The Playground

Rate this book
As a teacher, I'm used to being on the playground. But I never thought I'd be the one swinging.

I'm also a wife and mother, struggling to maintain status quo. My sons just left for college and I suddenly realize how far apart my husband and I have grown... I feel like a damn cliché. Then the teacher down the hall with questionable morals introduces me to her friends. They’re all swingers.

What the WHAT?!

It’s all fun and games until your sex swing breaks. Haha, no really, so far it seems like all fun and games. It could be the answer to what’s missing in my life...or maybe I’m just not asking the right questions?

Journey's grand adventure

I discovered after reading this book that it was the author's first published work.* I got the feeling while reading that it might be semi-autobiographical in nature as there's a "truth" which surfaces here and there in the telling.

Journey is in a sexless marriage and a group of co-workers talk her into checking out a local swingers' community. With some trepidation, and her husband's consent, she attends a party and she soon finds herself exploring "the lifestyle".

Journey is a likeable narrator. Her trials and triumphs feel real, and I found her archaic "prudish" language to be hilarious when it occasionally surfaced. What could be seen as a controversial/sleazy episode in Journey's life is told with warmth and joy as she "discovers herself" and ultimately strengthens her relationship with her husband.

Four "wildly spasming" stars. Recommended!

*I have since learned this is incorrect

Well written book! The author to a taboo subject and spun it into a beautiful story of loss and love. Sprinkled with humor and tons of heat, I sat down and couldn't stop reading!

I'll be honest when I say that i really didn't think this would be my cup of tea. I have never read anything quite like this so I was worried that with the subject matter I wouldn't be able to connect with the characters. I was sorely mistaken in that aspect.

Journey was a women that was in a rut with life. I feel that there are a lot of middle aged women who would be able to connect on a deeper level with her and everything that she is going through. I might even one day.

He was just a little boring most of the book but I did like him. He had such faith and love and trust for his wife that you can't help but love him.

So I'm not going to give much of the plot away. What you read in the description is what you get with the book. It's different and very enjoyable, there were times I giggled because of the interaction between husband and wife.

Overall, I'm surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. This is my first book by this author and I really don't think it be my last. She was able to take a subject matter and spin it into the beautiful story they kept me captivated. I do have to say that I wanted to see more of Rob in the lifestyle scene more or even being in his head. It was really hard to connect with him because it is all from Journeys POV. book.4 stars #2OCCJD

Journey West (yes, that's her actual name!) is a very vanilla school teacher with a husband who can't seem to "complete" his marital obligations. Add in a job transfer, and an empty nest and needless to say, Ms West is less than thrilled with her life of late.
Enter some new work friends who introduce Journey to a world of sexual freedom and pleasure - in no time, Journey has become enmeshed in a life that she knew nothing about only months before, which provides good distractions from the less-than-stellar state of her marriage.
Through a course of dramatic and semi-tragic events, Journey finds herself in a quandary: save her marriage, or continue enjoying her newfound sexual awakening? Or just maybe...she can have it all?
Journey is a like-able and relatable protagonist, and thanks to the author's personable style of writing, I felt the gamut of emotions that she felt in dealing with her husband and the new swinging lifestyle. Author Phoebe Alexander introduces her readers to real, timely subject matter in a very relatable way, and provides plenty of heat in her characters' steamy moments thanks to excellent use of imagery. Highly recommend!

Journey is so easy to fall in love with as a character. Small town teacher married to a doctor, just became an empty nester and nothing seems right anymore. Her husband, her first and only lover is no longer interested in sex her house is empty and to top it off she has to move to a new school where she teaches 3rd grade. Her life needs some life and she finds it with some of the teachers at her new school. With her husbands permission, she discovers the swingers life. He is not interested in joining her in the lifestyle, but seems glad to perform less of that function in her life.

This book ranges from all out laughter to sad occasions and heart ache to some great hot scenes. All of which are treated with an equally deft hand. Phoebe Alexander is a phenomenal writer who will keep you turning pages but have your fan nearby because she writes it hot.

