mate of my heart too, Luol. Nothing, not even a bead, could ever change that.'
Somehow, these words have more impact coming from Luol and Maysa than the main couple. Still I hope and pray the next couple are more like Luol, and Maysa because I'm just not ready to give up on this new series just yet.

The Hero:Nikhil Kozar - he is a Kaliszian warrior and squad leader. The Tornian Emporer was attacked after leaving a meeting with the Kaliszian Empire. They found that the Ganglians and the Zaludians had been using slave labor to reopen power crystal mines and a bunch of bodies were found at the mines. So now Nikhil and the Kaliszian forces were clearing out the mines. When he finds a severely beaten and chained female at one of the mines.
The heroine:Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Wharton - she was a human female from Earth. She lived on a mountain where she was a guide, and she was abducted by the Ganglians. Mac saw her life play out in her dreams while she was in a coma after being beaten and abused by her alien captors. She saw the death of her father when she was six, and her mother leaving her after that. She lived with her father’s dad after that on his mountain which she grew to love. She studied forestry in college and became a guide for her grandfather’s company.
The Story: When Mac first got to the mines, she and the only other female, Jen were hidden by the men and when the Zaludians found her, they found that she was female and took her away and beat her, then chained her up. Nikhil finds Mackenzie and takes her to the Kaliszian healer. He finds out immediately that she is his true mate and prays for her to live.
I have to say I wasn’t too fond about how the book started and immediately went into some complicated background information. I would rather get to know the characters a bit first before getting into the history of the kaliszian empire. Though it did show how Mac ended up getting rescued by Nikhil. The writing seemed a bit immature. For example, some things were described fully when they were obvious, so no description was necessary.
There were certain things that weren’t explained well enough and seemed a bit silly. The Kaliszian men wore beads in their braided hair and when Nikhil found out that Mac was his true mate it was because she was wearing his ashy bead (true mate bead) in her hair. So apparently the bead just magically moved from his braid to hers. Very odd indeed. Though I really did like the story and the book was plenty steamy but was still more story than steam which I like.
This audiobook was done in multiple points of view via duet narration. It was narrated by Ian Gordon, Jennifer Gil, Griffin Murphy and Jess Friedman. Ian Gordon is a bit stiff, and his voice isn’t as deep as I like for an alien Hero. I did like the fact that this was a full cast audiobook and included background sounds, like walking, fighting and more. The odd thing was that Ian Gordon did the thoughts of Nikhil but Griffen Murphy did the voice of Nikhil, and his voice was nice and deep. Similar for Mac, Ian did the thought narrations while Jennifer did the voice. Overall, I was very happy with the narration, and it made me put a bunch of other M.K. Eidem audiobooks on my wishlist.
I love M.K. Eidem books! I expected Treyvon's book to come out first, but after reading a blurb on the author's website that she needed to tell Nikhil's story first before Treyvon made sense. Her website mentioned she told Grim's story (first book I've read of hers and absolutely LOVE!) when she should've told Wray's story first.
I really like Nikhil's story and am anxious to read about Treyvon. I am curious if she will write about the '3 powerful species in the known universe' and how that all ties in with humans.
I am still conflicted how I feel about this one. I picked this up despite of ugly-ugly cover because I read one of my friends review for its sister-series. This has Ice Planet Barbarian feel to it but more militia and political drama thrown into it.
What got on my nerves -
spelling mistakes (there are few not much) POV change (from first to third?? in the middle chapter - that had definitely tested my resolve to finish this) Repetition (Oh my God! so many repeated conversations - I won't lie, I skipped it) Nikhil's my 'little one' crap (no, he is not calling any kid but his true mate - do I need to say more?)
But True Mate stuff was interesting enough with beads and all alien 'History'. This series has potential but there are so many things you have to ignore in order to enjoy the story, sometimes mistakes out weight the good stuff. Anyways I finished this and still wants to read Jen's story so let's see...
***Warning! Possible spoilers and some definite raging below!!***
I’ve been waiting for Ms Eidem to come out with a new book for what seems like forever! Not really, but I preordered this bad boy up immediately when I saw she decided to write this one before Treyvon. I love her stories and world building. She never disappoints with her perfect heroes. This was no different.
