From the makers of SHADOW SQUADRON comes another elite crew of heroes, but these heroes fight a very different the war against wildfires. With the climate changing and the population growing, wildfires have increased in number, size, and severity. Only an elite group of men and women are equipped to take on these immense Firestormers! Like the toughest military units, they have the courage, the heart, and the technology to stand on the front lines against hundred-foot walls of 2,000-degree flames. With hyper-realistic illustrations and action-packed story lines, these fiery chapter books are sure to make any reader sweat.
In the sacred brotherhood of America’s Bravest, there is an elite few who dare to combat the most challenging and dangerous of conflagrations. Meet the Smokejumpers; firefighting’s quintessential Navy Seals who jump into the most inaccessible environments on the planet to contain malevolent wildfires that threaten lives and property. Situated in California, Arizona, Idaho and Montana, these tough as nails firefighters are a breed apart.
Now, young readers Author Carl Bowen, the creative literary master behind the popular “Shadow Squadron” book series dives into the reclusive world of the wildland firefighter in his action adventure novel “FireStormers: Elite Firefighting Crew.” Here, we’re introduce to a courageous and rugged cast of characters. Among them Lt. Jason Garrett who’s just been tapped to lead a crew of Smokejumpers known as the “FireStormers” at the insistence of his politically-driven father, a U.S. Senator for the state of California who wants his son to do better and ride with the best. Jason is thrown literally into the line of fire on his first mission as team leader with a boisterous, competitive and close-knit group of Smokejumpers. The FireStormers consist of a twenty-person crew who are tasked with cutting line and setting back fires to halt the aggressive onslaught of an advancing wildfire. The elite firefighters in the field are led by two gregarious squad bosses: a gruff, arrogant, stubborn, and fiercely-devoted veteran Sergeant Heath Rodgers and a tomboyish, gutsy little sister, Sergeant Amalia Rendon whose eagerness to get the job done while running circles around her male counterparts makes for an interesting and unique dynamic to this wildland firefighting family.
Interestingly enough, it isn’t just Sgt. Rendon who’s strutting her stuff on the fire line. The point man on the scene responsible for coordinating all aspects of a major incident, is none other than America’s first female smokejumper Chief MacElreath. A workaholic with virtually no time on her hands for the routine pleasantries of home as a house wife or working mother; Chief MacElreath’s life is solely devoted to her sworn duties as wildland fire chief every time the bell rings. Head of the National Forest Service’s Interagency Strike Force a.k.a. the FireStormers, Chief MacElreath and company will need all of their years of experience, equipment, technology and bravery to match wits with what is proving to be a very formidable fire season.
All of the team’s expertise is put to the ultimate test when a massive wildfire threatens the Klamath National Forest. With thousands of acres ablaze, it’s up to the newly-formed FireStormers to turn the tide with skill, courage, and 21st Century technology not found on any fire engine. Unfortunately, it isn’t just the voracity of a menacing inferno the crew has to contend with. As the blaze intensifies, the firefighters will have to confront multiple perils from: a radical animal rights activist, a community of survivalists in harm’s way and a lost Hot Shot Crew with Sergeant Rodgers’ little brother Ethan somewhere in the maelstrom. It’s up to the courage and skill of ordinary people who will have to do extraordinary deeds in order to ensure that everyone goes home.
This was a very entertaining and easy to read novel! Despite some grammatical errors in the beginning, Carl Bowen does an exemplary job putting the reader into the center of the action with a diverse and realistic cast of characters. Jason Garrett is great as the rookie team leader and female heroines Sgt. Amalia Rendon and Chief MacElreath are very strong and likable characters. I especially liked the relationship between Sgt. Rodgers and his little brother Ethan; it reminded me of Donnie Wahlberg and Will Estes on “Blue Bloods.” While a work of fiction, Carl Bowen’s depiction of a wildland firefighting unit is dead-on accurate with the real-life Smokejumpers and Air Attack Crews who are engaged in battle right now in California for what is shaping up to be a very hot fire season. As someone who has a lot of respect for the firefighting community, my hat’s off to Mr. Bowen for his literary homage to the wildland firefighter. “FireStormers: Elite Firefighting Crew” would definitely make for a great movie! A must-read for anyone young or old interested in wildland firefighting!
I received this book as an arc from Bookcon 2016. I thought this was a children's chapter book judging from the cover however it is not. I mean a kid could read it especially if they really like wildfire fighters or like war combat books. It was not what I expected but tbh I didn't know what to expect.