I adored this book. Journey decided to try a new lifestyle and during the process she discovered more about herself as well as her husband. She discovered their problems actually stemmed from his problem and despite how hard it got they found a way back to each other. This story could easily be any married couple in any town. That's what made reading it enjoyable. There are definitely so e super hot scenes but it's the story that will draw you in. It's a great book to read. I highly recommend it.

This book took me on a Journey (pun intended). The Playground had the right amount of sexy, thrill, and funny in it. Pheoebe Alexander did an excellent job on capturing how real world stresses can strain a marriage but all it takes is something simple, even erotic, to bring them back together. Huge thumbs up.

All the feels. The characters are so dynamic & the storyline is perfect. You feel the emotions of pain & joy with the characters. The story moves along nicely with just enough intensity as to not overwhelm but also keep you invested.

The Playground was about a married couple who grew apart after sending their boys off to college. Rob and Journey struggled to reconnect physically. Rob was a doctor and Journey was a teacher.
Rob had his golf days with the guys and poker nights. However, Journey struggled to find friends who she connected with. After changing schools Journey found friendship with three unlikely ladies at the new school.

I love that Phoebe chose to use the female character as the one seeking sex and being unsatisfied by her husbands inability to fulfill her needs. I also liked how Phoebe chose the male character to have a fault with his sex drive when it's usually the woman. I found the role reversal appealing.

I loved the step by step process of introducing Journey to the world of technology. Journey used online dating to venture out into the world. I loved the "bring the 40 year old woman", up to current trends, it was informative.
I felt connected with Journey and her struggles of insecurity in her marriage. I agree that marriage goes through stages and some stages are harder to adjust to than others. The methods Journey used to gain attention and try to reconnect with her husband were proper methods.
The story was written in Journey's perspective. While I would have loved alternating POV's it certainly kept me guessing the entire time about Rob's feelings. Leaving out Rob's perspective left me to speculate many scenarios allowing me to create more dramatic circumstances.
Journey had self-esteem issues, insecurity issues, and issues of not feeling popular or accepted by other females. Journey had put her needs aside during the duration of her marriage and it was time to stand up and voice her needs to Rob.
Rob made one grave mistake in his marriage with Journey, he failed her by creating doubts to slip into her mind that she was not desirable enough for him. This created the chain of events that led Journey to explore other possibilities.
This story touched upon a variety of topics: Social media, the lifestyles of professionals, and the age differences between men and women.
Journey found a new lifestyle that added a new dimension to her relationship with her husband and friends. This lifestyle demanded that a couple be respectful of each other, maintain open lines of communication, and elevate each other's needs before their own. While both characters made drastic lifestyle choices what they learned was to find common ground and acceptance to grow together rather than apart.

Phoebe wrote a convincing and compelling story that was honest and realistic with the lifestyle changes that occur in marriages during this stage in life. Phoebe illustrated the difficulties associated with finding friendship and support in a community that too easily judged from the outside while not understanding the circumstances that led to their choices. Phoebe showed how couples could forgive and give second chances while they explore other possibilities at finding happiness. Phoebe wrote as if this was her own personal journey and shared the experience as if she had first hand knowledge on the outcome.
Don't let the cover fool you this was not an erotica story but a story about experiencing a new lifestyle with no guilt by finding acceptance in a community of professional individuals looking to explore their sexuality. Yes the story contained sex but it was done in a fashion to illustrate how a woman and mans' needs change during different stages in life.

First I have to say it took me quite long to get through the book. And that was because after the first quarter I started to extremely dislike the main character, a spoilt woman in the middle of her midlife crisis constantly complaining about everyone around her because she selfishly expects all of them to give her whatever she wants whenever she wants it not matter what they feel, think or go through. She doesn't play by the rules but gets all excited when others don't either. She is mean and sometimes downright cruel to her husband who yes, has flaws and makes huge mistakes - but she is no better but behaves as if she is and as if it is her right to treat him like that and do whatever she wants to. I don't think it's justified. I don't think she's swinging, in my opinion she's cheating. That doesn't mean I think badly of the lifestyle, I get it and if both are okay with it AND play by the rules (open, true to each other, talking about it and keeping to the rules set) it's totally acceptable. But if you are not ready to share but expect others to be okay with your sampling whatever comes along... well. Not okay in my book. So I was ranting quite a lot throughout reading the book and hoping she might get it and redeem herself. And I was contemplating giving only three stars because of that. BUT the story is told from her point of view. And she may be self-centered and egotistical but she is stringently so and gives us a look into her life that may not be likeable (to me, I am sure lots of women will love it!) but is brilliantly written. The other characters are very real to me too, I get her husband by the way much more than I get her, her friends are interesting, the man she meets - oh boy (but do they really have to be so well endorsed - every single one of them?), apart from Chris (who comes over slightly psycho, I wouldn't want to meet him). All written very convincingly, their behaviour following an understandable pattern, the story believable throughout the book, it could really happen to everyone.