Ms Eidem introduces us to a sister race of the Tornians, the Kaliszians, that we catch a first glimpse of in Wray and Grim two of my all time favorite books. The Kaliszians have a “True Mate” that is determined by the transfer of the "True Mate" bead. A true mate can also become their Ashe which I equated to as a wife. But the Ashe doesn't have to be their "True Mate". Mackenzie is found in the Zaludian mines, beaten and severely malnourished and dehydrated. She is discovered to be Nikhil’s true mate when she is rescued. I did find I had some confusion on the whole True Mate/Ashe thing and whether they could have healthy children vs unhealthy children with someone who was just an Ashe as opposed to a True Mate.
Nikhil was wonderful, so kind and sweet.
"You complete me in a way I cannot adequately express. I am no longer alone, there is now more to my life than just duty and battle. There is you.”
I wanted to just eat him up. He was the perfect hero. He only wanted to take care of Mackenzie. He treated her with honor and respect and I felt he truly loved her. And, only wanted to please her. He was absolutely perfect in my eyes.
What my entire problem with this book was the heroine, Mackenzie. OMG! I wanted to choke the ever-loving shit out of her. She had me raging on more than one occasion that not even a bottle of wine could make me like her. She jumped to conclusions at every turn and then would say hurtful things and not explain why she was upset. Oh, don’t get me wrong, she had moments where I thought “Okay, she’s going to come through for me.” But then, she would go and do some dumb shit and I had the hate going on again.
In the end, I guess you could say she proved her love for Nikhil but to me it was too little too late. Up until the last few pages, she was still keeping secrets from him that she claimed "weren't her secrets to tell" but I call bullshit. She wanted him to be honest with her in everything. She should have trusted her mate. It drives me absolutely crazy to have a perfect hero paired with a bitchy heroine, one who doesn't appreciate him. I totally understand feeling you have your choices taken away and not wanting a "bead" to determine your fate. But come on! Get over that shit already!!
Anyway, raging done...overall, I enjoyed the story and look forward to Treyvon though, but because Ms. Eidem has handled this well in the past, I will still read it.
I really liked this one and can't wait to read book two. I love a good alien/human romance and so this book was just what I was looking for. I will say at times I just wanted the heroine to go more with the flow, yes it's a huge difference between you, but if you are with an alien and you both didn't even know the other race existed you need to know you both will have different normals. It bugs me when in that situation the people/alien expect the other to do everything like they would.
After saying that it wasn't horrible or anything that took me out of the story but it was something that bugs me. I loved both her hero and heroine. I have to like a heroine in the book because to some extend they are me when I read a book(I place myself in the book) but I have to love the hero and I did in fact loved him. He was protective, possessive and so caring and kind to the heroine. She was his everything, and how can you not love that. This book is very safe, no OW/OM at all in this book. This is the first book I have read from his author and I really got into this book and her writing. We get a nice glimpse into who book two is about and I have to tell you I am excited!
3.5 stars It was good but not as good as the Tornians series. I thought the heroine was too immature at times. But then I would remember she had known him like a day or two and I would try to give her some slack. I liked Nikhil though.
The first book in M.K. Eidem's series, Kaliszians. Nikhil Kozar, squad leader of the Kaliszian Elite Guard, is checking out the caves on Pontus when he finds the beaten and half dead body of a female. But she is not of his species or any he knows. She is in fact a human from Earth and was captured and sold as a slave to work the mines. Mackenzie "Mac" Wharton feels she failed her group as a guide when they were captured by the Ganglians. After being beaten she awakes to find herself in the arms of a huge warrior.
This is related to another series by M.K. Eidem, Torians. I don't think you have to read the other series but you will want to because there is mention of events that happen in the series. So, I, like many, was expecting Treyvon's story first but apparently the author felt led to tell Nikhil's story instead. This was fine with me as I enjoyed his story and I loved the characters. But now I have a dilemma. I once again have to wait for the next book to come out.
This book had no story. It went nowhere at all. Writing style worse than previous books from this author. The characters in this book exclaim everything ! With multiple exclamation points!!!!!! Even though what they are saying is not worth exclaiming! I may reconsider my two stars and one star it...
