A spring break mountain-climbing trip could be a chance for Kendal to connect with her distant father. A little adventure and time together seem like a good idea, but there's one the mountain might be cursed. Soon a father-daughter getaway turns dangerous, and they might not make it to the summit. That's the thing about bonding―you have to be alive to do it.
Imagine being lost on a cold snowy mountain never leaving, just lost, cold, hungry and scared. In the book The Atlas Of Cursed Places Dead Man Anchor. The author is K.R. Coleman. The story is about a girl named Kendal And her father August going on a hiking trip to a lodge to climb a mountain in the Pacific Northwest. The protagonist is a girl named Kendal and the antagonist is her dad named August because her father is strict and cold and works for the Marines. They started climbing and there was a big and terrible snow storm and it was hard to see because of all the snow coming down like a rushing waterfall. When they were walking her dad and his friend Jerramy fell off the mountain. She found her dad with a broken leg and his friend had a big fat gash on his forehead that was bleeding badly and he was losing lots of blood so he passed out in the cold snow unconscious. Kendal helped fix their injuries with a first aid kit and tried to find shelter. She saw an empty cave and brought them inside and lit a fire to keep warm near the nice warm fire. The next day she decided to find a way for help so she walked and used a rope and wrote SOS and waited for a bit until a S.W.A.T helicopter came to save them and brought them to the hospital to safety. (disclaimer this is scary book for tenagers up to 12-13) I would recommend this book to people who love horror books and eerie stories.
For teachers--has a lot of elements that fit into the theme of romanticism, especially dark romanticism. I am having a student write a series of poems a la Edgar Allen Poe based on the imagery and events within this book. To me, it suffers greatly from pacing problems. However, the student enjoys it and is happy to have an age-appropriate book that suits her reading level. I have a bone to pick with the author for naming a character Nellie Bly and then having it...not be The Nellie Bly. Anyway.
I have reluctant readers who will really enjoy this. Fast paced action, a strong plot and a bit mysterious. This bested my expectations for a reluctant reader series.
I think it was a good book, because Kendal, Jeremy, and her father had to go through a lot of things while on the Mountain, and thankfully Kendal saved both of them and herself.
Kendal is the character I choose. She is a reader, girl. She is also funny, interesting, curios, clever,a distraction. She’s about to climb Mountain hood with her father and one of his close friends. She’s going on this trip because her and her father are really distant now. Once they get there she rounds out that the mountain is actually a volcano and that it’s curse. She now is on a search for information to find what’s going on and to see if it’s true.
I do have to say this was good, I really enjoyed the story and it kept me going. Kendal and her dad did an awesome job with the climbing and Kendal used all of what she learned to save her dad and Jeremy (their guide up the mountain). I look forward to reading the others in the series.