And you can take one very important advise from the book (which always is a bonus for me): If you are not satisfied in your marriage TALK TO YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER. There are always ways to find together again but it is important to talk about because very often men just don't get it if you just silently suffer. How should they know? Tell them and you can prevent all the drama Journey has to live through. Plus you won't hurt someone you love. Talking, listening, finding a solution together. That's how it should be. And this book may help tremendously. I am very happy to have read it all through the end and I can recommend it despite my issues with Miss Journey.

Journey is alone in her marriage. Her boys are off at college, forging their life, Rob, her husband he's at work. And then there is Journey, still craving the desire and love from her husband, who is like her roommate. She has needs he is not able to meet and she is tired of being rejected. A girl can only take so much before she dies of loneliness. Enter the teachers and their swinger lifestyle. This is exactly what Journey needs in her life. A little side action, without the main course of commitment. And so begins Journey's foray into the swinging lifestyle.

Her first partner, John is everything she needs. Gentle, yet stimulating. Only she is falling over an edge with him. She doesn't want to share him. The life she built is falling down around her when she finds her husband has secrets too. Friendship and relationships are tested to the max. Journey needs to figure out what she wants in life. Does she want to be married to Rob? Or does she want to swing? Or can she have her cake and eat it too?

The story is good, you get to know Journey and the lifestyle, her relationship with Rob and her mom. There were parts that I skimmed.

I felt empowered by Journey and the fact that she went after what she needed. Her husband wasn't giving it to her - literally, so she grabbed the bull by the horns. I'm proud of her. Proud of her transformation and her ability to adapt and change her situation and the environment around her.

Book Review: The Playground
Author: Phoebe Alexander
FIVE STARS
This is the first book that was written by Phoebe Alexander. It is not my first book that I have read by this author though. With that being said let me just say that I can tell how much Ms. Alexander has adapted and changed her writing over the years and through all of her other stories. This book is not as in depth with the sexual encounters as I have found to be the case in many of her other riviting books.
Ms. Alexander is a master at story telling. Her character development and plot lines are solid and she will really draw you into the story. In this book we meet Journey and we learn that she is a school teacher who is experiencing empty nest syndrome and is feeling unfulfilled in her marriage. Finding out that her husband has some issues of her own comes as quite the shock.
This book is all about self discovery and learning to overcome your own problems as well as adapting and growing in a relationship.
Wonderful story and I can't wait for more from Ms. Alexander.
This book is a stand alone and it is recommended for mature audiences only.

First of all, this book was given to me to read it and to give my review of it . I must admit that I did not know what to expect given the subject matter . I started to read it and at start i was a little bit shocked when I saw what exactly will be action . But as I read it and read it , I was more impressed that the main action and subplots . So fancifully embroidered book , so beautiful end of book, definitely recommend it to be read . You see different ways of love , what is to us something that is not common to some is below normal . It does not mean if it is something different that 's not good . I'm not that kind of person to swing and all , but that does not mean I do not appreciate this way of thinking and that this way of life is not interesting . I thank the author I had a chance to read this , and it is in such a beautiful way she wrote this book , and finished this book just the right way .
p.s. sorry for my grammar i am from croatia

A steamy and entertaining story of a women’s journey in turning the page into a new chapter on her life. Journey (yep cute name) is a newly empty nester with a husband that she is just not connecting with. Sometimes you find help in unusual places. In walks Journey’s fellow teachers at her new school who open her eyes to new lifestyle. The story was unique and clever. Journey is instantly relatable. Story had just the right amount of angst, steam, laughter and emotion that I was hooked from page 1.