I love this writer and was a huge fan of Grim and Wray.......... this book was good, but not I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as the others. The plot was fast paced and I really adored the hero. My only complaint, AND SLIGHT SPOILER............. the hero was so endearing and innocent in the first half of this book. I absolutely fell in love with his character. He spoke of how he had never kissed a woman aside from his mom and sister. He spoke of how women were scared of him and avoided him because he was so large, not handsome, and intimidating. He had my pity and I really liked that he was going to have all these first experiences with the heroine. BUT........... just because Nikil had never kissed a woman didn’t mean he didn’t have sex with them. I really could have gone without this detail. It seemed to go against everything mentioned in the first half about who he truly was. If almost all women were terrified of him, and he was so innocent and inexperienced, how is that he was sexually experienced? They call it "friendships" in their customs but come on. This aspect really disappointed me.
I still did like this book a lot, and the hero was completely devoted to our virgin heroine. I would easily recommend this book and will likely read just about anything this author publishes.
I like this spin off series. The hero is sweet and the heroine is resourceful. The culture clashes are a bit overwrought but it is fun way to spend an afternoon.
A nice SF romance. I enjoyed it! Interesting custom of beads that shows where one is coming from, what did one achieve in life and wheather one is married or not! Looking forward to reading the next one!
Wow, that cover... so cheesy! If you can get past the cover, there's a decent alien/human romance to be had. The heroine was annoying at times, but the hero made up for her shortcomings.
3.5 RATING- Guilty pleasure Sci-Fi! Overall I enjoyed and plan to read the next in the series. This series is a spin off of another series by the author. I have read book one in that series and think it helped a bit grasping some elements with this one. Some events were alluded to that I obviously missed but nothing that hindered my enjoyment
A group of humans are captured and months later rescued by Nikhil and his men, his true mate bead recognizes the h as his mate and they eventually fall in love
First off, I'm a big M.K. Eidem fan so I was really happy to get a new series set in the same world/universe as Wray.
I found Mackenzie to be a little annoying and Nikhil to be a bit of a push-over. I guess this is to be expected since True Mates are impossibly rare. I loved the "beads" and found this concept really original.
The traitor/bad guy issue is not dealt with and the ending is a bit abrupt.
This book is too cute. M.K. Eidem can be hit or miss for me but this one was a hit. It wasn't as good as grim though, I feel like I keep waiting for something to equal that to me and it's not coming but this was closer. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the beads. Also, the ending that really rest to me. I'm really excited for the next book and also for Gryfs, I felt like that little teaser with whoever Mica is was too much to let go... I'm gonna need that book.
First, let me say that I absolutely love this story. I believe that Nikhil will come to rival Grim as a much re read story. Nikhil is a very large Kaliszian warrior and Mackenzie is a small human. Their story can be read alone but you should really have the background of Grim and Wray to understand everything. The clash of cultures could ruin everything. The Kaliszians wear Suja beads in their hair that tell their accomplishments and heritage but super important are the True Mate Suja and the Ashe/Dasho beads. The True Mate Suja can not be given, it travels on it's own to attach to the mate's hair. Mac is the first True Mate in 500 years. We get a villain who thinks that he deserves a mate and more prestige than Nikhil, we revisit the Goddess and Her mate through Mac's dream and then there's our old friend Supreme Commander Treyvon Rayner. Lots of sexy times and HEA of course.
I've read a few books by Ms Eiden. And while they weren't particularly good, they were at least ok. So I thought to try this one. But the sample of Nikhil seems so badly written that it seems a different author. Still, I was bored, but I wasn't willing to try some new author. And so after a few weeks I went and bought this book. What can I say but shame on me?
The rest of the book was even worse than the sample. It's really bad, badly written and badly thought/planned. I don't know if she needed desperately to publish or what, it's not up to par with her other books. Like I said, it seems a different hand. Not much of a plot, no real romance. Let's not talk about world building or characters. Add that the sex scenes were cringe worthy, and that a woman should bloodyhell know where an hymen is and not it's not placed at the end... well, you can see where my 1 star comes from...don't you?
Enjoyed the story as a whole. Definitely insta-love. The irritating part for me was Nikhil's constant jumping to conclusions without letting Mac explain. The Kaliszians aren't stupid, so all of them should know there's going to be differences in culture and expectations.
