Sofia Martinez: Lights Out - 2016
Sofia and her family wake up to find that the have lost power in their house. Sofia's Mom is worried that all the food will spoil and go to waste. Sofia suggests they eat the ice cream for breakfast and when her sisters say that their parents would never allow that, Sofia says that it's better than letting it go to waste and her parents agree. Then Sofia and her father go to the store to get more flashlights for the family. The store is all sold out but Sofia sees the left over Halloween Display and gets an idea. Her father helps her get the supplies they need and they head home. Along the way the check on family and friends and invite them to their house for a surprise. When everyone is gathered at the Martinez family home the find out their are having a cook out in the dark. Sofia starts pulling out all the things she bought and gathered to light up the house and have a dance party.

I choose this book because it shows how families look out for each other and how they can make the best of a bad situation. Sofia is a very clever little girl with lots of big ideas and I think that a lot of kids can relate to her. It is also a great book series for transitioning from picture books to chapter books.

Large font, about 21 pages of story. Color pictures. Spanish words are interspersed in pink/red so they stand out. The back has a Spanish glossary and 3 discussion questions and 3 writing prompts. A fun story about getting creative in a storm when the power goes out and using Halloween decorations and glow in the dark toys and decorations. Hispanic characters. Own voices author.

I love the Sofia Martinez series, they are great beginner chapter books for all of my students and I love that all of the books offer a bit of Spanish in each of the English versions as well! All of my students think that is SO COOL! I have these books in both Spanish and English in my school library. I’m always looking for books with diverse characters to represent all students and their families so authors like Jacqueline are always at the top of my list ❤️ when they capture my students hearts with their great writing too!

Sofia and her family are forced to come up with other plans when a storm knocks out the power. But as always, Sofia is prepared with some ways for her family to enjoy the evening, power or no power. Sofia is a delightful character that young readers are bound to enjoy, with her boundless enthusiasm and great ideas. The full color illustrations along with the Spanish words and glossary also make this book a great addition to diverse collections for young readers.