Journey is an amazing character. I found I could identify with her insecurities, desires and sense of humour. Phoebe does an amazing job of character development, even with the sheer number of characters in this book, each one is multi-dimensional and engaging. I laughed, had my heart strings tugged, got angry and enjoy every sensual detail. Can't wait to see what comes next from this author!

I loved loved loved journey. She is a school teacher married and joins the swinger life. That's all I am saying. This book was about discovery. We can all connect to journey and how she is feeling. What a wonderful book. Had me so drawn in. I really connected with journey because I felt at times the author was describing how i sometimes feel. 5+ stars. Oh and HOT HOT HOT.

This book was hot! Definitely made your girlie bits tingle! The Playground was a book that introduced the lifestyle of swinging. I never have read one before and not much into the erotica but this was a good read. I really enjoyed the story behind all the swinging and the ups and downs of a marriage.

My reading mojo is back!!!

I so needed this book! In the process of waiting for some book series and duets to be completed, I decided to do some standalone reading to occupy my time. Well.....the last books I have read just didn't do it for me and I thought my reading mojo was going to be on a long hiatus. But then I saw this book.....and it's back with a vengeance!
This is my first book by Phoebe Alexander and I almost didn't read it because the cover looked....I don't know, cheesy maybe? But you know how the saying goes, "Never choose a book by its cover", or I'll add to never pass a book up because of its cover. I absolutely loved this book because it was so REAL! And it made sense! You know know how some erotica romance reads like a play by play scene of a porn movie? No theme, no real dialogue just bam, bam, yes, yes, BOOM! Well, those books bore me to death! There was an actual storyline here and I could definitely relate. So much of Journey's story was so relatable that I started thinking about some of my past relationships.
You will not be disappointed with this story. It gives a very vivid, realistic picture of the swinging lifestyle, a non-judgemental one at that! Don't be surprised if your interests aren't peaked either! 😉 Excellent read!

Laughable nonsense...

Is it just me or if the roles were reversed this book and chubby husband was cavorting with sexy younger women it would be labeled as misogynistic? Of course it would. So many hypocrisies in this, Shaming a woman because she can rock a pair of heels in an airport. When the cuck is in the hospital she states to him "Part of our vows is in sickness and in health". Somehow forgot about the forsaking of all others. And in an argument she screams to him "It's all about what you want" Really?
Boil this down and you have an amoral, selfish, self centered slut. And worse a no self respecting cuck.
Yeah that's an ideal marriage....

This book gave me all the feels!!!

This was a very beautifully written story and had my emotions all over the place. Lessons were learned and love was all around. Journey and Rob's story was very relatable and I found myself routing for them. I also enjoyed all the other couples, hope to read about them in the future. A couple things I will take away from this book. 1. Keep an opened mind and 2. Communication is key in all relationships. This is definitely a must read, get your copy today.

Beautiful. Heartfelt, erotic and loving

Such a joy to read. Full of emotion, interesting characters, humour and deliciously hot erotic scenes. I quickly came to care for Journey, admiring her search for her personal truth and her honesty. Every character is special, contributing to the overall story. Every encounter and scene build the tension, emotional growth and overall enjoyment. The, at times, laugh out loud humour mixed well with the more intimate/emotive scenes. A highly recommended read that I am sure will stay in my thoughts. A book I plan to read again.

I think I've found a new obsession! This book was only the beginning of what I've read from this author, but I know it won't be the last. This book is sexy, taboo, and has juuuust enough of all the naughty stuff to make it hard to put down. I think it's relatable and the characters are honest. If this is what Ms. Alexander has in store with her other books, I'm game. This is a playground I would be happy to spend recess at!

This was a great read for people who have been married a long time and are facing the new challenges of an empty nest. I enjoyed seeing issues I'd had experience with put on paper and seeing how Journey dealt with them. I was concerned for a great bit of the book that she wasn't communicating and/or including her husband. But all was resolved in the end.

I loved this book. It's a real rites of passage novel, the empty nest syndrome is a great theme. Journey's journey into a new life style, beginning a new chapter in her life and trying to live life to the fullest while holding her previous life together. It's a fun, thought provoking read.
